An accident on an icy road pins a paramedic father against his biggest fear;his 2 children in the backseat and only 1 can be saved. A decision must be made.
Jason Myers (1983- ) grew up in Northwest Ohio. Avid reader for years he put aside his dreams of writing to raise his children and focus on being an EMT/Firefighter. With his loving wife's support he has been able to finish several short stories and has been published in horror anthologies as well as on his own. He currently resides and still serves his city of Maumee, Ohio.
After finishing Myers' Cupid a few moments ago, this premise also pulled me right in. I felt that this, compared to its predecessor, was a much stronger showing for the author. Point of view was spot on, the concept was real and gut-wrenching, and Jackson, our lead, really made you feel for him. Now, the story touched on a ton of very triggering, sensitive, and downright intense topics. Much like Cupid, I felt that the pacing was way too quick, and everything whizzed by without the proper time to simmer with the reader. It all needed some additional time to have the desired impact, with much more development to bring it all full circle. There's nothing wrong with a short story, but some just need more pages added in, which this absolutely needed. Despite some critiques, this was still a very good and powerful experience from Jason Myers.
Despair, that's the overwhelming feeling I got from reading this book. It starts off hopeful and quickly spirals into heartbreak. It's not in your face horror, there's no gore or monsters, the horror is in the choice the main character has to make and what happens because of that choice.
With two sons of my own I thank God I haven’t had to make the choices this father has to make. For a debut short fiction piece, this one is well written and worth the read.
Awesome read especially if you are a medical professional, like myself. It makes you ask yourself the ultimate question, what would I do. Short but cuts right to the bone.
This story will keep you up at night, consistently checking on our child regardless of age. Be in a chubby toddler or a teen that thinks they are too old for cuddles. You won't be able to stop yourself from checking their chest for breath and sending up a small prayer of safety.
I did a video review for this on Tik Tok https://www.tiktok.com/@plus.size.bib... Feel free to check it out if you want to see me looking unstable and emotional.
Jason said this story helped him get back into writing and is based on his life experiences. After reading this I plan on giving him the BIGGEST BESTEST HUG next time I see him because WTF.
A father who is also a trained medic is faced with the difficult choice of needing to assess the situation from a professional standpoint and only being able to save one of his children after a car accident. If you survive that, the story continues as survivor's guilt takes hold of his only living child and once again as a father he's faced with another difficult choice.
This may only be 34 pages, but I guarantee you it's a story that will live rent free in your head for the rest of your life. I will point out that while the basis is serious and there are other WTF moments, Jason still manages to incorporate a bit of dark humor which was very much needed. Any smile during this read was a lifeline.
This was well crafted, poignant and powerful. The prose is smooth and easy to follow. The unfortunate protagonist's occupation was fleshed out nicely with references and information peppered throughout the narrative. The voice is cynical, which I thought while reading may have been inappropriate at certain parts from the narrator's view, but in the end I think it fits. The man had gone through hell and people in those sorts of fields develop morbid and cynical attitudes to cope with the things encountered. The decisions themselves mount with intensity as the story goes on. The clever thing the author does, however, plays upon the timeless paradox of free will and necessity. The choices were made, but in the end, what other choices were there? I enjoyed the writing, and the story progressed in a way that kept me interested and needing to know what would happen next. I will recommend this to friends, and will pick up more of the author's work in the future.
Despite being a short story, “Decisions” is jam-packed with emotionally charged scenes and plenty of plot without being overexplained. Its a tragically, well-balanced short. Being a first time mother with first responder credentials of my own- this hit differently. I credit Jason for his medical accuracy, despite having experience in the field. It can be a challenge to write a story in a way that makes sense to the average reader, even in laymans terms. Especially the devastation of a triage situation. To the casual observer, it may seem like he made a “decision”. Ultimately, fate made the decisions. And that drove the narrative. But even the MC can't quite admit that it wasn't his decision- he still feels like he made a choice. And he's not alone. So naturally, the ending surprised me somewhat. You won't find a HEA here- grab your tissues and read it anyways.
Got 30 mins for a quick short story? Sure! I'll knock this outon my lunch break....oh by the way, might as well rip my heart out and stab it several times with a dull pencil before placcing it haphazardly back in my chest and thinking I can just go about my business after my lunch break is over. I was a young single mother, and I know the fear of what Jackson faced and it's hard to not find a way to personify the feelings described in a story. How the hell do I go back to work after struggling to not cry for the last 10 mins. How the hell did a short story give me a freaking book hangover from the emotional self inflicting trauma? I'll be reading more of your writing...just not on my lunch breaks anymore.
Did you ever read a horror book that made you cry? Well, this was my first. My heart is still breaking as I type.
I think most parents of more than one child would decline to even think about the possibility of having to save one child over another. I can honestly say I've (thankfully) never had to think about that heart crushing scenario. This novella, however, shoves that horrific platter of misery in front of your face and says, "Take a bite, NOW."
This book isn't filled with monsters or serial unalivers. It's filled with soul crushing, monumental decisions that could easily be part of a real-life story. And that's what makes this some of the scariest horror you can read. 4💔⭐️
An accident on an icy road leaves a paramedic father battling against his biggest fear; both his children are injured and in desperate need of care but only one be saved. Sometimes it's the hardest decisions that turn out to be the wrong ones.
I received this story in exchange for an honest review and guys this book was heart murder. That's the only way I can explain how emotionally shattering this read was for me. I couldn't imagine as a parent having to make a choice such as this. How do you choose? I don't think that I could.
I'm sitting here, eyes glassy with tears threatening to fall, trying to figure out the words to say about this story. My heart is absolutely hurting. Decisions is a short story about Jackson, who becomes a father at the young age of 18, and all the hard decisions he's had to make through his life. Some are rather painful decisions that no parent should ever have to make.
Decisions is a short and captivating read, and maybe one of the most honest, heartfelt and tragic pieces I’ve come across. Hard to describe the effect it had on me, but my best attempt is that it felt like being in a falling elevator at more than one point, within just a few dozen pages. This one packs a punch like few others.
This one was so good, and also a heart-hurter. I love how the story just jumps right in without a lot of “beginning fluff” cluttering things up. The decisions were tough to read through as a parent, but also made it such a great read!
I'm pretty sure that I've lost my ability to speak after reading this, literally sobbing as I read. The heartache I feel for this man is astronomical. I can only imagine the amount of pain, sorrow, and trauma he went through. I want to hug him so hard.
This book grabs you from the start. There is so much emotion in such a short story. Jason grabs you and holds you with him as he walks you side by side with the main character. My mother's heart is still devastated. Very well written.
Thank you to the author for a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review!
I REALLY enjoyed the plot of this book. It's short and an easy read that is twisty, interesting, and thought-provoking. I read it in one sitting and couldn't put it down.
My biggest complaint is just that I think the book needed a bit more proofreading. I found a couple typos and there were a few paragraphs that could have used some editing. But if you're willing to put that aside, this book is worth reading.
This book was not what I expected. I read the book very quickly as it got my attention and kept it. I can't imagine ever having to make a decision like this. I definitely will be looking for more of his stories.
