Charles in Charge…not quite.

I received an ARC of Charles from the author to read and review.

Charles has been part of this series from the beginning and is one of my favourite characters. The man is an utter goofball with a heart of gold. His main obsessions in life seem to be looking out for his family, getting his body serviced by numerous women in the mansion and knitting hideous pieces that he passes on to special people in his life. Ann is a shifter who has been around this bunch for a while. She has always had feeling for Charles, but doesn’t want to lose her heart to a man who doesn’t want to commit to just her. She has just broken up with her boyfriend who is also the Alpha in her pack, so she’s feeling lonely. After a few drinks and some flirting with other guys she comes across Charles who has just been propositioned by someone else in the house. In typical Charles fashion, he sees a better option and tries to talk Ann into a hook up.

This book shows the struggle Charles has in realising that he has deep feelings for Ann. Charles has always felt that by mating with someone you are denying what is a natural instinct in his kind. He comes straight out and says that he can give Ann everything but monogamy. This is not good enough for her so after one very, very hot hook-up she decides to not risk her heart any more and leave it at the one time.

There is a problem with the pack. Some pack members have gone missing without a trace. Tim, the pack Alpha sends experienced fighters with army training to investigate and they go missing too. It is decided Ann and Charles will go in to investigate. Most of the story centres on their search for answers and their budding feelings. We see them get to know each other better and form a really strong connection.

This was the last in the series from what I’ve heard and I will definitely miss it. I have always managed to have a good laugh at the antics of the characters. I loved reading the connections that developed between all of the couples…HOT and STEAMY!!! The action scenes were well described and made them easy to imagine. This is one series which makes me start to question – what’s really real out there?

4.5 the-perfect-closure-to-the-whole-series stars

I am so glad that this book was way, way better than the previous one (Jonas) and I had fun while reading it.

Charles is known from book one...he's a player, with somewhat childish displays, crazy antics, snarky jokes, he's very direct, outspoken and bloody honest...and very, very sexual as his best!

Ann Mallory is a shifter (she changes into a mountain lioness), she's fierce, sassy, good-hearted and open...

she is attracted to Charles from the first moment she saw him (I can remember in which book that was, sue me!) but she resisted him and the lingering pull towards him for a very long time hence he was a man/vamp-whore (but hey, his culture aproves it!), she wants the whole package (a house, babies, an a steady monogamous Charles)...

In this final book they are kinda forced into the action by being sent onto a mission, a stakeout to find out why shifters keep disappearing...the findings sent the further action in motion...they are spending more time together in a secluded place and the "heat" between them goes scorching hot, primal and carnal...(some of the best sex scenes I have red are in there!)

and Charles finds his true feeling awaken by the fact that Ann was a friend, already a constant in his presence and when she found herself in danger Charles quickly "grows-up", man up and takes back what was his all along

She was the woman that had always had a tight hold on his heart, he just hadn't been ready to see it.
well, he was ready now.

Fantastic closure to the series!

Really 1 1/2 stars but rounded up out of nostalgia for books 1 - 5.

Charles is the final novella in The Darkness Series and I was more than ready to say “Goodbye” to everyone. I LOVED the first 5 books of the series. I never really got on board with the central romance; just didn’t feel the chemistry – but I liked the world building, the characters, the witty banter, the humor, the action/adventure of the mages and the magic wars, the intrigue and the political machinations with the Council and the warring factions and I really enjoyed Sasha as a reasonably strong, resilient, kick ass lead. In one of my reviews I stated that the series could have stopped at book 5 for me and that was prophetically true. Book 6 seemed like filler. Book 7 was Jonas’s story which didn’t grab me and now the grand finale Charles – and I have to say “meh”.

I enjoyed Charles as Sasha’s bodyguard. I loved him as the teenaged, hormonal, horny, little brother sidekick. I wasn’t impressed with the adult, hormonal, horny, manwhore with the self professed magic dick who wanted to screw his way through the mansion as a romantic lead. Not my thing, and to add insult to injury – again – I really just did not feel the chemistry with him and Ann. Chemistry is a really personal thing – it’s not them, it’s me – but there it is. Luckily the Charles and Ann arc has been building over the past several installments, otherwise I would characterize the first 75% of the novella as largely porn without much plot. I think the sex was well written (it’s just that without the chemistry – meh).

The story picks up 75% through – because of course something has to happen to help Charles realize the depth of his feeling and that he really doesn’t want to give up Ann for untold and copious amounts of anonymous sex with half the free world. The plot to get him to that point however is predictable and reads like a bad horror movie. You know the ones where the MCs state “Oh look, we’re in the middle of nowhere with no weapons, we haven’t eaten in days and we’re injured – but there’s a trail pf blood leading into that abandoned building and the sounds of a chainsaw and a woman screaming…let’s go investigate”!!!! Yeah. So that’s not what happens, but it may as well be.

No worries though, all’s well that ends well. Everybody’s happy. All the males are committed and every able bodied female has turned into a baby factory.

Charles is the 8th and second last book in Breene’s Darkness series. Its based upon the Charles character who has had a prominent secondary role in the series since the first book. I’ve always enjoyed the Charles character. He’s like a big goofy puppy most of the time, who can flip a switch and become a vicious attack dog when the swords come out. He and Sasha have (other than when he was trying to get in her pants before Stefan marked her) always had a big sister/little brother type of relationship. The other main character in this book is Ann a shifter who turns into a mountain lion. Ann has also had a secondary character presence through most of the series as Sasha’s BFF. Although quite honestly the author has implied but never really given Sasha and Ann a whole lot of girl time to just be friends for readers to see the depth of that friendship. For most of the series Ann pops in, has a brief conversation with Sasha, throws some barbs at Charles and is gone only to show up later to fight beside Sasha and her clan when they confront the enemy. In this story we finally witness a bit of the closeness and the type of intimacy you would expect two BFFs to share.
I’m going to give this book a solid 3 stars but no more. It felt more like a modern romance story than the other books in the series where magic and sword play were as much a part of the story as romance. Although there’s a bit of magic and a lot of gun violence towards the end. I don’t have to worry about spoilers because if you read the synopsis you pretty much know the whole story. My problem is as a veteran reader of modern romance novels and a guy, I’ve grown a bit over sensitive over male characters who are so emotionally dense that they can’t see that everything they want and need is right in front of them until they almost lose it. Which is as the synopsis tells us, exactly what happens with Charles and Ann. Breene constantly beats us over the head with it. From the very opening of the story we have Charles mulling over the reality that his life of sexual debauchery is no longer making him happy. But he is clueless as to why or what to do about it as he clings to the notion that he must avoid a monogamous relationship to be free to screw anyone anytime he feels like it. When his feelings for Ann grow even more intense he doubles down on this belief by telling himself that is the way of his people, his culture. Which completely ignores the reality that his alpha Stefan is in a monogamous relationship with Sasha, his best friend and all around bad ass Jonas is in a monogamous relationship with Emmy, Selene one of his peers is in a monogamous relationship with Paulie. Many of his clan have mated with humans in monogamous relationships, have started families and are ridiculously content with their lives. The times they are a changing but Charles remains painfully oblivious. Another issue I have with this story is the fact that Charles is regularly demeaned for his man-whore ways even though sexual promiscuity is a dominant aspect of his clan’s culture. At the same time it’s clear that Ann has had more than her share of sexual partners in the past, Sasha has no issue with that and even now encourages her to have a one night hook-up ("you need to get laid") to help her get over her break-up with Tim, is never subjected to the least amount of negative judgment for her sexual past. Apparently because Ann is now ready to find “the One” and settle down and raise a family her previous sexual history or however many more guys she beds in her search for Mr. Right is fine. No double standard there.
Don’t get me wrong, this is a good book, a fun book with some battle and bloodshed excitement. The sex between Charles and Ann is off the charts hot! Even though Charles refusal to acknowledge the obvious was cloying at times the growing romantic bond between he and Ann as his feelings blossom to where even he can't deny them is touching. Seeing Sasha in full bitch mode with pregnancy hormones was fun. Although I really feel this series lost some steam after the 5th book The Council, it’s still been an enjoyable read and I’ll be a little sad when I finish the next book, the final in the series.

When shifters go missing, Charles is assigned to partner up with shapeshifter Ann to investigate. While the two have history, neither is willing to commit to any long term relationship, but that doesn't stop them from enjoying each other for the short time they'll be together.

It's not until Ann herself gets caught that Charles realizes his playboy days are over. That is if he manages to rescue Ann before it's too late.

* * * *

I've read every installment in this series as Charles' character has evolved from a man whore with no conscious to a loyal and true friend to Sasha who is STILL a man whore. It was just a matter of time until Charles got his butt handed to him and Amy was just the girl to serve it to him. :D

I read this final installment in the "Darkness series with mixed feelings. First is that it WAS the last (though I can see spinoff potential) and that's always an emotional roller coaster, but second is the fact that the author saved Charles story for last. Charles, the bad ass head of security for Sasha. whose really bad knitting skills are legendary. Charles, the one hold out to any sort of monogamous relationship, guy. Ya. That guy.

My end feelings.... anticlimatic. The Charles I have come to love and appreciate really didn't show through in this installment. Whether it was because he was finally put into a hero role and had to man up or whether he finally grew up, it just wasn't the same character, though he was still pretty awesome. lol.

As for the core romance. My opinion is that the sequence of events was condensed, rushed, and lacked an emotional connection between the central characters. Realizing of course that the two have been cameoed in previous installments, I myself would have appreciated more angst and inner conflict than the wham bamm epiphany, hallelujah presentation. Oh well.

As for the adult content. Toned down from previous installments, taking a back seat minor role to the action/adventure slant. Those who look for more beefcake and smut in their reads won't be happy but for those who look for the action/adventure/suspense. Yup, you'll be smiling.

End of series I'm told. Bummer. But I don't think we've seen the last of Boss (Stefan), Sasha, Jonas, and the gang. Keeping my fingers crossed ....

Charles is one of my favourite characters that made me laugh all the way through. This series would not have been the same without him. In this book he finally gets his love. With lots of action, danger, mayhem and madness it should not be missed.

Risky

Well Charles surprised me. I figured he would be a sexy man child for a really long time. He definitely picked a good time to grow up since he was the only person capable of protecting Ann. Ann took a huge risk by connecting with him knowing he was a player. I love courageous women. I am wondering though about this mysterious company and whether there will be more in the future.

****** Review for the series *****

Overall this was an enjoyable series. Loved the banter between the characters especially Charles and Sasha. Each of the books were pretty short so reading through the series didn’t take me long. I know Jameson’s novella is out there but I hope there a book for Tim floating around somewhere.

This book definitely wasn't as great as some of the others in the series but I am so happy that Charles finally gets himself together. The shifter focus was interesting.

‘Charles’ is book eight in K.F. Breene’s Darkness series. It’s highly recommended that the previous books are read prior to this, although it’s based off Charles and Ann’s POV plots, events and characters from the previous books make appearances.

Newly single Ann is encouraged by Sasha to have some fun with a male from the mansion, but there is only one guy she wants but he’s a massive player. One night can’t hurt right? With Shifters going missing with no explanation why, Alpha Tim asks for assistance from Stefan and the Clan, Charles is sent to investigate alongside Ann. After their night today feelings and emotions get a little grey, are Charles and Ann going to be able to continue on as nothing happened or will feelings get in the way?

I have been loving this series but I am a little disappointed with this one. Charles has been my favourite character from the beginning, he’s childish banter and behaviour has been delightful and enjoyable throughout the series, and I was looking forward to his book. But I feel that this one fell short. Charles was more like Jonas is this, he was nothing like I’ve loved and enjoyed from him. Don’t get me wrong I still enjoyed watching Charles and Ann coming to and accepting what’s going on with them (finally).

Loved getting to see the other characters we have loved and enjoyed so far. Charles with the kids is always a funny moment to witness especially when Sabrina and Savion try to protect each other from him.

But overall still a great book to read.

FYI recommended for mature adults as it contains intimate scenes.

I have wanted Charles and Ann’s story from the moment I read their characters and saw their chemistry in the previous books. Charles is an interesting guy; he’s lethal, cracks jokes constantly, is sleeping his way through the mansion in record time, takes nothing seriously and…get this…he knits!!!

Ann is hardcore, a fighter with a big heart, open to change, accepting of others (unlike most of the shifters), and can take it as well as she can dish it out. Ann and Charles have always had great banter, lots of sexual innuendo (mostly from Charles) and Ann is constantly acting as if she would not get with him even if he was the last man on earth.

I wasn’t sure how Charles, being the big child he is, could have a fulfilling love story but as with everything in his life he approached it with sex jokes, honesty and his whole heart. Charles has always had a big heart but he also has never wanted the twisted, boring, committed lifestyle that humans & shifters seem to want, but he’s also always been upfront about it so when Ann gets the stupid idea to have a one-night stand with him you know it’s going to start some major fireworks!

What is unexpected is that path it leads to and how quickly things escalate. Their story begins fast and furious. It keeps you hot and on the edge of your seat.

Charles has been with us since the very beginning of this series and has always been my fave! Having read this I have to to say I think I love him all the more!

I adore Ann and have loved the dynamic of their relationship since she first arrived in the books, we all knew they should be together and when we found out that Ann and Tim had hooked up in a previous book I was heartbroken for Charles and Ann because they are made for each other.

They have that fantastic balance of friendship and love, the attraction has always been glaringly obvious but a certain someone just needed to realise or was more than just lust. The sarcasm and banter between these two and the other characters litterally has you laughing out loud.

You can always expect toe curling love scenes from this series and Charles didn't dissappoint (in fact I don't think Charles is capable of causing dissappointment) And of course The Watch get to kick some bad guy ass which is always entertaining.

I really have had fun with this series and am so sad to see it end, but it's left me with a warm fuzzy feeling, I certainly wouldn't have felt this content if it had ended without a Charles book.

I do wonder if there is room for a few stories from K. F. Breene from the shifter camp, that could be fun to explore!

A bit disappointing

Very blah, especially after reading Jonas. Felt like this was just quick put together to finish it off. Which is utterly disappointing since I think, if any character deserved effort put into their happily ever after, it was Charles.

He was always there, from the very beginning, bringing laughs and love and so much more to every characters story. Why didn't Charles get an epic story for himself? There was plenty of room to develop his character even more, but not even a real background was given on the guy.

WOW!

Finally! We get to zero in on Charles who I have LOVED madly since the beginning! Sex, love, violence, intrigue, this book has it all. Only one problem, I want more! I did not want this book to end!! Now I’m faced with the knowledge that there is only one book left in this series I’m loving and totally submerged in. Ms. Breene, I sincerely hope you are working on continuing this series!

Just okay

I liked the other but didn’t like this as much! I was hoping for Ann and Charles story but it’s a little disappointing. Ann seems desperate to be with Charles while he keeps on wanting to be with others even if they were sleeping together. The last minute that he said he love her just doesn’t make sense to me. In feel that there should be more. What happens if they didn’t get stuck together? Just saying

Charles, knit me an ugly ass scarf! LOL

Loved Charles' story (even the glitter). Ahn is perfect for him.

What I didn't like is that this is the last book of the series. I would love to read more. As a reader, I don't feel the closure that I should with the ending of a series. I need at least one more!

I was slightly traumatized when I read the epilogue to Jonas and it seemed as though it was the end of the Darkness series. I cried, I stamped my foot, I lamented to all who would listen that Charles needed his own book. The Universe (and K.F. Breene) heard me.

I would dearrrrrly love to know if there was a real life inspiration for the Charles character and if he happens to be single. I have not fully loved a character this much since Logan Cross of the Dannika Dark series - and I think I love Charles a little more. It's gotta be the knitting.

We've watched Charles and Anne flirting/sniping at each other ever since their first introduction in On A Razor's Edge. I despaired of them ever consummating their attraction for one another but it was well worth the wait.

The story line was, of course, too short for me. And seeing as how it was the official end of the series, I was hoping that the epilogue would have taken place further down the road but I ended the book smiling from ear to ear and saying gooey little 'awww's' at the end. I want my own Charles! He's funny, he's sweet, he's romantic and he's a demon in the sack - everything we want and never find in a real man (everything we want and K.F. Breene is secretly hiding from us....come on, fess up, we know you have the real deal some where!).

This is not a standalone book, you must start from the beginning or you will be dearly depriving yourself of hours of Charles and laugh out loud entertainment. This is a truly remarkable series and I'm sorry it has to end but I'm glad it did before it became monotonous empty filler of so many others who should have hung up the towel on a once beloved series. I eagerly await the next book in her new Chosen series.

Fancy a Cat?

Charles is one of the best Bodyguard a girl could ever have and Sasha is that lucky girl. However Stefan, Jameson and Charles came out of High School as the three toughest guys ever to have been in their area. As they grew, Stefan became, the meanest, toughest and fairest guy the in the North West Territories and with his best friends by his side he has made his pack very strong and successful.

Now that Stefan has mated with a Human Mage with the power of Black his Pack is even stronger. Sasha has brought in many humanity that wield magic that links to her and gives her energy to last linger in Battles she thrives on.

But when the pack starts working with shifters it brings a whole new Dynamic to the situation. Ann is one of the shifters who turns into a cougar, and she’s a strong spitfire of a character who doesn’t take crap from anyone. And she goes head to toe with Charles. The banter between the two of them is hilarious and the fireworks is off the charts too!

But what happens when Anne volunteers for a dangerous mission, to find out where her people have been taken and by whom then report back to headquarters and not get caught herself. BTW Charles is elected as the bodyguard and helper on this mission to aid Ann .. But with their attraction for each other get the better of them or will they be able to keep their hands to their self and keep it business?

It’s a must read if you want the details to this exciting story and it’s a short read too. Truly recommend reading it.
Am off to read the next book and will talk to you in the next review.

Charles is ... the charming immature idiot.
Like, the guy who is super hot but has personality - the guy we've probably all encountered who got away with a lot more than anyone else would've reasonably been able to do.
But! He's also quite sweet and has hidden depths.

There's also the fact that he and Ann have been dancing around each other/slowly coming to this point since the time Ann was first introduced in the series. (He transferred from Sasha to Ann quickly cuz hello do not want to piss of Stefan.)

All that being said ... Charles is a manchild. A manbaby, even. Granted he's ... really young. O_o like in terms of his [race] probably early 20s? So on the one hand I'm annoyed with his "I'll never mate/don't want to settle down" but on the other hand I'm like "he's basically like 21 in this book, right? Then it's REASONABLE he doesn't want to get married just yet..."

He's not lacking sexual experience etc, so there's no fear of "missing out" just the "well it's not done" - and the low key fear of responsibility. And fear of letting someone important down emotionally.

The whole Mata [shifters] being taken plays a big role/the danger there forces him to quickly realize/think out his shit.

The fact that I remember this book and what happens - from Charles and Ann being sent to scope out the facility, their time in the cabin, Ann being taken... to the end - their date...
Says a lot.

Solid C read

This review is for the WHOLE SERIES

This entire series is great! Stephan and Sasha have amazing chemistry. Charles and Jonas have a special spot in my soul. Don't even get me going on all the other side characters.

This series has a dark romance aspect to a point. However what paranormal/supernatural series doesn't.

The main part of the series follows Stephan and Sasha's meeting and initial 'relationship' (you'll understand the quotes when you read it) in the first book, and as the books progress it gets deeper... There are battles, dark forces, magic learned, life or death situations. Plenty of action, adventure, heartache and of course... SPICE. I won't rate spice because everyone sees it differently. There's stalking behavior, kidnap-ish behavior, and definitely touch her and die feels as well. By the end of Sasha and Stephan's books in the series I was BEGGGGGGGGGGINNNG for Charles and Jonas, let me say, NONE of these books disappointed me. The only issue I think I had was with time jumping. That being said, it makes sense now with how many books there ended up being.

If it says ANYTHING to anyone, I read these in 2014 and am just doing the review 10 years later and can still remember them... Every.. last... one of them. They were so captivating, I devoured 1 a day until I finished them all.

I love Charles! I will say, although I had already purchased this book, I was reluctant to read it because I did not want Charles emotionally hurt. I had noticed in the last two books that they moved forward quickly, aging the babies. Charles has always been a constant in Sasha's life. In this life anyway. With everyone getting mates, families and homes, I knew Charles would be alone. I know living in the Mansion, he couldn't possibly be alone, but he and Sasha had created a family. I did end up enjoying the story. Great battles, per usual. I will say I hoped he would not end up with Ann. I did not really like her from the beginning. I always felt she was too needy a female among all the strong ones. Ann always took too many risks. Tim had them on lockdown for a reason and she would sneak off. The European shifter was able to get access to Sasha's car because Ann needed her car to break the rules. I wanted someone else for Charles. I knew early on that they would be together because he commented on her dates. In any event, the story was riveting. I don't feel everything was tied up in this book. Perhaps in Jameson's story. I do recommend this book and the entire series.

Charles oh my Charles. You have been a favorite since book 1 and your story is my favorite of the series. With two characters like Charles and Ann, the book was bound to be awesome and it was that and more. KF Breene did not disappoint with his story. Aaaaah just loved it. This story ticked all the right boxes.

Humor was obviously to be expected and was there in spades with these two.
Hot hot sex. Charles has moves and boy he moved me. Wowzer those two can steam up the kindle. They danced beautifully together 😍😍😍
Pulsing action that had you rooting for our favorites. Charles magic powered up nicely.
Having the whole gang in action was also awesome.
Character development of Charles over the course of the Darkness books has always been there, even though the focus was always Sasha. So this story is the final blossoming of the previous ones and he did not fail. Romance level on another level.

I loved this book for all of the above and just simply because it was Charles and Ann. They have wonderful chemistry together, snarky with one another, and individually they are both powerful, but as a couple, they are almost on Sasha and Stefan level.
