"The Story" is described as book of 365 Devotions, but there are actually 366 devotions in this book (the extra devotion is a bonus, at least it is for me). The devotions do not have dates on them, so it can be started at any time of the year. It numbers the devotions from 1 to 366, has a title for each devotion, a main Scripture verse for each devotion, contains an encouraging devotion related to Scripture, and gives readers something to think about in closing each devotion, which sometimes include how you might want to pray, an insight, or words of encouragement. The Scripture verses are in order as they appear in most Bibles, with the exception of at least one main verse I remember reading that I think was included to help with the topic of other another Scripture like it on another day. There is an appendix in the back of the book to go deeper into "The Story", and a notes section that highlights important notes throughout the book.

I like the format of this devotion book because of its orderly fashion with the Scriptures. The Scriptures written out often did not give the whole amount of passages for the verses given, so that was an encouragement for me to look up the whole section of Scripture and sometimes what was around it in my Bible. It also showed me in a different way than I already knew that the Old Testament is much larger than the New Testament because there were more devotions that applied to the Old Testament; only a little over one hundred and twenty of them come from the New Testament.

What personally got the most of my attention in this devotion book was learning that Paul and Silas sang hymns (based on Acts 16:25), which I had mostly given up on in the past and replaced it with more modern songs. I have had the hymns back in my life for a short amount of time but still find myself enjoying more modern songs that apply to the ancient Scriptures sometimes also. So I am glad for learning about a verse that applies to people in the ancient days singing hymns.

This is definitely a type of devotion that can be started at any time of the year. If you need to skip a day or want to read more than one devotion a day you can just pick up where you left off.

While it is no replacement for regular Bible reading, I enjoy looking through and reading daily devotion type books. For one thing, I often find that when I just sit to read the Bible, my mind can sometimes wander. Or meditating on a particular passage just feels difficult… like I don’t know where to settle on it. Devotions are handy in the ways that sometimes, they can quickly point us to something we might otherwise miss. Almost like a mini-sermon for our day.

The Story devotional is 365 short devotions (and by short, I mean the same length as this book review… or perhaps even shorter than that!). Each devotion has a verse or short passage, a brief devotion to go along with it, and then a “thought for the day”. There is one for every day of the year.

For the most part, the passages selected for each day move right in order through the Bible (not that you’ll read through the entire Bible… but the order of the devotions is fairly chronological). Around day 243, you leave the Old Testament for the New. The synopsis, states that this devotion works as a companion to The Story Bible. There is even a section in the back that tells you what pages of The Story go with which set of devotions.

Overall, I liked this book. The feature I can appreciate most is it’s brevity– however, that also means that it’s not a very meaty book. I could see this being a good devotional for someone trying to develop the habit of getting into the Word a bit more or if you are just looking for something a little extra to add in to your day somewhere.

**I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.**

The Story
365 Devotions

Discover your role in God's Story...

This devotional uses excerpts of The Story to take one through the Bible in a year. No this is not an exhaustive complete trip through the Bible but rather an overview. Day 1 is Genesis 1:1-3, Day 2 is Genesis 1:11. The daily verse selection is then pondered and sometimes further verses are offered for further contemplation.

Day 243 is the change over from Old to New Testament in which God's silence to humanity is addressed. Days 244 - 253 address the birth of Jesus through the family's escape to Egypt.

The Appendix in the back of the book references where the excerpted verse selection is taken from in The Story so that the reader can read this in conjunction with this devotional and get a fuller picture of the whole story. I have a copy of The Story so I compared this feature and it is an excellent aid.

This is a quick devotional nothing requiring deep thinking, one could say it is an appetizer to start off your day or a snack before turning in for the night. This would also be good for family devotion time as the readings are not long and could facilitate a deeper discussion. The majority of the verses are taken from the New International Version (NIV) according to the title / copyright page information in the front of the book.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher through BookLook Bloggers, a positive review was not required and all opinions expressed are my own.
