Discover the inspiring story of Amelia Earhart - the first woman to fly solo over the Atlantic Ocean - in this fascinating kids' biography.

Amelia Earhart is one of the world's most famous aviators in the history of flight and a role model for women everywhere. Follow the story of this trailblazing pilot - from her childhood adventures in Kansas, USA, to her around-the-world-flight in 1937, which ended in her mysterious disappearance over the Pacific Ocean.

This biography book for kids ages 8-11 charts the major events of Amelia's life, including buying her first plane (a bright yellow bi-plane that she named "The Canary"), gaining her pilot's license in 1923, becoming the first female air passenger to cross the Atlantic Ocean in 1928, and becoming the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic in 1932, earning her the nickname "Queen of the Air".

Amelia went on to become a global celebrity. She wrote best-selling books based on her flying adventures, broke many other aviation records, championed equal rights between men and women, and helped found the Ninety-Nines, an organization for female aviators. The story of a true feminist icon, DK Life Stories: Amelia Earhart is the gripping tale of a determined woman who broke the rules and followed her dreams skywards.

This is a biography for older children who want to move on from the story like Little People, Big Dreams style picture books and add a little more weight to the education value.
But it doesn’t dismiss the fun and colour of such books through its colour process- here with bright apple green, peach and lemon yellow accents lifts this from a schoolish book and adds a little fun.
I especially love the books contents page organised like a flight path/timeline with chapter headings.
The writing is accessible from 8+ through its thoughtful vocabulary choice and construction with a nod to narrative detail to flesh out the facts with life. but certainly speaking as a former history teacher this book’s approach and depth has value into secondary school from the content and wider context provided such as placing Amelia’s story within and defining wider historic events, definitions and accessible explanations of technical content.
Certainly a series I would look out for more and invest in.

These lovely biographies from DK Life Stories Series is just my kind of recreational reading. I'm currently on a quest to read as many biographies of exceptional women from this book series. Once again, another inspiring lady who advocated for the rights of women. Despite the tragic ending of Amelia Earhart, we can't dismiss the feats she achieved as a brave aviatrix who proved to the world along with other aviatrixes that women are capable of tackling bold adventures and setting world records.

A great little biography for upper elementary readers. This book has photos of Jane in the field and it does a great job at defining content specific vocabulary through definitions at the bottom of the page or context clues within the sentence.

I read this with my daughter for her wax museum report. We really enjoyed learning more about Jane Goodall and her work with chimps. It was a little more in-depth than what we needed but interesting.
