Elephants are great at many things…playing hide-and-seek is not one of them. The Elephant Hobby and Sport League is here to help all those frustrated, always "found" elephants out there with The Elephants' Guide to Hide-and-Seek . This handy guide offers sympathy, support, and superior hiding solutions to elephants who long to overcome their size disadvantage when playing hide-and-seek. A hilarious tongue-in-cheek book perfect for elephants and their best human pals. Readers of Have You Seen Elephant? will love this silly elephant game of hide and seek, and all its handy tips and tricks for hiding!
This is a cute book aimed at elephants (because... why not?) that helps them overcome their disadvantages at playing hide-and-seek.
It reminded me a little of David Barrow's Have You Seen Elephant?, which also features a game of hide-and-seek between a pachyderm and a child. In this case, though, the story is framed as more of a non-fiction guidebook for elephants. It's written in the second person point of view. The pictures are cute, and the book highlights all the ways that elephants might be able to make a game of hide-and-seek work for them.
If you're a big fan of elephants, you'll probably want to check out this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Jabberwocky for providing a digital ARC.
5 star CUTENESS! We love elephants!!! When I saw the cover of this I had to download it. My students were tickled with the fun and laughter we experienced while reading this one over an over. Already a class favorite. I will pick up a classroom copy when it hits stores in April. Loved all the pictures. Visually just what I like for young kids.
Many thanks to NG and the publisher for a digital copy to review. Highly recommended!
Oh my goodness! The light hearted joy contained in this book. Not only does Hayes bring a memorable voice to this hilarious hide and seek but she brings out the warmth of not only wanting to be a part of things, but also discovering (and delighting in) your own role to play. The illustrations bring so much fun humor to this hide and seek romp. A must read before you play your own game of hide and seek!
Such an adorable story with sweet illustrations! What kid wouldn't love to play hide and seek with an elephant? But elephants may not be so great at hiding in all the usual spots. That's why they need a Guide to give them tips. My kids loved the funny ways that the elephant had to think of new places to hide (like pretending to be furniture). And what a sweet way to end the story - with being found.
I am so relieved that this wasn't another rhyming book. Instead, I could hear the narrator in my head. I had to Google search the voice and found Ed Herilhy. That guy. I heard the book read by Ed Herilhy. I wonder who kids would hear?
A bright, droll and vaguely pointless read for the very young, dressed up as a guide to help elephants be a bit more successful when hiding in games of hide and seek. There's no moral, there's no real concession to a young reader, with phrases like 'patented guidelines' and words like 'camouflage' (oh, and 'pachyderm'), it's just the concept of an elephant playing the game with kids used as much as possible til all the humour has been wrung out of it. Perfectly pleasant to be read once, I doubt it'll get much repeat traffic.
The main character in this book tends to be the elephant in the room when it comes to hide-and-seek. He finds himself reading a copy of The Elephants' Guide to Hide-and-Seek, and learns a lot of great tips, including but not limited to: disguising as furniture, foliage, and piles of laundry! Very cute and fun, perfect for a laugh-- and you might learn some good hide-and-seek tips yourself!
Poor elephant, he is terrible at hide-and-seek! However, this guide book is here to help. It gives you tips on how to hide better and how not to even try to hide. It will either make you a better hider, or you will just be "it"! Silly and Fun! #Edelweiss
Elephant struggles to play hide and seek - he's always found first. Fortunately, the Elephant Hobby and Sports League is there to help. Elephant learns how to find more creative hiding locations and gets to be part of the fun. Clever illustrations.
The kids all love elephant and want him to join them in a game of hide-and-seek. Elephant reluctantly accepts their offer because he loves the kids and can't bear to disappoint them even though he knows he can't find a decent hiding spot when your the size of?... an elephant!!!!
He is found again and again by his kid friends as he struggles to find the perfect hiding spot. It seems hopeless to do so. Whatever shall he do? He starts reading a copy of "The Guide to Hide-and-Seek" to discover hiding spaces that will let him succeed in becoming invisible to the kids that are hunting him down and then happily shouting at at the top of their lungs..."FOUND YOU!" He's embarrassed although it's not his fault at all.
The book instructs him to blend in and disguise himself as a piece of furniture, an elephant-sized bed, to seek out large bathtubs and cloister himself under piles of laundry, just to name a few. He's to think camouflage. Maybe he should just volunteer to be "it" and not hide at all, that may solve the problem.
This fun, silly story will have kids giggling and I'm sure they will fall in love with the sweet, big-hearted elephant who adores kids and will do anything he can to spend quality time with them and make them happy. The illustrations are very well done. Each character is adorable, animated and expressive. I highly recommend this book.
The Elephants' Guide to Hide-and-Seek, written by Kjersten Hayes and illustrated by Gladys Jose, is currently scheduled for release on April 1 2020. Elephants are great at many things...playing hide-and-seek is not one of them. But The Elephant Hobby and Sport League is here to help all those frustrated, always "found" elephants out there with The Elephants' Guide to Hide-and-Seek. This handy guide offers sympathy, support and superior hiding solutions to elephants who long to overcome their size disadvantage when playing hide-and-seek.
The Elephants' Guide to Hide-and-Seek is a fun and sweet story. I found the illustrations to be charming and I really enjoyed the style. The text and illustrations worked well together to tell the story, and managed to be encouraging while still including a good amount of humor- like an elephant trying to hide under the covers. I think it offers readers a good laugh, along with ideas (like volunteering to be it) that can make a game that usually offers frustration more fun. I really like that it also points out that playing the game can be fun because of who you are playing with, not just because of how well you play.
The Elephants’ Guide to Hide-and-Seek is such a sweet book. Children will love the humor on every page and the visual of an elephant trying to hide in the most unlikely places. I can imagine story-time with children laughing and guessing where Elephant might hide next. Adults will enjoy the humor, too; I loved the line about the guidebook being written by the “Elephant Hobby and Sport League.” While the tone of the book is playful and whimsical, it also addresses children’s real worries about being left out. This book will open up powerful discussions between parents, teachers, and children about being inclusive and supportive (as the children in this book are towards the elephant), and also about strategies for how to participate in something that might be harder or more frustrating for a particular child. This important theme of working with what you have and finding unique ways to be part of a group is presented in such an uplifting, fun way for children!
The Elephant's Guide to Hide-And-Seek by Kjersten Hayes and illustrated by Gladys Jose is an engaging picture story book that invites kids to join the main character in a a fun game. He is a relatable character that is attempting to become a better hide-and-seek player. Clearly, he has a tough time as an elephant, but he keeps trying with hopes to fit in. This story works perfectly with the illustrations and words alike to create a tale that will keep children laughing. I believe this would be a great book to share with kids that winning is not always the point of a game--but playing with people that make you happy is. The colorful artwork done by Jose creates a vivid image of the diversity of each character and really aids the story's theme. This would be a great book for child in kindergarten that are just entering a new part of life with unfamiliar people and things that they have never encountered before.
This silly story is geared toward children ages 4 to 8. I think that it will appeal most to the younger listeners.
Elephant enjoys having human children as friends. When they want to play hide and seek, of course Elephant agrees. Naturally it is not the best game for someone of his size.
To the rescue come tips from the Elephant Hobby and Sport League purporting to help elephants to succeed at Hide and Seek. This advice leads to adorable and funny illustrations that kids should love.
There is a sweet message of inclusiveness underlying this story. Mostly, though, it is meant to be fun.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this read in exchange for an honest review.
This points out how elephants can camouflage themselves instead of trying to hide behind things that are too small. Also points out challenges during hiding -- tempting peanuts, small cars that are tripping hazards, etc.
The book is very silly and humorous and the illustrations add to that.
What a sweet (and laugh-out-loud) "guide" to help elephants overcome the challenge of being spotted in hide-and-seek. Told in second person by debut author Kjersten Hayes, the text reads like a tongue-in-cheek manual from the Elephant Hobby and Sport League for the elephant audience, sprinkling in words like "pachyderm" and "patented." Kids will be inspired to play to their strengths and think creatively to solve problems, just as the elephants are encouraged to do. The heartwarming ending hits all the right notes, and Gladys Jose Fabii's energetic illustrations will make you want to start your own game of hide-and-seek. Highly recommended for the picture-book audience!
There is much humor (mostly visual) in this engagingly appealing story of a group of diverse human kids who have an elephant among them. They are welcoming and accepting, but seem to have been narrowed in their perceptions of the friend by their assumptions of what an elephant would want to do or is capable of doing. As such, it becomes a bit of an easy-to-enjoy analogy for kids to broaden their thinking and discover the fun potential f each and every friend among themselves. The art is colorful and coy, so kids will dive into finding details and even in imagining additional options for the friend group to consider.
This is such a sweet and humorous book, perfect for entertaining young readers who love hide and seek. The upbeat mood is artfully delivered by the warm text, which shows Elephant various ways and places to hide. What I love about this book is how Elephant and all the characters have such big hearts and in the end, it’s not about knowing how to play hide and seek, but how to have fun with dear friends. It has heart, humor and clever word play all wrapped together in a lively tale of a great friendship.
My Review: I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley, the following is my honest opinion and review. I am always on the look out for new great Children's books and this one is definitely up there. It reads as if it is how to or tips for elephants playing hide and seek with kids but is clearly a nod at parents to help spark play again. I loved the illustration style of this book, it is bold and bright, young kids will love that part of the story. It is also silly which will have kids giggling away. I am sure this one will become a favorite!
At one time or another every kid struggles to play the group game of choice. But when you’re an elephant and the game is hide-and-seek, the struggle is enormous!
This hilarious how-to guide for elephants encourages pachyderms and kids alike to embrace their strengths and turn those weaknesses into assets! A playful guide for elephants who need to work with what they’ve got – and they’ve got a lot!
When it comes to hide-and-seek, every elephant needs some hiding tips, right? Well, other pachyderms, who’ve been there before have a few pointers to share. This tongue-in-cheek “how to” book by Kjersten Hayes is peppered with wordplay and accompanied by Gladys Jose-Fabii’s energetic and colorful illustrations. At the end of the day, the takeaway of this lively romp is the joy of playing -- not necessarily winning-- especially if you’re destined to ALWAYS be found.
Playing hide-and-seek can be extremely frustrating for a pachyderm, but fear no more, Elephants’ Guide to Hide and Seek is here to help! Kids will have a blast reading it’s tips and tricks, and ultimately learning to stay to true to themselves and that finding friendship is the best part of it all. Gladys Jose’s energetic and bright art perfectly complements the text. Children will beg to read this funny and heartwarming picture book over and over again!
From the first sweet words, “The game begins, dear elephant. But let us guess….you are the only pachyderm playing,” this is truly a fun and endearing story. But, as you might imagine, poor dear elephant struggles at the game. Until he finds a guide that guarantees hide-and-seek success! How to blend in, hiding places to consider, what to avoid and perhaps the best advice of all… With bright and playful illustrations, The Elephants' Guide to Hide-And-Seek is sure to enchant young readers.
In this book we see how elephant tries to join in hide and seek unsuccessfully and successfully with full colour pages in mostly primary colours children will love this picture book.
A short sweet story that'll win kids hearts and infinite their imagination to dream they can play with their favourite animals!
Many thanks to the publishers for allowing me to review this book for them!
This is that rare read aloud that's a balance of rollicking good fun but also sweet, and the nameless, bespectacled, and perpetually worried elephant is one of my new favorite characters. This is a book that would work equally well as an at-home lapsit or in a classroom, and it says some great things about friendship without imparting a heavy-handed lesson. The wordplay and colorful illustrations (did I mention a bespectacled elephant?) make this book a hit.
Kids will love the playful visual humor in this sweet story of an elephant attempting to play a game he’s not-so-good at with his human friends. While some of the hiding places where Elephant finds himself are downright funny, in the end the story’s humor conveys a gentle message about learning to play along and about the fun of being with true friends no matter what the activity. Lively illustrations in bright colors contribute to the book’s upbeat, energetic feel.
Right when I finished this book I said out loud "well that was adorable." And it is! Owning who you are and finding ways to make it work in the world! Great book for a story time (with a hide and seek activity afterwards), a Saturday afternoon read (with activities to keep the kids busy afterwards). I don't know if I recommend this one for a nighttime read, more of a "let's get the wiggles out" read.
This book is so much fun to read! The elephant is such a relatable character for kids who are learning how to play hide-and-seek and are always found immediately. My five-year-old son thought the illustrations of the elephant’s hiding places were absolutely hilarious. And once the elephant learned to hide, he kept saying, “He’s camouflaged!” But this book isn’t just a funny book with great illustrations. It has a lot of heart too, including an ending that makes you say, “Awww, how sweet!”
Kids will enjoy spotting Elephant’s ridiculous hiding spots in this cute book. It’s a fun read, where the kid can be in on the joke. I also enjoyed that all of the characters are genuinely affectionate throughout, illustrating a good-hearted game of Hide-and-Seek with friends. Overall, a playful story with sweet illustrations.
I love a book that teaches a great lesson in a way that is both relatable and not preachy. Add in loads of humor and you’ve got a real winner which is what this book is! Like many kids, elephant has a desire to play the game, but he’s just no good at it. By trying different strategies and showing resiliency, elephant proves that everyone can be a winner. A great read for all ages!
