Brian Michael Bendis

A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.

Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.

Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.

Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.

Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.

Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.

He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.

Bendis continues his output of solid fun.

Just another great set of stories in this run. I will say that I am a little split on 2/3 of it kind of being just… stuff that happens to Peter Parker/Spider-Man instead of being plots with clear focus, but I think it works to it’s favor.

I really like the crossover with the X-Men, even if it’s brief and they don’t really do much of anything, but the personal drama sprinkled throughout this book is great, the usual dichotomy of Peter's life is played to full effect.

I am a little bit disappointed at the ending, as it shapes up to be sort of a retelling of the classic stone tablet saga from the 616 Universe, but it kind of ends up being a nothing burger, even if it has solid moments here and there.

Bagley's art is as solid as ever, no complaints there.

Overall, a good time and great continuation of Bendis's run.

Pretty fun little read. Some of the artwork hasn't aged the best, and the dialogue can be a little rough at times, but I appreciate the "real world" of the Ultimate Universe. Even if the companies and fashion is reeeally dated to the early 2000s, it still feels a little more grounded than fantasy. Peter Parker isn't a nerd like in 616 continuity, but he still has all of the other problems of balancing super-hero and normal life. Kingpin is a formidable foe who is great at pulling strings. Excited for more!

Story: fun; misogyny: rank

Looking forward to hopefully less intentionally exposed stomachs whenever I read some more recent comics. Not to mention the weird excerpt at the end about the joys of drawing a woman in full black leather who seems to want to seduce a minor. Yikes.
