Diane Capri is back with her latest novel in this series that has hints of the Lee Child popular collection. While Jack Reacher remains at large and one step ahead of the FBI, there are other issues that take precedence this time around. When Treasury Agent John Lawton is kidnapped as he leaves a lunch meeting with an accountant in New Mexico, worry races up the chain of command. FBI Special Agent Kim Otto is alerted to matters and sent down to investigate and assist, as there are some mean players in the vicinity. It’s suspected that drug cartel leader, Pinto Vigo, is behind the kidnapping, as Lawton is said to have been meeting with a mole within the cartel. Otto’s arrival in New Mexico is not entirely business related, as she and Lawton have a loose relationship that has been simmering for the past while. Is she being drawn to help because of the victim, or is this all business? Liaising with her former partner, Otto discovers that Lawton is likely being held amongst a commune of ‘preppers’, those who are ready for an end of days or the need to secede, should the situation arise. Learning a little more about the locals and Vigo’s way of life, Otto is joined by a few other federal agents, as they seek to rescue Lawton before capturing Pinto Vigo once and for all. Reacher is surely around, but Otto’s mission is focused elsewhere for the time being. A great addition to the series, which usually packs a punch. Recommended to those who like crime thrillers that keep on spinning, as well as the reader who has come to enjoy this series.
I eagerly await every time I see that Capri has been working to release a new Hunt for Reacher tale, as they tend to be well-crafted novels. This was no exception, though there was less of a Reacher feel and more one of action adventure in the plot. With Special Agent Kim Otto working alone, the tale took on more of a solitary spin, though the action did not dissipate throughout. Otto’s backstory is not covered herein, though the eleven previous novels should have done much of that. Rather, the reader is able to see what makes Otto leap up and take notice, both with her Lawton connection and ability to discover nuances in the larger mission. Never one to shy away from controversy, Otto pushes forward to help locate the federal agent, as well as bring down a drug cartel. Others appear throughout the book, complementing Otto or the larger plot effectively. Capri fashions these characters to keep the reader interested and pushes the narrative forward with their presence. The story itself was quite easy to digest, working in the Southwest part of the country. Offering up some insight into the world of ‘preppers’ and how they fit into the larger American fabric, Capri entertains and educates in equal measure. While not the sharpest of the series novels, this one fits nicely into the mix, leavin fans eager to see how and when Reacher might appear again. Some will bemoan that this is not ‘pure’ Reacher, though the series is done with the blessing (and encouragement) of Lee Child, who is in regular contact with Diane Capri. The two series complement one another nicely and I will keep reading as long as the stories remain crisp and worth my time.
Kudos, Madam Capri, for another great piece, even if dear old Jack was not a central topic.
Last year I read 42 stories featuring Jack Reacher. First I read the 29 Jack Reacher Novels and short stories by Lee Child. And then Ai read all the books in this series. This is the ninth novel in the Hunt for Reacher Series, and the twelfth story featuring Otto and Gaspar. The source book for this volume was Lee Child’s Die Trying. In that one Reacher was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and could not leave a woman behind. In this one someone else is in the wrong place at the wrong time, and it has serious consequences for agent Otto.
I enjoyed :
Kim L. Otto Charles Cooper Lamont Finlay Carlos Gaspar John Lawton Michael Flint Holly Johnson Pinto Vigo Mason O’Hare Jake Reacher
and Jack Reacher
I enjoyed Die Trying but it is not one of my favourite Reacher novels. And this is not my favourite Hunt For Reacher novels either. In fact, for the first time in this series I put this book down twice and read other books before coming back to it. I did read it over a few days, but it felt strained. Maybe part of it is that Gaspar is retired and Otta is working on her own. Or maybe the abduction of Lawton. Otto is out on her own in this story in more ways than one. She is almost killed during a routine questioning of people at a place of interest. She realizes she needs backup and Reacher owes her one and she reaches out. But She never know if or when he will show up.
The story involves preppers who just want to get by. A drug lord with grand plans. Balloning, helicopters, and a daring rescue before a morning raid by authorities.
The story is a good continuation of Die Trying but in my opinion it is not on the same level of the others in the series. But still a good read. After the other 11 stories in the series my expectations are very high. If you are a fan of the series it is a must read. If you have not read any of them, start at the beginning!
Read the review on my blog Book Reviews and More and reviews of other books by Diane Capri. As well as reviews of all the Jack Reacher Novels by Lee Child.
With every new Search for Reacher installment, Diane Capri never fails me. I keep waiting for the next installment even as I finish the current one.
Prepper Jack is, in my opinion, the best of Capri’s Search for Reacher series. And she has done masterful work with all of them, so do not be held back from reading them all. In this tidy tale Kim Otto, for all intents and purposes, is on her own. Carlos Gaspar, her Number 2, has retired from the FBI, The Boss (Charles Cooper) has not seen fit to assign a new Number 2 from within the FBI…or tap into his resources and contacts from other three-letter agencies to help her track down her on-and-off “boyfriend” from the Treasury department. And Kim is, bluntly, pissed.
Diane C. uses a Reacher novel as the basis for each of the Search for Reacher episodes; this one is DIE TRYING which is the second published Reacher novel after KILLING FLOOR. Kim, through the good offices of one of the pivotal characters of both KILLING FLOOR and the entire Search for Reacher series, Lamont Findley, is introduced to Holly Johnson, whom Reacher saves (along with a fair number of other folks) from a militia/prepper group holed up in the Northern Rockies. Holly Johnson opens another perspective on Reacher…one that shows just, in many respects, that being JUST THIS SIDE of legal ain’t a whole lot different than being JUST THAT SIDE of legal.
Capri has a knack for holding true to not just the characters she creates, Diane has maintained not just the spirit, but the letter of the Childs’ characters as well. There are other authors who have done Reacher extensions with permission, I’ve read a few and dropped them…there was a total disconnect between Childs’ Reacher-verse and theirs. Capri maintains the character flow. Her handling of the Lamont Findley character is precise and crisp. He was a down and out Boston cop with an Ivy League Ph.D. on his way back up in KILLING FLOOR and Capri has captured the Boston Brahmin resurgence with elan and—glee.
As a total aside…there is another five-foot investigator that I would love to see teamed with Kim Otto. In some ways, if you describe Kim Otto, you also describe Kate Shugat. OMG, what those two could do. Except Kate lives in The Park in Alaska and we all know how Kim feels about the cold…
Go, buy Prepper Jack—I think I have teased you enough. I promised I would never give spoilers and I won’t…okay—one…Diane has woven a seminal character from one of her other series in Prepper Jack. He adds to the fun and mayhem.
Diane Capri’s latest thriller, Prepper Jack uses Lee Child’s Die Trying as her source book and both books begin with a kidnapping of an FBI Special Agent and a citizen.
Special Agent Kim Otto is unaware that her on again/off again special friend with benefits, IRS Special Agent Walter Lawton, is the victim of a kidnapping.
A plain manila envelope is delivered to Kim Otto’ apartment in the same manner as her FBI boss has done many times but this phone is different. It’s not her boss but Lamont Finlay who a Special Assistant to the President of the United States and has been a constant source of frustration and assistance as Otto and her former partner Carlos Gaspar have tried to find background information on Jack Reacher for reasons that are unclear.
Finlay now becomes her “boss” as he gives Otto access to another FBI Special Agent, Holly Johnson, who was kidnapped many years ago in DC and Reacher was caught up in the event quite by accident. Now Johnson is willing to talk to Otto about Reacher at a level that is unusual. It provides Otto with new and confusing information.
Finlay flies Otto to Glen Haven, New Mexico where there is a group of “Preppers” living in a commune. Turns out there’s lots of bad stuff going on and pretty soon Otto realizes she needs a partner but one she can trust and has special skills. Her buddy Gaspar hooks her up with Michael Flint (you might recognize him as the star of Capri’s Heir Hunter series. It only gets better as Otto sends a message to Reacher to come help her save some of these Preppers since Reacher knows two of them.
Okay, the rest is up to you. It’s fast, violent and messy and Reacher does show up but Otto never sees him. If you like watching characters in your books mature, you will absolutely enjoy Otto’s changing attitude. You’ll also learn why Lamont and Cooper want to find Reacher and that’s quite a story in itself. Also you’ll learn who a “Prepper” is or maybe you already know. Could be an age thing.
I have a full schedule nearly all week, every week. So, when I read a review that says, "I was up all night, couldn't put it down," I always think, "Where do these people get the time?" Now, I know. Some books become a compulsion. It's hard to stop reading them. Everything gets shove aside so you can continue on to the next page.
"Prepper Jack" is like that, the classic page-turner. I'm not sure how Diane does this but each volume gives us a bit more insight into her well-drawn characters while maintaining a high degree of suspense and continuity.
In this outing, Agent Kim Otto, on a highly secret assignment to hunt down Jack Reacher, finds herself without a partner, trying to find John Lawton, an IRS agent Kim may or may not have an emotionnal bond to, she's still trying to figure it out. Her search for Lawton, even while she's still trying to track down Reacher, takes her to an off-the-grid prepper community that is having world-shattering problems of their own.
The action starts with page one and doesn't let up. Capris' plots are tightly drawn. Her characters are well-fleshed out, their situations plausible. She has researched the weapons her characters use, the vehicles they drive and the world they live in. You know you have a keeper-author when she gives a description of how a hot air balloon works! Hot air balloon?? How can that be exciting? "Prepper Jack" weaves it into the storyline in an incredibly engaging way.
I really like how each of Diane's "Hunt for Reacher" books stand well on its own. You can read this one without having read the others. You can enjoy it even if you're not familiar with Lee Child's Jack Reacher series. If you do, though, I guarantee you'll go back and read the rest. I'm already looking forward to the next installment of the ever-expanding Reacherverse!
I was provided with a prepublication copy of "Prepper Jack" for my objective review.
Prepper Jack:(The Hunt For Jack Reacher Series Book 12) - a review by Rosemary Kenny
*slight spoilers* Can it be true? Are we finally going to meet the infamous Jack Reacher? I could hardly stand the intense wave of excitement that came crashing through my mind, at the thought that Queen of Suspense Thrillers Diane Capri might finally make good on her implied promise, to one day let Lee Child's urban myth-like hero appear for all to behold in stunned amazement and to be assured he's not just a figment of a great author's imaginative pairing with Reacher's creator. In Prepper Jack, Book #12 in Diane Capri's wonderful homage series,The Hunt For Reacher, Agent Kim Otto has a dilemma, as so often in the past. Her bosses can no longer be fully trusted, while her only means of reaching out,(to the 'invisible walking man' who is Jack Reacher) is via his nephew,Jason, whose Uncle Jack's response, if any, may come too late to repel the terrorist group, that has brought evil and danger to those who've welcomed them into their suburban homestead. What happens to Otto during events at Glen Haven? Why does Otto's ex-partner at the CIA sent another Agent in his place? Do they work well together?Who are Vigo and Maria? How is a hot air-balloon trip different this time? When does Otto learn of Reacher's presence - and does she finally see him at last? The action proceeds at break-neck speed and you'll have to be sure to keep an oxygen tank at the ready, as the sizzling action in Prepper Jack will take your breath away at times. Don't miss this creme de la creme of the Hunt For Reacher series, by the amazing Diane Capri at any cost. It's a 5-star +++ winner, that's guaranteed to satisfy your curiosity, generate chills down your spine and completely win you over yet again, to fall in love with Prepper Jack in all his wonderful variations ...get it NOW!!
I am never disappointed when I ready these fantastic novels. It’s a testament to the talent of this author that she can weave her completely different story around one of Lee Child’s Reacher books and not infringe on any of the Reacher plot or time lines or character development. These stories are so intricate. I have read all of the Reacher books, and I am always amazed how Reacher characters are interwoven with this author’s characters without missing a beat. As always, Reach is just out of reach, but you know this of course before you even begin. FBI Agent Otto is now working alone since her partner Gaspar is retired, but we are now adding another important character, Agent Otto’s “almost” boyfriend, John Lawton, an IRS agent. Bukt how important is he or will be become? As always, Agent Otto is fighting lots of bad guys, bureaucratic red tape, incomplete direction from the top (the “boss”), but always making new connections. She is constantly pushed in the direction of her super-secret mission of “finding” Jack Reacher. All of these stories are highly recommended and I am looking forward to the next adventure in the “hunt.”
Another fun Reacher read! Otto's latest adventure is quick and tense as she hunts not only for a missing partner, but also...wait, was that Reacher over there?...
**Noted below: There were some editing errors in the e-edition.**
1. Chapter 13 - paragraphs 5 and 6 should be switched around. 5 mentions Otto hurries to get dressed, while 6 says "as she showered".
2. Chapter 31 - plural form needs used for "know". After offering to get coffee, and Otto saying she likes it "hot and black", he replies, "Perfect. I like a low-maintenance woman who know what she wants." Instead of "knows".
3. Chapter 31 - later in the chapter, when discussing Mason O'Hare, Otto says he is "also missing." Then once they plan to go to Glen Haven, Otto says they need to start looking for O'Hare, again mentioning he disappeared, but then shortly after said "O'Hare should be home in bed at this hour...Should be easy to surprise him." (But he is missing...)
4. Chapter 38 - towards end Vigo and Maria are talking and Maria says, "I'll stay behind...with Hector and Maria", rather than saying "with Hector and Elena".
Ooo...this was another well-written, fast-action thrill.
Capri grabbed our attention with the docile O'Hara, but then pulled in the dapper Lawton, pulling Otto (and Finley) as well as Gaspar and his resources (who does approve of Flint?!) to thwart another bad guy set out to do bad things.
Ironic, isn't it, that Otto (and Cooper and Gaspar) believe Reacher to be an out-of-control ex-military asset, however, find themselves in thee very same situations and taking the same actions, all while having the spite (but is it diminishing the more Cooper does his shady shit?) they hold against Reacher?
Hmmm...
Otto is more and more hiding her credentials, using them when convenient, to take on matters that any good human (with the right resources) would do.
Where DID Flint get that whirly-bird? How DOES Finley have assets in place to equip Otto with what she needs, in such short windows?
This series is just amazing. A Reacher fan is always looking for something that reminds us of him because, come on, it’s Jack Reacher! Well, that’s exactly what I found in Capri’s series. Not only is her writing style top notch, her ability to capture and expand on that unique Reacher feel is astounding. I also have to say.. Kim Otto is hands down my new favorite lit character (after Jack of course). I can’t help but wonder/hope Diane and Lee collaborate on a story where they are both present in the whole book and we can see both of their perspectives throughout!
This Diane Capri addition to her Hunt for Reacher series is just as entertaining as the other eleven. It is a typical mix of familiar characters and amazing new situations that make it impossible to put the story down...just what I expect and look for in her stories. She definitely accomplished that with this new adventure. Glad to see Gaspar is still involved and the 'bosses' are still making Otto's life difficult. Thanks for the newest installment and the Reacher involvement. Can't wait for the next one.
A LOT of excitement takes place in the four days that the book spans. And I was so surprised to see another familiar face, Michael Flint from the Heir Hunter series. Prepper Jack is the 12th book in the Hunt for Reacher series…each playing off of a Lee Child Jack Reacher book. It's not a necessity that you read the Lee Child book...but if you're here, reading any book in Diane Capri's Hunt for Reacher series, I'm sure that you, being a Reacher fan, have probably read all of Child's Reacher books, too. Quoting Child, "Make some coffee. You'll read all night!"
Kim Otto is off again, but strangely enough she is sent by Findley instead of the boss. John Lawton who Kim has been dating is missing after going to see an informant. She’s sent to an remote area where a small group of preppers live. I’m happy that although retired, Gaspar is still helping her behind the scenes. They have such a unique relationship. Besides finding John, Kim is also hoping to find Reacher. Although part of the series, this can also be read as a stand-alone. This is definitely a page turner!
FBI agent Otto is on a temporary reprieve trying to locate Jack Reacher. She appears to have a healthy respect for him. He's always one step ahead. Based in the Detroit office she is contacted by a powerful and influential individual named Finley. He also wants to contact Reacher. Otto's boss at the FBI is wisely not part of the equation. Her assignment is in New Mexico where a powerful and ruthless drug trafficker is operating. Intelligence assumes Reacher might be there. Non stop action. Enjoyed immensely!!
Diane you have done it again. What a great read. Loved the whole entire plot. Way to keep Gasper involved also. Plus Gasper introducing Kim to Michael Flint. Made a good pair at the right time. Kim finally stepped up and gave the boss the middle one. Good for her. She is right he needs her more than she needs him. Plus working with Finley is a little easier. But as always Reached is there when needed. Opening up Kim's role was excellent to the story. Best one yet 5 stars plus!!!!! Thanks ,Carl Clause
This is my first of the hunt for Reacher books. I will read them all before I am done. I am a huge Lee Child fan. I have read everything Jack Reacher from first to most recent. I didn't even know this series existed until I recently saw a blip from Child. Well, this was fabulous! I loved that I knew just the case about the Montana bunch that Kim referred to and I remembered more when she interviewed Holly! Great story. Well written! Thank you. On to the next one.
A take off on the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child. Kim Otto is an FBI agent tasked to track down Jack Reacher in this series. In this case she is searching for a fried and agent following up on a tip in a New Mexico. The agent has gone missing and in the search she is also looking to draw Reacher in and also runs into a Mexican Drug lord who has set up under the cover of a local commune Lots action but where is Jack? Will he show even when Kim emails a plea to a known contact of Jack. You will need to read the book to find out.
I generally like the books featuring Jack Reacher as a character, but had not yet started the titles in the Search for Jack Reacher series. I found the story to be engaging, even though Jack Reacher is very much in the background. I rated this as a 4 primarily due to the very poor editing of the book, which I find frustrating. It appears to me that no in person editing happens, which allows for stupid errors such as break instead of brake. Overall I enjoyed the book and will probably read more from this series.
I loved this book and it started out fast and kept me reading as fast as I could. I have read most of the Jack Reacher books. I wasn't sure I would like another author to write about Jack, but fortunately as soon as I began reading the first book that Diane Capri wrote I was completely captivated. And I have read all of this series. Thank you to the author and publisher for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own
Wonderful addition to the "mythology" of Jack Reacher. Otto is still looking for Reacher in this one, but it also gets personal when her sometimes more than friend is kidnapped. How is Reacher involved in this, if at all? A lot happens in a short time and you are kept guessing until the end. What a great read!
Another great story by Diane Capri as Agent Otto continues in her search for Jack Reacher without the assistance of her old partner, Gaspar. However, she does get help from an unknown as she saves many people in a commune from a drug cartel that has taken over the property. A super read, I enjoyed it very much.
I finished this just because I started the series, but I wasn't impressed with this. The connection to the source material was minimal, the plot was thin, yet Finlay and the Boss were there at every step. Didn't have any interest either in Otto's thoughts on her relationship with Lawton. Flint was an interesting new character, but I miss Gaspar.
Agent kim Otto is contacted by Finlay to locate and rescue Agent Lawton of the IRS and very close frien of Otto’s who has been kidnapped by Pinto Vigo a boss of the Vigo drug cartel. She realizes she needs help so she contacts Jake Reacher, Reacher’s nephew to get a message to him. Gaspar for help. Will Reacher show up? Cross your fingers.
I debated in the eating and would give it a 4.5, if it was an option.
Altho it took a few chapters to become totally engrossed in this search for Jack Reacher, there came a point in Kim Otto’s adventures with the Vigo drug cartel and searching for John Lawton, the IRS agent she’d been dating who disappeared on an assignment out in Albuquerque, that I didn’t want to put the book down.
This book is an amazing read. I was enthralled from the first words. Agent Kim Otto is at her finest. This series has the best characters. I highly recommend the entire series. Each one better than the last!
Another great book in the Reacher universe. I just love it. This time it's not so much about Reacher as about Otto ignoring her boss. Well written as usual. If you haven't tried this series I suggest that you do.
Good fast read! Think this might be one way to keep up with Reacher as latest novel - The Sentinel - was a real disappointment. Really like Otto and glad we still keep up with Gaspar. Intriguing increased involvement of Finlay - wonder where that is going.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I'm hooked. Hunting Reacher is as good as Reacher.
I'm just as hooked on hunting Reacher as I am on Reacher himself. Fast pace keeps you reading, sometimes well into the night. Sleeping is overrated when reading Reacher, or hunting Reacher. 😁
And ending up disappointed. Not at all like my favorite protagonist, Ben Porter in False Assurances, Threat Bias, Subversive Addiction and Vital Deception!
