Mutant numbers are drastically on the rise. New projections show that in 20 years homo superior will eclipse homo sapiens as Earth’s dominant species. The X-Men are united under the leadership of Charles Xavier and are gathering all mutants to the mutant nation of Krakoa. They have consolidated power through creating powerful new drugs to aid humanity that cure its most devastating physical and mental diseases and extends longevity. But where did this new medicine come from? Will the rest of the world respect Krakoa’s sovereignty or will the mutants have to fight for their right to party exist as a nation? And what’s going on in the disembodied Sentinel head floating near the sun…

Jonathan Hickman returns to the Marvel Universe after blowing it up in Secret Wars except this time he’s relaunching the entire X-Men line with a similarly epic new storyline. Good! The X-Men have been without a compelling story arc for the longest time. I don’t even care when or how Xavier returned from the dead or why all the mutant characters, heroes and villains, are suddenly on the same side; I just want to read a good X-Men story that isn’t bogged down with dreary, convoluted continuity nonsense!

And House of X #1 isn’t bad. I like Xavier’s new look, though having Cerebro as a helmet makes him seem derivative of Ultimate Reed Richards/The Maker from Hickman’s last Marvel storyline. And speaking of Makers, there is biblical imagery galore in that opening scene that looks like its set in a weird new Garden of Eden with Xavier walking amongst it all like the Old Testament God (or maybe Devil?). Hickman lays on the god stuff pretty thickly though it lends the story an appealing weight and seriousness.

Like most first issues, there’s a lot of setup. Magneto and the Cuckoos are meeting ambassadors from around the world; the classic cast – Xavier, Jean Grey (as Marvel Girl), Wolverine – are welcoming the new mutant arrivals on Krakoa; and Mystique, Toad and Sabretooth are up to their usual shenanigans in New York. It was interesting to see how the mutants have developed their own language to go with their new home and they have a mutants-only transport network system in the portals to move around the planet seamlessly. Hickman’s trademark infographics pages also help explain some of the terminology for new readers like what Omega-Level mutants are. And I’m not sure what the Sentinel head in space is meant to be about – undoubtedly a hint as to an as-yet-unknown larger threat - but I’m intrigued. There’s some solid world-building in this issue.

The most effective thing Hickman does in this comic is establish a growing sense of unease: I couldn’t shake the feeling that the X-Men – not just Magneto, Mystique, etc. but Xavier and the usual good guys – are ALL villains. Which, if that’s the case, is a really interesting and unexpected approach to take. So who’re the heroes? In this issue at least, it’s the Fantastic Four which I’m sure Hickman fans will love as that’s the series he’s received the most praise for during his time at Marvel. The FF step up to Mystique and co. and then face Cyclops in a tense encounter.

Having read enough of his work before, I have my doubts as to whether Hickman will be able to deliver the goods – he’s strong when it comes to establishing big idea stories but rarely realises them satisfactorily – and nothing here really blew my hair back, but House of X #1 is a solid foundation to base the beginning of what will no doubt be an ambitious and sprawling story.

Major sigh of relief after reading this first issue, its even better than I was waiting for. Hickman is building a whole new world for the mutants, forget everything you've read so far, this story promises to take the X-Men in a complete new direction, feels so new and refreshing, I'm loving it to pieces. Also, Pepe Larraz was the perfect choice for the illustrations, can't wait to read more.

Hickman has come into the game to save X-Men.

Actually, there's some recent X-Men I liked. While Bendis run is pretty old now in comparison, I enjoyed a lot of it. I also enjoyed some inbetween them, mostly Rosenberg's stuff, and Taylor's. However, besides those two, it's been okayish-decent-or pretty bad. So it's nice to see Hickman give a boost to the X-Men they needed.

This big sized issue 1 really shows where the X-men are now. They are in their own piece of the world trying to live in a Utopia for their people. This has been done before but for the first time you feel the X-Men are in charge. That they are the ones in control. A meeting with politicals for Magneto doesn't end in bloodshed but in a warning, a future these humans are not ready for. Cyclops meets the fantastic four and let's them know they will not backdown anymore. A lot of it is set up for a new future for the X-Men. One they will not be hunted anymore.

While the pacing sometimes felt slow and a lot of set up, the payoff worked good. Also, art is pretty fantastic. A 4 out of 5. Excited to see where we go from here.

Very intriguing start for this new series. Two series actually that will go on at the same time but interlinked (House of X, and Power X (not sure about the name of the second but something like that). Typically Hickman that remind me of the Infinity War/Avengers run he did a while ago and then I'm going through at the moment! We'll see how it goes but it will probably keep up with my expectation! I'm confident about this one!

Zamurowało mnie. Jestem zszokowana. Ten zeszyt zostawił mnie w poczuciu nabożnej czci.

TO WSZYSTKO CZEGO ZAWSZE PRAGNĘŁAM DLA MUTANTÓW, MOJE DZIECI SĄ BEZPIECZNE I SZCZĘŚLIWE.

Boję się czytać dalej. Możemy uznać, że to one-shot i skończone, pozamiatane, żyli długo i było im zmutowanie?

Like most of Hickman's work, it's a slow burn, but man does it set up an interesting story. This is the best thing to happen to the X-Men in ages.

So glad I’ve avoided spoilers for this. It starts quite unexpected and seems to be a mystery filled with unease to unravel.

I’m loving that they gave Hickman so much room to play. We’ve been saying we don’t want to keep everything the same just retelling the same stories, well this may be the risk we’ve been asking for. Now to see if it comes with reward!

I'll review this later after I've seen what's Issue 3 or 4 can give. But for now I would simply say Is;

"X-men was never been more relevant in comic industry for a longass time until now"

If you ever subscribe to any comicbook fan page on facebook/Twitter & watch alot of Comic/Manga review. I'm pretty sure their gonna talk about what's the fust about Hickman's doing in X-men right now and everybody is hype on what's his cooking to this book.

Liked this Stan Lee Quote from 1968, which is reprinted in "House of X" issue #1.

The next time anyone puts you down for reading a comic mag, try hitting him with this little solioquy which I've used on various radio and TV guest appearances in the past few months.

Comic books are a medium of communication -- just as television and motion pictures are. All three employ words and pictures, and all must be judged on their individual merits. A story is a story, whether presented between two covers, or on a screen. If the words have dramatic impact, if the pictures are visually appealing, if the theme is emotionally relevant, then certainly it is worthy of a reader's attention. However, if quality is lacking, then it rats little consideration. Isn't this equally true of a TV program, a Broadway show, a motion picture, or any other form of entertainment?

The comic is interesting, mainly exposition -- the writer, Hickman, is doing a lot of world building. The artist and colorist are rather good. Also the comic requires critical thinking skills to figure out, so many fans may not be able to follow it?
It's definitely an adult comic. With some interesting themes and ideas -- more speculative science fiction.

The world-building is the most detailed that I've seen in comics for quite some time now.

The themes are topical -- basically tribalism and xenophobia and racism. The plot in this issue is that Professor Xavier has figured out a way to protect mutants, by forming an alliance with Krakoa, a living plant/biome that is also a mutant. Krakoa provides a sanctuary for mutants and prevents humans from entering it without permission. They are protected from the "human" race or "mankind" who is threatened by mutants and wants to destroy them outright or enslave them or weaponize them.

So nothing new here -- what is new is the how and the schematics. Also Xavier, realizing that the humans won't leave them alone once they discover the sanctuary, decides instead of hiding -- to stand tall and proud, and basically give an ultimatum of sorts -- "we have life-giving drugs, but in exchange for these cures to all your ailments, we request amnesty, and recognition of our island nation. And the agreement that you will not try to exterminate, enslave, or weaponize us for your own uses any longer." Humanity's response, fuck that, we won't be threatened. And they start building a doomsday project to take out the mutants. (Sigh. Unfortunately I think this is the realistic response. It's also clearly the writer reacting to our world. You really can't be a conservative or Trump supporter and be an X-men fan.)

The Fantastic Four make an appearance, and it is a good one. Their appearance throws in some ambiguity. Are the X-men's exclusionary tactics any different than humanity's? Also the issue is very much in the point of view or perspective of humanity, seeing mutants as a plausible evolutionary threat to their continued existence. X-men has always been big on biological sci-fi and anthropological sci-fi -- which is why I also like it. (Huge fan of both.)

What is new about it -- is that the mutants have joined together and are no longer working against each other. Magneto, Mystique, Toad, Sabretooth, etc have all form alliances with Xavier and the X-men -- one tribe, one family, one group. Working together to protect their resources, such as Omega mutants (those with an unlimited power) at all costs, and to protect their continued existence and home.

Ranged against them are the usual suspects: AIM, STRIKE, SHIELD (hence the reason I couldn't watch Marvel Agents of Shield for very long ...it irritated me. In the X-men comics - SHIELD is equivalent to TRUMP's ICE Squad. Whedon tried to separate it out a bit. MCU movie verse worked because the X-men aren't in it, yet.)

There is the scary bit -- about Magneto telling the humans to see them, the mutants as gods. Or "your gods have been replaced by us, we'll notice if you don't defer." Very Magneto -- and his critical flaw.

While Cyclops is far more diplomatic with the Richards family - stating "We're protecting our own. We haven't tried to exterminate, enslave or weaponize you. And we haven't declared WAR on you. Oh, and when you're son comes of age and feels he needs a safe place, let him know we'll always accept him." Franklin Richards is an Omega level mutant.

My quibble, so far, is how women are represented -- but that's also realistic. Jean Grey is once again Marvel Girl -- in the old Marvel Girl costume. But the woman do have and wield power on both sides. AND -- what the writer is doing right is providing the humans who want to end the mutants with a bit more depth, and also ambiguity -- they aren't one-dimensional bad guys like they were in the previous runs. Or all men. Here, we have Dr. Alia Gregor -- who is far more complex, and had originally been studying them for humanitarian reasons, until she realized that mutants were a major threat to her and her species continued existence. So, it's been made a bit more complicated and more layers.

Also, the writer is correct that in order to tell the story effectively, he needs to outline the parameters of it, the rules, guidelines, and world. You need to know the world you are in -- before proceeding. Particularly if you are taking a long-standing series and changing that world along with its parameters. Re-booting it.

My difficulty with the issue -- is well, it's lacking much in character interactions and relationships. (ie. the soapy aspects that I adore to pieces.) I really want a scene between Scott and Xavier, the man he killed while possessed by the Phoenix. OR Scott and Jean discussing it. OR how various characters got resurrected. But alas, that may or may not be forthcoming.

It is artistically well done, and well written. With an interesting design, if a somewhat difficult to read one. The print is very very tiny in places. Requiring a lot of manuevering on my Kindle Fire to enlarge digitally. I'm not sure what it looks like in the paper issue -- it may have the same problems.

This is an adult comic and an interesting one. I'm looking forward to the next issue. Very happy to see the X-men finally going in a new and interesting direction.

House of X is having a hot boy/girl summer. Jonathan Hickman, writer, and artists Pepe Larraz and Marte Gracia teased an explosive new era for X-men. If House of X is any indication of the franchise's new direction, I see no lies.
📖
📖
📖
Professor X has founded a refuge for mutants on Krakoa, a living island, with the assistance of Magneto. Professor Xaiver invited six ambassadors from different countries to propose an offer impossible to refuse. He's in possession of three prescription drugs that could change the face of humanity, but...buttttttt these nations must recognize Krakoa as a sovereign nation in exchange for the miracle medicine. Professor X has drawn a red line between mutants and vanilla humans using a permanent expo marker.
📖
📖
📖
House of X's tone is undeniably sinister. I couldn't make heads or tails of the new setup. The alignment of Professor X and Magneto, the undertone of violence and the scene with Cyclops and the Fantastic Four felt surreal. Dare I say, but Professor X is villainous. It's genius! And I'm here for the ride.
📖
📖
📖
Key points
- Orchis
- The Cro-Magnon Problem
- Omega Level Mutants (named and given a definitive definition)
- Flowers
- Cypher (not a key point I just love him)
- Krakoa (how will this develop?)

Not sure I actually read the director's cut but it's the only one listed. This book is off to a big weird start and I am here for it. All the groundwork is set for what the status quo for the X-men is going to be for the foreseeable future. I appreciated the different approaches that are shown with how the group going forward deals with the world's government and the superheroes. My only qualm with it is that Hickman's propensity to use dossier like pages as transitions (see Black Monday Murders or East of West) is used here and it just feels off. Also, I think this marks complete removal of Bendis's work on the X-men.

What a fantastic start to a new series. I already hate that this is only going to be a miniseries, because this has so much potential. But considering all the buzz that has been going on about this series already, that's not terribly surprising.
That being said, I was expecting this one not to live up to my expectations, since they had been raised (again, due to all the buzz about it). And you know what? It actually did live up to those expectations.
This world the X-Men are creating is fascinating, and in many ways more ethical than the one that X-Man had created. It's a perfect contrast, just coming off of that series.

Alright! I'm going to see how far down this rabbit hole I can go. I have always wanted to tackle this MASSIVE X-Men relaunch that took place many years ago and there is no time like the present. This was a well paced, well drawn, and engaging first issue. I like all the lore put into it and the set up has me very excited. The art was quite nice too.

Despite the Hickman hype, this doesn't feel like canon and more like an alternate timeline. My reaction is meh and I'm not really impressed.

Basically, the manipulative old fart Xavier created a new mutant "nation" or "paradise" and everybody in it believes in mutant supremacy. Probably got something to do with Apocalypse or the old fart finally shows his true colors and telepathically manipulated every mutants. Maybe.

I'm hoping that this is just another of those alternate reality or timeline crap since there is no real connection between this and last Uncanny X-Men issue.

Firstly, I forgot how small single issue comics are. I normally wait on collected editions so I have something more substantial to read before picking them so I was a little miffed at how fast I finished this, but that's all on me.

Secondly, I gave up on marvel a long time ago as I just found it a little too vanilla and a bit take compared to DC. I agree it's like comparing the edginess of jumping off a two foot step and a three foot step but still, that's how I felt.

With the two caveats above I still decided to pick this up as I have missed the X series for a while and thought this may be an interesting re-entry point to the series. The whole thing was a wee bit odd and due to the short nature of the book nothing much happended but it is certainly interesting premise and I have a few inklings of wheere they may take it, but that remains to be seen.

Interesting all the same and I wanted to keep reading, art was a little sketchy around the edges but otherwise, overall, I'm all in for now at least.

I was assuming this would be good, but man I didn’t expect this. The scope and the world building is incredible. There were so many new things to see and witness in this book that will intrigue you in a massive way. I cant wait to see the story grow and evolve into what Hickman has up his sleeve. Plus Magneto has two different quotes that had me like, hell yeah talk that ish Erik!!
