English title: Daydreaming About Me
This was a cute school romance novel that follows our main characters from high school to college. The last line of the summary ("This is a story of two rich people trying their best to look poor in front of the other") is quite misleading, as it makes you think that a lot of the story focuses on their hidden finances, but really it's just a small part of the story. I was expecting a much funnier story because of the summary and was surprised when that wasn't the case. Not sure why the author chose this description...
The story follows our female lead, Lin Yujing, as she moves to a new city after her parents' divorce and joins her dad with his new step-family. She also starts her second year of high school at a new school, where she slowly becomes friends with her new deskmate who's also the #1 troublemaker in the school, Shen Juan. He was held back for a year from school after almost beating his previous deskmate to death, so everyone is deathly terrified of him. Only our female lead interacts with him normally, since she's a transfer student who doesn't know about his black history.
**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**
I quite liked both main characters. The FL is a refreshing breath of air among all the other FLs in a school romance. She's always been very independent and hung out with guys, so she's not your typical shy girl. She's not afraid to get her hands dirty in a fight. For example, there's a big basketball match for their class, and instead of just cheering the ML from the side, I love that the FL actually volunteers to play when one of the players is injured and actually contributes to the team's victory. Or as another example, she happily watches the ML and his friends get into a fight with another group while she munches happily on 7-11 food. The typical FL would get scared or call the police, but our Lin Yujing completely treats it as her personal entertainment XP At the same time, she knows how to act cute and sweet talk her way out of any situation by relying on her good girl looks and her reputation as a top student. She's a smart girl.
The ML is also very interesting. He has such a ferocious reputation, but as Lin Yujing notices in their interactions, he's actually quite gentle and perceptive, nothing like the mean demon that everyone makes him out to be. There's a very reasonable explanation for why he loathes his previous deskmate and beat him up so badly. Also, he has such a chill attitude toward school, shows up late and sleepy all the time, and naps constantly in class, but he's secretly the #1 student in their grade. I love this guy!! I did find it a bit unrealistic that a high school student can run his own tattoo studio and maintain his high grades, but hey, that's fiction for you.
Lin Yujing puts it best herself:
Despite his carefree and indifferent exterior, Shen Juan was a very considerate person. Lin Yujing’s earlier comment about not wanting to go home had clearly revealed a lot of personal emotion, which Shen Juan had picked up on.
This was something she had noticed the second time they met at the 7-11 convenience store.
Despite his fierce and ruthless demeanor in fights, Shen Juan had a deeply hidden, gentle side. For example, during their clashes, he ensured that innocent bystanders, like Lin Yujing, wouldn’t get involved, even if it meant shielding them.
Another example was when he noticed her dropped rice ball and bought a replacement for her. Or when they had hotpot, and he discerned her slight wariness, ensuring her comfort by getting her a cola.
Their relationship develops very naturally from strangers to friends to lovers. They each have their own personal struggles that they deal with, and I love that eventually they're able to help each other through their issues. For Lin Yujing, it's her troubled family situation and her inability to rely on others since she's been disappointed by others time and time again. Because of the latter, she resists her growing feelings for the ML because she doesn't want to feel like she's dependent on anyone. Her parents' toxic marriage really ruined love and relationships for her. For Shen Juan, it's his comatose uncle and his pesky former deskmate, both of whom pop up from periodically and causes him a lot of stress.
In addition to their personal struggles, some of the conflict comes in external form through the FL's mother's extreme objection to their relationship, which she believes is distracting Lin Yujing from her studies and why she's perpetually only #2 in the grade. Because of this, their budding relationship suddenly becomes long distance, and it's only after 1.5 years that they can finally meet again in college.
I'd divide the story into two halves: the high school portion and the college portion. I definitely liked the first part better, since they have both hilarious and touching interactions there as they get to know each other better. The part that takes in college is more focused on the FL making up the sudden and lengthy long distance to Shen Juan before it becomes more like a slice of life of their college experience with some sweetness. Also, that's where the misunderstandings about the ML's financial situation comes out, until they finally resolve it. It was mildly comedic but not as funny as I thought it would be.
Overall, I quite enjoyed this story. It's nothing amazing, but if you're looking for a cute high school / college romance novel where the main characters help each other heal, then this is a solid option. I'm excited to try watching the drama that's based on this story (You Are Desire) as well!
I'll end my review with some excerpts from the story.
Like I mentioned earlier, they have some hilarious interactions during their high school days, like this one where Lin Yujing finds out that Shen Juan isn't so stupid after all:
Lin Yujing turned her head. Shen Juan also looked at her, appearing relaxed and calm.
The report card lay between them on the desk, dominating their attention like an exaggerated backdrop.
Lin Yujing felt she read eight words and a question mark on Shen Juan’s calm face: ——Is this all you scored?
“…”
Lin Yujing felt genuinely hurt.
She slowly, inch by inch, straightened up, leaned back, and stared at him expressionlessly, “703? That’s a good score.”
Shen Juan made a sound, still leaning on Liu Fujiang’s desk, and complimented her, “You did well too.”
Lin Yujing felt a bit suffocated, nearly choked, and almost passed out. Mockery.
She, Lin Yujing the great, who was always first in her grade, was mocked by her deskmate who skipped classes, fought, slept in class, didn’t do homework properly, and even mistook Ohm’s law for 3.1415926.

When Lin Yujing was about to run out of embarrassment, Shen Juan finally spoke. “Let’s continue with your metaphor,” he said softly. “I wouldn’t be annoyed by what my girlfriend wears when she goes out.”
Lin Yujing looked up.
Shen Juan leaned closer, lowering his voice. “I’d be annoyed that no matter what she wears, she’s going to cheer for other guys, and I have to watch.”
Lin Yujing didn’t want to continue this metaphor. It felt wrong with all the talk of girlfriends, and her heart was pounding faster.
Shen Juan took the red jersey from Li Lin and put it on. He then suddenly took a few steps closer, leaning forward with his hands on his knees, and looked at her, “Why don’t you ask me why I’m playing again?”
Lin Yujing was still replaying his shameless act of taking off the hoodie in her mind, her thoughts wandering. She asked absentmindedly, “Why?”
Shen Juan licked his lips and stared straight at her, “I want to see if there will be a girlfriend cheering for me.”

He would also stand in the brightly lit basketball gym, retreating with a smile, telling her, “Master Juan can do anything,” full of rebellious spirit.
He always shone, always invincible.
He had the most steadfast soul.
When Lin Zhi told Lin Yujing she would meet better people in the future, Lin Yujing didn’t argue.
But she knew what she thought, and so did Lin Zhi.
In just a few months, Shen Juan made her feel like she had seen the best scenery of her life.
She would never meet someone like him again.
There would never be anyone better.

It was simply, I want you to be happy.
His heart felt full and soft.
Shen Juan realized that Lin Yujing had truly changed.
The girl who had kept herself closed off over a year ago was now slowly, albeit clumsily, approaching him and reaching out to hold his hand.
Amidst the noise of the outdoor shooting range, with gunshots and cheers filling the air, the two of them sat silently in the corner.

slice of life kind of story, natural and fluffy chem between the MCs as friends, but when they start 'falling in love' and acting entitled and weirdly possessive, it feels icky and on-the-surface, in the sense of 'what do they even know about each other'
i liked the manhua's art too, and i also checked out the first ep of the L.A, just to realize the actor also act Zhang Lu ran in WIFTY, which i watched this August.

plot-wise is more like a 3/5 but enjoyment-wise... teehee! throwback to nanyang days when i would binge read chinese romance novels in the name of "practising chinese"

reread this book because it was recently made into a drama series and ive scrolled upon their manhua on douyin enough times to be curious about the plot again. I’d say the first part of the book was a solid 5 stars, but when it came to the second part, there was alot of heavy trauma involved and that kinda dampened the whole light tone they had throughout the novel. Yea it has been hinted that both characters came from tough backgrounds but I never expected it to be soooo harsh ykwim. so that's where the 4.75 stars happened.
the mmc is literally the perfect book boyfriend, other than the fact that he smokes habitually tho. he can fight, he takes real good care for the fmc's feelings, brings breakfast for her everyday, notices how she needs some space to herself and lets her have it, is super super smart, can play basketball really well and most importantly, he puts her wellbeing and loving her first and foremost. anything else does not matter.
in some way I related to the fmc alot here. From not believing in long lasting love, marriage, being hyper independent because of the firm belief that you only have yourself to rely on, only studying for the sake of obtaining good results so you would have broad choices to choose from and having no clear goal in life. though im not as smart as her, i really felt it when she said she had nothing she really liked doing because all she has done since day 1 was studying. i really really admire her, from being able to fight, so good at bkb, standing up for herself and the people who gets bullied, fighting for who she wants ignoring all the consequences, being brave enough to bet her whole future in the thought that he will still be in the same city and in that uni, overcoming depression and being such a bright individual despite the circumstances she came from.
from being the top 2 students in their school to being the gangsters of the school, this two is just the perfect duo. in uni, they both shone so bright in their respective majors too! and wow when he told her he would let her go for awhile and then come for her, her leaving him only telling him that she will be back and that her only hope is him still there waiting for her. to him saying that its really no use if hes the only one pulling her and she does not want to come to him hence he waited for her to return, and her finding a bunch of train tickets of him going to her city hoping just to get a glimpse of her and to see the sky she sees. wow these two are just meant to be atp. will i ever find a guy that will make me want to get into a relationship?
