I have exciting news! With the permission of the author, I may tell you that there will be a fifth book in the Don't… series. Fucking awesome, isn't it?
Anyhoo, now that the air has been cleared, let me get back to Backlash, the fourth installment in Jack L. Pyke's Don't… series.
First things first, it is imperative that you read the books in order. Backlash is told from Gray Raoul's POV. And while we're on book #4 already, all three main characters (Jack, Jan and Gray) are still reeling in the aftermath of what happened in book #2 Antidote that contained Jack and Jan's brutal psychological reconditioning. Things aren't back to normal in Backlash, not by a long shot, but we see them make small steps in the right direction. In Antidote, readers had to witness Jack and Jan's heinous and unspeakable trauma, while Gray had been practically condemned to inactivity. Well, he did his very best to act, yet it was too late to prevent Jack and Jan's awful ordeal. Now, having seeked and still seeking justice and revenge for those he loves dearly has taken its toll; physically and mentally, that is. Gray is just trying to hide it as best he can.
In the wake of those traumatic events, Jack and Jan have experienced intense psychological care. But what about Gray? Not having been harmed physically like his lovers, he surely must easily cope on his own. He, a strong, confident and controlled Dom, solid as a rock, doesn't need anyone to help him get through this nightmare. Or does he? While Gray is still dealing with Jack and Jan's case, someone is playing a dangerous and manipulative game of their own. And there are times when a little support from friends is very much appreciated. Trace, Gabe and Dare from Lynn Kelling's Deliver Us series are more than willing to lend a helping hand.

I was so bloody happy when I knew that Jack would write another book, told from Gray Raoul's POV. I was like, 'It's about damn time!' I always had a very soft spot for Gray. No, scratch that. He's been my favorite character of the series from the beginning, and I knew that I would have to allocate a place of my heart. For him. Just for Gray. I'm still miffed that the book title had to be changed from Gray to Backlash because this book was his. His to tell, his to own. I'm aware of the circumstances that led to said change which gives me even more reason to dislike a specific book. Anyway, I try not to be too upset about it. I guess I will just have to internalize Backlash with Gray. In my mind, it stays Gray because Gray matters. So fucking much.
“Certificates,” said Gray, shifting gear. “I get them for advanced MI5 driving courses.”
“They do refresher courses?”
“Continuously.”
“Good,” said Jack, “because if you get any closer to that car in front, the driver’ll be sticking up a sign asking you to climb up through the back window and give him head before you fuck him up the ass, is all.”

The infamous … (ellipsis)
The overuse of ellipsis is a nuisance, at least to me. I get it. I know that there are situations where it feels natural - even unavoidable - to make use of those three dots. On the other hand, it can interfere with the reading flow.
Personally, I think that a good editor should take care of that problem because it can affect a great story negatively. Or, the other way around, a good editor can make a great story even better. These days I refuse to give a book five stars when I spot that kind of annoying 'side effect'. Well, since I've been reading an ARC, here's hoping that the editing team will be redacting the story again.
Aside from my issues, there was quite a lot to enjoy and love about Backlash. It goes without saying that Jack is still casually and unapologetically dropping his f-bombs. Someone told me that swearing is an acquired taste. I really don't like a huge amount of f-bombs in my books, but I also know that swearing is an integral part of Jack's personality. I'd go so far and say that he loves riling people with his filthy language. Everything's fucking peachy, right? Wherever Jack is, you can be sure that Martin isn't far away either and ready to leave his shady corner.
I devoured Gray's POV because I craved to be in his head. I got to know him better; he made an effort to open up about his childhood, his background. And what had been clear before already was even more obvious in Backlash: Gray really does care about Jack and Jan very much. He loves them deeply and would do everything to protect them. Some parts were highly emotional and tore at my heart. I really dug that scene around the 30% mark. It's proof that such an erotically-charged and off-the-charts steamy scene can be intensely beautiful and genuine in spite of it being intentionally "flawed". I truly wish more authors would have the courage to pursue that path and would come off that lane of fast sex and magic cocks that heal everything in no time flat.
“You lay there by me when I was so fucking scared of falling, and you eased life by saying submission wasn’t defined by the weight of the chains that held the sub down, or the control of the Dom above him.”
A tug came at Gray’s shirt, then stomach muscle contracted as Jack brushed the thin line of hair running navel to pubic hairline.
“You said the art of submission, the beauty of submission, it came from the sub himself, how he could sub with no chains present.” A kiss brushed Gray’s lips and it took all of Gray’s willpower not to groan into it.
“And take away the chains,” Jack mumbled as Gray let his breathing match the slow stroke that came above his pubic hairline, “would you still lie beneath me?” added Jack. “It’s what you said, remember?”
“You can’t stop someone loving you, Jack, but you can help when they’re hurting because of it. You wanted to face him? You do so now when he’s ready, not you. Please. He’s being stripped to the core and is too afraid to speak.”
The author handled the entire buildup very well. There is so much meat to the bone here. Plenty of riveting storyline that found its climax during the final 20% and only few sex scenes. Very few, that is. But those smexy times that are there, are panty-melting hot and very well written. Also, there is plenty of tenderness exchanged between the guys and the author provided all-around thoughtfulness throughout the entire story. If you expected that this trio would be back to hardcore sex and BDSM, then I suggest you think again.
I've heard that Trace, Gabe and Dare are pretty hardcore themselves, but none of that was displayed this time around which suited me just fine. The purpose of the guys from Lynn Kelling's Deliver Us series was more in the vein of lending emotional and psychological support. I'm incredibly relieved to have witnessed that there is no easy cure for either of the main characters, particularly not for Jack and Martin. Sure, they are trying to get their footing while at the same time they are still struggling. Fear, frustration and pain have become their unsolicited mate. Yet we know that their final destination can only be back to a normalized life. Back to unconditional trust and drawing breath from each other, while at the same time trying to find healthy coping mechanisms in order to deal with their fears. Everything has to be earned, though.

*Not a stand-alone book
This is the kind of book I want to read. The kind of book I seek out. Because it’s bigger, deeper, more complex. Sink in, hold on, and tighten your gut because it’s all coming at you. Hard. No fluff. Even the tenderness is difficult. Real. You want a peek at BDSM? TheN you get this series. By this author. And you are immersed. Times ten. Because this isn’t just a kinky little whip-you-until-you-love-me story. No. This is a freaking psychological head fuck with all the trimmings. And because of that you get to see how a Master/sub/vanilla relationship can be the most reasonable way to approach a bond. Tall order for a little MM Romance, hmm?
THE STORY
A culmination. But hard earned. Have you been paying attention? I mean really paying attention? I’ll bet you thought you knew things. I’ll bet you thought you knew where this was going. You didn’t. At least I didn’t. I didn’t see the angles, twists and plunges. Pyke takes her
sweet time getting you there. The first several chapters are nothing but pure emotional anguish merged with tender, raw beauty. Deep. Painful. Love.
Guilt.
Remorse.
And revelation.
Puzzle pieces fit. Martin emerges. Gray has no choice. Shit. Shit. Shit. And Jan is…just so fucked.
I’d say get yourself in a good emotional place before delving into this one, because it is going to tear at you. The more you’ve fallen for these men, the more you’re going to fall for in this book.
THE CHARACTERS
Gray Raoul – Finally we get to see the man behind all the composure. You think you want to know. But do you? The weight on him is crushing.
Jack Harrison – His whole life he’s been fucked with. And still he gives.
Martin – How in the hell can I love Martin?
Jan Richards – Yeah. I get Jan.
“Nobody is here for me.”
THE WRITING
Pyke’s writing is strong. Her economy of words, as it were, is what makes reading her both stunning and challenging. But in this book it is the storytelling that trumps that writing skill. Looking back at my reviews on the earlier books I see I was flailing at times, but I realize now she had me in her control all along. I am simply hers to dominate.

So here we finally get inside Gray’s head. It took me a bit of time to warm up to Gray after Don't..., but I did come to appreciate his character, flaws and all. Here we finally get to see inside Gray as the man in love, not just the badass MI5 director and MC Dom; Gray reeling from his failure to be there and to protect Jan and Jack; Gray continuing to seek out those who funded the abduction and continuing to take his vengeance on those who have already been caught.
Gray is spiraling. The abduction and the five months Jack was in the psych unit took its toll emotionally and physically. Jan is withdrawing into himself and is changing before their eyes. Jack is trying to hold everyone together but barely has a hold on himself, trying to adjust to being out of the psych ward. Jack is pushing Gray to Dom him again, while Gray is fighting his desire to do just that. Jack and Jan are still having trouble reconnecting and then … well then there is Martin. It seems it’s always one step forward then two steps back. Now someone else is upping their threats against Jack and Jan and Gray is running out of time.
With so much having gone on, it’s hard to believe that only one year has passed in the timeline of the story. To me, this installment, more than any of the others was about the love story and the cementing of the three of them with complete respect for not just the threesome, but the individual relationship dynamics of the pairs as well. That doesn’t mean that Jack L. Pyke is going soft on us though! You know nothing is easy in this series. As much as the men care for each other, it’s so hard for them to get back on track. The intimacies are there, subconsciously coming out when it’s too painful to show during the light of day; the pet names, Jan and Jack moving to each other in their sleep and the fierce protectiveness they all feel for each other.
Jack L. Pyke isn’t one to hold back whether it is the emotional scars, the physical pain or just the pain of not knowing where you stand with the people around you. Jan goes through a lot in this story. I have loved Jan from the start. He is a quieter character and doesn’t get the spotlight and the love that Jack and Gray do from many of the fans, but he is a complex and strong man in his own right. It’s no wonder he is losing it here, doubting his place in Gray’s life, having been left on his own to deal with things when Jack was committed and still recovering from the trauma of his abduction and his actions afterwards.
When Gray realizes he needs help, he brings over his old friend Trace along with Gabe and Darrek (Lynn Kelling’s men from the Deliver Us series). Trace knows how to ground Gray and is not afraid to call him out, while Darrek brings some comfort for Jan, having been a “vanilla outsider” as well. It is Gabe, however, who has my heart with the scene he shares with Jack at a critical moment in Jack and Gray’s relationship. Gabe is no stranger to abuse and he “Doms” Jack perfectly in an effort to remind him what the BDSM relationship with Gray is really all about.
While Jack’s life was laid bare in the previous installments, here we get a deeper look into Jan and Gray’s past and families. There are a lot of secrets that come out in this installment and some interesting connections are made, some of which had me shaking my head in amazement of how the author lined them all up. Ultimately with the threats to Jack and Jan, there is no choice but to bring Martin in even knowing that the consequences could be devastating. As much of a bastard Martin is, he definitely brings an interesting turn whenever he is on the page.
Though there is a lot of darkness surrounding the men there are still some happy moments and dare I say, some incredibly romantic ones. I love that they all have their pet names for each other and they are still using them, “things” is perhaps one of my favorite pet names ever. There is also Ed who is still such a thorn in Jack’s side and Jan’s mother’s turn sheds some light on just where all that quiet strength comes from.
The relationships take a huge step forward and there is a realization that Martin is not just a nuisance to be avoided and tamed, but a part of the relationship that also needs time to heal. Let me just say, my jaw dropped at the end of the book. I was sad and surprised (though I did manage a laugh as well), but it left me with hope – and not just the hope that Jack L. Pyke is furiously writing book 5 as we speak -- but the hope that these men have finally found the trust and comfort with each other that they need to move forward and become whole again.

So here we finally get inside Gray’s head. It took me a bit of time to warm up to Gray after Don't..., but I did come to appreciate his character, flaws and all. Here we finally get to see inside Gray as the man in love, not just the badass MI5 director and MC Dom; Gray reeling from his failure to be there and to protect Jan and Jack; Gray continuing to seek out those who funded the abduction and continuing to take his vengeance on those who have already been caught.
Gray is spiraling. The abduction and the five months Jack was in the psych unit took its toll emotionally and physically. Jan is withdrawing into himself and is changing before their eyes. Jack is trying to hold everyone together but barely has a hold on himself, trying to adjust to being out of the psych ward. Jack is pushing Gray to Dom him again, while Gray is fighting his desire to do just that. Jack and Jan are still having trouble reconnecting and then … well then there is Martin. It seems it’s always one step forward then two steps back. Now someone else is upping their threats against Jack and Jan and Gray is running out of time.
With so much having gone on, it’s hard to believe that only one year has passed in the timeline of the story. To me, this installment, more than any of the others was about the love story and the cementing of the three of them with complete respect for not just the threesome, but the individual relationship dynamics of the pairs as well. That doesn’t mean that Jack L. Pyke is going soft on us though! You know nothing is easy in this series. As much as the men care for each other, it’s so hard for them to get back on track. The intimacies are there, subconsciously coming out when it’s too painful to show during the light of day; the pet names, Jan and Jack moving to each other in their sleep and the fierce protectiveness they all feel for each other.
Jack L. Pyke isn’t one to hold back whether it is the emotional scars, the physical pain or just the pain of not knowing where you stand with the people around you. Jan goes through a lot in this story. I have loved Jan from the start. He is a quieter character and doesn’t get the spotlight and the love that Jack and Gray do from many of the fans, but he is a complex and strong man in his own right. It’s no wonder he is losing it here, doubting his place in Gray’s life, having been left on his own to deal with things when Jack was committed and still recovering from the trauma of his abduction and his actions afterwards.
When Gray realizes he needs help, he brings over his old friend Trace along with Gabe and Darrek (Lynn Kelling’s men from the Deliver Us series). Trace knows how to ground Gray and is not afraid to call him out, while Darrek brings some comfort for Jan, having been a “vanilla outsider” as well. It is Gabe, however, who has my heart with the scene he shares with Jack at a critical moment in Jack and Gray’s relationship. Gabe is no stranger to abuse and he “Doms” Jack perfectly in an effort to remind him what the BDSM relationship with Gray is really all about.
While Jack’s life was laid bare in the previous installments, here we get a deeper look into Jan and Gray’s past and families. There are a lot of secrets that come out in this installment and some interesting connections are made, some of which had me shaking my head in amazement of how the author lined them all up. Ultimately with the threats to Jack and Jan, there is no choice but to bring Martin in even knowing that the consequences could be devastating. As much of a bastard Martin is, he definitely brings an interesting turn whenever he is on the page.
Though there is a lot of darkness surrounding the men there are still some happy moments and dare I say, some incredibly romantic ones. I love that they all have their pet names for each other and they are still using them, “things” is perhaps one of my favorite pet names ever. There is also Ed who is still such a thorn in Jack’s side and Jan’s mother’s turn sheds some light on just where all that quiet strength comes from.
The relationships take a huge step forward and there is a realization that Martin is not just a nuisance to be avoided and tamed, but a part of the relationship that also needs time to heal. Let me just say, my jaw dropped at the end of the book. I was sad and surprised (though I did manage a laugh as well), but it left me with hope – and not just the hope that Jack L. Pyke is furiously writing book 5 as we speak -- but the hope that these men have finally found the trust and comfort with each other that they need to move forward and become whole again.

It’s been a month since Jack was released from the hospital. This book starts with everyone still trying to heal from the abduction and rape. It seems Jack is coping better than Jan. Gray is still trying to find the funder. He’s determined and will do whatever it takes to protect what’s his.
Jack only thought he was a bastard. Elena knew he was. Now.
This book doesn’t have much in the way of sex. There are a couple scenes, but nothing like “Don’t”. There is wonderful intimacy here while they are trying to be able to finally communicate what’s been in their hearts for a long time. Sometimes poetic, other times not so much.
You said you needed me to trust you mukka…mostly because you were lost in an apology for already holding me when I wasn’t there, for saying you’d loved me when I wasn’t there to hear it.
Somewhere along the line, I fell in love with you, you asshole.
Trace, Gabe, and Dare come to England to assist. I was glad to see them, but honestly, besides Gabe, I didn’t feel like their characters did much.
Ed, the butler grandfather, is still here giving Jack the business.
Manners. Please teach Jack some where it doesn’t involve any morphological inventiveness surrounding the words ‘fuck’ and ‘you’.
The story was very involved. There were several names and events I found myself going back to previous books to refresh my memory.

January 27, 2016How am I supposed to review this book when I can’t get my thoughts straight? When I can’t stop crying?
I thought I wanted Gray’s POV and I did, but oh it hurt me so much and you know what? It’s the best kind of hurt.
First, this book CAN NOT be read as a stand alone, it must be read with the series and in order.
That being said, this takes us into Gray’s head and all that this man is. All that he loves. All who he holds close and all that he keeps inside. OMG! Gray just about killed me with his need to take care of those he loves and take care of those who hurt the ones he loves, but good lord, mukka… who will take care of you?
This series, it is gorgeous and brutal but I love being hurt by it. The triad of Jack, Gray and Jan is so beautiful and I love how their strengths are coming forward and presenting themselves as strongholds to this relationship. The respect these men have for one another, it’s exquisite.
Jan, he has taken on so much and we know he loves the bones off Jack and Gray but he has internalized so much from the rape and torture he and Jack endured. He’s not handling it well and the way he is handling it, shocked me. There were a few things that shocked me about Jan with this but none of it was bad. Just a shock and awe of the vanilla man with soft brown eyes and a sacred love for two kinky men.
Jack, he is trying so hard to deal – leaving the MC, handling Ed, wanting to be handled by Jack and being close again to his soft lad… you kill me, stunner over and over again. I don’t think… I can’t… I mean… Jack leaves me speechless. He really does and while he never got in his head with Backlash, we get so much of him and the lengths he will go to, the boundaries he will push for his loves. I know you don’t do casual Jack, but dammit, I need a hug.
Gray, yeah I still love the bastard and being inside his head was so overwhelmingly emotional. I cried so much through this book and I’m still crying as I attempt to write this. Gray, he does so much and he is so much to everyone but he needs help and that help, comes from across the pond with Trace, Gabe and Dare.
I admit to not reading Ms. Kelling’s series and properly meeting these three men, but I can assure you, that will soon be rectified. I adored Trace and the way he takes care of Gray even via text message. He is there for Gray and will drop everything to help him and then there is Gabe and Dare. OMG! Those two! I need their story STAT (trust that I broke my no book buying mandate and just bought Deliver Us) because, because… they are beautiful.
These books, this series and its mystery are so well done. Pyke knows how to tear you down, tear her characters down and build everyone back together. There is so much hurt and pain revealed in this, so many new WTAF? moments and there are still secrets that need to be told, but Jack, Gray and Jan, they just work together to make it. Just to make it and to be together.
I am an emotional reader and this book tore my heart out. It’s heavy, that’s a given with the series but there are some lighter moments that made me smile but the heart of this series, it really is the love and respect between Jack, Gray and Jan. Oh and holy hell are there some moments that sat me on my ass and made me sob at my desk while I read this. The endearments alone slowly gut me and my entrails are strewn across the room as I think about them as proof.
I have so many highlights that I could share in this review but after looking them over, they are mine right now and I am not ready to share them. I can’t. Sorry.
Now, the blurb does include Martin and I’m kinda digging him now. I mean, see him through Gray’s eyes and you get him, to a point. But all that happens with Martin, all that happens for Gray to nail the bastards that touched what’s his… it’s a roller coaster of intrigue and emotions that was amazing. Truly amazing and that end?

Tell me to run the fuck away and take you and Jan with me. You’re all that matter to me.” “No we’re not, mukka.” Jack twisted his head to look at Jan and Jan shifted, taking a step forward, but Jack shook his head, keeping him there in someone’s hold for now. “Press play.” He looked back. “Just please press fucking play and stop it for us.”

This is book four in the Don't... Series and this series must be read in order. It picks up right after book three, Breakdown, with Jack, Gray, and Jan trying to piece their lives back together and let me tell you Jack L Pyke has written an amazing series - 5 stars all the way across. These books draw you in like nothing you have read before, they grab your attention and then you are thrown into a world of Secrecy, Sex, BDSM, Deceit, Maddening Truths, Characters that will blow your mind, Characters that will make you cry, Characters that will make you mad - a world you never want to end! All I can say is if you have not read the Don't... Series ...you are missing out on a masterpiece. Then, let's not forget this story is connected to an entire other series, the plots flow from book to book without missing a beat and even when a scene goes back in time ... The author writes it in such a way you are always on track, you just may be hella shocked when she unveils her latest twist. When I say twist, Jack L Pyke should design the worlds best roller coaster cause she can twist and turn a plot unlike any other and then bring it all home with a reveal that leaves you breathless.
In this book we get to see a lot more of Gray, see a broken side of Jan, and of course we get Jack who continues to break my heart as he only wants to have a normal life with his two men, his Dom and his Jan ...his Mukka and his Soft souled love...will he get it? What happens when the Funder is finally revealed, when Martin is purposely sought out ... Will all of our guys make it to the end of the story?

A review by The Blogger Girls.
You absolutely have to read this series from the beginning. If you’ve made it this far, you’ve been yearning for this installment for as long as the rest of us Don’t addicts. This is Master Gray’s book, or told from his POV. These guys have been through hell and back more than once, and time hasn’t quite healed any of them yet. They continue to struggle with everything that has happened and shaped their current relationship. I have no idea how to put into words how much I love this series. Just as the Master Subs and other characters’ minds are manipulated (in both good and evil ways), so too was mine. That is one of the things I love most about this series. It is so in-depth and complicated, yet easy (mostly) to follow. It made me catch my breath over and over, and for a book to grab my emotions in such a way makes it a clear winner in my book.
Just as with the previous installments, we see the guys trying to cope, each in their own way, while trying to help the others. While they all play extremely important roles in this relationship, Gray has always remained the center of this triad for me. He is the Master after all. I don’t believe I have ever come across such complex characters in all my reading. We learn more than we ever have about Gray’s past and what makes him tick, but I truly don’t believe we will ever fully understand every layer of him. Over the course of these stories, Gray’s motives may have seemed somewhat questionable, but I never once doubted his level of care and devotion to Jack, and even Jan for that matter.
Jack is a close second in my favorite character lineup. He is complex in such different ways than Gray, and I love every one of them. Dare I say, I even love Martin. He is my favorite “evil” character hands down. It seems as though the guys have found a way to sort of contain Martin, but it remains a fine line. When it is Martin who has the information needed, they must all go back on everything they’ve done up to this point in keeping him out of the picture and bring him front and center. It is through Martin that we learn even more about Gray, and I love how Gray handles the two, Jack/Martin. Gray really is a remarkable individual, and I fell even more in love with him in this segment.
Jan is my least favorite, but I concede he is a much needed partner in this group. He is the one who filled the gaps left by Gray which is exactly what Jack needed. He is the soft to Gray’s hard. I honestly kept waiting for the time when he would just give up on Jack and Gray and walk away. He isn’t of their world, and it shows more than once, but he is stronger than he appears, especially after all he’s been through. I definitely garnered new respect for Jan for not giving up.
I am not usually one for nicknames or overused terms of endearment in my stories. Never before have I actually longed for them as I do with this story. Every time Gray call Jack “stunner,” I got a little choked up. The same went for Jack calling Gray “mukkah” or “old mukkah.” Heck, even Martin calling Gray “Welsh” got to me and brought so many feelings back. Ms. Pyke writes with such intensity that I find myself overwhelmed by it at times, in a good way. I held my breath so many times, and just when I would catch it, it would happen all over again.
I was so excited to learn there is another book coming in this series after thinking this was the last one. These poor guys need a break, but I’m really glad they’ll be back. I tried to read slowly and savor it, really I did, but it was so hard to do.
I have to give a mention about the additional characters here. Poor straight Craig truly needs a raise, because whatever the MC is paying him, it cannot possibly be enough to justify all that he does for these guys. He is always there providing whatever care is needed, no matter what that entails, and it usually entails quite a lot. He was one of my favorite characters from Jack’s time at the ward, and he remains so now. It was also great to see Lynn Kelling’s characters from the Society of Masters joining the guys when they were needed. I immediately went on to read their stories after this to learn more about them and their connection to the MC and the trio as well. I definitely recommend you check them out.
So, this book (and the entire series) continues to hold the spot at the tippy top of my all-time favorite list. If you love things on the darker side, love watching your characters go through hell and fight their way back, love highly emotional and gut-wrenching stories, you should move this series right to the top of your list. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would not hesitate to do so.

I am used to picking up a book from Jack Pyke and mentally preparing myself for her unique brand of writing that in all honesty, is all consuming...and believe me, I have devoured each and every one her books, even though she twists a knife in my gut with words that cause me actual physical pain, truth I tell you, I’m left emotionally drained to the point of exhaustion, but at the same time exhilarated at the utter genius of her craft. She is without doubt the master of the ‘mind fuck’ and dark, erotic, psychological thriller within this genre and the Don’t series, is, in my humble opinion, an incredible example of how to get it right! She writes with purpose, intention, thought and delivery and never wastes words superfluously. She breathes life into a story and her characters with simple observations, yet so animated. Such a talent! I’m in awe of Jack L. Pyke and her literary talents.
I have been put through the wringer with these three boys in the series so far, to the point where even I was doubting they’d come out of it with all faculties intact, although some might say they were questionable to start with. As much as I love Jack Pyke’s usual roller coaster ride of a read, Backlash had to take time out for healing, which of course it does, but that’s not all, because it wouldn’t be a Jack Pyke novel if she didn’t throw in a few ‘WTF’ ‘Holy shit’ ‘I never saw that coming’ ...moments, as well as a few cleverly worked revelations that leave your head spinning. There is also some action, where the past yet again comes back to haunt them. Old friends are called on to draw strength and support from and Gray is still looking for closure on those responsible for hurting what’s his. But, to ensure their protection, reluctantly Martin needs to be called to action, and as evil as he is, I just love him!
I have always said that despite the punch to the solar plexus this series so often delivers this is above all else, an immensely powerful love story and Backlash continues in the same vein and this time had me hurting for all of them. I cried several times at their pain and the subtleties of tenderness and emotion played between them. It’s such an honest and unconditional love that is bone deep. The flesh of it may be ragged and torn and look beyond repair and the body itself may be infected by what they’ve been through… but the heart, my god the heart that’s shared by these three men still beats strong. Jack Pyke conveys this so well!

Each of them remaining private in their own pain, with the echoes of Jack and Jan’s time with Vince still reverberating around them, unable to dissipate, as they fight the demons that continue to claw at their nightmares and at a loss to know how to bridge the divide that’s growing between them. Jan, so fragile and withdrawn, mentally disconnecting himself from life in order to ease his pain. Jack still playing the lad with his cocky grin and quick wit. With him it’s what isn’t said that pulls on the heartstrings the most and without Gray’s controlled strength and focus and Jan’s stability and tender affection to ground him, his still shattered psych is volatile.
As we watch this fallout from Gray’s point of view we start to understand the guilt he carries and dare I say it, see his vulnerability and emotions laid bare. This once stoically guarded man is no longer objective and his actions now questionable, even doubting himself for fear of failing those he loves once again, wavering and unsure of how to move forward, how to heal and rebuild their connection and hold onto their sanity. It’s a heart-breaking mess of emotions and Gray can’t see the wood for the trees. Which is when he calls on his oldest and dearest friend and the person he trusts the most to help him… Trace. Another fabulous character along with Gabe and Dare from Lynn Kelling’s Deliver Us series, who bring much needed perspective and objectivity, as well as a little fun and banter to lighten the melancholy.

But if I have one criticism with Backlash, I felt the beginning and some minor editing issues weren’t as tight as I’m used to, but having said that, it soon moved onto familiar territory and the ending was utter perfection, absolutely brilliant! Just fucking peachy! Now I need book #5 as I’m missing them already.
The Don’t… series is an outstanding work of fiction, penned by an incredibly talented author with characters that are guaranteed to steal your heart and soul… read it!

I really really wish I could give this book 10 stars....I mean wow......I was dreading this book before going in and I usually wait a few weeks after release for books like this before I start but I wanted to get right to it.....This takes us to the after effects of both Antidote and Breakdown...Jack and Jan recovering from their horrible ordeal at the hands of Vince....but in this one we find that Gray was really just as badly affected by what happened to his sub and his lover......Jan goes through a terrible time in this one...worse than Jack I think in a way....He's just not the Jan that we all love and it's heartbreaking to see him going through this....But...Gray is there and so is Jack....but so is Martin...and we all know what that means....this is not going to be easy for Gray to sort out....He's lost...so he calls in his friends....Trace,My Gabe and Dare......they are there for back up and Gabe is there for Jack,Dare is there for Jan and Trace...oh Trace is there for Gray.....Watching Gray through this broke my heart....I actually cried for him...often.....It all comes down to wanting the man who organised Jack and Jan's ordeal....Do they get him though...Martin plays a big part in this and I found myself actually liking him....but I don't want Gray and Jan to lose Jack.....The ending nearly broke me...it's kind of a cliffhanger but not a biting your nails for the next book kind....it does actually make you smile and realise that maybe just maybe the boys are on the real road to recovery....an excellent book and an excellent addition to the Don't series x

I loved this dark and gritty series and I seriously hope we get another installment.
This book revolved around Gray and his POV of the story and situation. Poor Gray the protector, the lover and the ruthless vigilante who tried to avenge the torture and rape of his "things" Jack & Jan. His love was deep and he struggled to share this in words and stuck mainly to showing his love in actions. With the help of his US friends he was able to support and love Jan through his breakdown and claim Jack as his beloved sub. This book was intense and it was interesting to see Martin become more of a player - I was hoping we could conclude more with Jack but I sense Martin is becoming more of a fixture !

FINALLY Gray’s story! If you are a fan of the Don’t… series then you will realise how huge it is that we finally see how this man thinks and works. Take your seat and strap yourself in as this is one hell of a bumpy ride! BUT is this Gray’s story really or does it belong to Martin?
I went into Backlash excited, scared and absolutely convinced that it was the last book in this phenomenal series. Without giving too much away I can tell you that whilst reading it I was actually excited, often scared and by the time I got to the end I was straight on to the author to check that there would in fact be another book. She assured me there was another one to come and I stepped back from the ledge!
I’m not sure what to say about Jack L Pyke’s writing except that her mind must actually be a rather scary place. In Backlash she has brought together so many parts of the story, ones in which we would have never known held any relevance, and tied them all up to give us a very clever plot. I feel like I read the first three books partially blind, didn’t retain all of the important parts, and then had them all chucked back at me in this one. Honestly, the way it all comes together and is all intertwined is pure bloody genius!
It felt right to hear the story from Gray’s POV this time round. Here is a man that is used to being in charge. Here is a Master Dom that always takes control and looks after what is his. Here is a lover who keeps those most precious to him safe. Here is the man who lost everything, lived through his sub and lover being raped and walked away from the MC. Gray is a man haunted by his past, present and future and he’s not holding it together as much as you think.
Jack and Jan are still in full recovery mode at the start of Backlash and Gray is doing everything he can to support them, it’s difficult as both have such different needs, and Gray wants nothing more than to charge the world and make those responsible pay. Although they all struggle Jan is having a particularly hard time and the more he struggles the more all three of them spiral together. There is no right or wrong in this relationship but they are so fractured there is very little of their relationship left.
The plot is complicated and will keep you on your toes. SO many things factor in to where these men are today and every little one of them is significant. It also makes Gray’s plan for revenge much more difficult as they realise just how far reaching and how long this has been building up. Martin has a huge role, he is far more important to their relationship than anyone could have guessed, but he is also volatile as all hell and not easily handled. Can Gray control him if they set him free? Can Jan bare to be around him? Gray finally accepts he can’t do this on his own and receives help from Trace, Gabe and Dare. Ultimately the book stops with Jack, Jan and Gray as they fight for their lives and the safety of those around them but the other men provide a net and their help is invaluable.
I’m not saying anything else as I don’t want to give anything away. I had planned to add some quotes to this review but when I looked at everything I had highlighted when I finished there were just too many, I mean you can’t quote an entire book right? This story is dark and delicious and oddly intimate, it’s a love story – a brutal, consuming and stark love story and I would highly recommend the entire series.

There are honestly no words for Jack L. Pyke's brilliance! Being back with Gray, Jack, and Jan was like coming home to find I had the thrill of old friends dropping by for a visit - SO fucking good to see them again. If you're a fan of the Don't... series, this is a MUST read.. So, so good!

Phew. This one might be my favorite so far. I love the dynamics between all these men and some of these scenes are just amazing. I have to admit I love Martin as well. What a fuck. But damn. The interactions between him and Gray and now with Jan are fascinating. Can’t wait to hopefully learn more about Gray and Martin’s past together as well.

WOW !! I don't know where to begin with the review for this book. If you thought the first 3 were intense then get ready for the intensity level to be upped by 100000 !! I absolutely loved who the author pulled me in from the start, at times i wanted to do serious harm to Jack L Pyke for what Gray, Jan and Jack/Martin are put through too. But now i have the problem of waiting to see WTF happens next ?? I mean, it's not a HUGE cliffy but it's enough of one to have you waiting with baited breathe for the next installment !! Absolutely AMAZING !!

If you were ever in doubt that this series is ultimately a love story, this one...this one right here will show you.
I held off on this one. Feeling like I'd just run a marathon after the first three books, I was in a good place with these guys. I didn't want to "go there" again after what they'd been through. Not quite yet.
But it didn't take me long to get the itch. The need to find out. And it didn't disappoint.
Not one bit.
From the beginning this book felt like a series of moments. Hard, raw, subtle and intimate moments that prove the mettle of these men. And of Gray in particular.
He's been a mystery up till now. A ghost. An orchestrator in the shadows. Someone who can and does have the world on speed dial and is paid to be as deadly as they come.
Being inside his head is a revelation. His pain. His conflict. His control. His business dealings. And, finally, the depth of his love for his men.
He was everything.
Flayed to the core and hurting. He's had the weight of the world on his shoulders for so long, and we finally got to see it. Feel it. Ache from it.
As always, this author has slayed me. The details, the plot, the pacing. All perfect. Then there's her characters. A-freaking-mazing. Even when it's harder than it's ever been before, there's always an underlying kindness and unbreakable tether between these 3 men that just amazes me. And can I just say, I've even found a soft spot for Martin, and I didn't think that was even possible.

First let me say, I love this series. It is not a stand alone read. It is not a book or series to be rushed...too much will be missed and you will lose out on all the devious intricacies and mindfuckery that we readers get from Jack L. Pyke who is definitely in my top three most favourite authors.
The story continues, this time mainly from Gray's POV, though the POV does switch occasionally.
I'm not rewriting the story, but giving shots here...after the devastation of watching Jack's traumatic stress, along with his other lifelong mental health problems, implode last time, and at the end realising that Jan, who appears to be coping amazingly well considering their experiences, wasn't.
Here is Jan, in need, but not going to the right place for help.
And what's happened to Sam, our lovely young whelp.
Here is Jack making progress...or so it appears,
Or is it Martin, still in arrears.
Here is Raoul, 'Gray' the MI5 task force leader showing his stress and pain.
More of his story, is divulged...is he struggling to abstain?
Here are Lynn Kelling's devised characters, from her own series doth import,
Trace, Gabe, and Dare, appearing as most loyal and perceptive in cameo support.
Here are the webs the spider weaves,
The poking of baddies in order to peeve.
Here the intricacies of past affecting present, if you see,
If you don't then reread, till you find the stinging bee.
Here the links, to terror, crimes and murders most foul.
Here the deepest relationship, love, tearing its soul.
Here again, Martin, but where is dear sexy Jack?
Here again hints of lust in the sack

All part of this amazing story that our writer, Jack in her creative world she has built!

One or two niggles, some repetition of certain words and phrases should have been weeded out.
Oh, and i'm a North Wales gog...so my Welsh is better than Jack's. Or whoever, gave her that format/translation, as I'm sure they are Southerners! :))

However, at first, thinking this was the end, a couple of things affected me,
first I thought we the reader were left in the lurch, we needed to know more of Sam, his ordeal, and get to know the character we have got to like so...could have been more.
Now I hear there's another part to this series. There's enough threads left to tease us...like will we know more of Gray's relations? Will there be a HFN/HEA?
Then, the end of this I was 'Nooooo, Don't... not like that! Yes, I sort of like him...but prefer HIM and the threesome is in need. Heal them in this House our Jack has built...pretty please? xx

I always say I don’t know how Pyke could give you more but again in Backlash she seems to do just that, taking this thriller to an entirely new level.
Just like any good master of suspense Jack L. Pyke keeps you right on the edge of realization. As with any good thriller the finger is pointed here and then there as she adds one more twist, one more character flaw, until you just can’t take the itching in the back of your brain any longer.
The explosive ending of Backlash will leave you crying and at the same time fist pumping and asking yourself why you are laughing.

For someone who's not a huge fan of hardcore BDSM or D/s literature I absolutely LOVE this series. It is so very dark but fascinating at the same time. The Don't series is fantastic with incredible characters and especially character development. I warn you though that one book in the series comes with chronic trigger warnings but it's paramount for the intensity of how it makes this entire series work.
It's also important to point out that this series has another side to it. As Jack's books are set in the UK, Lynne Kelling's intertwined series with cross over character is set in the US and are a must read too. Together they create a very intense environment but at the same time complement each other beautifully.
I can't wait for the next book, I LOVE JAN, he is by far my fav character out of both series

I loved this. Everybody's pain was so raw, and each word and touch exchanged between the guys was so emotionally charged. I found myself reading very, very slowly - both so I could capture every nuance, but also because it's a complex read that takes time to process. I'm not even sure I caught half of the MI5-MI6-et al. secret agent stuff (which is my terrible characterization of what was a well-thought out plot.) It's apparent that this is not the end of the road for this series, and that's good news.

oh it was so good I hated to finish it. I love those characters and this book being from Gray's POV was so intense and fascinating. He's just an amazing character, to get his perspective and hear his voice was incredible. It was beautifully written and the pacing was perfect.
I loved this series (and there better be a book 5!) and it will be on my shelf of 'must re-reads'.

Seriously this book and this series is a complete mindf#ck!!!! You will be twisted and turned in so many directions, you won't believe what's going to happen one minute!!! And while you are trying to figure those out, you'll be on an emotional journey because this book will punch you in the gut. I won't give a lot away with this review because, honestly I don't want to give anything away. I will say that if you like your books twisted, dark and disturbing then these are definitely the books for you!!! I mean the word obsessed doesn't even begin to cover how I feel!

I fell into the pages connecting with Gray, Jack and Jan .
It's a very intense read I sat riveted not wanting to miss any words.
Easy flowing book with much detail in all areas .
It took me to places that I have never been to but knew existed and I could visualise all that was written.
You get to know more about these three men and the intense love they have for one another , they have been through so much could they endure anymore ?
These three men have a place in my heart even Martin .
So glad I was recommended these books by this outstanding author .

This book like the others was absolutely amazing! I love this series and don't even know how to review this one without giving away all the juicy details. The good news is this story wraps up a lot of loose ends. The bad news is that you are left with wanting more, more, more!

I loved Gray's book! I hope future books for this series will keep letting the readers see his POV. Martin is very interesting and I would love to see more of him, too. The ending of this book was very satisfying, with it wrapping up what happened with Jack and Jan's abductors. I hope that Gray will work out his relationship with his father soon. Maybe Greg and Kate could fall in love?

I LOVE Jan, Jack and Gray. But IDGAF anymore about the mystery/thriller part of this story. It just turned too convoluted and in an effort to tie it all back together it became improbable.
And if in the 5th book Martin fucks up with Gray's son in anyway I am going to be livid.

I am not one to write reviews about books unless they move me beyond words.This book is amazing.Infact the whole series is one of the best in mm romance books because of its unique storyline and original characters.I don't want this series to end.Highly recommended!!!
