A harrowing, yet inspiring true story of a young girl's abusive childhood, from new author Denise Richardson. Denise endured emotional and physical cruelty and molestation at the hands of her mother and her drunken boyfriends. In an environment full of toxic emotions and violence, her survival depended on navigating daily, a safe passage through the basest of human behaviours. An absent, paedophilic father could not be trusted, and her older brother fled, as soon as he was able. Alone, in this domestic battlefield, she faced an unpredictable psychotic mother, regular beatings and torture, all against a backdrop of fear that she would be killed. But throughout Denise kept alive dreams of escaping. This book covers the early years of her life and is an affecting and inspirational book of the horrors of child abuse and the steadfast determination of one child to survive.
Cruel: One child's story to survive, is Denise Richardson's first book and it has taken twenty years for her to finally share the inspiring story of her harrowing childhood. Despite inauspicious beginnings, Denise has enjoyed careers as a nurse, a police officer, and was a successful business executive.
In many ways, this is a remarkable book. The author (Denise Richardson) has managed to balance the horror of her childhood through the lense of time, wisdom and forgiveness. In places, it is utterly heartbreaking and the gripping nature of her story made it difficult to put down. The book is a page-turner, for all the right reasons.
Her story is a triumph of the human spirit and keenly demonstrates what can be done, if we only truly believe in ourselves. I understand the author is a coach, mentor for young girls and public speaker: I suspect her workshops, like her book are inspiring and possibly life-altering.
Young girl, lived with her abusive, alcoholic Mother. She and her brother, were both treated horribly. However, she got away from her Mom. The lessons she learned, growing up, helped her to persevere and succeed.
I can't remember where I heard of this book-it might have been advertised, or perhaps came up as a Hot New Release in memoirs on amazon? I had added it to my list, noticed when it was on a promo, and grabbed a copy. I have many many kindle books where I have stocked them up like this, and it is usually quite some time later when I get to them. This book 'pulled me' and I ended up reading it straight after I got it.
The author suffered neglect and abuse at the hands of her parents, so this made quite harrowing reading-especially in the earlier stages-quite upsetting reading about the horrible treatment of the family pets. Just awful. At that point, I did hesitate to read on-but I'm glad I did, because this became a fast moving read, and I wanted to find out that Denise would come through everything.
This is a good read. There are some tense scenes, eg some of the situations the young Denise has to find when she comes home from school, awful circumstances. There were a few errors-fairly accurate though. I just didn't like the animal/pet chapter-but this is what her mum did, she can't change it. Despicable human beings.
Sometimes I struggle with these harrowing tales-but remember, they have gone through this- we're just reading about it. Why do we read them? Because the end is usually uplifting, as it is here; they made something of their life, they lived to tell the tale. And then lived, instead of their previous existing.
I am an adult survivor of child abuse and abandonment. I very rarely read tragic stories because they make me feel angry and hopeless for the person involved, however Denises' story is different. She went through an absolutely awful time as a child with a dangerous psychotic alcoholic mother who obviously had no capacity to love the precious children born to her, however instead of destroying Denise it made her stronger, more resilient, kinder and determined to succeed in her life. This story hit me hard not only because of my own experiences but because I presently have a daughter of 14 who I adore and cannot imagine for the life of me her fearing for her life everyday as Denise had to at such an important and difficult stage in life. I admit the tears did fall. I wish Denise all the best in her life, love and happiness and joy for all her days and I want to thank her for sharing her story with me and I know it will stay with me for the longest time. An amazing story of a little girl lost who beat the odds and came through as a wonderful, successful, well grounded, emotionally mature and stable woman.
To say that I enjoyed this book would be a lie. For it's content anyway. No one should have to be subject to this kind of abuse, for any reason. It is unfortunately all to common, thankfully not as much as when this took place, yet still. Other than some grammatical issues this is a well written memoir that must have been a heart-wrenching reminder for the author. That though, in and of itself is some of the strongest therapy there is. This becomes quite evident in the way Ms. Richardson seems to have framed her life. To take all of that negativity growing up and channel it into such a positive outcome for not only her own life but the lives of others. I would indeed commend her on her strength and humility. Highly recommended.
This woman is truly inspirational. The last few pages of her story made me think and helped me with some of my own struggles I currently have. While I nowhere near went through the pain and suffering Denise did, it just goes to show that she is right when saying we can all learn something from each other. Denise you are an amazing human being and I am rooting for you every step of the way.
This book was absolutely gripping—I couldn’t put it down! The writing style made it incredibly easy and quick to read, keeping me engaged from start to finish. Despite the chapters being quite long, the pacing was smooth, and the story flowed effortlessly. The author’s ability to build suspense and maintain intrigue throughout made this a highly enjoyable read. Perfect for anyone looking for an engaging book that’s both accessible and absorbing!
It is almost unbelievable what parents do to their children! That Denise survived her childhood is amazing, but she was a very resourceful girl, and refused to let her horrible upbringing limit her. She was able to forgive her parents and move on to a life of peace and fulfillment. She is amazing!
If for some reason you are feeling sorry for yourself, then I recommend reading this book. One of the most inspirational books I have read. I feel ten foot tall and bullet-proof. The is a true story that illustrates that your upbringing, regardless of whether it’s good, bad, or indifferent can shape your life for the better. Thank-you Denise!
What a story, gripping read from start to finish. A true inspiration that shows behaviour doesn't breed behaviour. Denise Richardson you should be amazingly proud.
I loved this book! It is heartbreaking yet inspiring, I cried, smiled and felt proud. It just goes to show that no matter what, being kind, courageous, resilient and brave always wins!
a good read how a young girl is brought up by an abusive alcoholic mother ,she manages to get away and lives in a children's home ,and managed to turn her life into a successful happy one while forgiving those that give her an unhappy start in.life well done
A great book. Had me thinking all the way to the end. Clear and easy to read. Only disappointed in the ending, it didn't mention if she married or had a family. 4/5 for that reason
I will be thinking about Denise for a long time!! To survive such a horrific childhood and be the adult she is today …..? Amazing! My heart is with you Denise. You are a wonderful example of tenacity!!
Finished this book in tears. What a remarkable true life story. The resilience and strength Denise has despite all the things she went through as a child is inspiring and very touching. A definite must read!
I thought this was a good read, fascinating insight on a child's upbringing with an alcoholic mother and violent father and how she came out the other end.
Wow what a harrowing and difficult childhood this lady had. It is fantastic to hear that she turned her life around and made it. She has achieved so much and is an inspiration
