Sydona Wilder and her fairy Raoul, are back as they join the Sparrows rebellion group to fight the National Fliers Association. Even after the supposed death of the NFA leader, Dr. Malik, the experiments still continue.Despite losing her ability to fly, her new mission is to eradicate the remaining camps and free her people. As she becomes more entwined with the Sparrows, she discovers a world of politics and betrayals where the only one she can trust is herself.

I received Sparrows from the author, Laura Mae in exchange for an honest review. So, let’s get this started! It took me longer than expected to read this book, but that was my own fault. Life happens. So, when I was finally able to sit and read it, I was excited. Personally, I never judge a book or its story by the first few chapters, and even if I’m not liking the story I will continue to read it because I feel every author deserves to have their book, their hard work, their “baby”, read until the complete end. So, with how Sparrows started, I am glad that I always have that in mind because, if I’m being honest, I found the first chapter to be a bit boring and that carried on for a few more chapters. Though, I also found the first five or so chapters of Fliers boring as well and ended up liking the book. So, with that in mind, plus my outlook on all books, I kept reading! I found very little mistakes, and the ones I found were so small that I cannot even remember what they were anymore! Some of the characters were charming and funny, others were annoying, but I assume that was how Laura Mae wanted to portray the characters. Syd was a badass, of course. But my favorite had to be Raoul; I loved his spirit, his personality, everything. Though the book started off slow and I often found myself setting it down and doing something else, by the end I was glad that I continued to read it. I liked the characters and the storyline. I am giving Sparrows a rating of 3.75, but since they don't have that option or even a 3.5 option, I will mark it as a 4. Thank you for the ARC Laura Mae. My Blog Review
I cried a lot reading this sequel. Laura captures the horror of Sydona Wilder being on the run with her ever-faithful fairy friend Raoul, with such depth, love, fear, and excitement, that the story unfolds in a blossom of fantasy-styalized writing, that only she knows how to bring to life. Sydona learns to trust again, only to be flung to and fro, by her peers, into an array of fast-changing emotions; with constantly trying to figure out who to trust, and who not to. She's on a quest for revenge, from Dr. Malik; the one person she loathes, and that has brought so much pain into her life. I can't say enough about how phenomenally-written this book is! You really need this sequel in your life! If I could give the rating of 100-stars, I surely would! Bravo to the author, for bringing yet another gorgeous read, into the world of fantasy!
“Sparrows” is the sequel to the book “Fliers”. I loved the first book so much, I didn't think the story would get any better. I was so wrong.
I was hooked from the very start until the end. The descriptive words used, succeeded in creating vivid scenes and strong emotions the reader can easily feel. As for the main characters, I could clearly discern the growth each of them had gone through, especially Sydona.
Raoul, the ever-faithful friend of Sydona, has changed due to the horrendous torture Dr. Malik had put him through. When I found out what happened in detail, I kept wishing Sydona would succeed in exacting her revenge on Dr. Malik for all the suffering he has caused. Silas is still our favorite bad boy and I nearly melt every time he tried to cheer Sydona up and comfort her in desperate times. I can’t praise this book enough. When I reached the end there was one phrase I later realized, it has everything to do with the story.
“Fight and love without fear.”
If you have read Fliers then you just have to read Sparrows too. If you haven’t read Fliers, what are you waiting for? These books will both make you laugh and bring you to tears.
Sparrows by @lauramaeauthor 🧚♂️ Syd is hurt by events in book one. In Sparrows she has one thing in mind: getting Dr. Malek and get even. Nothing is ever as easy as planned, and Syd finds out the hard way. At the end all that matters is the people that she cares for. I guess I find out in book 3 if she is stong enough to keep fighting....
A solid fallow up to Fliers. Expanding on the world and the character development is top knotch. I really enjoyed the pacing of the book. I continue to be be invested in the characters and can not wait to see how she follows up this one. Great read
Being one of the very first to read the first installment of this series, I had to wait a year for the second one. Let's just say, it did not disappoint! I absolutely loved it and read the entire thing in one sitting. If you like fantasy at all, you have to give this series a try! Now, I'm itching to read the third one.
Fliers (book 1) and Sparrows (book 2) were sent to us by the author, Laura Mae💗 We appreciate this more than words can say! First of all, I love when I am introduced to a series that has already released multiple books in the collection! There is nothing worse than getting hooked on book 1 and then having to wait a year to find out what happens next! Sydona is a “Flier”, a species of humans that can fly, and her companion, Raoul, is a fairy. Together they embark upon a journey to try to take down the NFA, a secret government agency that experiments on Fliers in a prison-like setting. Along their journey they meet fellow Fliers and a member of The Sparrows, a Resistance group that fights against the NFA. Together they hatch a plan to infiltrate the NFA to take them down. Chaos and unexpected obstacles ensue along their way... will they succeed or will they become victims of the organization they are seeking to destroy??? These books are of the fantasy fiction genre and are cute, quick reads that can really take your mind off of all of the craziness of the world right now.
I received an advanced reader copy in exchange for my review.
In Book 1, Fliers, We're introduced to Sydona and Fliers, humanoid beings with the ability to fly. They are hunted and captured and imprisoned in camps, so experiments can be done on them. Humans are trying to figure out how to gain the flying ability. Sydona has a companion fairy, Raoul, who has been with her since childhood. When Sydona was a young girl, her parents were kidnapped by the corrupt government, and she and Raoul barely escape and then spent many decades in hiding. Eventually they end up in the camp where Sydona's parents are. All hell breaks loose and there's a huge battle.
In Book 2: Sparrows, Sydona has escaped after the camp was destroyed and Fliers escape. She ends up joining and training with the resistance group called : The Sparrows.
We learn more about her and her internal struggles, her dark past, and her addictions.
There is action, magic, heartbreak and twists.
The biggest issue I had was the eruption of swearing. There are at least 15-20 F words, plus lots of other colorful language. In Book 1 there was barely any swearing, definitely no F words. There is talk about drug use and excessive drinking, and thematic violence and fighting. Book 1 would be rated PG-13, and Book 2 would definitely be Rated R.
Some of the impactful, climatic moments fell flat in my opinion. Some parts felt rushed and lacked explanation or description enough to satisfy me.
Overall, I am intrigued by this story and this world. It is certainly unique and I love the mythos of how the Fliers came to be. I am curious to see how it all concludes in book 3.
I left a lot out of my review, so I didn't spoil it for you. If you aren't bothered by the elements I mentioned, I recommend giving this Indie series a read.
I received an ebook copy of this book and book #1 from the author in exchange for an honest review. I give it a solid 7/10, or 3/5 stars because I enjoyed it even more than Fliers! A lot of what I disliked about the first book was improved in this one, and I started getting settled into the world and its characters. There are plenty of twists and exciting scenes--and a sudden shift in tone, which was a bit jarring at first. I personally wasn't bothered by the increase in swearing, but it's not something the average reader would expect after the first book which was more or less a YA Fantasy. I still found this book very fun to read, and recommend it to fellow fans of dark, high-stakes Fantasy!
'Sparrows' is a spectacular sequel to a spectacular debut. It has everything one could want from a fantasy novel including a large, varied cast of three-dimensional characters; ample, laugh-inducing mischief and mayhem; truly gut-wrenching drama that is surprisingly relatable even though the book is fantasy; a sweet, non-idealized romance you can root for; and enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until the end. Every time I thought I had the plot figured out I was totally wrong! Laura Mae is truly gifted and she just keeps getting better. I can't recommend this book enough.
Thank you everyone for all of your support!! I am so excited about Sparrows and I hope you enjoy it! If you loved Fliers, you'll definitely love this one! Thanks again!
