The Heart of Christmas · Anita Stansfield

All of Society knows Lord Hawthorne is not interested in marriage, yet he cannot deny Miss Davenport’s unique charm. And as the Christmas season works its magic, their charade begins to feel less like playacting and more like love.
The Christmas Dress · Joanna Barker
Seamstress Nell Addington is thrilled when her childhood friend Jacob Hammond commissions a dress for his sister. But when Nell realizes her feelings for Jacob run far deeper than friendship, an unexpected snowstorm—and some holiday cheer—may convince them both that love is worth fighting for.
I love that I get to write a review on one of my books but actually for other authors as well. First of all, this has been such a fun project. I was ecstatic when I heard who would be working with me on this Anthology, and none of the authors disappointed.
1. Christmas at Falstone Castle by Sarah Eden. Any other Seeking Persephone lovers out there? I loved that we got to see the Dangerous Duke once again, this time he is older, wiser, and less broken. Not to mention his family is growing. Sarah's story was sweet and funny, just as I have come to expect her novels to be. We get to see a more personal side to his mother as she battles a few demons and gets a first chance at choosing love.
2. The Heart of Christmas by Anita Stansfield. I loved the Christmas feeling of hope and healing in this short story. The romance was sweet and I was totally on board with Addie and Theo making a match of things as soon as Theo was introduced. And the hearts! So perfect. I loved it. This is definitely "a pour yourself some cocoa and sit and enjoy the spirit of Christmas" story.
3. 'Tis the Season to be Daring by Esther Hatch. I may be biased, but I really enjoyed both reading and writing this story. I fell in love with Charles and Elizabeth while writing The Roses of Feldstone, and not long after had this story pop into my head as to how they met. I loved getting to know them better, especially Charles. How can you not love Charles? That happens to be Elizabeth's problem as well.
4. The Christmas Dress by Joanna Barker. "Blast her Bonnet." Such a fun beginning to a sweet and endearing Christmas romance. Joanna's stories are always filled with quotable lines so picking just one or two is not a simple endeavor, but I loved this insight. "Just because you recognize your blessings, does not mean your trials hurt any less." Things can still hurt even if overall our lives are good. But I digress... Nell was sweet, Jacob a swoon-worthy upright hero, and the Christmas spirit abounds in this one.
As with most short stories, I would have loved for these to be longer, but as Austen said, "If a book is well written, I always find it too short."
I hope you all love this Christmas collection as much as I did. Each story ended with me having a smile on my face and gratitude in my heart that I could be a part of such a wonderful collaboration.
Loved them all! Keep reading for my thoughts for each individual novella! This is a treasure trove for lovers of Regency era stories as well as Christmas novella lovers! Enjoy!
~Christmas at Falstone Castle · Sarah M. Eden~ This book was like coming home. I have loved reading Sarah Eden's books since she first started publishing them. I have followed the Lancaster family through all their ups and downs. And to be able to read this sweet novella that shows love and family and healing, yes, definitely felt like coming home. This book is written more from the perspective of Adam's mom. If you've read Seeking Persephone then you will know who Adam is...the Duke of Kielder. He's gruff and a little rough around the edges but once you truly get to know his character, he's just a giant teddy bear inside. I loved learning more about his mom and watching her heal and heal bring healing for her and Adam's relationship. Plus, she gets her own sweet romance story. Happy sigh! If you're a Sarah M. Eden fan...you're gonna love this one!
~The Heart of Christmas · Anita Stansfield~ 5*~ I loved the characters in this one. Sweet story of healing and coming to love. Addie was able to help see the need for healing within Theo's household. I loved how the author was able to show the dynamics of Addie coming into a new home and the skepticism of Marla and Becky was slowly dissolved as Addie was able to gain their trust. I loved how she saw a need a searched for the most gentle way to help. Very sweet!
~’Tis the Season to Be Daring · Esther Hatch~ Oh my heart! This one might be my favorite of the three! Although I loved them all. I loved the title, it reflected the story perfectly! When you think you know what you're doing, and trying to get yourself out of moments...only to find yourself completely immersed in what you were trying to avoid. Does that make sense? If not, read this fabulous story and find yourself laughing at the antics of the characters and sighing at the sweet and swoony romance! Absolutely loved this one!
~The Christmas Dress · Joanna Barker~ This one was a sweet and tender story. There were some moments of extreme angst and frustration where I wanted to shake a couple characters. Mainly just the crazy and "bad" characters. Although they weren't extremely bad. Just kinda, sorta... The renewed friendships and healing story were very sweet. I laughed at the antics of the characters trying to find ways to make sure that the two main characters conveniently were in the same place at the same time. It was great and brought a smile to my face!
Overall, this one truly deserves 5 plus stars. Each story was wonderfully written and told. Plenty of sweet and swoony romance. Fun Christmas stories that can really be enjoyed anytime of the year. But if you're strictly a read Christmas stories at Christmas kinda person, read it this Christmas season, or every year, and be whisked away to a lovely Regency winter wonderland, full of hope, joy and love!
Content: Clean. Sweet kisses and nothing further.
I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
What a fun book this was to read. This is my first Christmas book to read this year for the holiday season and what a perfect book it was to kick it off. Four authors come together to give us novella length books in this holiday collection that is guaranteed to put you in the holiday mood while you're drinking your peppermint tea and eating plum pudding. I have not read any of these author's before and was pleased with all the stories . They all take place in Regency England during Christmas time and will give you that warm fuzzy feeling. Definitely recommended! Published September 1st 2019 by Covenant Communications. I was given a complimentary copy of this book. Thank you All opinions expressed are my own.
I loved most of these stories so much! It starts out with Sarah Eden's book that brought us back to the Lancaster family! This was a good story! More of Adam and his past and how he is healing his life. I loved it as Adam and Persephone are some of my all time fav of Eden's characters. This is more focused on his mother and her challenge and of course we get a romance:} The 2nd story is Anita Stansfield. Not a fav author of mine but I enjoyed her story. It is more about a woman healing a family and less of a romance but it fits nicely. The 3rd story is Ester Hatch's. Elizabeth and Charles!! Oh my gosh I loved this one so much! I wish it were longer but at the same time was so glad they got there HEA so quickly! Hatch just has a way of writing a regency but creating characters that I just love and are unique! The 4th story is so sweet and awesome. Has a bit of a Cinderella feel to it. Joanna Barker is quickly climbing to one of my favorite authors. I loved this sweet story!!! Such a fulfilling read. I wish I would have read it closer to Christmas! I think I'll have to reread it:} I received a copy for my honest review....and trust me it's honest:}
All Hearts Come Home for Christmas I have read all the books in the Lancaster Family series and feel I know the universe of characters well, but I found it helpful that this story begins with a map of family names and spouses. It made the transition into her universe of characters from previous books quick and easy. I appreciated that.
This story is about family coming together for Christmas, some in need of ironing out their strained relationships, others to just enjoy each other’s company. I found it a sweet Christmas story building on the Lancaster Family characters. As I have enjoyed Sarah M. Eden’s works so much, I had quite high expectations starting this read, but I felt it delivered and might even have been a little longer. It made a very nice start to this Christmas themed novella. It managed to put me in a pre-Christmas-mood.
Leading up to Christmas, Harriet, dowager Duchess of Kielder doesn’t know where to spend the holidays. Even if she doesn’t exactly feel welcome as the mother of Adam, Duke of Kielder, she decides to go to Falstone Castle. She is determined to work on her relationship with Adam and the family and get to know her grandson Oliver. She feels nervous but wants to get back with the family more than anything. Together with the local vicar, she makes a plan she hopes will show Adam that she seriously wants to make amends and that she wishes the Christmas celebrations to be happy for everyone.
The Heart of Christmas I had not read anything from this author before, so I was curious starting this read. It included all the ingredients I expect to find in a Christmas story. We get to follow Adelaide Moore who has fallen on hard times following her father’s death. She is working for room and board while dreaming of a better life when local banker Theodore Hardwick shows up in the dressmaker’s shop having lost a button in his coat. This proves to be the answers to Addie’s prayers as he offers her a job running his house and caring for his daughter Becky and ailing Aunt Marla.
The house is in a state of neglect. No tidying up or cleaning has been going on there in a long time, but little by little Addie manages to bring it in order and settle into a routine in the family. She gets to know Aunt Marla and they both enjoy each other’s company having meals together during the day. As days go by it becomes clear to Addie that there are serious underlying issues in this family that need attention, but they have to be handled delicately if she is to discover exactly what they are and how to deal with them. She takes on this challenge with the help of the daughter Becky. I really enjoyed this story and will be checking out other releases by this author very soon.
’Tis the Season to Be Daring Elizabeth Davenport finds it humiliating to be paraded around ballrooms of the London Season, while her mother tries to attract husband for her. –Preferably one with a title. She plans to chock her and Society just enough that she will be able to avoid the rest of the balls of the season without destroying her reputation entirely. For that she teams up with Lord Charles Hawthorne. He is known as the worst rule breaker who doesn’t care a toss what other people think of him and is the perfect ally for this plan. He makes sure to do whatever he wants. Rumor has it he is not interested in marriage at all. They play their tricks in public in the hopes that Elizabeth will become unsuitable as marriage material for titled men of that The Ton and her mother will give her a break from Society until next Season. Elizabeth and Charles spend quite a bit of time together to achieve this goal, but their plan starts to pan out differently than they expected….
Esther Hatch is another author of whom I have not read any previous releases, but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It was light and sweet with quite a few funny situations throughout. -Just my cup of tea. It managed to get me into the warm and fuzzy feeling of Christmas too. I will definitely check out other works from Esther Hatch in future.
The Christmas Dress Nell Addington is works for demanding dress shop owner Mrs Shaw. She has received a commission for a dress to Rachel Hammond so Nell is on her way to the dress fitting at Oakhurst Park when she meets her childhood friend Jacob Hammond, now the owner of the estate. Nell spends quite some time fitting Rachel’s dress in time for Christmas. They have a lovely time together and Nell gets to rekindle her relationship with Jacob, only now in a new way.
This is a sweet Christmas story with an unexpected snowstorm thrown into the mix. I quite enjoyed it. Entertaining read leading up to Christmas. (All opinions are my own)
Reading this Christmas collection transported me, at least for a little while, from the sweltering heat of a deep South summer. Four authors, four wonderful and heartwarming Christmas stories to help you feel that special Christmas spirit.
CHRISTMAS AT FALSONE CASTLE by Sarah M. Eden--I only discovered Sarah Eden's books within the last few years and haven't had a chance to read about the Lancaster family, but they've appeared in some of the Jonquil books I've read. This novella is from Adam's mothers point of view, and gives us more on the background of the infamous Duke of Kielder. Why he's the way he is. Once you get to know him he's not really so 'Dangerous'. I loved Adam's view of having mistletoe in the house, and his mother gets a happy ending too. This one will give you all the Christmas feels.
THE HEART OF CHRISTMAS by Anita Stansfield--A sweet story about a seamstress and a banker who meet when he needs to have a button reattached to his coat. Theo hiring Addie to help with his household brings long awaited healing to a family. I loved how the broken heart ornaments were repaired like Addie helped repair the hearts of Theo, Marla, and Becky. This is such a sweet Christmas story.
’TIS THE SEASON TO BE DARING by Esther Hatch--This story had so many fun elements. Elizabeth Davenport and her schemes--to be daring enough to miss out on the balls, but not so daring as to ruin her reputation made me almost laugh aloud. I loved when Lord Hawthorne (Charles) taught her to drive a carriage through Hyde Park. This was a fun fake-relationship-turns-to-love story.
THE CHRISTMAS DRESS by Joanna Barker--Not only is this a second chance romance, but Nell and Jacob are not on the same rung of the social ladder. They have a funny meet-cute when Nell's hat gets in a tree by the brisk wind. This is another lovely Christmas story of a family in need of healing. I loved Nell's attitude about life and her kindness towards Jacob's sister, Alice.
This is a wonderful collection to give you all the Christmas feelings. Thanks to NetGalley and Covenant Communications for my copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are mine.
I had never read any of these authors before and was quite pleasantly surprised. This is a compilation of absolutely delightful stories set in Regency England at Christmas time. Each one is unique in its own way and very precious. I thoroughly enjoyed this read. Recommended.
*My thanks to the publisher for a preview copy of this book. The opinions stated here are my own.
ALL HEARTS COME HOME FOR CHRISTMAS is a lovely novella collection of four historical romance stories set at Christmastime. Each is unique and can be read on their own, but it is a pleasure to read all four, leaving the reader with smiles and a heart full of warmth. Perfect for the Christmas season or any time a reader is seeking a little Christmas cheer.
Christmas at Falstone Castle by Sarah M. Eden
How I adored this story! Of course I'm familiar with all the characters having read Eden's previous books, which made this story so much fuller and endearingly sweet. Every time I read another story with Adam and Persephone it makes me want to go back and read Seeking Persephone again as it's still one of my favorite stories. Eden always does a marvelous job in inviting readers into the hearts of her characters and that is definitely the case here. Highly recommended!
The Heart of Christmas by Anita Stansfield
This story was sweet from beginning to end. It's like sitting and listening to a story being read that will warm your heart. The romance felt more friendly, like a love the blooms from daily friendship than from attraction and chemistry. This author's style is to tell the story more than to experience it with that characters and limited dialogue, but you can't help love her characters and enjoy seeing them find their happily-ever-after.
'Tis the Season to Be Daring by Esther Hatch
Oh my gosh! This story! I could not keep a smile off my face with the antics of these characters, the flirting, and the outright chemistry that jumped off the pages. There were also moments of depth that the author masterfully woven among the humor and romance that touched my heart, pulling emotions and a yearning for love for these two characters. A story not to be missed!
The Christmas Dress by Joanna Barker
This story starts with such a humorous scene and I loved it! It grabbed my attention immediately and created an easy introduction to the two main characters. It was fun seeing the affect they had on each other and especially how Jacob felt his world shift. He was at a loss for how to right it and then realized he didn't want to. It was enjoyable watching him try to catch Nell when he could and the way Alice caught on. I almost felt like snickering myself. I also couldn't help wanting to cheer when Jacob saves the day again a meddling woman in the end. A fabulous read!
In the end, was it what I wished for? I enjoyed each of these stories and definitely recommend grabbing this collection, especially at Christmastime. Each provided lovable characters, plenty of smiles, and the sweetness of a happily-ever-after amidst Christmas cheer.
Content: Clean Source: I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, which did not require a positive review nor affect it in any way.
I couldn't wait to open this collection of Christmas stories by some of my favorite authors in All Hearts Come Home for Christmas. It will definitely put the Christmas spirit into your heart!
The first story, Christmas at Falstone Castle, revisits some of my favorite characters from Sarah Eden's previous books, including the Duke of Kielder and his family. In this story, his mother is trying to make amends and it is so heart-wrenching and heartwarming at the same time. Sarah Eden's particular talent is how she can truly bring out the emotions in her stories and allow her readers to experience the events along with the characters. I loved the genuine love story that truly brings out the magic of the Christmas season.
Anita Stansfield's story, The Heart of Christmas, is such a gentle romance between a seamstress and a banker who also has a little girl to care for. They've all experienced loss and heartache and this is story will tug on your heartstrings as they try to heal and find love and become a true family again.
Esther Hatch's story was so charming! Lord Hawthorne is completely taken aback by Miss Davenport and her boldness that is intertwined with a proper young lady. The "driving lesson" was a particularly well-done scene and I loved the subtle humor between our hero and heroine. This one definitely brings out the magic of the season!
The last one by Joanna Barker, The Christmas Dress is a second chance romance that is so sigh-worthy you will be turning pages long into the night to see if they get their happily-ever-after! Nell has led a difficult life, but loves her job as a seamstress--mostly. But when she's tasked to make a dress for Jacob Hammond's sister, and is able to spend time with Jacob again, old feelings come to the surface. But could they ever find happiness together?
All four stories were sweet and will be a wonderful start to colder weather and the Christmas season. Not to be missed!
This is a great collection of sweet novellas. I’m a huge fan of Sarah M. Eden, and I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve read by Esther Hatch and Joanna Barker, so it was hard to go wrong with this book. I can see myself pulling this out to read again.
Christmas at Falstone Castle by Sarah M. Eden was especially fantastic. I was so glad to have a continuation of the Dangerous Duke’s family and the Lancasters. It’s a fun story that focuses on Adam’s mom and her own love interest. It was a very sweet, clean read. It wasn’t too rushed as some novellas can be. Lovely story with a happy ending.
5 stars
The Heart of Christmas by Anita Stansfield started out strong for me, and then some parts seemed to drag, while others were rushed. It is a sweet story about overcoming grief, but I didn’t really connect to the characters.
2 stars
Tis the Season to be Daring by Esther Hatch is a fun story about a couple in a fake relationship that ends up falling for each other. It was sweet, well written and engaging.
4 stars
The Christmas Dress by Joanna Barker was another sweet story. It was a fast read, but not too rushed, and the old acquaintanceship that strengthened into a relationship was sweet. Nell also helped Jacob’s sister come out of her shell.
I read “Seeking Persephone” as well as the Lancaster family series, so this was a particular favorite of mine to re-visit characters! The duke of Kielder is almost as grumpy as ever, but he seems to have mellowed quite a bit under the light of his wife & children. His relationship with his mother, the Dowager Duchess, however has been strained for years. Watching them get past the hurts and form a closer bond was delightful, as well as seeing her grandchildren blossom under her love & care. Not to mention the second chance love Harriet unexpectedly gets. A story of true Christmas miracles of reconciliation, family bonds, laughter and love. Very heartwarming!
The Heart of Christmas by Anita Stansfield
A chance meeting has all the makings of finding love at Christmas! I really enjoyed this one and getting to know Adelaide, Theodore and his daughter Becky. He's widowed trying to raise his young daughter and care for his ailing mother, which is difficult at best. Meeting Adelaide “Addie” has destiny written all over it! When she agrees to care for his family while he works, her soft heart sees the weight of grief in each one and desires to help heal them under her tender care. Reconciliation is sweet in this tale of healing and the stirrings of new love. Simply delightful!
'Tis the Season to be Daring by Esther Hatch
This was a fun one! Watching the banter between Elizabeth and Charles as they pretend to be courting during the London season was the highlight for me. Thwarting her mother seems to be the highlight of Elizabeth's life and Charles is so unconventional he's the perfect candidate for her plans. But then her feelings get tangled up and it's no longer a game! Can these two find common ground and will love conquer all? A warm, witty, delightful Christmas tale!
The Christmas Dress by Joanna Barker
It's been years since Nell and Jacob have seen each other. When he commissions her to create dresses for his sister Alice, they find feelings still strong towards one another. But under the cloud of grief can Nell bring happiness and laughter once again to the Hammond house? Christmas has a way of working it's magic spell and stirring hearts. I loved watching Alice and Jacob let go of their burden and remembering the fun of past Christmases. These two blossomed under the care & concern Nell showed, and watching the love story unfold was an added bonus to this already heartwarming tale!
Four stories of the magic of Christmas working it's miracles in hearts and lives made me smile, laugh and care about characters who become real in my mind. I knew Sarah Eden from other stories so it was wonderful to discover new writers in this collection of short novellas. Each one is perfect for the Christmas season & beyond. Sit down with a cup of hot cocoa, a throw blanket over your lap, and enjoy as these take you away to a different time & place!
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from Covenant Communications and was under no obligation to leave a favorable review. All opinions are my own. *
Oh, the joy of reading! This book was so much fun to read. Sometimes I get so bogged down in my reading list that I lose track of how much fun it is to read. This collection reminded me of the joy and contentment that come from reading a good book.
This collection of novella's feature some of my favorite author's. Particularly, my favorite character of all time. Sarah Eden was brilliant when she created the character of Adam, the Duke of Kielder. "Christmas at Falstone Castle" revealed some of Adams past and laid a basis for his cantankerous, ornery, snarky self. Seriously, I considered the story a heaven of words.
Anita Stansfield's story was sweet. It made me think of the joy of finding a home and people to love. The spirit of Christmas was present in the story. Self-sacrifice and acceptance of another make the season brighter.
I think I think I may have a little book crush on Charles from Esther Hatch's story. The characters were light and fun. They were on the daring side of Regency behavior. I couldn't wait to get back to the story whenever I had to take a break. I was a very unconventional story. I relished every moment of it.
Nell in "The Christmas Dress" was a wonderful character to read about. To continually look at the good part of life even when circumstances haven't treated you kindly is a gift. Her talents do not stop at being a seamstress. She breathes life back into a family in desperate need of cheer.
My take on this collection? Read it! You won't be sorry.
Source: I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
I loved each of these stories! Sarah Eden's made me want to go back and read Seeking Persephone again (which I just did) and in this novella it was wonderful to see even more healing take place between Adam and his mother, as well as her own second chance at love.
The Heart of Christmas was heartwarming and lovely as Addie brings light into a family who needs a few nudges out of their grief and back together.
'Tis the Season to Be Daring was my favorite of the collection for its romance! Lord Hawthorne and Miss Davenport both had fun personalities and brought the laughter out in each other. A wonderful falling-in-love story as pretend love turns into the real thing.
I also enjoyed the blossoming romance in The Christmas Dress. The difference in social status between Nell and Jacob provide the conflict as they are reunited and rekindle their friendship. His sister helps move things along with a little matchmaking and gentle encouragement and I enjoyed their sibling relationship as well.
(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)
I loved all four stories in this Christmas collection. They are all perfect to cozy up with a blanket and enjoy for the Chrismas season. I read each story in a sitting and I felt like each one was a complete story, not rushed like other short story collections I have read before. I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys Christmas or Regency stories.
I received a free copy of this book. All thoughts above are my own.
Enchanting historical romance novellas by some of my favorite authors. A definite read for the holiday season. Each story has its own theme, character arcs, and .... well....romance. Can't wait to read more by these ladies.
This should probably get more like 3.5 stars, but eh I'm feeling generous. And I'm realizing that I've read enough of these, and I should probably write about the individual stories so I can actually remember which anthology they come from. So here goes.
(1) I was SO excited to read this book because this anthology contains Sarah M. Eden's novella, Christmas at Falstone Castle, which I have been dying to read because it would let me revisit my favorite Sarah M. Eden romance, Adam and Persephone! And I loved it for that. The real romance was with Adam's mom and a neighbor, and I was excited about that because we don't get old romance in the proper romance world. Sadly, though, I just didn't really fall for their romance, so I was bummed about that. (2) The Heart of Christmas by Anita Stansfield was bad. The heroine was soooo one dimensional. Too "perfect." Loved cooking and cleaning. Magically healed the trauma of her love interest's family in a very short amount of time. Overall, I was eye-rolling through most of it, and didn't enjoy this one. (3) 'Tis the Season to be Daring by Esther Hatch. WOW. READ THIS ANTHOLOGY JUST FOR THIS ONE SHORT STORY. IT WAS SO GOOD. I think it's one of the best stories I have read in these anthologies and I have read a LOT this year. Esther Hatch is becoming my new favorite proper romance author! (Besides Julianne Donaldson of course but she hasn't come out with new books in a long time so I gotta have a back up). It was so fun! I loved the two main characters, especially the guy because he was hilarious. The plot was pretty unique and I had so much fun seeing them throw social customs to the wind and be completely ridiculous. I almost read this short story twice. I didn't. But I almost did. And maybe I still will? So that should tell you something. This story alone made me round up the anthology one whole star. (4) The Christmas Dress by Joanna Barker. I would describe this short story as what I typically expect to find in these anthologies. Which is that it makes me roll my eyes and smile in about equal measure. The story, characters, and plot weren't original, but it was still cute. My other complaint would be that the regency speech seemed way forced. Way too many uses of the word/conjunction "shan't." As in, if I see that word more than zero times it is too many times. But again, the ending was cute and it's what I came for.
So here are my final thoughts. If you see this anthology on sale for less than $2 on kindle, get it. Just so that you can read Esther Hatch's short story. That story alone is worth the $2.
5 Stars: 5/5 star rating This novella collection is one of the best I have ever read! I really enjoyed these novellas and reading it at Christmastime made it even more special! Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres and adding romance makes it a winner! Thank you to the authors for making my holiday reading even more special. I received a digital ARC of this book from netgalley and Covenant Communications in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions expressed are my own.
I really enjoyed this collection of historical (regency?) romances by four different Christian romance authors. Any Christianity in the stories is not overt. They are mainly nice and clean and sweet stories.
Most of the stories involve down-on-their-luck females of good birth and noble men with a heart of gold. Lovely to read under an Afghan with a cup of tea.
This compilation of Christmas romances was fine. This is the second one of these I've read and it always piques my interest and makes me want to read more by the featured authors (and then I forget to follow through).
Perfect book to read right before Christmas. This book is a collection of four regency romances set at Christmas-time and the third novella, 'Tis The Season To Be Daring, was by far my favorite! It had me laughing and anxiously anticipating what was going to happen. I wished the story had been a full length novel!
Perfect for this Christmas season!! this book has four light hearted Christmas stories. So fun to have some of my favorite authors in one book. Esther Hatch is such a great author! I love how she can easily add humor to her stories.
What do you do when four of your favorite Regency romance authors release a Christmas book in September? You have Christmas in September…obviously! I loved everything about this book, the novellas in it are so great! They put me in the mood for Christmas. Now if only the weather would cool down!
First up is Christmas at Falstone Castle by Sarah M Eden. Yay for Adam, The Dangerous Duke aka The Duke of Kielder. He is my favorite Sarah Eden character hands down. I love the way he says whatever pops into his head. But he obviously has a soft side too. And no, he’s not the main character, but he’s in the book a lot. His mother Harriet is the main character.
I love how this one shows a lot of Adam’s backstory, it shows the reader why he is how he is. But it also shows that there’s always a second chance for love. I loved everything about it!
Next up is The Heart of Christmas by Anita Stansfield. I enjoyed this one too. It features Addie. She’s a seamstress. One day a man comes in out of the cold and offers her a one of a kind job. She takes it, and I loved the way not only does her life change for the better, but those she cares for in her new job as well. I loved the way hearts change because of love and Christmas becomes new in this one.
‘Tis the Season to be Daring by Esther Hatch is next. I loved Elizabeth in this one. She made me laugh out loud several times. It was fun how she wanted to be just scandalous enough to miss the rest of the season, but not completely ruin her reputation. This one left me wanting more!
Last up is Joanna Barker’s The Christmas Dress. I loved Nell in this one. She’s a seamstress, but she always seems to be in a bit of trouble. Especially at the worst of times, like when Jacob Hammond is watching her. Nell and Jacob have known each other for years, but lost touch. I loved everything about their sweet love story.
Each of these novellas is enchanting. This book will leave you ready for Christmas!
A wonderful collection of Christmas stories by some of my favorite Regency authors.
Christmas at Falstone Castle - Everytime I read a new addition to one of Sarah Eden's series I have the strong desire to lock myself away and devour the series from beginning to end. I love the Lancaster family and the Dangerous Duke. It was so fun reading about them all again. Harriet and Roswell are such lovely people. It was sweet following their relationship with each other and with different members of the family. I loved this second chance at love for both of them.
The Heart of Christmas - One of my favorite Christmas books that I try to read each December is by Anita Stansfield. I love how her stories bring the spirit of Christmas and this one did as well. This was a beautiful story about healing, especially at Christmas time. Addie is so wonderful and does so much to help Theo, Marla and Becky. It is really beautiful. The romance is more on the sly in this story, but the story was so wonderful I didn't really mind.
Tis the Season To Be Daring - Oh I loved this story. I laughed a lot. What started out as Elizabeth trying to thwart her mother's matchmaking turned into an experience where Elizabeth found herself with the help of wonderful Charles. He is so fun and crazy and they are just wonderful together. A great story about throwing caution to the wind, especially if you're an earl. ;)
The Christmas Dress - Another great Christmas story! I love that Nell got to share the magic of Christmas with Jacob and Alice. This was such a sweet story of Nell and Jacob falling in love. I loved it! They are both amazing people and so good for one another.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher. This review is my honest opinion.
Fun collection of romantic Christmas stories. We didn't finish before Christmas, but it was still winter so I feel like that counts. I like that we also were exposed to some new appropriate romance authors. We'll have to pick some of those up (the "we" in this is me and my wife--we love reading these together).
WHAT IT'S ABOUT Christmas at Falstone Castle · Sarah M. Eden The Heart of Christmas · Anita Stansfield ’Tis the Season to Be Daring · Esther Hatch The Christmas Dress · Joanna Barker
Four sweet Christmas stories set in the Regency period. Christmas at Falstone is a reunion of Dangerous Duke's family and that of his wife's. It was fun to get to see how the various couples have been doing and share some time together. There was a lovely romance mature romance too.
MY TAKE The Heart of Christmas was a tender story of a young woman's ability to heal a family. The Christmas Dress also followed that theme, and both stories had likeable characters.
"Tis the Season to be Daring is my favorite story by Esther Hatch. I loved how Elizabeth wanted to get out of the last of the season's events and the yucky men her mother kept introducing her to with marriage in mind. Elizabeth decides to take matters in hand and do something that won't QUITE ruin her but get her into enough trouble to be excluded from the social events. She decides to be daring in approaches Lord Hawthorne is has a reputation for being ALMOST disreputable. What he turns out to be is unconventional. And a delight.
Christmas at Falstone Castle was fun even though it was written about the old Dowager Duchess. It lets you glimpse little pockets of what the Duke's life was like years later. I adore him and Persephone. I wish she would write another book about their lives.
’Tis the Season to Be Daring was very clever and witty. I loved the bantering and unique story line. I wish she would have written a whole book with this story line.
The Christmas Dress was unique as well and I loved how they were friends first which really helped sell the love story later on.
The Heart of Christmas bothered me because she was just telling what was going on and not showing it. I didn't feel the the chemistry between the main protagonists. She was in love with him before there was ever a deep conversation. Even the deep conversation was told and not shown. Addie was practically perfect in every way and not relatable. The family thanked her so many times I was about to scream. I prefer more dialogue, specifically dialogue that moves the story forward. I realize it's hard to cover everything you want in a novella but I was hoping for more.
If you like historical romance with a Christmas flavor, you'll love this collection.
Christmas at Falstone Castle · Sarah M. Eden: It was really fun to catch up with the Duke of Kielder, his family and friends, and to know more of why his relationship with his mother was so strained. The ending was lovely.
The Heart of Christmas · Anita Stansfield This had the potential to be a really great story with interesting characters, but the execution was lacking (too much telling, not enough showing).
’Tis the Season to Be Daring · Esther Hatch One of my favorites in this collection. I loved the way their relationship started and how it developed from there.
The Christmas Dress · Joanna Barker Another of my favorites. Very sweet story. I loved the characters and how they knew each other before.
I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
I'm glad I decided to read this book. I generally don't read much anthologies. I like stories that are longer. But I really love all these authors and couldn't resist. This is a great compilation of Christmas Spirit and finding a little happiness and love! I can tell you that I did shed a tear or two while reading each of these stories. That shows how much they affected me!
My only complaint or something is that I was sad to read the Dangerous Duke's wife's delivery in here. I was hoping to read it in the next story. If I hadn't picked it up or that I got some warning about who Sarah Eden was writing about, I might have missed it and I so love the Dangerous Duke!
If you like short stories, holiday anthologies, Christmas Spirit, traditions, dressmaker's, finding love than this might be for you!
