To protect the dragon misfits, he must first understand them.
Jason has returned to the normalcy of the mountain village, but nothing is as it had been. Now connected to the Ice Dragon and responsible for keeping his presence a secret, it won’t be long before the Dragon Souls return. They know the Ice Dragon exists and will stop at nothing to control him.
When the Ice Dragon makes a request of Jason to search for other dragons like him, how can he refuse?
The search leads Jason away from home and into direct conflict with those searching for another dragon misfit. Jason must find the dragon and a way to protect it before the Dragon Souls bring the full might of their force to bear.
The arrival of a familiar foe forces Jason to look for help, but how can those of Dragon Haven trust him when they think he’s betrayed them?
Iron Dragon is the second book in The Dragon Misfits fantasy adventure series.
Well, this story certainly didn't get better. The whole story just has no background at all. Where are the dragons from, how do you catch one, how only few people can even see dragons..they are not particularly small creatures, who are the bad guys and why are they bad, what do they hope to achieve, who are the rebels and against whom do they fight and what do they have to gain and how...? Questions are endless and answers are nowhere to be found. The writing didn't get better and I can't say that I enjoyed reading this book at all. I have adored dragons ever since I read Eragon when I was like..10 years old so dragons are my favourite mythical beings but even they can't make me enjoy this series and read the next instalments. Sorry to all of the Dragon Misfits that are yet to be found but I have many promising books on my want to read shelf, and the Forest Dragon just isn't one of them.
Like: usually like this writer. However this series was a great disappointment at least as has been so far. Notes are found on GOODREADS. DISLIKE: lack of continuity... loss of plot and their contents... or... why allow you primary characters to win a pile of coin in the previous book an amount that could alter his and his families existence only to never mention the coin again... a least have him lose it or something because while reading the reader is invested in YOUR character we want to cheer for him/her or cry for them that is the essence of effective writing. When you drop a plot detail the story loses interest... if you don't care ?!? Why should we?
These books should be super exciting. With simple changes they could be transformed. There is no interaction between people or with the dragons that resonate. All you would have to do is Mark up the text where you need the human, the drama, the background to come alive. Mark the appropriate section, perseverance, respect, community feel, chipping together. The girlfriend, show respect, say her dad loves him and respects the family but. The old crippled lady who give cookies and cares. But she is old. Establish community character. You should have busted the food stealer. In a place like that, it would not be allowed. Show feelings for sister by showing her doing something good. To be respected for, the mom too. I have no empathy for her. Which is awful, that's your fault. The dragons, have approval, respect, learning and achievements of the bond, show the bond. Stick the words and insert stories words that create a connection to your characters. And a connection between characters. Your books lack basic people, interaction. The caring, the wanting to meet the needs of all. What are those needs. To give sister a life. The dragons companions to keep them safe and thrive. To end whatever abuse the bad guys are committing. See, I'm actually on book 3 and I still don't know what we are fighting against. I don't know why the way they train is so bad. You haven't established the bad guy. Yeah the one is bad, but he doesn't represent all. If you are doing some lame hold back to get past that. It's not working. You need to go back in and put which ever emotional motivation relationship building teamwork community character, in there. That will pull it together. You have much exciting perils he went through but if no one cares. It means nothing
The 2nd book in the series is so much better than the 1st book, Jason is becoming a much stronger character even though still a bit naïve, and too trusting. I love that he gets off the mountain and travels with the ice dragon, with whom he has forged a strong bond. They go in search of the dragon's other clutch mates. He even ventures out on his own when the going gets too difficult for the ice dragon who cannot survive for long away from the cold climate and the iron mines were definitely far from cold. Jason encounters the iron dragon, imprisoned in a cell and though unsure of the reception he would get once he frees the dragon, free him he does. This dragon is traumatised and has suffered at the hands of humans and is so different to the ice dragon. It really looks as though the experiments that Therin had carried out in depositing the dragon eggs in different locations really made the dragons develop by taking on certain features which they took from their birthing grounds. In fact the two dragons find it difficult to accept one another at first being wary of something so different, however Jason persuades them to work together as danger loomed on their near horizon. The dragon souls are still out to get hold of the dragons and are on Jason's trail so as he fights his way to try and save the two dragons. He manages to capture one of the dragon souls, thinking to gain answers from him. David though is more than Jason thinks he is and when he takes him to Dragon Haven, all hell is set loose. I found this book to be much more intriguing and am now really invested in the series and I am dying to go on reading about our dragon misfits if that is what they really are!
This second volume was a sandwich of irrationality and betrayal, with bread on either side of futility and depression. The author paints futility and depression of the condition of the small mountain village at the beginning then at the end, futility and depression because the author paints a picture that states that the more things change the more things stay the same. Jason betrays the Dragon Haven, by taking a Dragon Seeder to the Haven, lying to the people of Dragon Haven about the Dragon Misfits. This second volume is not as good as the first volume. Not as polished and not really having much common sense. I feel the author rushed this second volume, so much so, that half of the volume, was about the Forest Dragon (title of the third volume). This second volume is close to 300 pages long, with 21 chapters. There is little to no character or world development, just a constant rush to "save the Dragons"...So much so, that main character, Jason, really has no strategy, no plan, and no way to win... This series has 6 volumes, all published within 2 months of each other from January to November of 2020, so I can safely say, that this series has been concluded. There are all types of Dragons in this volume, and it seems the variety of the author is just getting started. Hoping the third volume does not crash and burn, since this second volume is about 60% as good as the first one...
Iron Dragon is the second book in The Dragon Misfits series by D.K. Holmberg. I set off and soon discovered that this proved to be a captivating blend of adventure, magic, heart, and soul --- AND Dragons! I didn’t need to know anything else before I plunged in to set off on the adventure. Our MC begins as an unlikely hero and grows in strength, resilience, and deep empathy - all while forging bonds with a group of 'misfit' dragons, each with their own personalities, quirks, and powers. I enjoyed this heartfelt, adventurous, and magical series and liked how Mr. Holmberg blended all the action with themes of friendship, and self-discovery. This is ideal for YA readers, and fans of dragon fantasy - who also enjoy character growth as much as the action and epic battles. Happy Reading…
Another enjoyable adventure from Holmberg. His books continue to be the kind of fantasy comfort food I love reading. In a genre where Grimdark has become so popular, it's refreshing to read more traditional fantasy stories. As an added bonus, they're always quick reads.
I didn't rate this one quite as highly as the first book, and I'm not sure why. I just didn't enjoy it quite as much.
great second book Jason has befriended the ice dragon who helps him provide meat for his family. The dragon asks Jason to help him find his hatch mates. The ice dragon takes him down the mountain near the town of Varmin and leaves him there. Jason finds a cave and a trapped dragon. After a difficult tie getting him free, they set off to find another. The Dragon Souls interfere and things get quite rough.
I love the ease of the story the fun of riding a dragon the cold seeping into my body as the main fact characteror that is n not a dragon tried to stay warm. The heat of fire as he wants from the deadly chill. The ease of falling and the thrill of the wind in my face as we supposed through..... I mean as he supposed through the beautiful sky.
Yep great second book and how I am off to read book 3 so excited..
I have thoroughly loved this series of books. I am having a hard time writing this review because I am ready for the Forest Dragon. I have also grown to love most of the characters; especially the ones trying to help save the dragons. I am in empathy overload because I truly respect the thoughts and needs of the main character. He has truly matured and evolved.
What a wonderful read. I like that we follow Jason on more adventures. Now that he has found the Ice Dragon he vows to help him find his Hatch Mates. So he goes on more adventures to find the Iron Dragon and looks for more. He is slowly figuring out his powers and now he is on the Dragon Souls radar it is not going to be easy. It is hard to put this down. Can not wait for the next book in the series.
Talk about an epic tale! The consummate social outcast becomes the unwitting champion for misfit dragons fighting for survival and freedom while trying to figure out who they are. I am so enamored with this story that I shall end this review to read the next installment of a truly exciting read!
The characters and story idea are interesting but even the hero is one dimensional. The repetition of "save the dragons" without explaining why they need saving made it impossible for me to continue past the second book. The series has potential to be fantastic but needs some serious editing.
The 2nd book in this series is even better than the 1st! Continuing Jason's story is a feast for dragon lovers, as we get to see how he fights against all odds to help and free the enslaved Dragons. Jason is thrust into situations he knows nothing about, yet his sense of right, to help the dragons, prevails and he starts to realise he can accomplish things others can't. Book 3, here I come!
A nice sequel to the dragon misfits series which, just like the first book, could have been so much better if the author had shortened some of the overly stretched and repetitive internal monologues of the main character. The effort would have been better spent working on the secondary characters and a richer world building.
Reads like a first draft. I kept thinking Audra Winter XD Seriously needs an edit. There are so many issues, repitition, awkward sentences, repitition, incorrect tenses, repitition, incorrect words, plot issues, pacing, repitition, etc. The word "explode" appeared approximately a million and one times. This series had so much potential, but this just feels unfinished. Very disappointing.
Really a 3.5, this moved better than the first one, but I think I'm done with the series for the simple reason that it didn't make me care about the world. Minor spoiler, but villains that keep coming back drive me insane, so that's probably a major contributing factor.
3.5 out of 5. Another fast read in this series. It picks right up where the 1st left. It furthers Jason's relationships with the misfit Dragons and his use of magic. Overall enjoying the series, just wished there was a little more depth to the characters.
This story was an excellent follow up to the preceding book, Ice Dragon. Looking forward to reading the next in the series, Forest Dragon. I will check back in after finishing!
The second book in the Dragon Misfits series. Another good read with a strong story of how Jason finds the second off the Misfit Dragons and fights the Dragon Souls to protect them
I am loving this series! I can't wait to read the next book in the series! Again, very easy reading and it is appropriate for all ages. I would recommend reading to toddlers even to get their imagination going! He has become one of my favorite authors!
My take away from this one is we should always believe in ourselves. Jason didn't know for sure who he could trust and the answer is still really not clear other than himself and the dragons.
The story continues and just keeps getting better and better. Book 2 provides a wonderful extension of the expanding story. With the 3rd volume waiting in library I am ready to take flight with a surge with the Dragons.😄😃
Iron Dragon is as enjoyable as Ice Dragon was. This series is well written . It was easy to get immersed in Jason's world and the exciting adventures with the dragons. Can't wait to see what the next book in the series will be about.
I never seem to get enough of these tales. Each story builds you up for the next one. It's so amazing that I can almost feel the wind one my face and fire in my hands!
