Although he could be both ruthless and opportunistic, Benito Mussolini was also driven by ideology and his desire to make Italy great. But conservative forces in the Italian establishment and factional warfare in his own fascist party were stumbling blocks to his policy, and ultimately Italy never became as fascist as Mussolini would have liked. Clear and engaging, this survey is key to the understanding of one of the most fascinating twentieth century European dictators.

Beetje saaie opsomming van historische feiten. Wel opvallend hoe groot de overeenkomsten zijn met huidige politici.

Started this on May 1st. Doubt wheter I will finish it. Mussolini was a terrible character, starting with his adolescense. Shows how a criminal with a disorder can make career in a weak state. Maybach the hanging wasn’t succes a bad idea after all, sorry folks...... Somehow, unwillingly the writer enhances my disgust. Many facts in a row, you constantly feel like your a bit lost. Will gave it another try tonight.

Read this for Italian Fascism class. An interesting and engaging book, as far as historical biographies go.
