Cobra Elite #2

Hard Asset

Rate this book
A perilous mission…

Shanti Lahiri’s tragic family history inspired her to fight for justice. Now a prosecutor with the International Criminal Court, she doesn’t have time for dating or relationships. When an investigation takes her to the Rohingya refugee camps in her father’s homeland of Bangladesh, the last thing she wants is an armed security team following her everywhere and frightening her already traumatized witnesses. But others who’ve tried to investigate these crimes have gone missing, and Shanti doesn’t want to be the next one to disappear. Despite her misgivings, she has no choice but to accept their protection. And, no, the fact that the team’s leader is lethally sexy has nothing to do with her decision.

An undeniable attraction…

Connor O’Neal left the Unit—Delta Force—after a decade of war, scarred both inside and out. Now an operative with Cobra International Security, he’s been tasked with protecting Shanti in one of the most dangerous parts of the world. He can handle anything the bad guys throw at him, but nothing prepares him for the instant attraction he feels to Shanti. From the first moment he sees her, he wants her. Too bad, because clients are strictly off-limits, and he’s a man who follows the rules—most of the time. Besides, he can’t afford any distractions when Shanti’s life is on the line.

A merciless enemy…

But something about Shanti breaks through Connor’s defenses, forcing him to confront his demons. As their mutual desire transforms into reckless passion, Shanti discovers evidence crucial to putting a mastermind of genocide behind bars. Connor knows her life is in immediate danger, but his plan to get her out of the country comes crashing down when a traitor strikes, leaving the two of them stranded in the jungles of Myanmar. Now on the run from a ruthless killer and his army, Connor and Shanti are fighting for survival—and a chance at the love of a lifetime.

I'm seriously loving this new series by Pamela Clare. There were so many good things in Connor and Shanti's story. They're an opposites attract couple, one's a fighter and the other's a peace-seeker.

Hard Asset gives you a good look at both sides of the coin. There was no right or wrong, just different ways to work together to accomplish true unity.

Things get extremely dangerous when Shanti's efforts to bring down a very, bad man strands her in the middle of a jungle with just Connor to save her from an army of bad men.

For a peace loving woman, Shanti was every bit the fighter to stay alive. Their time in the jungle gives her a good look at why men like Connor are necessary. It also showed Connor that he isn't just a soldier.

This story was incredibly detailed in a way that fascinated me as I followed their journey through the jungle. Shanti is a better woman than me. I don't think I could have handled half of what she experienced. However, I sure would love to try it with Connor!

Shanti Lahiri is a prosecutor with the International Criminal Court at The Hague who must travel to Bangladesh to take witness statements from refugees, incriminating a Myanmar general of genocide and much worse. It’s a dangerous assignment and Cobra Elite is engaged to provide her protection. Connor O’Neal is leading the team and when he and Shanti meet for the first time, their mutual attraction surprises both of them. Neither wants that to go anywhere as Cobra Elite has a firm policy against fraternizing and Shanti is a peace advocate who doesn’t like armed security details or soldiers when she’s doing her job.

This was a brilliant piece of writing where an absolutely beautiful love story emerges in the midst of the most harsh, brutal and ugly circumstances. Those witness statements were horrendous so them finding each other in the midst of all this was a great balm. Things go awry, stranding Connor and Shanti in the dangerous jungles of Myanmar. Conditions are beyond awful and he has to get both of them to the Bangladesh border, estimated to take about seven days. It’s frightening, hazardous and filled with perilous moments but somehow Shanti and Connor find moments to get beyond skin deep and discover their most private thoughts, beliefs and aspirations. It was realistic, often painful but so honest at times I felt like a voyeur. It is a gorgeous love story but also so much more given the life Connor has led and the tragic history of Shanti’s family.

I loved everything about this tension-filled, exciting, horrific and lovely story. I don’t know how Clare creates an authentic romance in these situations but it never got lost in all the suspense and thrills. My heart raced from the beginning and didn’t stop until the epilogue. I also appreciated the cultural education as the regions were obviously well researched, both ethically and politically. So well done and I’m still experiencing a wonderful hangover.

Definitivamente Pamela Clare nunca decepciona.

Altamente recomendable.

Connor and Shanti...war and peace...warrior and angel. They shouldn't have worked together, but they did. Man, Shanti kicked butt in the jungle, and showed she was made for Connor. Connor was strong, but gentle when she needed it. Of course, once they're out of the jungle, he gets stupid man disease, but eventually gets it right. A sex porn temple in the middle of the jungle..lol

Tension and love abound in this top-notch romantic suspense…

Shanti’s family background led her on a path and career with the International Criminal Court. Every time she successfully charged and convicted those who thrived on violence on a grand scale, meant she had won. Won for the victims and shone some light on her relatives who never got justice for themselves. Faced with an almost impossible task she soon realized how capable Cobra Elite was in protecting her. And how much Connor had grown on her…

Connor’s life was ex-military so he knew about evil and the violence that came with it. He and his team would guard Shanti with everything they had, including themselves. Little did he know the petite lawyer was going to mean so much more than a job…

I admit the beginning was a bit slow going but that may have been life just interfering in my much needed reading time. Once I got about four chapters in, though, I was hooked… Shanti and Connor were both a powerhouse in their own unique way, fighting for justice in very different ways. As they bonded over life-threatening situations, they came to understand better each other’s points of view. And realize respect soon turned to love… They were idealistic but realistic, serious but also able to savour the moments in life that made it worth living…

If you are a fan of military romance, great writing and unforgettable characters, than this story is for you! ~Diane, 4.5 stars

The second book in the Cobra Elite series by Pamela Clare. Shanti Lahiri needs to go to Bangladesh to interview victims of heinous crimes. But she cannot go alone and a team from Cobra Elite accompany her to keep her safe. The man in charge of the team is Connor O'Neal. For him it's all business and he will keep everything professional. No matter how attracted to Shanti he is.

I don't really know how to praise Ms. Clare more than I already have. She writes awesome, exciting stories and I love everything she has written that I have read. Ms Clare's books just work for me.

Hard Asset is the second book in Pamela Clare's Cobra Elite series and is as good as the first. This is Conner and Shanti's story. Shanti is an international lawyer whose job it is to bring war criminals to justice. She has a family tragedy in her background that led her to want to help others. Because she has to enter a dangerous area to interview victims she needs a security force. Conner heads up this force. From their first meeting they are attracted to each other. Their jobs seem to be at odds but as the story progresses they come to appreciate each other's beliefs and approaches to life. When their helicopter crashes they must undertake a dangerous journey with a dangerous man and his army chasing them. Along the way they find love and strength in each other. I really liked these two together. Conner is a tough man but Shanti changes his life. Highly recommended for PC fans and all those who like sexy, dangerous, faced-paced romantic suspense thrillers.

This book is Pamela Clare romantic suspense at its finest. I really loved both Shanti and Connor and I liked the overall story here. I will admit that the first book in this series didn’t pul me in as much as many other books by this author have (though I still liked it), but book 2 was a home run for me. I can’t wait for more in this series and I want to see all the supporting characters get their HEAs!

It was a good read as always, and a lot of fun; but there’s something about Clare’s newer books that are a little formulaic. Plus, the sexual tension and then the sex tend to overpower the storyline...towards the end, any pretense at realism pretty much went out the window to neatly bow-tie the HEA.

It's been a while since I've read a Pamela Clare RS and it wasn't a disappointment. It was action packed from beginning to end with some sexy times thrown in as well. There was an immediate attraction between these two, though they try to deny it and Clare did a great job of showing it.

I look forward to reading the rest of the series especially Elizabeth and McManus! :)

I am not a fan of romance or romantic-suspense with overly political themes. Just not my cuppa. The issues raised in "Hard Asset" were heart rending and, I suspect, totally true. Doesn't make that any easier to read and comprehend. Anyway, I loved the book which shined a light on a part of the world I'm sure a lot of people know little about. There is a hot romance too, something you can always depend on Pamela Clare to deliver. The suspense comes from the fleeing for their lives after a helicopter crash with an army on their tail.

Connor O’Neal is working for Cobra International Security after leaving the Army Delta Force. He has a lot of experience in war zones and feels more at home there than in his condo in Denver, CO. He volunteers for any assignment that takes him to any hotspot in the world, as if he can outrun the nightmares. As for any relationship, well, he's not a relationship kind of guy. When he is assigned as personal protection for an attorney with the International Criminal Court, based in the Hague, Switzerland, he is thrown off his game by his reaction to the beautiful Shanti. Clients are off limits, Cobra rules, and he really doesn't need the distraction while trying to protect her as she interviews victims of genocide in the Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh.

Shanti Lahiri is driven to find justice for the displaced Rohingya people who have been driven from their homes by the murderous government of Myanmar. It is heartbreaking, nightmare work and being in her father's homeland only reminds her of the prejudice in her own family. The last thing she wants is a out of control attraction to her head of security.

When Shanti obtains conclusive evidence of the atrocities, Connor knows her life is in danger more than ever and an immediate plan to leave is in order, but there is a traitor and the helicopter Connor and Shanti are on is taken and they are flying straight into the jungles of Myanmar instead of to safety. The copter crashes and Connor and Shanti are stranded in a jungle in a hostile country that had no respect for international law and that want Connor and Shanti dead. Their journey to safety requires then to reevaluate what is really important and they each decide that their lives and love are what is.

I’m not a huge romantic suspense fan these days. But there are 3 authors I make exceptions for. I 1-click these authors without questions: Scarlett Cole, Kaylea Cross ...and Pamela Clare. In fact, I tend to judge all romantic suspense against Pamela Clare’s books. And I’m pleased to report that Hard Asset delivered everything I’ve come to know and love about a Pamela Clare read.

Plot overview: Former Delta Force operative Connor (now with an elite personal security firm) must protect Shanti, a prosecutor for the International Criminal Court, from a ruthless enemy who wants her dead.

Here’s what you’ll get if you decide to read this book (or any Pamela Clare read, actually):

1. A hero is ALL alpha male, but never an alphahole

2. A heroine who is brave, capable, good at her job (great competence porn), and sassy. Sassy can sometimes go wrong for me, because some authors mistake “sassy” for “bitchy”, but that never happens with Shanti or any of Pamela Clare’s characters. She does “sassy” heroines right.

3. Descriptions of settings that are so vivid, you’ll feel like you’re right there with the characters, going through everything they’re going through.

4. Sex scenes of the oh-holy-hell-that’s-hot variety

5. Realistic, snappy banter

6. Action scenes that have you biting your nails and/or sitting on the edge of your seat. The suspense is INTENSE.

7. Enough description of the bad guy’s deeds to let me know he’s an irredeemable asshole without giving me so description that I’m scarred for life. (I’m looking at you, Lisa Gardner)

8. An ending that doesn’t include the heroine giving up any of her career ambitions for love and a shot at marriage

9. No cliffhangers and a totally believable HEA.

I also loved that Connor, the hero, was a total badass, but that he showed some vulnerability. His struggles with PTSD felt so real that my heart ached for him.

So, I mean...what else do I have to say to convince you to read this book? Y’all know I don’t rave about stuff often. Reviews don’t get any gushier than this. What are you waiting for? Why aren’t you 1-clicking??

A sexy suspenseful trip through the jungle!

The second book in the Cobra Elite romantic suspense series, the newest series from I-Team author Pamela Clare. (Pamela Clare writes fabulous contemporary and historical series as well, in case you didn’t know.)

Shanti is a prosecutor with the International Criminal Court – and seriously, how cool is that. I LOVE getting a behind-the-scenes looks at this. Connor is a sweet and sexy guy with a tortured soul – and Pamela Clare writes a tortured soul like no other.

He is assigned to protect her as she gathers evidence from survivors of genocidal attacks, but like the course of true love, the course of justice never did run smooth, and in a #dammitPamela moment of heart-stopping adrenaline, things go horribly wrong and they end up on the run together.

That’s where it gets REALLY interesting.

This story is a fabulous combination of smart/sexy/funny against a background of real world issues, with two very genuine and human people finding their way toward each other as they find their way out of terrifying danger. There are a lot of super interesting little things along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute, and experienced post-book depression when it was over.

Time for an I-Team re-read, clearly.

Honestly it's nice to read about a brown woman as the heroine!!

The story was great even though the hero did the usual "I'm not sure if I'm good enough for her" thing but he didn't ignore her and within three weeks he got back with her.

I think what I most love is that the hero was accepting of her culture and food that I respect him so much for it ❤️

Pamela Clare continues her Cobra Elite series with a gripping, page turning romance between two polar opposites, a human rights lawyer and a hardened soldier.

Shanti Lahiri has dedicated her life to fight for justice. Her latest assignment as a prosecutor in the International Criminal Court requires her to interview survivors of unspeakable violence in refugee camps in Bangladesh. An armed guard is the last thing she wants but her safety and the success of her assignment requires it. It doesn’t matter that the man in charge is gorgeous.

After a decade of serving his country, Connor O’Neal has taken a job with Cobra International Security. So far the most difficult part of his job is coming back from assignment, but nothing would have prepared him for Shanti. His attraction to her is immediate and intense. Neither can afford to cross the line that keeps them safe, but their passion and desire is impossible to ignore. Can they survive the jungles of Myanmar while being chased by merciless assassin?

I devoured this incredibly thrilling romance! Clare produces an exciting story with a gritty backdrop exposing unimaginable atrocities, while showcasing human resilience, hope and will to survive. It felt very real and well researched, with details expertly woven in creating an action-thriller movie in my mind’s eye. I loved sitting at the edge of my seat reading this sizzling jungle romance.
Something stirred inside Connor at the sight of her, something beyond sexual desire, something more primal. Shanti was Eve. She was a goddess. She was life itself.

Connor and Shanti were and unlikely couple but both equally compelling characters who with their palpable chemistry found common ground in their own survival, bravery and the pursuit of justice. Shanti tenderly helps Connor heal old wounds and move forward to welcome love and happiness.
He respected and admired her for her resilience and determination. This wasn’t just a job for her. She truly cared about people.

Clare writes stirringly of the sad circumstances the Rohingya people face. Tyranny and injustice were the motivators, but in the end, Clare rewards readers with a sizzling and heartfelt love story. I loved getting updated about past and future characters and I can’t wait to read more.

Hard Asset is book #2 of the Cobra Elite series by author Pamela Clare. It’s written from both points of view with a happy ending and no cliffhanger.

Cobra Security is hired by the ICC to protect Shanti Lahiri, the prosecutor assigned to investigate the charges of genocide and war crimes again the Rohingya people of Myanmar. Connor O'Neill, a former Delta Force operative, leads her protection detail and is determined to keep a professional distance despite the attraction the blooms between them. But all bets are off when Shanti and Connor are stranded in the jungle and must work together to escape a ruthless killer hell-bent on destroying the evidence in Shanti's possession.

Despite the action-packed plot and the compelling setting focusing on the Rohingya genocide, the romance between Connor and Shanti falls flat.

The heartbreaking descriptions of the attacks on the Rohingya and the very real suffering of the refugees make for distressing, but important reading. We in the West take our safety, security, and freedoms for granted, and it is crucial that we never lose sight of the plights of those who are victims of cruel and tyrannical regimes.

Writing a romance against this backdrop is difficult, and Clare puts in a good effort. Unfortunately, Connor and Shanti's relationship fails to completely resonate mainly due to the fact that Shanti never manages to overcome the initial impression of being a self-righteous do-gooder. Some of her observations on war and combat are particularly naive and sanctimonious. While she does come to realize that not all soldiers are vicious monsters and sometimes one needs to fight to preserve life, the damage is already done.

Connor, on the other hand, is a fantastic hero. Despite the trauma of war, he has a strong moral compass and a profound desire to protect those who cannot fight for themselves. To be honest, Shanti does not deserve him and their connection, both physical and emotional, feels forced rather than natural.

Overall, this is worth the read for the political message, but Clare has written better romances.

Another fabulous read by Pamela Clare. She always writes heart pounding stories and this was no exception. It was another book I read all in one sitting. I could not put it down. Loved Connor and Shanti. Connor all hard edges from Delta Force and now the Cobra Elite, and Shanti, a beautiful half Brahmin Hindu Woman who is a lawyer with the UN and is trying to help the people who were escaping the genocide of the Hindu. I must confess of knowing very little about this region, and although this is fiction, I am sure Ms. Clare researched it well as there was recently an article in the New York Times. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful, rollercoaster action packed ride of a read, and if you like your romance with a great this story, this is it!

Hard Asset was a thrilling read! I enjoyed the lusty chemistry between Connor and Shanti (and they had it in spades!), but the suspense elements were what really hit this reader’s sweet spot! Clare had me on the edge of my seat, holding my breath time and time again, eagerly anticipating what would come next! Moments of thoughtful introspection, quick-witted humor, stacks of suspense, and one sizzling romance had me devouring this book in one sitting. My one complaint would be the highly sensitive international case Shanti worked on took a turn I wasn’t prepared for, however, the rest of the story more than delivered satisfying results.

ARC Review, 4.5 stars

Pamela Clare is one of my favorite romantic suspense authors and this is the reason why. Her pacing in impeccable. Her characters are engrossing. The banter is witty. The storyline keeps you on the edge of your seat. And Pamela Clare does her research. By focusing on the Rohingya people, she sheds light to a travesty that is happening in our world this moment. This one feels important.

When I read a book by this author I've come to expect some hard hitting realism's about the world today, things that make this book stand out for me against other run of the mill romantic suspense.

The case that Shanti was working on was brutal, hearing the testimony from the women made me cry in how horrible it was and knowing that while this book is fiction this happens to real people every day. I found myself cheering Shanti on, wanting her to get the "bad" general, to make him pay, although it wouldn't be enough. Having the Cobra team along to keep her safe went a long way in helping keep Shanti focused on her job.

Quickly though it went to crap in a big way and it seemed like we had the Shanti and Connor show, fighting their way across a hostile country with limited resources. I admired Shani during their run, she kept up good and didn't complain. All I could think during the action was there is no way I'd have been half as good, nor thought on my toes like that. Along the way they had to make some tough choices, choices that could've cost them their lives, but luck seemed to be on their side as they made it through.

You would have thought that it would be all rainbows and puppy dogs for the couple from here, but Connor was too much in his head, the old "I'm not good for her". It took a while, time to think and his dad's sage advice before Connor really sought what he wanted in Shanti.

And as good as the whole book was, for me the best part was the end, Connor having to submit to such a common ritual, an odd thing for a grown man, even odder considering the things he'd done in his life, but something he very much needed.

Let me start by saying I love this author. This story made me sad with its fictional violence that mirrors real world issues. Downer. It was a decent story but lost a star in my rating due to one thing I can't stand in these military special ops stories. The sex in the midst of danger. ARGH!!!! Being on the run in the jungle but they have time to stop for sex. Really?!? Yea, yea, the adrenaline, but puh-leez! Think about this. Running for your life through the jungle for days, poisonous snakes everywhere, lack of enough food or water, probably smelling pretty rank from the lack of amenities, you better believe the last thing on my mind is jumping the the hot guy next to me (who no doubt has a bad case of the funk too). Nah, not high on my list. But maybe that's just me. Maybe fictional characters don't need a shower and a good dose of deodorant before they do the deed. Ugh! My eyes are rolling. :-/

I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Hard Asset is the second book in Pamela Clare's Cobra Elite series, but it can be read as a standalone. This is actually my first Pamela Clare book and I really enjoyed it. I'm even more excited to dive into her backlist now.

Hard Asset is a fast-paced survival romance. Shanti is an attorney working for the International Criminal Court. She has to go to Bangladesh, the country where she was born, to investigate war crimes committed against the Rohingya refugees. Others who tried to investigate these war crimes have been captured by the Myanmar army, so the Cobra Elite team is hired to accompany and protect her. Shanti and the head of her security, Connor, have this instant connection that is tested to the limits when they become stranded in the jungles of Myanmar. They are forced to rely on each other to survive and to make it to the border to Bangladesh all while escaping the Myanmar soldiers who are after them.

The plot was thrilling and exciting, often leaving me at the edge of my seat. The romance was pretty good as well, though I will confess that I was more into the whole survival aspect than the romance itself. My favourite thing about the romance is how the hero and heroine are both so mature, but disagree on a moralistic stance regarding the use of violence and weapons. This disagreement led to some level of tension between them, but not too much. I think sexual tension was definitely missing for me. There was sexual attraction, but not too much sexual tension because the characters seem to get along for the most part. There was also not much resistance, even though the hero constantly emphasized he could get fired for sleeping with the heroine.

Some of the chapters ended rather abruptly. The writing is crisp and sharp, perfect for the action and survival part of the story, but Clare's prose is not emotive enough for me. There is significant emotional development, but not too deep or detailed. The emotional depth only seemed to shine through in the last 20% and I think that's the main thing that's off about the book. I wanted to feel the love between Shanti and Connor a lot more than I did. I think Clare nailed the emotionality when it came to describing the struggles and trauma of the Rohingya refugees. But when it came to the romance, the emotionality was basically bland, except for the very last part of the book.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book, even if I did enjoy the action more than the romance. I'm a little anxious to read the first book in the series because Afghanistan is such a controversial setting...we'll see. But I'm definitely psyched to read the I-Team series!

P.S. I love how much Connor loves elephants

FTC DISCLAIMER: I RECEIVED AN E-ARC FROM THE PUBLISHER THROUGH ONE OF A VARIETY OF SOURCES. I VOLUNTARILY OFFER MY HONEST REVIEW OF THE BOOK, THOUGH IT IS NOT EXPECTED OF ME! RECEIPT OF THIS BOOK IN THIS MANNER DOES NOT AFFECT MY OPINION OF THE BOOK OR THE CONTENT OF MY REVIEW!

I've read many of this author's romantic suspense novels, and I have to say that she's definitely ramped up the action in this new series!

Once again, I really liked the subject addressed in this story, as I felt it was one that hadn't been addressed often. It was quite the eye opening read! However, as other reviewers mentioned, the book itself seemed formulaic. It was fast paced, sure, but nothing different, and the different is something I've come to expect from this author.

I liked the chemistry between Connor and Shanti, and how well thought out they were. Their romance was a bit of a different twist on the opposites attract trope, which I enjoyed. I especially liked the bits of humor injected throughout the course of the story!

All things considered, this was a very entertaining and enlightening read!

I find it almost impossible to put down a book by Pamela Clare once I've started it! This second book in the Cobra Elite series featured Shanti Lahiri as a human rights lawyer trying to get justice for women who had been brutalized in a refugee camp. While the book may be fiction, I have no doubt that these horrors are real and those facts make the story all the more intense. Connor is tasked with keeping her safe as she interviews witnesses but of course there is a large faction of people who don't want Shanti to live long enough to get justice for these women.
Once again, Pamela Clare has written a gripping novel of romantic suspense with non-stop action. I particularly liked the details given about Shanti's culture and background making her what you would think would be the complete opposite of Connor. All of Clare's books show her dedication to research in her books, which sets her apart from other authors.

Absolutely fantastic story!

Shanti is awesome. What a fantastic character! Her story and her philosophy of life the way Pamela developed her character over the book was really amazing. Connor was a perfect counterpoint to her. He had lived such a different way until meeting Shanti. Their trek towards safety for several days through hostile territory was absolutely heartbreaking and fantastic. Pamela knocked it out of the park with this book. The cultural mood and descriptions were so accurate you felt as if you were there. That can be frightening. Five stars all the way.

What a powerful story, it brought out all the emotions. Shanti and Connor had a nightmare of an experience. While on the run for their lives the story gave me many heart stopping moments. I was fascinated to read the horrific history of the country they were stranded in and at the same time did not feel preached to which was good. The author interspersed some romance to lighten the mood. I really enjoyed this novel and can't wait to see what this author does next.
