Short fiction about supernatural dogs and a lost or stolen ring. I couldn't connect with the characters or plot. Being unfamiliar with this author or genre didn't help.
I got this for free somewhere and only just got around to reading it. I realise I should have read book 1 before it. But it didn't detract from my enjoyment or understanding, and infact makes me want to go and read the previous and the sequel.
I really enjoyed the introduction to this magic hidden world of fantasy creatures with their own rules, clans and wardens.
I really liked the banter of the characters and the underlying attraction between Samantha (a human ex detective going through divorce from her wife) and Lilith (a will-O-wisp, fairy-like fire siren). She is the heir to her clan.
The puppy hellhound was adorable! (Anyone who reads my reviews knows I love animals!)
3.5 stars out of 5 stars DISCLAIMER: this is a short story between book 1 and 2 of the 'Samantha Rain Mysteries'-series. I haven't read book one of this series. However, I feel like this short story is fine to read as a stand-alone.
In 'The Case Of The Puppy Academy' the reader goes to a dog school with Samantha Rain and her dog. During a break, a mystery pops up. Together with Lilith, Samantha decides to solve it.
Since the book is a short story (book 1.5 in a series), it is pretty short. Yet, the author was able to give a clear view of who the characters were and what the exact plot was. Which makes that you don't need to read book one to enjoy this story. There were a few terms about paranormal/magical creatures that I didn't properly understand, but the story was easy to follow. I loved the little Easter Eggs in this book. How the dog didn't seem as important, but in the end, it had a big role in the plot. The characters were round, which is unique for a short story. If you read the full series, the characters are already known by you. However, the author does give a little introduction to who the characters are. Another thing which I liked was the diversity of the characters. The main character is gay, but it's not an important element in the story. It's a simple detail that doesn't form the whole character 'Samantha'. She is more than just gay. There were a few moments where I thought the writing was a bit off. Some dialogues were a bit childish. I personally didn't like the writing style, because it made the story feel more like a children's book. Yet, for a non-native English speaker, it's easy to understand and great to practice your English. Even when I liked the plot, I wished it was a little more exciting and thrilling.
A shorter book with fairly two dimensional characters that spent half is time talking about how to train dogs (which most people already know, I would think), and the other half on a mystery that was obvious. The He'll hound puppy training idea was cute, but under terribly developed.
Samantha, a former detective, was required to take her hellhound puppy, Shadow, to the Academy for a mandatory 6-hour training and evaluation. Another warden, Aaron, began talking with her since his puppy was also in the class. When they started to the cafeteria later, Lilith Fatuus, Samantha’s boss and the IF Clan heir, met them in a surprise visit. She tried to get Sam to go across the street for better food choices, but Sam didn’t want to leave Shadow alone. Lilith agreed to eat at the cafeteria but complained the entire time and acted like the food was all tainted. Sam was surprised she had even come to the class at all.
As she was back early to class, the instructor warned her to avoid Lilith as much as possible. Sam immediately protected her friend and told the instructor to back off and not spread gossip. Then Lilith arrived to talk privately to Sam – her clan ring, a family heirloom, was missing from her finger. Lilith was ready to kill anyone she suspected, so Sam warned her not to throw around accusations since these people were all wardens of powerful families (think mafia). Sam told her to back off and Sam would investigate quietly to find the thief. She already had discovered that two months ago the thefts started – 5 items stolen so far. And the receptionist, Susie, had made a complaint about harassment. But Lilith still refused to leave her side and her volatile temper didn’t make this easy to quietly question staff. When Susie implied that the headmaster himself was the thief, she had even more to check out, along with an unreported theft just the day before! Could she figure this out in the one day Lilith agreed to “wait” -- before Lilith turned it into a serious turf war?
This was a very slow book, mostly talking about training the puppies before it incorporated the missing ring mystery. Sam’s “interest” in Lilith was more distracting/annoying than helpful in the investigation. I’m not fully vested in the series yet, but will give it another try on the next book.
When detective Samantha Rain takes her recently-adopted blue wisp hellhound, Shadow, for puppy training, she expects a room filled with adorable puppies, not a mystery surrounding missing jewelry. Can she find the answers without stepping on important Nox toes?
This paranormal mystery, part of the author’s Samantha Rain Mystery series, follows the intrepid Samantha into the Fae world of the Nox. Although the mystery is straightforward, it takes a while to actually get to it. There’s a lot of discussion on how to train puppies; less on the paranormal world in which the story takes place.
Fans of the Samantha Rain series are sure to enjoy this adventure, but for the rest, the unseen world needs a bit more clarification. Still, for readers who like puppies . . . .
Its such a cute , sweet short lgbtq+fantasy+mytery story . About a missing ring and how a hellhound and a detective him lilith to find it. Its kind of intresting to read short stories but totally worth it.
A very cute cozy mystery with clear f/f romance. However, I found it confusing as someone who hadn't read previous stories. So I had to dock down some stars just based on a little back story would have gone a long way. The world seemed fun, even if I was lost.
Not a standalone book. You need to read “The Case of the Night Mark” first.
It seems to be a popular thing to do at the moment to release one or more short books in a series for free in the hope of both attracting new readers and keeping familiar readers happy while waiting for the next book in the main series to be released. I picked this book up when it was free on Amazon and read it because I like cozy mysteries and short reads. I soon found that this book is not really a stand-alone or introductory book, but relies heavily on having already read at least the first book in the Samantha Rain series. Depending on where you look, this is either book1.5 or book 4 in the series. It assumes that the reader is already familiar with the setting and the characters, and it was a struggle to read without that prior knowledge.
What I could pick up from this story is that the main character (Samantha Rain) used to be a regular police officer, but now finds herself working as a “warden” among a strange magical society which seems to co-exist with our own. She has a boss, or partner, or friend (it’s not entirely clear) named Lilith Fatuus who is also a powerful clan leader in this underground society, and a magical puppy who Samantha has named Shadow to look after. The puppy is described as a “hellhound”, but all we get here is pure puppy. In this story, Samantha needs to take Shadow to some sort of puppy training. It’s not very clear what this entails because almost as soon as they arrive, they find out about some unexplained thefts and Samantha sets out to solve the mystery.
The setting for this story is interesting, and the little we see of the characters hints that they might be fun, too, but it is the mystery which lets this story down. Lilith is rightfully angry that her priceless signet ring has been stolen, but hardly anyone else seems to care that there has been a spate of jewelry thefts over the last few months. Samantha tries to interview some suspects, but never gets very far. It is never explained why none of the many other people who come in and out of the “Puppy Academy” could be a suspect, but they are all ignored in favour of asking an air-headed receptionist and the “headmaster” of the academy. Samantha immediately points the finger at the headmaster, but does nothing much about it except go for a drink, at which point she comes up with a completely different solution and everyone ends up happy.
It’s hard to tell much about the main series from this short book . I think the setting and characters could be interesting, but I am worried about the mysteries if the disappointing case in this one is an example. I strongly suggest that if you want to read this, you start by reading the first book in the series “The Case of the Night Mark””, first.
I became aware this short story is an in-between books. I am not familiar with the characters and story other than this short story.
Lesbian lead (love!!).. with a will they won't they kind of thing. I was looking for more story and mystery with the puppy and all that more than anything. I love short stories that hyper focus on things like that.
I do not like the female lead or her crush that is her boss. They are not great people and I like reading about people who aren't just gross to others for the sake of it.
The dialogue with her boss is kind of cringey. The boss acts like a teenager. It does not flow and it is kind of awkwardly built in this. Maybe it is the short story and having to pile in what you can under a set word count. But if you are in training to take over something that you're considered a mob boss I'd hope you didn't act... silly.
Also, the lead character was a dick toward the dog trainer at the facility they had to be at. Due to the person gossiping about her boss. I do not know which books this is between but it sounds like she's NEW to this world. Her boss TRICKED her into this world. And then, she's defending them obnoxiously at a facility where she needs to train. It's meant to be a neutral area but it didn't feel that way when she threatened to speak with the woman's Mob boss lady.
I did not like how they investigated. There was a lot of sloppy questioning and her boss has behavioral issues that need to be worked out. I like love interests who are level headed and so this was a bummer. I did like that the villain was cute animal things who liked shiny stuff.

I enjoyed this book. This was a really cute story with interesting characters to move it along.

To train a hellhound… …or is it training the Wardens? I mean, it’s the people who have to learn the commands, decide when to give out treats (or not), and enforce lessons. The dogs merely follow along… In addition to the hellhound training, Wardens learn the diplomacy necessary for resolving conflicts across the Nocturnal world.
Sometimes, there are reasons to warn people about somebody else. Especially, when toxic behavior is a pattern. Having said that, make sure your intel is correct before disclosing anything. On the other side of the coin, be gracious and respectful when somebody warns you about another person. Just because you like somebody, doesn’t mean that he or she is not toxic. Keep your mouth shut and your eyes & ears open, just in case. Forewarned is forearmed.
Fave line: ‘Speak of the devil …’ ‘…and she shall appear’.
The full cases in this series are: Night Mark, Pixie Deal, and Ruby Curse.
Our heroine is a detective with a new puppy that has to get trained. While in class, she discovers a mystery that needs to be solved before accusations start to flaw and cause a much bigger issue.
This is a short story in a series of books, but it works just fine as a standalone. No prior reading is required.
This is a paranormal mystery story with a slow burn FF romance in the making. The story is well written and easy to read, but perhaps lacking in depth. While the setting is interesting and I like the characters, this short story didn't give me enough detail about either to really satisfy. On the other hand, it was a fun and easy read which whet my appetite enough that I want to read more stories in the series. So perhaps it served its purpose after all.
Recommended.

I picked up this free eBook as I am a fan of Arizona Tape's Valkyrie series and this series looked interesting. I figure you really need to read book #1 first but as you read you can get a fairly good idea of the characters and their interactions. The story is a ho-hum mystery that most folks will figure quickly but Arizona Tape's strengths seen to be less in the storytelling and more in the slowly growing character interactions, and slow burn FF romances - no quick roll in the hay here! It looks like this series will be along those lines, i fthis floats your boat I am guessing this is a series for you. Oh, yes, lots of cute puppies too.
The Case of the Puppy Academy is an easy to read Novela that sets the stage for future adventures. There were some humorous moments as well as mini-dramas mostly caused by Lilith, the heir to the IF clan. The mystery part of the story was simple and easily resolved. It was also very entertaining as it involved a hellhound and some little creatures that hide in strange places. There appears to be a budding romance in the works that will most likely play out in future books in the series.

Warden Samantha Rain has a new hellhound pup, and it's the law that they must attend classes at The Puppy Academy. It sounds cute, but there's a thief about, and if a certain ring cannot be found, a war could erupt.
I haven't read anything else in this paranormal series, and I didn't need to do so to enjoy this short read. It was light and fun, and oh, all the cute puppies! It's very much a cozy paranormal mystery. Sam knows what she's about, but even this one is stumping her. Yet maybe her new pup might be of help.
Sam has taken her hellhound puppy to training and encounters an interesting group. Thefts are happening and her friend Lilith has lost her ring. If these thefts do not stop, there will be a war, so Sam needs to hurry up and solve the situation quickly. The characters do not have much depth or strong feelings, but their quirky traits are endearing. The story is light hearted and fun to read and the mystery was entertaining. It is very short, so a quick read while waiting for an appointment.

Missing Rings and Rowdy Puppies This is a pretty good introduction to a new series. Although the first episode comes out later, this story is actually Book 1.5. The fantasy/paranormal side of the story was very interesting and intriguing. The rest of the book was lesbian flirting and I found that very disconcerting. I received this ARC book for free from Booksprouts and this is my honest review.
I enjoyed this short fun read, which for me was an introduction to the world it is set in. I didn’t find it hard to pick up enough clues to follow what the world was like, it might be beneficial to have read some of the books in the series but I didn’t feel as though I was missing anything not having read them. I will be looking for more books in the series though because the world is quite compelling and I liked the characters and want to know more about their adventures.
This short linked to the Samantha Rain series manages to explain the origins of the first book without being too spoilery or an info-dumping thing. Sam is a human Warden linked to the Nox supernatural world. She also a lesbian and is crushing on her boss Lilith - This one is a short mystery and the puppy Shadow is adorable - the romance is slow burn and the characters and world building are great.
4.6 stars for The Case of the Puppy Academy an endearing intro short.
For an introduction to a new series, this was an adorable short story. I am a sucker for any story with critters and Shadow sounds like a perfect hellhound. Lilith and Samantha have a great working arrangement with obvious potential for more romantic possibilities. Looks like a cute series!
Arizona has dropped another Samantha Rain mystery and it’s a howler. We find Samantha taking her hellhound to school and winds up investigating a jewel theft. This one will have you rolling over and begging for more.

The Case Of The Puppy Academy: A Samantha Rain Mysteries Short Story by Arizona Tape is a fantastically amazing story to read. This is book number four in this fantastically amazing series that I have loved reading. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about mysteries and fantasies.

I really enjoyed meeting all of the quirky and “normal” characters. The mystery of course casts a suspicious pall on all of the characters, but I am a Buffy fan so I already am trained to look beyond the surface to the bad guy underneath.
Check out the rest of my review at Phoebe's Randoms. Link in bio.
This short story is filled with a lot of character development and world building. In a very brief period, we get to know Sam and Lilith and the Nix world. This sets the stage for the ensuing series.
I really enjoyed the story and had a great sense of closure as well as future potential.
A short book which was fun to read. Samantha newly made a Warden & given a hellhound to get train is at the Puppy Academy. Whilst trying her dog, Shadow, her boss turns up & Sam is instructed to find her missing clan ring. It turns out that quite a few things have gone missing & a chance remark at the local drinking hole leads Sam to find out who is stealing & where the stolen articles are.
I liked that there was an adorable hellhound, Shadow. Samantha was at the Puppy Academy to train Shadow. Lilleth is the leader of Samantha's clan. I didn't read the first book so some references were a bit obscure, but still enjoyable.
