The Svensson Brothers #0

After His Peonies

Rate this book
Hunter

Rules are meant to be broken. Except for one–Women can't get enough peonies.

Even the girl in front of me in line is admiring the peonies in my hand.

While I need these particular flowers for my latest plot, I'll still give Meghan the biggest, thickest bouquet I can find.

It's flattering how much she wants my peonies–

And I don't mind personally delivering.

Meghan

I love rules. They make life simple.

One rule I have for my future boyfriend? Fresh flowers every week.

The hot guy behind me in line had a gorgeous bouquet. He was perfect boyfriend material…

Until Mr. Perfect broke the unwritten rule of New York City lunch hour and found a devious way to cut the line.

He took my spot, making me late for a meeting, and then had the audacity to hand me his peonies as he waltzed out with what should have been my sandwich!

A wink and flowers from a handsome guy won't fix my disaster of a life.

My career as a lawyer is failing before it even started.

I live in a tiny, crumbling apartment.

I have to deal with my obnoxious supervisor who seems intent on taking Hunter's peonies for herself

Except that his peonies (and other flowers) are mine.

They were delivered to my desk at work!

Bouquet aside, Hunter breaks all my rules. I know I should ignore him. I know it's going to be an epic disaster.

But when he shows up at my door shirtless, with another excessive bouquet, well, I have to say screw the rules; I want his peonies and the rest of him too!

This is a fun novella that is a prequel kickoff to my new romantic comedy series about the Svensson Brothers! This RomCom features a boiling hot romance, the largest selection of hot brothers to ever grace your e-reader, oh and a massive freaking cliffhanger! *sorry-not-sorry-since-it's-a-prequal-and-I-pinky-promise-I-will-make-it-right*.

the people making fun of these books because of the titles don't know how to have fun and it shows.

i'm not going to write a full review for this because it's honestly the strangest thing i've ever read. the cover doesn't exactly scream "the hero was in a polygamist cult and has TWENTY THREE brothers because of his father's multiple wives". but, what do you expect from the title and tagline? it's supposed to be weird and kooky. making fun of it for that is redundant since the author is literally making fun of herself and her characters with it. some people are just boring.

i mainly didn't give this a higher rating because of the strange plotlines (i.e. the hero was in a cult and has TWENTY THREE BROTHERS) and the ending is so abrupt. i thought this was a standalone, but the couple aren't even together at the end. why was it dragged into a series for no viable reason? also, the dirty talk during the sex scenes was... cringe. BUT, i had so much fun reading this and there were moments that literally left me with tears streaming down my face. i love things that don't take themselves seriously - most of you can tell with my jana aston obsession - so it was an enjoyable experience for me, even if it was WEIRD.

Meghan was waiting in line at the sandwich shop for her lunch. She had a very important meeting at the law firm and could not be late, so the slow line was very annoying. When she made associate at the firm, life would be so much better and she could afford to buy a new suit, and maybe get her hair done now and then. While she was imagining these things, she smelled peonies, her favorite flowers. Pretending to rummage in her purse, she glimpsed the man behind her who held the bouquet – he was perfect! He met every one of her criteria for the perfect boyfriend! From behind her, she heard him dial his phone. The sandwich guy stopped what he was slowly working on to answer the phone. Mr. Perfect then placed an order for her favorite prosciutto sandwich! The sandwich guy abandoned the one he was working on to make the take-out sandwich for Mr. Perfect! Noooo, that is against the rules! He can’t do that! She turned around to scold him, but he was amused and smug. They called his name and he went to get his sandwich! On the way out, he handed her two of his flowers. When it was her turn to order, they were all out of prosciutto – Mr. Perfect had gotten the last one!

Not having time to eat now, Meghan hurried back to the office. Her supervisor was already blaming her for not getting a custody document prepared which she had never been asked to do. Her phone rang and she dumped a smoothie all over her suit!

Hunter headed back to the Svensson & Svensson Law office, still smiling at how upset the brunette had gotten with him. He handed the flowers to Danielle, the soon-to-be-ex-wife of Walter Holbrook who had cheated Hunter and his half-brother out of their billion-dollar company. He had a plan to get the company back and needed her help. What he wanted was some information about pharmaceutical companies and potential interests Holbrook Enterprises was exploring. Danielle readily agreed. Then they left for the discovery meeting at Harrington-Thurlow.

Meghan’s supervisor made her prepare the document, then said it was horrible and would not be used. Meghan went to the ladies room to clean her smoothie-soaked blouse and associates gave her a hard time. So she ran into a hidden room no one knew about, took off her blouse, and then cried over her horrible day. Suddenly the door opened and a man ran inside – it was the sandwich thief, she could smell it! He asked if she was meeting a guy in there since it was a small room and she was half-dressed, and said he suspected she had a kinky side. She immediately stopped crying to snap at him, which was his goal to shock her out of her tears. He told her she should have gotten a sandwich like his and not that awful smoothie, which got her madder. She told him he took the last one, so he said he should have given her all of his peonies to make up for it if he had known. With his mispronunciation, she told him it was pronounced pee-OWN-ies, not PEE-nies (sounding very much like a male body part). When she finds out this annoying man is a member of opposing counsel, that may be the last straw for her!

This book was adorable! I couldn’t stop laughing at the continuous situations that played out between Meghan and Hunter! Throw in a little competition for Hunter’s affections from Meghan’s supervisor, and you can see the mayhem is not going to be stopping soon. Grab your copy and plunge into the fun as the organized, serious lady meets a guy who loves bending the rules!

Billionaire/wanna be lawyer, rule breaker vs rule follower, miscommunication, and hot spice.

Hunter and Meg will not get their HEA until book 7 in the series, but you will see their history/relationship progress through the other books.

It does end in a cliffhanger!

I listened to the audiobook of this, and loved it! I think that hearing the voices gives you so much more as a reader. You really can feel the emotions. You connect much quicker to the characters as well. These narrators were top notch.

Prequel to the series but cute to read on its own as well.

Actually, this novella is a 4.5 for me. It is a prequel to the Svensson Brothers series and I wish I would have read it first. I started the series with the second full novel, On His Paintbrush, then continued to #3 In Her Pumpkin Patch and this novella, After His Peonies. I love the Svensson Brothers universe author Alina Jacobs has created and am looking forward to reading about the brothers, cousins and other connected books.

If I had one complaint, it wouldn't apply to this book but it would apply two the two full length novels I have read so far. The sex is too repetitive! My gosh, these people go at it like rabbits. A few less descriptions (which all start sounding the same anyway) would go a long way to making the novels shorter and tighter. That being said, the sex scenes in After His Peonies worked really well and were not the same thing written over and over.

There are so many great characters in this series and the humor has me laughing so hard it's cathartic! Now my big decision is whether to go back and read novel #1, In Her Candy Jar, or go on to #4, Between Her Biscuits. I will read every book in the series eventually. We don't get the conclusion to Hunter and Meg's story until novel #7, but they both appear in all the novels. I think these could be stand alone novels, but once you read one, you want to know what happens to all the brothers.

First off I love the prequel, the cliffhanger ending - not sure much so I am holding the author to her 'pinkie promise - to make this right'. All that being said this was a great introduction to the Svensson brothers. I liked Meghan, the girl has her checklist for her man and what girl would not lie fresh flowers, not sure about weekly myself but for a just because works. Meghan is busting her butt as an intern for a law firm and is treated horribly. She is having the worst day when she goes out to gran a sandwich and crosses paths with Hunter while waiting in the worlds longest line. She smells fresh flowers, peonies to be exact but that the best moment of her day because after this, her day continues to fall apart. Hunter is a no rules guy and breaks any rule he comes across except for one, a girl needs flowers. Hunter is in the middle of his own whirlwind of life challenges. These two characters are just amazing but when they find themselves on opposing sides of the counsel table, this just becomes absolutely entertaining and intriguing.

4.5 stars for me...I adore all things Alina Jacobs and will read and listen to anything she does. I love that this was a back story for Meg and Hunter's beginnings. While we see them in so many of Jacob's other reads, I love that I final have the story of where it all began with these two. While this does not end in a HEA for either of these two wildly independent and caring characters their back and forth dynamic and the intense chemistry is oh so good! The dual narration on this audio is perfect. While I loved that this book traverses a time span, it's also the thing I felt could have been done better - initially the storyline flowed but then seemed to jump and then jump again - but really because you knew the characters from the start you knew why they reacted as they did...while I've read (and listened) to several of Jacob's books already - it makes me want to read/listen to them all over again!

This book was given to me for free at my request and I voluntarily provided this review.

This was a good book that introduced the reader to alot of the characters you can meet in the upcoming books. I liked Meg but she was always worried about breaking the rules and letting others treat her terribly which got a little frustrating and then there was Hunter who I liked and thought would help Meg loosen up and he did but his need for revenge led him down a path that went to far and I am glad with Megs decision for now. I find the storyline with all of these brothers a little far fetched, theres just too many. There were many fun, cute moments and some hot, sexy moments but there was way too many sex scenes, I would have rather gotten to know each of them better or them doing other fun things together. I am curious how the other books about all of these brothers will be and of course I want to read more on this couple after he has learned his lesson.

First of all this is NOT a short story this is a novella reaching into full blown book. But I was okay with that. Having started this series out of order I had NO idea what had happened between Meg and Hunter. I almost liked the mystery and was going to WAIT to read the prequel once I discovered it but curiosity got the best of me.

This was a completely different Meg than I was introduced to. This Meg is so innocent, soft, and raw. Hunter is an arrogant jack hole who can crawl in a hole and die. What he did would have me on edge and out to destroy him too.

I don't' want to drop spoilers but if you too are reading out of series and at any point you thought, wow Meg is really acting like a crazy bitch, just know that he deserves it and after reading this, you will want her to up her level of petties by a million.

I love that their story spans years because there are several other couples who are complicated and can relate. IF you have never read a book in this series, I would recommend starting with this one and going in order.

I liked this story a lot. It was entertaining and enjoyable with a few exceptions. The characters were interesting and likable for the most part. Meg and Hunter were absolutely perfect for each other. Unfortunately, they both had some issues to deal with. Hunter was doing something shady to help his family but it involved another woman which was a big deal for Meg. Meg had every right to be upset with Hunter. I wanted them to sit down and talk it out but that didn’t happen. As much as I loved Hunter and Meg together, I felt that they needed to move on if they weren’t going to hash it out. This was an amazing introduction to Meg and Hunter as well as some of the rest of the Svensson’s. I recommend reading this book. Or listening to the audiobook. The narrators did a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life. The male narrator can read to me anytime! Hubba hubba!

A funny, romantic read. The story flows well and it will have you laughing, and reading till the end to see what happens next with Meghan and Hunter. I can't wait to see what happens next with the Svensson brothers, all of them! Meghan is a lawyer trying to make it and get off probation and become an associate. She plays be the rules. She is getting her lunch when someone butts in and her day gets worse when she walks into the boardroom to see him Hunter the guys who stole her sandwich and left her with some peonies. He breaks all the rules. Once look at Meghan and Hunter is hooked. Will they be able to get past everything and have their happily ever after. A great read.

I knew this was a prequel non-standalone going in so it was much longer than I expected. The meet-cute was great but it seemed to go from rom-com to almost farcical for me. My lower than usual rating was for the lack of explanation for several plot lines - how did Walter steal Hunter’s business? What’s with her roommate Kate’s relationship with her father - hates him then doesn’t hate him I think? Also for the utterly unbelievable fact central to the plot line that opposing counsel in a large divorce would be dating each other without one of them needing to recuse themselves quickly.
Not sure if I want to continue the rest but it’s a maybe.

This is a perfectly fine novella to lead up to the conclusion which didn't last for almost three years. This author is a genius. She made readers wait nearly three years to get to the conclusion of this story by making them read a bunch of other novels featuring 47,000 other family members. I can't hate on that tactic.

I will say this book is the start of the terrible puns and innuendos and some really cringey dialogue, but by now I'm used to this style. That being said, I can't rate these books higher than a 3, since they're all basically the same with the names changed and sex scene adjectives swapped around.

Meghan is trying hard to become an associate with the legal firm where she is employed. Hunter is trying to right a wrong done to his family. But he has secrets and responsibilities that he is not prepared to disclose yet. Meg just wants a man who will love her and spoil her with flowers, and he certainly does that - but is there a nefarious motive behind it all? A cliff hanger ending, and I cant wait to read more!

All of this time, and after all of these books, I had gone not knowing what started all the animosity between Hunter and Meg. Now that I’ve come back to where it all started, the anger and Meg’s hatred begin to make so much more sense. I’m actually quite glad I didn’t read this until the point where the rest of their story is about to become available. I think I would have been a ravening beast if I’d had to wait the full duration to know how it’s going to turn out.

I discovered this book after I'd already started reading the series So I knew before beginning this one that it would end in a cliffhanger. It definitely helps explain the past history between Hunter and Meg, and why they're so hostile towards each other. For example, only this book shares the fact that Meg had been a part of the legal field in Manhattan at one time. FYI: the conclusion of Meg and Hunter's story doesn't come until book 7 of the series, but along the way, interwoven in the other brothers' stories , the two of them play a prominent role.

I absolutely love anything that Alina Jacobs writes. This is the beginning of the Harrogate Svensson crew. It ends on a cliff hanger.
Hunter is a lawyer by trade. He and his brothers were raised in a polygamist cult. They escaped and now do what they can to take care of their brothers and there are a ton of them.
They will lie, and scheme to get things going their way.
When he meets Meg he thinks he has found the one. She is a rule follower. Everything is going good for them until it’s not.
You will meet a lot of characters with crazy antics along the way.

A Strong Prequel...
After his Peonies by author Alina Jacobs is a perfect prequel. It draws you in by introducing you to some unusual characters that all work well together. Then you become mesmerized with the storyline until you reach chapter thirty-three then BAM!
Definitely recommending this book for your reading enjoyment and pleasure. And, am looking forward to book one.
I am leaving this review for your consideration. Peace.

I have to give this 5 Stars because I really enjoyed this book, loved all the characters and can’t wait to read more about the brothers, thought the storyline was great what I didn’t like! That was SO naughty! Really slap your wrist! A whole book and then that cliffhanger of an ending!!! OMG! Hen are we even going to get their ending??? Hope it’s not too long, because I don’t want to lose the momentum with this story!

Still 5 stars for me though 😉😁

What a refreshing change of writing style and pacing after coming off of the Holbrook series!

I loved the flirty banter between Meghan and Hunter!

After the Holbrook series, I opted to go the chronological route through the author’s catalog of books (even though I’ve already read a few of the holiday themed ones last winter). As such I’m on the Frost brothers book 1 next but I can’t wait to see what happens with Meghan and Hunter down the line!

Oh boy. I need to stop reading from this author. The other one I DNF’d.

There were serious issues with the chronology both in the bedroom and outside of the bedroom. An editor would’ve helped quite a bit. I didn’t really like any of the characters (there were only a few I was supposed to like and even those weren’t great.) There are too many characters also.

As a cherry on top, this book doesn’t have an ending. The romance doesn’t wrap up and it ends in the third act fight.

No! Say it isn’t so.
I feel a little betrayed by this book. I absolutely hate cliffhangers and I should have seen this one coming because I have been reading the books at random and not in order, but it still is painful that I have to wait to see these two get their HEA. I love them together and the way they brought humor and joy to each other’s lives. The author did a fantastic job with the story and I can only hope that we don’t have to wait too long to see the rest of their story.

I read this book for an honest review and I can just say it's ok. I feel there was a lot going on and at times I struggled to keep the stories straight. The general topic of the story was really good I just feel there were to many side stories that it got confusing at times. I am excited to read the next book to see how the story continues.

Damn - a cliffhanger. This story is about Meghan and Hunter. She is a fully qualified lawyer but is working as an intern at a terrible company. Hunter is the eldest of a lot of brothers - mostly half-brothers. They were all raised in a cult but now Hunter has to look after them all - and there is a LOT. Loved this story but dang and blast it with the cliffhanger. I want the next book now!
