The original novel was Robert E.Howard's only full-length novel about Conan It was originally written for British publisher Dennis Archer after he turned down a short story collection and was submitted to them in May 1934. However the publisher went bankrupt before the novel could be printed.
The story was then taken up and was first published as a five-part serial in Weird Tales between the months of December 1935 to April 1936 (with chapter 20 being misprinted as chapter 21). Robert E. Howard died the 11th of June 1936.
The novel was finally published in book form in hardcover by Gnome Press in 1950 under the title Conan the Conqueror, a title retained by all later editions until 1977.

In 1974, the story from the novel was adapted by Roy Thomas, Gil Kane and John Buscema in Marvel Comic's Giant-Size Conan #1-4 and Savage Sword of Conan #8, 10.
The lead story in Giant-Size Conan #1 was a 25-page chapter from The Hour of the Dragon. The plan was to adapt the novel over the first six issues, but Giant-Size Conan #4 was the last full color chapter after Marvel decided to discontinue the Giant titles and the story would have been incomplete . As it happens the story could be concluded in the black & white magazine Savage Sword of Conan #8 and #10. Added to this omnibus containing the whole The hour of the Dragon were two chapters concluding King Conan's story with Zenobia she who became his queen.

The story begins when Conan is about forty-two, during his reign as the King of Aquilonia, and he deals with a plot by a group of conspirators to depose him in favor of Valerius, heir to Conan's predecessor Numedides, whom he had slain to gain the throne. To accomplish this they resort to necromancy, resurrecting Xaltotun, an ancient sorcerer from the forgotten empire of Acheron. With his aid, the Aquilonian army is defeated by the rival kingdom of Nemedia and occupied. Conan, captured, is slated for execution until a sympathetic slave girl, Zenobia, risks her life to free him.

He then is informed that the heart of his Kingdom has been taken away and he can only regain his kingdom if he finds "the heart of Ahriman" a magic stone that can counter the magic of Xaltotun and give Conan a fighting chance to regain his kingdom.

The comic is in full colour and penciled by the best people you have with both the Savage Sword of Conan artists and those who made Conan the comic to read in many of his guises.

As a Conan fan I was truly in awe of this comic who did deliver the Conan I first encountered in The Savage Sword of Conan and is well worth the money to add this title to your comic collection as it is a great work of Fantasy that easily eclipses many attempts these days. I believe that Conan the Barbarian has been a strong influence on the Sword and Sorcery genre just like Tolkiens' creation has been a strong influence.

Bloody well worth your time spending in his companionship, by Crom if you do not enjoy this I am afraid you are simply not worthy enough.

So wonderful to finally read this entire story! I was a huge fan of the first installment, the GIANT SIZE CONAN, that is the cover image for this novel, but my comic purchasing was spotty in the late 1970s, and I never read the entire story. I am also far from a Howard scholar and was unaware (or forgot) that Howard wrote one novel length Conan story, this one, also known as CONAN THE CONQUEROR.

I was a huge fan of the KING CONAN series that followed this novel and expanded on what Howard might have written had he not taken his own life.

I read this one very slowly as I am a great fan of all these creators. Roy Thomas is among my very favorite writers as are artists Gill Kane and John Buscema.

This is a great novel for Conan and fantasy fans alike.

This adaptation is overwritten (as is usual for Roy Thomas) and suffers from inconsistent artwork that will appear rough by modern standards and is disappointing for an artist of Gil Kane's stature. However, it sticks to Robert Howard's original story pretty closely, and that story is one of the greatest sword and sorcery tales ever written. The bonus tales at the back are a mixed bag, although "Bride of the Conqueror" is quite good with some great artwork by John Buscema and a plot that feels at least a little like Howard's Conan.

"My enemies have killed me many times with words; with swords, never."

"It is an awful thing to die, alone and in the dark, when a moment before, you had thought of nothing but a jug of wine, and a pliable girl waiting for you. But, perhaps, it is worst of all to die not knowing even the name of your slayer."

King Conan loses the kingdom of Aquilonia due to sorcery. Only by retrieving the Heart of Ahriman can he break the grip of black magic, rally his bannermen to his side once more, and drive out the invading Nemedian army…

His quest leads him on many adventures including a thrilling raid into the Temple of Set in Stygia where the jewel is guarded by the seductive 10,000-year old vampire Akivasha…

This graphic novel collects Marvel's adaptation of Robert E. Howard's only novel-length Conan story, scripted by Roy Thomas and illustrated by Gil Kane and John Buscema. The adaptation spans the first four quarterly issues of Giant-Size Conan (1974-75) and concludes in Savage Sword of Conan #8 & #10 (1975-76). This 2019 trade paperback is the first time the entire saga has been collected together, all in color.

I really enjoy the 1970's-era Conan comics from Marvel, but I have mixed feelings about this one. The story is engaging, epic and sprawling, but at the same time it falls short of the standard set by Dark Horse's adaptation of the same material in 2013-14.

Thomas' script is faithful to the source material, often using dialogue and omniscient narration taken directly from the novel. However, it pales in comparison to Tim Truman's script for Dark Horse. Truman improved the story by adding an excellent frame story and increasing Zenobia's role.

Gil Kane's art is serviceable but it just looks a little bit "off" from the Conan the Barbarian and Savage Sword of Conan artwork by John Buscema. Kane's landscapes lack depth; his interior backgrounds lack detail. King Conan seems too young and is missing the world-weariness and gravitas he should have here.

Buscema takes the reigns back in the last issue. The art improves, but it still does not match Tomas Giorello's near-perfect color palette and sense of grand scale for the Dark Horse miniseries.

Bonus features: Also included are two original sequel stories by Thomas from Conan the Barbarian Annual #4-5.

"The Return of the Conqueror" (1978) -- Conan rides to Nemedia to claim his queen, but he faces one last betrayal by Tarascus…

"Bride of the Conqueror" (1979) -- On their wedding night, Zenobia is replaced by a monster, thanks to the shenanigans of Tsotha-Lanti (last seen in "Scarlet Citadel").

These two stories set up the events of the 1980 monthly comic King Conan, which ran for 55 issues.

Giant size Conan 1-4(1974-1975)
The Savage Sword of Conan 8,10(1975-1976)
Conan the Barbarian Annual 4,5(1078-1979)

Great book!

Still hasn't read Howard's original novel, but this was nice. Roy Thomas is one of the main guys in the 70's and in the 80's, to write exactly the same things that you see in the art, but in this, made some sense.

The drawing was ok on the first part. Gil Kane is nice, but i think the first colorist on this didn't add for real on the art. But when we change the colorist, and in addition "Big" John Buscema enters the game, is where Conan shines. Average beginning, great ending.

Love this character, and, if you're just like, try this.

One of those "Marvel classics" I had to force my way through just to say I've read it. Like most of Roy Thomas's work, the story never grabbed my interest and I never felt enthused to keep reading... The art is pretty good.

No queda bien.

Roy Thomas not only understood Conan as Robert E. Howard had conceived him, but he understood how Conan could be tweaked however subtly here and there to fit, FAITHFULLY I might, add into the landscape of the comic world. Such a platform is not so easy to translate for just any character, but Conan, an enigma of a character, seemed to be just as naturally suited to comics as any superhero.

This is the importance of Roy Thomas though, his faithfulness and appreciation for the original works.

Thus we come to the comic version of Conan's first and only novel, the Hour of the Dragon. And by the heavens is it meaty, satisfying, beautifully drawn and colored, and dare I employ the overused word "epic" rendition. I love it as much as my lungs probably appreciate breathing. Conan as I will forever hold in my heart is the epitome of heroic fantasy and sword and sorcery. In whatever form the genre may have existed in ancient poetic Eddas or legendary journeys such as the Odyssey, or in men akin to Conan such as Beowulf, etc., Robert E. Howard will always be seen by myself and hopefully many others as the true father of Sword and Sorcery as we enjoy it today. This is why faithful renditions are so crucial. Why change the bible?

Well, as it turns out to there are some decisions here that alter little details of the book to fit the medium, and some story decisions that just fit better with the spirit of the story, but that's my humble opinion. As Peter Jackson spiced up a few things for to better fit the silver screen, so Roy Thomas had done here. I wont spoil it though.

Ultimately we just won't get another Howard so let's just enjoy, with deep respect, his work and that of the people who serve to hold it high enough for more to witness.

This was a very interesting read. It started as a comic adaptation of Conan's story "The Hour of the Dragon" it extends the myth somewhat with additional story about Conan's bride and their wedding.

Story is one full of twists and turns and truly one cannot be hundred percent sure that Conan will go unscathed through all of these ordeals. Massed against him are nobles who are shamed by what they see as a mere barbarian ruling them and group of wizards that are ready to do anything in order to bring Conan down for the same reason (and in case of the elder one there is wanting to rule the world again). Conan will end up beaten up and imprisoned more than once but with help of his allies (and through his notorious stubbornness) he will prevail in the end.

Art was somewhat mixed bag here. I did not read any comics drawn by Gil Kane before. After looking at some black and white panels available online they are truly great but art in this edition seems little bit off. I dont know if it is due to coloring (b&w's sometimes look much better without colors) or reprinting. On the other hand John Buscema's panels are good as always - although I think they would be much better in b&w too (again this is my personal taste).

All in all this is a hefty book covering pages and pages of adventure, story runs very smoothly and artistic representation is very good. I truly enjoyed it (but again I am a great fan of Conan's stories :)).

Recommended to fans of heroic adventure and our intrepid barbarian.
