Can Sarah find a way to save herself and Shadow?

After sixteen-year-old Sarah Whitman's father dies, leaving her an orphan, she risks being discovered and brought into the foster care system to rescue her beautiful Doberman, Shadow. Shadow sees ghosts, and by placing her fingers between Shadow's eyes, she sees ghosts too. Dr. Claudia Griffin, animal behavorist, at first seems to be a concerned and helpful ally, but in reality is out for herself and for her own selfish reasons wants Shadow. The real mystery centers around Dr. Griffin's past and her relationship to the ghosts. Sarah's father blessed her with detailed written guidance that was invaluable along the way. The letter he left with the "card" plays an integral part of the story. Oh my, I'm starting to give too much away. I loved the book! Jill is the author of "Rhino in the Room," which was her popular debut novel. Both books are wonderful!
Sarah Whitman should be in high school, getting dressed for her prom. Instead she is prematurely forced into the role of a grown-up, isolated by grief and a secret. Shadow, her adopted Doberman, who sees things that may or may not be there, is Sarah's lifeline and, perhaps, her undoing. But for better or worse, the pair's destiny is intertwined and their devotion to each other, unwavering. Hedgecock's new suspense novel will hook you from chapter one, and reel you in on a thrilling journey to an unsuspected conclusion.
Solid characters abound in Jill Hedgecock’s latest novel, Between Shadow’s Eyes, taking the reader on an unexpected journey. Focused around a pet zipper-nosed Doberman, young Sarah must face dangers that push her to her limits as she struggles to remain undiscovered as a minor living alone after the death of her father. ~William Gensburger
A fun read. Is it a mystery or a ghost story? It's both with layers of creative extraordinary circumstances to navigate the ride: an orphaned teenage heroine trying her best to keep out of foster home system, a ghost-seeing rescue dog, a veterinarian who is either quite eccentric or a murderer, and a cast of important bit characters that move the mystery along with each addictive chapter.
Jill Hedgecock’s, Between Shadow’s Eyes, is a compelling page-turner you’ll have a hard time putting down. Sarah Whitman is a newly orphaned sixteen-year-old, living in a new house with just her Doberman, Shadow by her side. Sarah’s father left her written life rules to follow, so that she can continue to live independent until she’s an adult. When Shadow begins barking enough to disturb the neighbors, Sarah finds it difficult to follow her dad’s rules and fix her current situation. Things are further complicated when it appears that Shadow maybe be barking at a ghost in the house. Ms. Hedgecock’s writing leaves the reader wondering what will happen next at the end of each chapter. Her characters are well thought out and there’s something here for YA and adult readers alike. If your looking for a page turner and some pandemic escapism, this book fits the bill.
Loved this book, it was suspenseful and dramatic, yet sucked you in so it really felt believable. The author writes so well I felt I had no choice but to keep turning pages. Loved that it was about a girl and her dog. Just felt like a timeless story! I'm recommending it to my friends and family. I know there is a sequel out now, "From Shadow's Perspective" and loved that one too!
If you love dogs and like ghost stories, I think you will have a connection here. Oh, there's a 'witchy woman' who skulks around in this story. I'm going to take my dog and move away.
