New Year's Resolutions

Rate this book
A Downing Street Gay Romance.

Britain’s Prime Minister Mathias Parker, 28, is smart, sophisticated, and sexy as hell. Police Sergeant Daniel Kent, 36, is the PM’s bodyguard. But not for much longer: Daniel has decided to quit. Because Mathias isn’t the obnoxious prat Daniel expected, but the sweetest man he has ever met. And because their intimate nightly encounters aren’t simply recreational, as he’s been trying to convince himself. For Daniel at least, they’ve come to mean something so much more—something that cannot be…

Daniel Kent never was a fan of Prime Minister Mathias Parker, the hyper-brilliant political wunderkind with the killer cheekbones and the hipster Instagram, and he certainly didn't vote for him. So, when Daniel started out as the PM's personal protection officer at 10 Downing Street, the last thing he expected was falling in love.
But in the long days and nights he's spent watching over his young client, Daniel has come to realize that Mathias Parker is more than just talent, looks, and natural leadership: he's a man of true integrity and determined to serve his country no matter the personal cost.
Daniel and Mathias become friends, then friends with benefits. Neither of them talks about their feelings, but the simple fact is, the young Prime Minister with the unexpected submissive streak has stolen Daniel's heart.
When disaster strikes and Mattie nearly gets killed by a would-be assassin, Daniel blames his feelings for his failure to react like the professional he is.
The Prime Minister needs to be kept safe. That's all that matters, and Daniel's decision stands: He’s going to quit, and he’s going to tell Mattie before the year is out. It’s December 31, so this means tonight.
But Mattie has got something to tell Daniel too...

NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS is a Contemporary Gay Romance set in an alternate Britain at some point in the not-so-distant future containing a bodyguard caught between duty and love, the hottest Prime Minister in British history, major mischief after hours in in 10 Downing Street, close protection, a special moment on national television, and a happy ending.

Mathias and Daniel

I was completely swooned by this delightful story.
Great Britain’s Prime Minister and his bodyguard. It was everything, I loved it hard!

There is a lot going on behind closed doors of 10 Downing Street.
Daniel is smitten by all this sweet, delicate, integer hardworking Mathias does. He will never show of course but he respects him enormously and his feelings are getting deeper for this man.. Soft and kind Mathias is very attentive to all Daniel does.
Daniel protects him with his life, Mathias gives over his trust and heart.
One night he very kindly and politely asks Daniel if he may go down on his knees for him... *swoon* goshhhh From that moment the heat is on.
When Daniel understands his feelings are working against Mathias’ safety because somewhere he lost his focus, he only can do one thing, quit. How can he ever leave the love of his life, but he has to!

Awesomeness, everything about this story was awesomeness!
Sweet, kind, honest feelings. My heart did strange things in my chest.
This excellently developed story around these two men had so many feelings, I found it all very plausible. Together they were delicious, from the very first moment I had strong feelings for them.
There are humor, sexiness, love and some devastating moments.
I adored this story!

Oh i dont know what i expected going into this book, but it was different and i enjoyed it a lot. Very sweet story, with interesting writing style that rather grew on me. The story is told entirely in first person from Daniels pov, except for the epilogue which is from Mathias Pov.

In a lot of ways i loved how this was first person and the chapter layout as seemed fitting to the story. Almost reads like a journal as starts on new years eve then takes back to their first meeting and various moments of their relationship development, leading up to new years eve.

Seeing Daniel fall in love was beautiful and could really feel all his emotions, as he gets to know Mathias and see him in a new light. Its so sweet! These two fit together wonderfully and neither of them is perfect, both are flawed and i loved seeing that so much. Get to see how they explore together and Daniel is wonderful, i did love how he looked over his feelings and affect on his work.

They both try to do the right thing and yet some micommunication in places, luckily its not for long and i adore their happy ending.

Also the epilogue is perfection and i wish had got some of Mathias pov throughout, as would have allowed to see his feelings more as until then i definitely saw the situation similar to Daniel. But then i guess it works that way as go on journey with Daniel and see through his eyes, fall for him through his interactions and observations of Mathias so i loved them both anyway.

Overall a fun, sweet and short read with plenty of steam to enjoy too! Xx

One might argue that a bodyguard/protected romance is nothing new, not even if the client is the prime minister. And I might agree, if the book wasn't written by Crystel Greene. Like in any other book I've read by this author, the love the main characters feel for each other is the kind I'd wish for myself, because what Daniel feels for his Mattie is complete and absolute, full of tenderness and adoration.

New Year's Resolutions is rather short, but packed with intense emotions. It's a light read, sweet, hot and funny that made me swoon and filled me with wormth. Recommended.

Oh boy did this hit the spot. Short and sweet, but perfect in its brevity; no unneeded story elements.
And it's Free at the moment... Thank you Crystel!
10/23 Re-read:
This did not improve on second reading, in fact I knocked off a star. It struck me as way too sentimental and ungrounded in reality this time around. I love this trope, but it's been done so much better by Tal Bauer and MA (formerly Adam) Fitzroy.

Overall: 3.5 stars.
First half: 4-5 stars.
Second half: 3 stars.

The first half had such a sweet, slowburning love that almost sneaks up on Daniel. The way the prologue hints at future struggles makes Daniel's feelings even sweeter. The narration is almost poetic.

After the incident, I wish they would communicate with each other.

I think lovers of Red, White & Royal Blue will like this story.

PM and his own body guard!!

A fairy tale like romance between the PM of UK and his body guard. There are plenty of things beyond belief here, but the story is rather sweet and you go along with the flow.

DNF... Didn't like being just dropped into the middle of their relationship. Felt like starting halfway through a book honestly.

An entertaining read, takes place a few years in the future (the Queen is over 100 and there is a female president), plus England is very accepting of a gay PM! Oh, we could wish!! Overall, I really enjoyed this story. Sweet, lovely and sexy MC's - what more could you want?

We start the book with Daniel determined to end their relationship on New Year's Eve and the we jump to how their relationship started to show how we got to that point. I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The MCs are Mathias Parker, Britain's young and charismatic Prime Minister, and Daniel Kent, his dedicated bodyguard. Their relationship evolves from professional to deeply personal, filled with tension and unexpected romance.

Mathias is portrayed as smart, sophisticated, and surprisingly sweet, while Daniel is strong, stoic, and initially skeptical of Mathias. Their chemistry is undeniable, and I found myself rooting for them from the start. The narrative beautifully captures their journey from guarded colleagues to lovers, highlighting their emotional struggles and growth.

The setting of 10 Downing Street adds an intriguing backdrop, and the intimate moments between Mathias and Daniel are both steamy and heartfelt. The plot is engaging, with moments of humor and drama that keep the story moving. Certain elements of the plot can feel expected, and some of the secondary characters lack depth.

The novel offers a delightful blend of romance, humor, and political intrigue. It’s a compelling read with a touch of real-world relevance. Following Mathias and Daniel's journey is both entertaining and heartwarming.

This book definitely ended up surprising me. I love a good secret relationship romance between a bodyguard and a client and was swayed by the blurb to give this one a try. I wasn't expecting to go back into the past to see how their relationship developed and I felt it was a little slow moving in the beginning. As their relationship developed I fell more and more in love with Mattie and Daniel and was rooting for them in the end. To see how much Daniel loved Mattie and how the events unfolded I understood where he was coming from, in terms of quitting. It was a little hard to see and understand how Mattie felt for Daniel until the end. I absolutely loved the way he did it. I do wish the book could have been a dual POV. I want to know how Mattie was thinking through some of the events. To see Daniel struggle with fighting his feelings for Mattie, it felt real and that is something I love in books. I am a sucker for an epilogue that shows how the couple is doing in the future and although we only get 6 months later I absolutely loved the epilogue. I think it really helped me decide to give the book 4 stars.

Okay, that stopped me for a moment.
I had to go back and re-read, just to make sure I read that right.
I wasn't expecting the salad dressing. Dripping mayonnaise. Okay.
That gave me pause. I kept thinking of a book challenge years ago, that required something unusual used in place of lube.

Matt's description was hard for me to picture as him being the prime minister.
Also the queen being over a 100 always made me pause.
"Cost-of-Duty" t-shirt.
The story was sweet. Not super involved.
But then, I don't usually expect a holiday story to get super detailed, with twists and turns. So it worked well as a holiday story.

It took me a long time to finish this. I know, it's very short.
But 1/2 way through I abandoned it completely.
I'm glad I went back and finished. The ending was very cute.

This was a good story with some action and a satisfying dose of heat. The interesting dichotomy to Daniel and Mathias made for a good story and romance and the writing was smooth with a good blend of dialogue, narrative, and palpable emotion. I also liked how Daniel’s feelings built steadily for Mattie over the course of the novella, so it felt as though he appreciated the person rather than it feeling like a lust-fueled relationship . Overall this was an enjoyable, quick read.

Good Book

I love reading bodyguards romances. What started off as friends with benefits with Mattie and Daniel became real. Daniel job was to protect Mattie who is the Prime Minister of Great Britain. They both fell in love with each other. Happy that they are together.

I really enjoyed this story in spite of the things I didn’t like about it but overall it was worth its 4*. I’m not keen on writing using the present tense as it’s rarely done well unless there’s a good editor in the background. However, I could see why the author chose to use it, as it implied the present day, although set in a mythical future. Most of the book was written using the past tense though, as most of the action occurred as flashbacks, so it became a non-issue as I read further. I also had a few problems with the political background to the book. In the UK, the Prime Minister is not elected (doesn’t even have to be an MP, in fact) but is the leader of the party that gains most seats in Parliament after an election or can gather enough support to form a government coalition. An independent MP without a party backing them would not really be able to do that, even in the dystopian political climate the author implies.
MC Daniel Kent is the PM’s bodyguard and has committed the cardinal sin – developed a sexual relationship with his client and then fallen in love with him. The secrecy is very unprofessional but does make for a good story. On New Year’s Eve, he decides he can’t do it any more and needs to tell the PM he is resigning. From that point on, we learn how their relationship started, developed and ultimately led to the PM being attacked on a visit to Wales. Daniel blames himself as he thinks his mind was more on Matthias the man, rather than on Matthias the leader of government.
Most of the book was written from Daniel’s POV but it would have been good to understand Matthias’s thoughts and feelings, especially at the pivotal points in the story. However, we have to read the book as it was written, not the way we think the author could have done it. Overall, interesting and worthwhile and I would definitely read a sequel if one appeared.

This was a very sweet, very British MM romance, set in the not-so-distant future between the Prime Minister (Mathias) and his bodyguard Daniel.

It opens with Daniel planning to tell Mathias he’s going to quit. It’s then written from Daniel’s point of view as he tells the story about Mathias political rise and how Daniel’s own feelings developed. We come back to where the book started at around 55%

It was interesting to have a book talk so much about UK politics. Greene obviously did her research in the system, the budget and policies.

The first kiss moment was everything, and it had some really sexy moments and lines. I also enjoyed the speech at the end.

We have a nice epilogue that is told from Mathias’s point of view this time which I really appreciated.

In closing, it was a nice story, very cute but could have lived without reading it.
