Big-hearted Morgan Greene must save the dog next door from his heavy chain and miserable life. She can’t let his former master find him and punish him, but becoming invisible in a small town isn’t easy. When her beloved mother nature becomes a foe, Morgan’s sense of safety is shattered but she seizes the opportunity to disappear. Running away will add to her family’s old heartbreak that may never heal, yet Morgan turns her back on the home she loves and sets out to save herself and the dog. Finding herself in a small coastal town in California, homegrown farm girl Morgan meets tough, rebellious Bobbi Summer. As Bobbi struggles to free herself from a nasty relationship, she faces her own life-altering tragedy. Morgan and Bobbi forge an unlikely friendship and learn to face their uncertain futures together. On their journeys, Morgan and Bobbi encounter dogs and cats suffering in a backward shelter and, together, they embark on the seemingly-impossible task of saving them all.

Jill has an incredibly sensitive heart for animals and our feathered friends and gives voice to them in beautiful, poetic passages like this:

Not being a bird mother, she tended to the little one the best she could and hoped he was just stunned from the rain or a misjudged window…."You can’t fly away on wet wings, little one.” She stroked his wobbly head with one finger. “Although that’s exactly when we need to fly most, isn’t it?”

This is a thought-provoking book filled with powerful, poetic imagery.
