Philadelphia, 2090. Rufus Purdy wakes up disconnected from the hive, after fifty-five days of spell, to find that everyone in his life has given him up for dead. He falls in love with the confident and clever artist, Harper Williams. She is black, and he is white, and in the America of the fascist Heritage Party, their love could get them both killed.

As Harper draws Rufus unwittingly into an underworld of lost history and illicit knowledge, he learns that he alone can win over the hive, or help Harper to destroy it, in hopes of liberating America.
