Nicky Reed may have won the battle regarding baby shifters working as policemen, but he’s not so sure about the war. His mate and superior officer, Sam Black, is still overprotective with a capital O. As a result, Nicky sometimes finds himself repressing some of Tiny’s—his snow leopard cub other half’s—natural urges. Which leads to frustration on Nicky’s part.
With a new drug called Nemesis killing in record numbers, Alpha Unit One must find out who’s behind this horrible narcotic and get it off the streets—a tall enough order without press accusations that baby shifters are to blame for the team’s lack of success.
Their investigation into Nemesis leads Nicky and Sam and the rest of the team into unexpected waters. Will the stress rip the squad apart? The baby shifters may find themselves unable to perform the job they protecting the people of New York City. And Nicky may be in over his head—in more ways than one.
Chris T. Kat lives in the middle of Europe, together with her husband of many years and their two children. She stumbled upon the M/M genre by luck and was swiftly drawn into it. She divides her time between work, her family—which includes chasing after escaping horses and lugging around huge instruments such as a harp—and writing. She enjoys a variety of genres, such as mystery/suspense, paranormal, and romance. If there's any spare time, she happily reads for hours, listens to audiobooks, or crafts.
A consistent sequel that continues to expand on its original concept, so if you like shifter stories, if you like bonded mates all tied up with a law enforcement trope, then one should enjoy this.
Again, Alpha Unit One is faced with a new threat known as Nemesis, a drug that can have far reaching repercussions for both humans and shifters alike. Ever present is the extremist group that wants equal rights for both baby and small shifters by any means possible, and it’s no surprise to discover that they also have their hand in making and distributing the deadly substance.
Nicky, now infamous for being the first baby shifter allowed to serve on the force, is still trying to be accepted. Not only does he have a lot of insecurities but it doesn’t help that his team leader and mate Sam, also has a hard time reigning in his topmost instinct to keep Nicky safe from the job’s dangers. These two have some growing pains to go through, and they will have to quickly learn to trust each other if they’re to be successful as a team and as a couple.
Some caveats -This is still reminiscent of THIRDS. Really reminiscent. -This still has unexplained things that mess with my higher thinking skills and drive me batty (). -There’s lots of personalities and possessiveness and drama on this team of humans and shifters that’s a tad cheesy and OTT but hey, I could say that about the aforementioned other series that I happen to love.
However, I challenge you to not be affected by the adorable endearing extreme cuteness, for these shifters in their baby forms cannot be denied all the cooing and awwwing that will ensue.
Obviously, what this succeeds at for me is the baby shifter dynamic and though it continues to boggle, I can’t resist reading more about it. Toss in some suspense and action (though reminiscent of the first book), some smexy, and all the various big and small shifters that make up this world, and this was easy reading. So, if you’re in the mood for fluff regarding a trope that is both reliable but with a twist, this might catch your fancy!
Thank you to the publisher/author for a copy in exchange for a honest review
Nemesis is the second book in Chris T. Kat’s Alpha Unit One series and continues the story of Nicky and Sam and their team. While you could probably jump in here, the background on the role of baby shifters and small animal shifters, as well as the start of the relationship between the men, comes in the first book so starting there may be a help. Just to catch up new folks, the premise here is that in addition to shifters who move between human and adult animal form, there are also “baby shifters” who switch between human and baby shifter form. In Nicky’s case, he shifts into about a 3-month old snow leopard cub. In shifted form, Nicky takes on a more childlike demeanor, but as a human, he is fully adult. There is a lot of prejudice against baby shifters and a belief they need to be protected and not take on dangerous jobs. That issue is largely resolved in the first book, but we deal with the aftermath here.
What really drew me to this series is the unique world building with the baby shifters, as well as the discrimination that smaller animal shifters face. I think it is a creative take that I haven’t seen before and it adds an interesting spin to the typical paranormal.
This one just didn't work as well for me as the first. While I still really like the whole baby shifter dynamic and the struggle they have, and was happy that there was plenty of actual shifting, I found myself kind of bored with the rest of it as the storyline bounced around quite a bit.
Some of the characters became beyond annoying - and I'm really not sure how Alpha Unit One gets any actual work done with all the nonsense that goes on there. Yet, there were others who I would have liked to see more of.
There is still a continuing storyline around the big bads, but to me, the biggest hanging mystery is where do their clothes go when they shift?? Either everyone is spending a lot of time naked or clothes just magically immediately reappear when a shift ends.
Nemesis is the second book in the Alpha Unit One series by Chris T. Kat, starting right after the first book ends. Nicky and Sam are mated. But so is pretty much everyone in the unit. To each other. They are on the case of a new drug named Nemesis which is killing a lot of people, and making shifters lose control of their animal half, and attacking. While all this is going on Nicky is slowly getting used to everyone knowing about Tiny (his snow leopard cub half) and proving that despite being a baby shifter he is still a capable officer.
Nicky in his snow leopard cub form is the best. He reminds me so much of my kitten. He is adorable! I love the connection between him and Sam. They are an amazing couple and I want to read so much more about them.
As with book one, I will say it again: this series reminds me of another popular shifter series BUT it does have its own unique twists which sets it apart from said series. I really liked this book and with the cliff hanger obviously there will be another, which I am in a hurry for.

Rating: 4 stars I enjoyed this book in the Alpha Unit One series almost as much as I did the first one. I still love both Nicky and Sam and love their dynamic together. I love most of the characters in their unit, although how they get anything done with all the shenanigans going on in the workplace is beyond me. If you are one of those people who hate unprofessional professionals, then this book is not for you. Connor is the only one in the unit that really annoyed me throughout much of the book, although I did understand why he acted the way he did. I am still in love with the cute baby shifters and loved reading about their antics. Overall, this was a good book and I look forward to the next one in the series.
Nemesis (Alpha Unit One #2) by Chris T. Kat 3 stars M/M Shifter Romance Triggers: Drugs, attempted kidnapping, I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.
I did not read the previous book in this series. However, it never felt that I was truly missing things.
Nick is a baby shifter. He is also a newer member of the police squad. His mate is Sam. Sam is head of the division and despite their newer relationship, Nick feels fairly secure in his relationship. But, with the doubts and doubters making jokes and making fun do Nicky's baby shifter status, he doesn't want to bug his mate. However, when Sam realizes what his mate has been handling on his own, he's less than happy about it.
Nicky and another baby shifter have to figure out how to make sure that they are a valuable part of the team, all while navigating a new mating relationship and the bullies of their work place. There is a lot going on in this book, but if felt a little disjointed. You have a few different lines you're following and while they sometimes cross, it seemed like two different stories. I felt like the real story for me was about the baby shifters' relationship, not necessarily the drugs.
Loved it, I hadn't realized there was another book out. Nicky is so cute in cub form wanting just his milk and favorite red ball. There isn't really alot of crime solving in the book more about the relationshipps between the team and their partners. Hope book 3 comes soon.
Nicky and Sam are back and there is a new drug on the streets, Nemesis. As the team works to stop Nemesis from claiming more lives, Nicky finds himself rethinking his every move.
As the force adapts to baby shifters working among them, Nicky finds himself curbing some of his natural urges as a baby shifter. Over time, this seems to make Nicky unable to do the job he loves. With things coming to a head in the search for Nemesis’ creators, things take an unexpected turn and it is up to the team to deliver justice.
I loved this one. It has been a year since I read the first book in this series and I wasn’t even aware that there would be a sequel, but my glee at knowing that this book exists was way over the top. I just couldn’t wait to get my hands on it and the moment I started reading I found myself back in this world and it was like I never left. I loved how the story just picks up and you find yourself caught in the flow.
At the beginning of this book there was just so much to fix that I was overwhelmed. Nicky is hiding things from Sam and this fact had alarm bells ringing in my head and I realised that while things were better they were no where near settled. People on the force are still getting used to working alongside baby shifters and as the team comes under scrutiny for having baby shifters on board, Nicky finds himself second-guessing his ability to do his job.
The amazing thing about this book was that despite the fact that, there was so much up in the air at the starting, everything is handled exquisitely. Just seeing things work out so perfectly for Nicky and Sam made me so happy. The best thing was that their compromise was so flawless it didn’t even appear to be a compromise, it just felt like a part of being an amazing mate.
Nicky and Sam were so amazing in this book. I love these two so much. There entire team is so so good. Connor and Jesse are still working out things but I love where we leave them by the end of this book. I would really love for them to work things out between themselves. In fact, dare I say, I would love to have a book with them as the main characters. I really want to know more about these two. Roland is amazing, I love him, I love how good he is at supporting everyone in his team and seeing him with Nicky and Connor at the end was so heartwarming. He is so good. We get more of Annie who is as fearless as ever, Jake, Julie, Chris and Reese and I appreciated them all.
I can’t wait to delve more in this world and the ending makes me optimistic that we might just get another book in this series. I have said this before and I will say this again, I love the world the author has created for this series, it is so ingenious. If you liked the previous book in the series, this is one you definitely don’t want to miss.
Cover Art by Cate Ashwood. The snow leopard steals the show in a pretty magnificent cover. I like how the covers of the books in this series give off the same vibe despite being different.
I loved this book so much! Possibly more then the first one which is rare, yet somehow I sped through this one and it grabbed me straight away. I enjoyed getting to catch up with all of the members of Alpha unit one and seeing the development as a team, along with the various relationships in this one was beautiful. Sam and Nicky still have some struggles with baby shifters being looked down upon, also in stints wanting to protect them and figuring out their job roles yet they're adorable together.
I adore Tiny as always so cute, got to see a lot of the baby shifters in this one in a variety of settings and I loved it! Such a unique concept and I like how much it affects their personality in ways too, the instinctive actions from shift to human is fascinating in all of them. Roland is still one of my favourites and I just want to give him all of the hugs... His too good for this world and I enjoyed getting to see him slowly talk more about his past. Which really seemed to help Connor. I found lots of moments which are so soft and full of pure comfort, it's such an easy fast paced enjoyable read.
There is an interesting plot continuing from the last one which I enjoyed too and love how it was handled, added a lot of conflict and excitement to the story. It was great to see everyone on the job and how well they function as a team, not to mention seeing more of the other units and previous cast.
Overall I just had a lot of fun falling back into this world and seeing all these characters again which I adore so much. I would love to see more in this series, exploring the other relationships and cases as I feel there is so much more to learn here. Although it does have a lovely and perfect fitting end which was so cute! Xx
If the cheesy cover isn't bad enough, I couldn't possibly take an author who purposefully chooses a pseudonym [because come on, this has GOT to be a pseudonym] like Chris T. Kat ... that when saying it out loud, "reads" as Christy Cat!! Dude, Christy Cat?!!? Seriously?!!? This smells like the maturity level of a typical pre-pubescent teenager ... not a MATURE teenager, but a soul trapped in the body of a teenager with the mind of a 4 year old!! Again ... seriously?!!? We've seen it all! Next there'll be an author who chooses the pseudonym "Hugh Jardawn", just for shits and giggles, for Pete's sake!! I know the pseudonym is innocent enough and I'm sure the author thought it was cute [spoiler alert: it's not cute], but for a genre that works very hard at being taken seriously, it's really irritating when authors SEEMINGLY don't take the genre they contribute into, seriously!! This, for me, is enough to keep away from this author indefinitely!!!
NO offense to the author or her work (AT ALL), as I am not familiar with either!! This is just an assessment based on what I see and the negative impression it lends!! To each their own, and for THIS reader ... well, this and this author are just NOT for me!! Nope!!!
I enjoyed this book just as much as I enjoyed the first book in the series. This book is best read after the first book in the series, Alpha Unit One, New York.
Nicky and Sam are an established couple and work on the same special police unit: Alpha Unit One. The team dynamics are fun and entertaining, and I truly enjoyed all the characters. Nicky and Sam are super cute with each other, and even though they have some conflict, they manage to overcome it and become stronger for it.
Overall Rating: 4 Stars. This story is so cute and fluffy that it’s instantly became one of my favorites. I love this series so much and I really hope there’s a third book some day.
This story was just as cute as the first book in the series as we once again get to hang out with Nicky, Sam and the rest of Alpha Unit One while they continue to deal with the troublesome EFSS – Equality For Small Shifters. And while I felt somewhat sorry for the EFSS in book one, in this book they showed their more deranged side, and I was quite happy to cheer for their downfall.
This book begins with Sam and Nicky already firmly in mated territory and I think what I liked most about this story was the way the author cemented their relationship rather than messing them around to get another book out of their issues. Of course it’s not all smooth sailing, but Nicky and Sam are solid and so in love it’s ridiculously cute.
The reason I didn’t rate this book higher is that it kinda felt like a filler story that should come between two books. Like it should be 1.5 in the series instead of 2, because I really felt like the plot didn’t go anywhere. It was enjoyable, don’t get me wrong, but while they catch the bad guys, it’s the same bad guys from book one, and there are still more of them out there. And while some of the secondary characters might have moved into a slightly more committed relationship, in general all of the relationships in the series also remain as they were. There was no notable advancement to the over arching storyline.
But, it’s still a worthwhile read if you’ve started this series, and I definitely recommend that you read the books in the correct order. The interesting twist the author added by including the “baby shifters” gives the Alpha Unit One series that something it needs to stand out from the crowd of shifter stories. As I said in my review of the first book, the cuteness factor is ridiculous, especially when Nicky gets anywhere near a carton of milk, and Tiny’s wants take over.
I like this series so far. It has been a good first two books. This is not your typical shifter series. This series includes what is considered baby shifters.... in other words instead of a full grown shifter like their human counterpart, whenthey do shift they shift into a baby shifter. There is a huge discrimination against a baby shifters in this series. So that and the drug that is out on the streets affecting those who take it is what this series is primarily about.
Nicky is what is considered a baby shifter. Even though he tried to hide this side of him from other people on the police forces, he was found out about. At first there was issues with him being a baby shifter because he should not be aloud on the force but his mate is on the force as well.
Sam is the head over he Alpha Unit and he is also Nicky’s fated mate. It is not always easy having a mate that is a baby shifter. Sam worries constantly about Nicky and Nicky's Baby shifter, Timy. But he will not be one of those people that puts Nicky in a box because he is a baby shifter. So h just tries to protect Nicky and Tiny the best that he can.
When Nemesis keeps making appearances on the street, Alpha Team One starts investigating and they come up with some serious issues. Not only I see the drug killing those who take it but the lab has come back and found some suspicious ingredients added in with the drug as well.
One one new lead turns into a dangerous situation, everyone is going to have to work together to get out of it unharmed and alive. What will happen when Sam realizes that Nicky is in much more serious danger then the rest of them? Will he be able to get to him in time?
This was a good read. I really enjoyed this book and I am really enjoying this series. Just like other the last book, I truly look forward to the next book once it comes out. This book is full of love, danger, action, and a lot of options. You will definitely find yourself laughing at some of the antics that goes on. Good read!!
Was given this galley copy for free for an open and honest review
These are brain candy books for me, something I turn to when I need to escape from everything for a while, where I don’t have to think, and I can just curl up and enjoy. I do recommend you read the first book as it sets the foundation for Nemesis.
I believe I noted in my review of Alpha Unit One, I was attracted to the variety of shifters. It’s not limited to our wolves and cats, but includes small critters, birds, and baby shifters. What a fun concept that when someone shifts, they transform into the baby version of their animal, where even as an human adult they carry the traits of a immature critter.
Because this is a review, and even though these are brain candy books for me, I have a couple of items that detracted. This first was one I noted in book one as well, Nick’s character lost the adult aspect of a grown human man and much of the book was spent behaving/talking like a cub. Cute for a while, but I could have used some adulting sans pouting.
The characters hit one of my quirks – a grown man pulling another grown man into their lap (this would bother me if were a woman as well). You pull a small child into your lap, not an adult. And anatomically, it’s just awkward.
Lots of time spent as cubs in this book, not just Nick but his teammate as well. There is some light angst as Nick is still adjusting to being mated, questions of self-worth which bring up plenty of self-doubt. Overall, the book rolls along at a quick pace and can be easily devoured in a lazy, uninterrupted afternoon.
Review is cross posted at Gay Book Reviews A copy of the book was provided by the author and publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
I remember when I finished book one in this series and I was hoping the author was going to continue this world, make it into a series, and have it resume to focus on Sam and Nicky. As much as I adored the worldbuilding and all of the characters that I met in ‘Alpha Unit One: New York’, I didn’t feel as if I really knew Sam and Nicky as well as I would’ve liked. So imagine my glee when I discovered the author was continuing the world and creating a series from it. I was so excited to read more about these guys, their team, and of course, Tiny, Nicky’s name for the baby shifter snow leopard cub he shifts into. (Hint: he might just be the most adorable thing I’ve ever read!)
Alpha Unit One handles the drug problems in New York City and the newest craze is Nemesis. Nemesis is responsible for so many deaths and the team is under serious pressure to do something about it. Nemesis is comprised of an enhancement gene, a whole lot of amphetamines, and hippo blood, specifically female hippo blood. The humans who are taking this drug are certainly feeling the effects of being a shifter – enhanced strength – but they’re dying in droves mostly from heart attacks. Sam and his team are on a deadline to figure out who’s behind this and the grumblings coming from the populace that the two team members who are baby shifters (Nicky and Connor) are inhibiting the team’s ability to do its job, isn’t helping matters at all.
I can’t explain how happy I was when I saw this new release out. I wasn’t waiting for a new installment in the Alpha Unit One series and I was over the moon. I’m a big fan of the author, I often come back to her titles when I seek comfort in my readings. This series is no exception.
This time Nicky and Sam and their whole team are busy trying to catch who is behind a new drug that’s killing people on the streets and they will have to face some dangerous moments. While they are investigating, I was able to follow my adorable couple around and I discovered they are still deep in love: Sam is still too overprotective of his mate, sure he’s making progresses, he’s trying really hard to treat Nicky as one of his teammates, but it’s not easy to ignore their connection. And then there’s Nicky, who is fighting to gain the respect he deserves although some people seems to be too stupid to see beyond his baby shifter.
As in the first book, Nemesis was another great success to me, quick and easy to read, the focus remains on the main couple, but there are some amazing second characters too, I truly hope the author will write their own stories in the future. Alpha Unit One is a light paranormal series, not once shallow, but full of action, friendship and loyalty. Plus be ready for a lot of cuteness, Nicky as a snow leopard cub is hard to resist.
I like the unique premise of baby shifters and their plight to be treated as capable human beings instead of pretty ornaments. Though sometimes they can't help themselves to be playful when their animal takes over. There were a few disjointed themes and an odd behavior from Nick who was a very capable detective until outed as baby shifter and some miscommunications toward Sam but overall it was a very good story that I've enjoyed. I always like Chris T. Kat's writing and she did not disappoint here. Looking forward to the next in series.
Yet another good one for the baby shifters. Such a unique concept that I've seen no one else touch on or even bother to explore, it takes adorable to new heights. I was so excited to get my hands on this, i preordered it the moment i caught wind of it! I have a feeling it will become one of my treasured books, along with the original Alpha Unit 1: New York. Nikki is just far too cute to be forgotten.
The first book had a strange cute charm. This one went beyond strange and tripped into creepy.
The unit is working on a major drug case but little work is actually accomplished. It is Keystone Cops with fur. Nicky when in human form spends too much time pouting and reacting like a toddler. This is just too creepy when Sam is also in human form and presents as an adult.
I like baby shifters. The usual "adult" shifter books get boring after a while. It is really nice to get a brake and read about these cute shifters. It is a unique series.
I would love to read this book. But it was taken off Amazon . Can anyone tell me where I can get it. I had to wait to buy it,and when I could it was gone.
