You might be a black-and-white thinker if you think concretely, if emotions are difficult to grasp, if you struggle with compassion or empathy, if you are a perfectionist, and if you think everything is all or nothing, right or wrong, or good or bad. Or perhaps you love a black-and-white thinker. The Black-and-White Thinking Christian explores the characteristics of these types of thinkers through a Biblical lens. While they reflect God’s character as emphasized in the Old Testament, many tend to struggle with relationships as they perceive and prioritize situations differently. The Black-and-White Thinking Christian provides useful insights to help understand the strengths and weaknesses of black-and-white thinkers, and provides practical suggestions for Christ-like growth and change.
At the beginning and through the first portion of this short book Jacoby was very repetitive. The final 20 percent of the book made the entire book worth reading. Some powerful truths are shared as the summation takes place in the final chapter, "Becoming Like Christ."
Let me share the most poignant truth as told by Fred Jacoby, "Grace-giving Jesus values the person over performance, empathy over expectations, and spiritual needs over somatic wants. While still addressing the wrongs gently, Jesus prioritized people and relationships." page 135 The Black and White Thinking Christian, Fred Jacoby
Excellent book for anyone who has struggled with being a black and white thinker, has an "all or nothing" mindset and can be judgmental or critical of others. This book is convicting so I will stress that it won't be a help to those who are not teachable or don't see that their black and white thinking is a problem. It may be a help to those who have parents or spouses who are black and white thinkers. Fred Jacoby's book is an easy read, and has a biblical counseling perspective.
