An army of shadows has been amassed. Its one to destroy the Pirate Lords for their Shadow Master--an alchemist who has created a special gold that grants him unfathomable power. But the soothsayer, Tia Dalma has other plans for the Lords and cannot allow them to be destroyed. So she calls on the one man who can turn the tide--Captain Jack Sparrow...

In Book One of Legends of the Brethren Court, the mystic Tia Dalma sends Jack Sparrow on a mission to recover nine pieces of shadow gold. If he fails, she warns, the seas will become the playground of shadows and those who survive their reign of terror will wish they had not. Reluctantly relying on the help of his untrustworthy first mate, Barbossa, and a rag-tag assortment of familiar characters, Jack will take on the Shadow Master. But at what cost?

Let me begin by saying that anyone who knows me absolutely knows that I am completely obsessed with Pirates of the Caribbean. I love Jack Sparrow and Johnny Depp (well, Depp is Sparrow) and I have watched all the movies multiple times. And I am super excited about the fifth one coming out in the summer of 2017!

No, seriously, you do not understand how much I love the Pirates of the Caribbean. It is literally my most favorite movie franchise of all time.

This book was cute. I liked it. Obviously, it can by no means surpass the movies, but I was really impressed by how the author was able to really portray the mannerisms of the characters. The description was really beautiful especially for such a short children's book. The characters really came alive, and I could practically hear Johnny Depp's voice and see him. And Tia Dalma? That accent was spot on. However, obviously there were some qualms. And well? Jack Sparrow? Inimitable.

I liked this book. Super cute!

This one was kind of a slog of a read aloud to get through. There was a lot of random drama between some random women who were original characters. My boy wanted to read it for Jack Sparrow, but he wasn't excited by it. The writing was good, but not sure if we'll keep going with this series.

***Why?***
Sometimes I find books I want to read in the weirdest way! I was trying to find the little speech Barbossa held while freaking Elizabeth out:
"For too long I've been parched of thirst and unable to quench it. Too long I've been starving to death and haven't died. I feel nothing. Not the wind on my face nor the spray of the sea. Nor the warmth of a woman's flesh.
You best start believing in ghost stories, Miss Turner... you're in one!"
Instead I first found the title of this book.

I have such a soft spot for screen-to-book adaptations. Most of the time they truly are labours of love. Delightful.

*3.5

A somewhat overdone conflict and plot themes, but characters were spot on.

Arrr....be ye a scurvy sea dog, or a lumbustious landlubber, ye'll be wantin' to hoist the mizzen and weigh anchor with Cap'n Jack and his rollickin' crew.

Rob Kidd's book is a thrilling maritime adventure that captivates readers with its vivid storytelling. Set against the backdrop of the high seas, Kidd weaves a tale of pirates, treasures, and daring escapades. The characters are well-developed, each with their own unique charm and flaws. The author's descriptive prose paints a vivid picture of the salty air and the creaking of wooden ships. While the plot is fast-paced, there's a depth to the narrative that keeps readers engaged. Kidd's ability to blend action, humor, and suspense makes this book a must-read for those seeking an exhilarating journey on the open waters.

I would say that this book series is a lot better than its predecessor. It's a lot more mature and well written. It's more well thought out. The characters I found to be more interesting. Jack is a bit more mature. I know these books are written for children, so I'm not exactly the target audience.
