Equip your students to excel on the current AP United States History Exam. This new edition is correlated to the 2019 course exam description framework in the areas of historical thinking skills, reasoning processes, themes, and content. The book is divided into nine units following chronological periods, mirroring the most current AP U.S. History framework. Featuring eight historical themes that address broad recurring patterns and topics in U.S. history, helping students connect historical developments in different times and places. Updates put recent political events in context, including events since 2016. This edition also includes more short-answer questions that use secondary sources, matching a change to the 2020 exam. Chapters conclude with a thematically organized list of key terms, people, and events for comprehensive review. The Historical Perspectives features address how historians have interpreted historical events in diverse ways. Each Think As a Historian feature focuses on one of the historical thinking skills or reasoning skills tested on the AP exam.
John J. Newman combines over forty years of genealogical experience with his position as Director , Information Management Services, Indiana Supreme Court. As a family historian he has an appreciation for what information genealogists seek; as an archivist he knows that the more thoroughly one understands public records, the more successful research can be.
The author is a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and holds a master's degree in American History from Indiana University. After teaching on the high school level for seven years, he joined the staff of the Indiana State Library in 1970. That fall he was appointed Indiana State Archivist, a position he held until transferring to the Indiana Supreme Court in 1986."-- from back cover of American Naturalization Records, 1790-1990.
The day has come when I finally finished this textbook and I feel as though I have been in this class for 20 years, not just 9 months. You know how disappointing it’s going to be if I fail the AP test after forcing myself to read every single chapter?!
Update: I just took the AP test this morning and decided that I will rate this book based on my score.
Update: I forgot to edit my review earlier but the book has now been given a star rating based on my score.
I now join the legions of APUSH students who gratefully retire this book to the darkest corner of the bookshelf—thank you for the trauma and the 5 (🤞🏽🤞🏽).
This book was so hard to get into… it kept on jumping around storylines. At the points when I became extremely invested within the lives of individuals such as Christopher Columbus, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, Henry Clay (how many compromises did this guy make?), Daniel Boone, Andrew Jackson, Andrew Carnegie, FDR, etc… new characters were introduced (the audacity 🙄). Not to mention the fact that this book seemed really focused on the United States and not other countries 🤷♀️. The author also seemed to have a really monotone writing style which I did not appreciate. Overall, would not recommend.
I FINALLY FINISHED and I am so happy. I feel a little silly counting this, but it’s the only textbook I’ve read front to back, and I need to write a review! Probably my favorite textbook ever! So clear and thorough. Just reading through it is enough to study for any test. It made history enjoyable. Definitely recommend. :))
I read every page of this monstrous book to help develop my understanding of the history of the United States. Reading this book is very beneficial if one is taking a U.S. history class and one's knowledge of America. The AMSCO book contains a lot of information but every sentence helps form one's understanding and there are no wasted sentences that do not matter. Reading this book while taking A.P. U.S. History helped me so much because if I missed a day in class, or I did not understand something, this book by John J. Newman provided me with the information to excel in my course. The AMSCO book is very useful even if your are not APUSH. The book is also enjoyable if you are a history lover like me and just enjoy obtaining knowledge about our past. Regardless if you are in a history class or not, I highly recommend reading this book to every American, as it contains every piece of our history as a nation, and how far we have come. Without this amazing book, I would not have been able to keep my grades as high as they are as well as have the understanding I do of our nation. READ IT!!
And now we wait for July… lowkey I think it went well!! APUSH, you were the biggest labor of love and hatred of my year. And now it’s just over- what will I do with all of this free time?
