Drinking Truth: Embracing the Covenant Mindset of the Bible

Rate this book
What is a covenant? It is a sacred and binding relationship of the highest order. Two key covenant elements are faithfulness and lovingkindness--two virtues we all long for in any meaningful relationship. It is through covenant dynamics that we discover true intimacy.

While contracts are often made to be broken, covenants are meant to endure. The heart of a covenant relationship is not about what we can get out of it, but rather how we can bless one another.

There was a day when virtually every culture in our world operated with a covenant mindset, but that day has long passed--especially in the West. This unfortunate change has led to a loss of trust in virtually every area of society. The result is that we often find ourselves feeling alone, discouraged, and anxious.

Even though much of Western culture had lost sight of a covenant worldview, the concept is still intensely relevant. The God who created us has always related to humanity in a covenant context. Form the first page of Genesis to the last page of revelation, the Bible was penned from a covenantal perspective. If we truly want to know and understand God, while experiencing His peace in the process, we will "Drink Truth" and fully embrace the covenant mindset of the Bible.

I played basketball for six years in high school. Though I sat on the bench often, I knew the game inside and out, and was quite good when I did get to play. Thirty years later, I found myself on a different bench watching my daughter play the same game I loved. I watched as she fell, stood up, and then began to dribble again. The referee blew the whistle on her traveling. I was confused, did they expect the player to continue dribbling from on the ground? The resounding response to my query of the crowd was “YES!”.
On page 36, Bob tells us “Jesus was born into a Jewish covenant culture. To interpret His teachings through a Western mindset, without understanding the culture in which He lived, can be like trying to participate in a sport event without knowing how the game is played.”
Or as I recalled that day, without remembering how the game is played. It became quite clear to me while reading this book, that no matter how much we think we know, we have to continue to learn and we have to keep it fresh in our minds.
“The entire Bible was written in a covenantal context.” (P177) This book is an indepth look at the covenant mindset. An understanding that is crucial for interpreting the Bible in its context. “A casual participation in a covenant relationship is a concept that does not exist.” P42 Mr. Santos takes an up close look at what it means to be in a covenant relationship for us, and cracks open those outlined in the Bible for us. He starts with the Adamic Covenant, goes through the Noahic, Abrahamic and Mosaic Covenants, then explores the Davidic Covenant. He unpacks the marriage covenant, and then pulls it all together to explore what we have in Jesus.
Bob shares his personal testimony, making things real for us. He shares his anxieties, insecurities, and lack of confidence that he experienced in his younger days. He incorporates the Word itself while he examines each of the covenants in the Bible for us. So often, clergy discard the Old while the tout the New, and I find it refreshing that this look at covenants, has the “Old” setting the stage for the “New”.
This is not a fluff piece that you will finish in minutes. There is meat here that you will want to gnaw on for a while. Each chapter has discussion questions, to aid in doing this text in a book club setting.

“At their core, the 10 Commandments focused on loving God and loving others.” (P.98)

“Love is an action and not a feeling. For those who genuinely believe in the LORD, good works will follow.” (228)

After his extensive look at covenants, Bob brings it all back around to love. He spends a great deal of time examining and unpacking what God has called us to do.

Reviewing a book and looking into another's thoughts on a topic such as this, has been a privilege. I hope you take the time to get this highly recommended look at the Covenant Mindset.
