The Green Berets #13

Hell of a Town: The Green Berets: Will Kane #4

Rate this book
Death lurks below. Will Kane finds a body underneath Hell Gate Bridge. Where this gruesome discovery leads him is a world even he, a New York native, never dreamed existed. Not even in his worst nightmares. No one knows the full extent of the labyrinth that lies below New York City. It's a world unto itself. People, mostly homeless, have made inroads to the more accessible parts for shelter. But there are others who prowl the darkness for their own evil reasons. He learns this isn't an isolated incident and that murders are being committed in horrendous ways, and they seem to be just the tip of the iceberg that can be seen. The police, not able to control the streets above, care little about what’s below and the missing. It's up to Kane to find out who is behind this. And as he literally digs deeper, he realizes it reaches to the highest levels of New York City.Ex-Green Beret Will Kane has undiagnosed Asperger. He is a high-functioning autistic, like a number of exceptional people, especially in the arts. Except his art is death and he is very, very good at it. Now he faces his greatest challenge yet."The best anti-hero since Jack Reacher." Amazon ReviewKirkus "Sinewy writing enhances this already potent action fix. An adrenaline cocktail from start to finish."

Besides my own interests, I read whatever my wife tells me to read-- she's a voracious reader and has wide-ranging tastes as my reviews show (she also always has the TV remote and she's always right about what to watch). I read a lot of nonfiction, mostly for research. Some of my favorite books are Lonesome Dove, Mystic River, LOTR, and an array of science fiction classics including the Foundation series. Our house is covered with books, although I finally broke down and started reading eBooks, strangely enough on my iPhone. Since I carry it pretty much everywhere, it means I always have an entire library of books with me.

I'm a West Point graduate, former Green Beret and a New York Times Bestselling Author. I've sold over five million books. My newest series begins with New York Minute, a thriller set in New York City in 1977.

I love using history and science in my books. My Area 51 series pretty much had me rewriting our entire history of civilization.

At one point I stopped reading because it was so intense. But I picked it back up and ultimately found it well worthwhile. Kane is another in a long-line of misanthropes - Andrew Vachss' Burke, Orphan X, Jack Reacher - who unintenially begin to right wrongs. Kane just happens to do it in a world inhabited by particularly horrific people. If this book was a movie, it would be the one that you watch peeking though your fingers because it scares you so bad you can't stop wathing. So, if you are in any way squeamish or suffer from traumatic triggers this may not be the book for you. It is a good, action filled story, with some very surprising heroes

Consistently OK

It's not going to win any prizes, but at the same time it's not a clunker either
Kane does his usual trick of finding trouble in the least.likely.of.places, this time round finding a body, whilst.out.on a run
As with everything he seems to touch, what should be just another body, turns into something far bigger and more gruesome, leading to a cult like group of wealthy killers doing it for kicks
Interestingly the Cellar continues to have a say in how things turn out for Will and I wonder if this will lead to tangential storylines
It should be 3.5* but I couldn't justify making it a 4*

Sickening

This is a sickening story of how power corrupts the mind & soul. I would think the brain is already corrupted & this kind of person goes after power with single minded focus to the detriment of anyone who gets in the way. I think these sort of people should be terminated without prejudice & not allowed to perpetuate a gene pool with these disorders. They are evil.

Outstanding followup to Will Kane #3

Another great Will Kane book. Excellent story, couldn't put it down. Bob Mayer has a knack for creating characters that keep you waiting for that next book in line.

Riveting

A very different story that kept me up not wanting to wait to see what happened next. Not normally the type of book that I would read but I was pleasantly surprised. I don't often leave reviews, but this book deserved one
