Battle for The Dark King #1

Three Deadly Trials

Rate this book
A dark fae king, three deadly trials, and a forbidden passion that could destroy everything . . .

Fae exist only in stories told to children, or so I thought.

That was before I woke up with a seven-pointed star branded into the flesh of my inner wrist.

You see, everything changed when a nightmarish creature of the Fae Realm dropped into my life like a bad ex-boyfriend. He claimed the mark on my skin signified my magical lineage, the bit of DNA my mother passed down and never thought to mention before disappearing a decade ago.

Now, he was here to collect her descendant—and the options were me—or my baby sister.

There was no way in hell I would let Ava get wrapped in something like this, so I step up. Days after I arrive in the Fae Realm, I’m thrown into a series of trials titled ‘The Devotion’. An extremely elevated, and beyond twisted dating game of sorts, the Fae use to wed off their royalty. I’m not interested in being anyone’s forced-bride, so I’ll do what I can to bide my time until I can haul ass out of here.

Now, no-magic-me, is supposed to compete with demons, vampires, elves, and more, who want to claim their place at the future king’s side. I have no interest in this guy, but it doesn’t help that the king-to-be is a gorgeous, brooding fae, named Rowan Blaive. He’s dominant, commanding, and everything I shouldn’t want.

But the longer I’m here, the more I’m questioning everything—including my own heart.

A sexy new series perfect for fans of: Trial by Fae, Dark King, Power of Five, Half-Blood Academy, King of The Fae, Bound to The Battle God, and Stolen by The Fae King!

Wow, that was quite

Wow, that was quite a ride. With its twists and turns, once you think you know what’s going to happen, bam... you’re wrong. I’m looking forward to the next book. I hope it’s as wonderful as this one is.

Not a great start to the new year, sadly.

I like faeries a lot, but this was basically just slapping "fae" on top of a vaguely magical creature and calling it Seelie. Rowan could have been any supernatural creature--the lack of development and world building was thus.

Outside of the many formatting and editing issues (like the fact that the author thinks that line breaks happen per sentence when they're used to show a shift in the speaker) that made the book hard to read because it interrupted the flow to make me constantly go back and go "Oh, no, Eden's still talking", the story was bare bones and rapid fire, trying to emulate the standard hit points without putting any work in. Eden loves her sister, she's sassy, she gets immediately horny for a guy who hasn't exactly been nice, the guy lusts for her in return and eventually this makes him nice, they fuck one and then sudden drama, Eden is perfect at everything she does, she saves her family, she wins the trials, but oh no, more sudden conflict to drag it into another book.

Everything happens way too quickly just to toss in another moment of lust or a moment of drama. I care about no one in this story and the plot is told without being shown. Backstories are skipped over, relationships are suddenly in existence without development...

I feel like the author wanted to write a fantasy in that this book is her fantasy; combining the tropes and scenes she likes from romantic fantasy books into a super fast paced, boiled down little book that cuts out everything but the bare essentials to get the job done.

I was about 40% when I was pretty sure I was going to hate this book and that finishing would be unpleasant. It was. I considered quitting about 55% in, but didn't want my first attempt of the year to be a DNF'd title. Maybe things pick up more in book #2, but I have no interest in finding out because nothing was adequately established in this book. No worthwhile ideas, no interesting characters, no engaging plot, just a book that wasn't well done.

I'm trying to think of something nice to say, but outside of the competent enough English, there's nothing to really recommend or commend this title. It's like a 1.5 star because I've still read worse? I know this is the author's debut, but there's still a lot of work to be done in terms of her finding her stride. I'd suggest trying to focus on a relationship developing out of shared experiences and conversations, not the most intense, irresistible desire to have sex with one another they've ever experienced.

Anyone else getting "Witcher" vibes from the male on this cover.... *shivers* Lol. 2.5?- 3ish stars for me. I say that because I liked it enough to probably continue this series to see whats going down, but there were also several things that grated at me. I think the main thing was that the fast paced nature of the book left off so many explanations that would really have added a richness and depth to this story that could have made it so much more phenomenal. The FMC is thrown into the plot with a wham, bam, thank you ma'am and then left rode hard and put up wet. While she handles it well.. I guess?.. There really needed to be way more details to the backstory and world building, as well as answers to the FMC's questions. Which by the way, seemed totally legit, but we instead get these "I can't tell you/explain any of that stuff" vibes from everyone. Makes no sense why you wouldn't take the time right then to give some deets and further suck the reader into the world but instead we just kind of get left hanging. We have no idea about this Fae world. Why is everyone fighting anyway? Why is everyone so divided? Why is everyone scarfing down the hatertots for witches? Why was the FMC in the human world to begin with? Why does everyone hate empaths?

Insta connection... yea the FMC and the MMC have some explosive chemistry which doesn't honestly make sense. I'm actually a fan of several bully romances so the MMC's overbearing and hateful attitude didn't phase me even the slightest.. however, the lack of explanation for that attitude as well as everyone's attitude toward "witches", as well as the freaking 180 the guy pulls out of nowhere from hate to love was completely jarring as well as totally unbelievable. I feel like if the author would have spent time not only explaining the hatred but allowing the chemistry to bring the two MC's closer together in a more natural way that the story would have flowed so much better.

For a brief, and I mean blink and you might miss it, interval we were headed into the dreaded Bermuda love triangle. This also didn't make much sense.. because there wasn't any explanations and enough details as well as chemistry between these two. I mean what happened? Kind of gave me some smh vibes that the author spent time on even starting up something there, only to swiftly bap it away before really giving it any depth or focus.

Soooo as you can see I was torn between some 2-3ish for this book.. but I really do want to see if any of this starts making more sense maybe the author was just in a hurry to get to the "meat" of this world and the next one will totally bring it? We will see.

I'm having that feeling that I've just discovered a gem.

Getting a blend of:
ACOTAR,
The Selection,
The Hunger Games.

So basically this book is like the selection but it takes place in a fae court with demons and sirens and witches, and some truly wonderful characters and a heart-stopping romance!

I want to kill Nija so bad though. She shows up and ruins EVERYTHING *gets up and looks for sword*

Im not really sure what i just read..... I take my Hat off to any person who can publish a book... But... This wasn't for me.......

The cover
The cover looks like we have a dark haired beauty with a Fae/Elf that could give Henry Cavill in Witcher a run for his money, its also initially why i picked the book fantastic cover and utterly misleading (huge pet peeve of mine) In actual fact Rowan has "Black Curls" and Eden has waist length red Mane......

Any Pivotal moment that happens has no background and no leadup or Build....
Eden all of a sudden getting powers without Rhyme or reason they just happened and she seems to master them in a matter of days.

The Language is a mix of Old English, American slang and The odd Fuck off thrown about.

The romance Between Rowan and Eden

Umm..... She hates him then all of a sudden she doesn't (again no reason why) and they are having sex....
About as much chemistry as a T.rex has to a cruciferous vegetable if im being honest.....

The Steam

Well most love scenes has me keeling over... as her "Mons" (i thought this was slang for knees as never heard it called that before) Got explored By Rowans "Dick"

so the comedy factor was there... the characters were not very likable and very one dimensional.

And the Audio... whenever it was a Male speaking they spoke slow and Monotonous.....

The story that was there could have been really built on, there was something there in the story but it got engulfed by everything else

I wanted to like this book but the guy who seems to be the love interest is a Fae Lord who literally takes control of her body randomly to force things on her. He is always grabbing her and not letting her go when she is saying she doesn't want it because "he can smell her desire" It is gross and triggered me hard. Not sure exactly what the writer was going for but I just feel sick and horrible. If you are sensitive to people being forced into sexual things like I am do not read this book.

This was a 3.5 star read for me, but I rounded.

I have read a few "you must prove yourself worthy of me in a challenge" books and at some point, you can't help compare them. A year or two ago, this may have been a 4.5 star read for me, but I'm coming to expect a bit more, I think. I liked the story overall, but at times it seemed a bit thin and although in the beginning the two WANTED to dislike each other, they were very quick to break out the "L" word and it felt a bit insta. I know that may be credited to the whole empath thing, but the relationship felt very rushed.

Meh

The story has the potential for something great, but..::it fell flat with story telling. The story had some many jumps in the plot that I had to reread paragraphs to make sure I was following. The heroine as times was strong but she was super emotional and cried a lot which got over my nerves. In addition, the prince’s feeling were all over the place with no explanation. I don’t have it in me to read the next story and torture myself.

Not bad

This was ok, though I felt it could have been great. Parts were choppy, some parts were rushed and things didn't quite flow. The idea was good but something was missing. There were some great characters, especially the villan, but I thought for a Fae Lord, he came across as weak and the relationship was almost instant and for me, in this book, it just didn't work. I would say, if you like The Fae, give it a try, it may be what your looking for.

Tried so hard to like this book, put it down and came back to it several times but the storyline progressed way too slowly and the main characters attraction to the anti-hero (or asshole) of the book makes no sense as he consistently treats her like shit yet she somehow still finds him appealing. Wouldnt recommend if you prefer a book to get interesting before the 150th page!

So necessarily think that this book was bad it was just extremely........ Basic and predictable and the writing was a bit juvenile I guess. If it was maybe 10 to 15 years ago I probably would have really liked it but there was no real world development or character development and the connection and I guess you can call it relationship between the two main characters just did not seem in any way real or authentic and it really just did not make sense. Sadly because of all of these reasons I will not be reading the second book because it's just not worth it.

The story had potential, but it kind of got lost amongst all the smut. The three deadly trials only had 2 or 3 pages dedicated to each one, most of everything else was just smut. I think the trials should have gone on a lot longer and there should also have been a lot more interaction between the contestants. For instance I would really have liked more time spent on Eden and Pimia's friendship. I do like Eden as a character, she is extremely kind. Even though this wasn't the best book I've ever read, I think the story has promise, so I'll continue the series.

The female narrator may have contributed to me not liking this story.
But - it was kind of shitty no matter who read it...

I will definitely not continue this series.

Well I dont know what I feel to be honest about this book. In parts I liked it and in some I didn't! Maybe rushed in parts.... considering that Eden is kidnapped and taken to the Fae realm not knowing or fully understands why or what she is...she doesnt ask enough questions about her situation, she just gets on with it regardless!
Not a bad storyline but feel like it left me with questions  more than anything. Will get the  next installment as I want to see what happens and to see if all my questions get answered.

WHY DOES THE COVER NOT MATCH THE CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS? I HATE IT.
He is supposed to have black curly hair and she is supposed to have red hair.

I enjoyed Three Deadly Trials, but the bad editing grammatical errors drove me absolutely crazy. There were some things that I definitely have issues with, however. It is reminiscent of an S. J. Mass Book and The Selection.

The grammatical errors make it a little hard to understand what is going on and it has the feeling of a rough draft. I feel like the world building was lacking. There was a lot going on and very little of it was explained and there were unanswered questions. Eden is a bit annoying, because she just goes along with whatever is happening and doesn't ask enough questions. She is taken from the human realm by a demon and thrown into this competition for the Prince Rowan's hand in another realm. She takes the existence of Fae, sirens, witches, and demons incredibly well. She believes whatever she is told, doesn't really question further, and is almost immediately okay with it. Another thing I do not like its that the relationships seem instantaneous. They go from having this antagonistic relationship with some serious chemistry to all of a sudden loving each other. There is also the fact that Rowan is f*cking Nija. She doesn't even really get jealous. I feel like it takes a bit away from Eden and Rowan's relationship. Also, I feel like the story line was a little rushed- too much happening and not enough explanations.

All in all, though, it was a fun read and I will definitely be picking up book 2. I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book!

I hate characters that are are illogical and contradicting. Her father is dying and she takes on the roll of mother for her younger sister, so one would think this character is being written as someone strong and enduring trials and tribulations.Someone capable of rolling up their sleves and doing what has to be done by being self sacrificing .Also being traumatized about her mother leaving when she was a child could have been a huge driving force for the plot.

But nope, only minor concern peppered with a mini amount of guilt once she is whisked away into magic elf realm which would have maybe just maybe been in her character to URGENTLY inquire after her mother or desperately try to find a way to save her father who moments earlier she found doesn’t have long to live because hey now your a witch and magic exists, but instead this emotional driving force is a sub plot. Instead she likes getting treated like shit and blah blah blah, until magically the male lead becomes not an ass anymore. I just wish this author would have made the lead more realistic and not so pathetic. The story could have been good if it wasn’t constantly diverted into excuses for the main character to rub up against one another. Such a frustrating read.
Also who are the characters on the cover? In the book Rowan has darker skin and black curly hair and the girl has crimson hair. If you can’t even care about that detail why the fuck are you writing a book.

Okay, so, let’s have a little chat about this book.

Usually, I try to be as positive as I can in reviews, so, here’s my positive: the concept is great. I felt as if the summary really drew me in and lead me wanting to read it. However, I do not think that there was the deliverance there. With only two hundred pages in this Kindle edition, there really isn’t too much space, and even Eden’s introduction to being a witch was incredibly rushed. She kind of just accepted it and got on with it in a few chapters whilst live changing revelations were hurdling in front of her as if they were nothing?

I hate to say it, because I hate to be that person, but, honestly, I felt as if the book was 20% plot, 80% sensuality and it could’ve done with being the other way around to fit everything in that the author was trying to.

Yeah, I just... I can’t recommend this, I’m sorry! There is a book with a very similar concept that I may give a go to see if that fulfils the excitement that I had when originally finding out about this book, but we’ll see.

Not good..

I like the plot but I don't care for the h who is screwing another women beside the mc. Don't get how being all powerful king he can't fight against his f~buddy. The mc didn't think nothing of his sexting the other women since it was just a transaction. Really? The mc is always being beaten up too.

The ending is why this gets one star. It was so ridiculous how the h went back to the other women after she tried to kill the mc. The only good thing about this book was how it got me so angry how it ended. What a wasted read with a very bad ending. Don't read this book if you don't care for cheating and with clueless and weak mc female. Not enough depth on the characters either.

Very entertaining!

I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamic between the characters and all the ordeals they were put through.

I good enemies to lovers storyline with harsh childhoods.

Only issues I have are that the cover art doesn’t depict the characters correctly at all and then all of the grammatical errors throughout the whole book.

Still with that being said I can’t wait to read the next one!

Almost got there...

Good start, bad execution. Got all the goosebumps and anxiety in place until the 70% of it... then it got mockingbird felling so clearly that got predictable.
The prince was powerful but weak in a way that he couldn’t fight for his love. The friend/ teacher was almost a rapist/obsessed guy and she was still thrusting him. And I thought she was not strong enough and went submissive too quickly.... everything went too quickly even the LoveMeHate.

Things that made me questioning (spoiler alert):

1. She was on the second trial and Scott gave her a protection charm even though it was against the rules. She used it and nothing really indicated that it really worked and she lost at the fall in the cave (apparently). No one questioned the broken spell that keep them fr dying ... if everyone could watch the trial because of the crystals, why no one saw it coming? Or had evidences of the Demon misconduct?
2. Why put the obvious, the demon in that case, as the villain?
3. The Demon at the last trial tell all he misdeed and crimes and nothing was done.... Not even eden use it to her advantage.
4. Eden trusted everyone too easily on a place that she didn’t know much and was know to be untrustworthy. She knew that was a competition...
5. We barely had an insight of eden’s adversaries...? So who was whom? What they could do?
6. The worst is when the Demon say she killed the siren and REALLYYYYY NOTHING WAS DONE! Not even was mentioned after.

Maybe it will be more on the second book... but still too much to say but nothing really said and done. Like give a promise of one free week in Disneyland and get only a ticket to the neighborhood movie theater.
