I'm the author of three novels: HIDDEN PICTURES, THE IMPOSSIBLE FORTRESS, and (coming in October 2024!) THE LAST ONE AT THE WEDDING. For many years I was Publisher of Quirk Books, an indie press headquartered in Philadelphia, where I ghost-wrote many odd books that may or may not surface on this page, depending on the metadata. I live in West Philly with my wife and children.
Just like the movie, but with much less detail as it's a children's book. Mostly, it's Kevin's story and the family is pretty much left out until the end, so chunks of the story are missing.
We loved the illustrations and feel of the book. Glad to have this one in our Christmas collection.
I'm a big fan of these Pop Classic picturebooks and was excited to see brilliant 90's festive Home Alone also included in the range.
Whilst the stories are streamlined to fit into this style, all the others had managed to tell the complete moviein a condensed manner. Unfortunately massive amounts of the plot was omitted like the reason why Kevin had be left at Home Alone plus some of the other famous scenes too.
Thankfully the slapstick nature of the booby traps were depicted along with super cute illustrations of Harry and Marv slightly made up for any shortcomings...
We were SO excited to find out there is an illustrated Home Alone book!
It's a HIGHLY pared down and G-rated version of the film, with significantly less to no violence (slapstick or otherwise) and bad language. I definitely appreciate this book as a parent, kind of nice to get through the story without having to fast forward the naughty parts!
A wonderful book with great illustrations. I always like to read a Christmas book in July to enjoy some Christmas in July, and this one was perfect! It makes me want to put the movie on, have a pizza delivered, and tell the driver to "Keep the change you filthy animal!".
I just brought this home yesterday and we've now read this book about 10 times. It is a fairly charming rendition of the story. Brought up lots of talk about what we could do to the burglars, for better or worse.
One star for the pretty illustrations, other than that, it's just a cash grab because of the beloved film. Not that it would be easy to make it interesting or fun to read, because it's not, especially in a couple of pages, but as it is, this is the movie in a storybook for children, you better just show the movie to your kids instead of reading this..
This is an incredibly cute illustrated adaptation of the classic Christmas movie. I love Smith's art style. This edition also does a good job of toning down the violence (I mean, would anyone really want to read to a kid about a man stepping on a nail while barefoot or having his head set on fire?!) and adding in some lessons like trying to call 911. I think they could have done a little more regarding Kevin's family, like mentioning that they forgot him, or showing them working hard to get home to him. As a huge fan of the movie, I'm so glad to have this book!
I probably should have read this in December but whatever. This is such a lovely story with adorable illustrations. Really brought my childhood memories back.
I can't even tell you how thrilled I was when I found out that Home Alone, one of my all time favorite christmas movies ever, was turned into an illustrated childrens book. I saw it over on instagram and couldn't resist but buying it. I was excited like a little kid the night before christmas when I unpacked my amazon package.
It has become quite like a tradition to watch this movie every single year for christmas. I always watch it with my whole family, even my dad joins us every time. I can never decide which part of the movie I like best. Would it be the part when Kevin sets all the traps? Or when he goes shopping by himself loosing all his groceries on the street? Or maybe when he's reunited with his family again? So so so many great moments in this movie I can't even express how much I love it.
That is why I was a little disappointed when I found out that they have left out some of these moments in the childrens book. Especially as a chilrens book I think they would have been better off not leaving out so many funny and great moments. Apparently the book doesn't do the movie the justice it deserves. It does not have the depth the movie has but the illustrations are so beautiful and very nice to look at. If I had children I would definitely read it to them and - of course - show them the movie since I still think that the movie is much better than the book. I didn't have quite as much fun reading the book (as you can even call it 'reading' since I've finished it in not even two minutes) as watching the movie.
Even know I've expected much more of it I was so excited to look at the book; I'm so happy to have it in my book collection and if you have children you should definitely read this one to them but also watch the movie with them. The whole book, the illustrations, the font, the text - it's really adorable.
For anyone living under a rock for the last 25 years, Home Alone is about a kid who is, you guessed it, left home alone over the holidays by mistake. When burglars target his house, he must find a way to outwit them and defend his home. Aside from the beautiful illustrations, this illustrated re-telling is nothing special.
I suppose that isn't really the book's fault. Much of what makes the film magical is the characters (brought to life by a superb cast). It would be incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to translate all those memorable characters and great one-liners into a 4o-page picture book. The lovable family antics, a mother's single-minded determination to get back to her son, the more serious instances of violence -- these are all cut out. What you get is a watered down, overly simplified version of a truly entertaining film. Oh, and pretty pictures. It sort of begs the question... why bother?
I saw this at the library and just HAD to pick it up. It was so so cute and Home Alone was one of my favourite childhood films, so I just had to read it. As it was a book, it didn't have as much violence or brutality to it as the film did, but it was a cute little book and the art was gorgeous.
I have started to really appreciate art in books recently a lot more than I normally do, and I love it.
So... the book is great and I LOVE the illustrations. What annoys me is the deviation from key moments of the movie. :/ I found it hard not to fill in the blanks or add things from the movie. The added Santa magic was cute, but it missed the mark. :/
