This journal is a really great way, especially in the times were in, for a little self-care.

It uses checkboxes, lists, pictures, and straightforward questions that reminded me of what's really important and honestly made me laugh out loud.

It's a great little journal and I highly recommend it.

This is an intriguing self-care themed journal that allows the writer to reflect on their mental state, things that help them to feel cared for and happy and how to forget about all the stressors. I think there is a bit of a misnomer in the title, because it is not encouraging the writer not to wear face masks. The book is also not particular to the time of COVID-19, as it does not focus on quarantine (there are some suggestions of activities that are much less likely in time of COVID, such as volunteering to read to a group of children at the library- this is not specified as zoom or anything). I think that makes this book more generally applicable.

Much of the book focuses on things you enjoy and reflecting and what and how makes you happy, mentally removing some of the anxiety around stressors with exercises like pretend filling a boat and dumping it, and things you can do to improve your mental state. It's an easy book to pick up and do a page or two of at a time and will leave you in a better mood as you reflect on the things that bring you joy. The journal was helpful for refocusing the mind and guiding thought processes. For someone thinking about starting journaling, this could be helpful- especially if you enjoy some swear words.

Please note that I received a copy of this book through Sourcebooks Early Reads. All opinions are my own.

This was given to me as a gift. Meh. Wish I'd returned it within the time limit and gotten a different book. The author appears to have no expertise in self-care, psychology, etc. Book includes repetitive questions and prompts that aren't all that helpful. Despite the book's claims to go beyond spa days and buying stuff, a lot of the suggested activities involve food or retail therapy.

It's intended to be sassy and irreverent - great, bring it on. But it's so over the top that it gets to be ridiculous. Also, book is clearly written for young women in their 20s to maybe early 30s - lots of references to boyfriends, roommates, parents, supervisor/boss, but no mention of partner/spouse, kids, childrearing and household responsibilities, having an established career, etc.

Skip this book and make an appointment with a therapist or buy a legit book on self-care.
