Still 5 stars - Even better the second time around
Rereading The Council reminded me exactly why the Darkness series is so addictive. By book five, Sasha has come so far from the insecure, overwhelmed mage we first met, and revisiting her growth with fresh eyes makes this installment hit even harder. She’s powerful, stubborn, sassy, and still wonderfully human—everything that makes her such an easy heroine to root for.
The political tension ramps up fast in this one. The Council isn’t just a formality; it’s a gauntlet. Watching Sasha walk into that den of white mages—knowing full well they’d love to control her or break her—still had my stomach in knots. And Stefan… rereading his arc makes his quiet intensity even more compelling. He’s an alpha who’s outgrown his leash, and the Council knows it. That danger hums under every scene.
The supporting cast shines just as brightly on a reread. Charles is still the king of one‑liners, Jonas is the steady anchor Sasha needs, and the Shifters prove once again that loyalty isn’t just a word—it’s a force. Their presence adds warmth and humor right when the story threatens to get too heavy.
What really stands out on a second read is how seamlessly Breene balances chaos, danger, and heart. The trials Sasha and Stefan face aren’t just magical—they’re emotional, political, and deeply personal. Proving themselves is one thing. Surviving the fallout is another.
This book still had me glued to every page, even knowing what was coming. The tension, the humor, the found‑family vibes, the romance—it all holds up beautifully. The Darkness series remains one of those rare worlds you’re happy to fall back into again and again.
First review - I found Into the Darkness. I read it in one night as I couldn't put it down, I was hooked. K F Breene had become my new favorite author. Needless to say the next morning I downloaded Braving the Elements and finished that in a day. Yes, you guessed it, I couldn't wait for the next installment of the story and quickly got copies of On a Razor's Edge & Demons. Neither disappointed!!
I just had to find out more about the author who had me spellbound with this wonderful series - the Darkness series. It was during this time I was provided a complimentary copy by the author/publisher for review of the next book in the series The Council.
During each book we have seen Sasha's insecurities slowly slipping away, being replaced with not only a little sass but she is also growing in her abilities to use her power. In The Council we see Sasha and Stefan, her one true soul mate, the Clan and the Shifters, coming together to face not only the challenges the Council has to offer but they are in a fight to keep themselves alive.
Jonas and her best friend, Charles (I just adore his ready wit) are constantly by her side ready to protect and keep her firmly rooted to the ground and make me laugh. Tim and the Shifters are there to show they are loyal more than ever to Sasha.
I just love this book and the series. It will have you hanging on each and every word, your heart beating in your chest just waiting to see how this motley crew come together, with chaos and humour to see Sasha prove herself worthy of not only the man she loves but also the Clan.
If you haven't read any of K F Breene's books you are truly missing out. I can't wait to see what her next book Shadow Watcher will bring.
