You thought you could escape?! Think again! Rick and Morty Forever! A new mini-series issue of D&D with Rick and Morty! Dual-classing Rick and Morty to Level 50! Milking Owlbears with -- *ahem*

Once upon a game, Rick, Morty, and the Smith family went on magical D&D adventures... now, magical D&D adventures are coming to Earth, and no one will survive the Painscape!

The world's greatest role-playing game returns to plague the world's most dysfunctional animated family and this time, we can't just rest on brand name recognition and curiosity to fuel your interest, Morty, because no one gives a d-d-damn about sequels unless they're really good, so no pressure, you f***ing hacks!

Fan favorite dice dependent Jim Zub (Samurai Jack, Savage Sword of Conan) re-teams up with Eisner-nominated cartoonist +5 Troy Little (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Powerpuff Girls) to destroy [adult swim's] pop culture juggernaut and the best-selling role-playing game that once used the term "THAC0."

Over half the issue is just rabid pandering, not that the entire first collection didn't have a ton of that. It accomplishes nothing other than shoehorning in the last couple of cameos they missed in the last issue, and I audibly groaned at the author self insert.
In the same first half the dialogue reads like its written by someone who only read the Rick and Morty Wikipedia page and the google definition of humor. Beth drunk and extramaritally horny, Rick burps and destroys something, Jerry dumb and poor, Morty stutters, Summer says brother smells.

Picks up something fierce in the second half with an interesting premise, humor and action. But you have to get through the first half of stunted, unfunny dialogue, that doesn't set up this arc or mention the resolve the last.

This right here could probably go in the collection I have of my worst nightmares. An entire universe that is addicted to D&D...... that sounds terrifying, I wouldn't ever want to be caught in this universe or be addicted to D&D! Although, this is coming from the guy who has reviewed dozens of D&D comics now, which, uh.......... SHUT UP! Also, I'm not sure why Morty is making fun of Rick here for making up these different Ricks as part of his D&D campaign. Need I remind you that there is an entire society that is dedicated to a bunch of Ricks and Mortys that are just as dumb as these two. This isn't anything new whatsoever, and you are just being an asshole....... can't blame you, but still.

2 stars because Rick calls out the ridiculous fetishization of “nerd culture”, but somehow I don’t think the authors are really going for biting social commentary and I don’t have high hopes for the next issue.
