A Chronicle of life with an insane parent. I wrote this because I wanted those who feel silenced, and alone to speak up. I flew on the back of a brilliant woman who soared high and fell low. often crashing but often inspiring me to take chances that I might otherwise not. I was with her every painful step of the way, and I witnessed unbridled mental brilliance and deeply disturbing moments that shaped my fragile psyche as a child. It was a strange and beautiful ride, that scared me and, yet inspired me. It left me bewildered but in complete wonderment of the world around me. You can let Mental Illness define you, or you can help define Mental Illness. You are not to blame, and there is no shame.
"Something is wrong with Janet" is a fascinating and poignant memoir! very well written, It takes you right into the author's feelings which are sometimes intense and always subtly explained. Actually, this book is not exactly about mental illness; it's more subtle than that: it deals with the consequences that mental illness might have on relatives. How can we not be moved by this child, by this young man who loves his family but who is also the collateral victim of his mother's insanity. For the author, writing this book was certainly a way to heal, as he explains in his conclusion: "Putting the words on paper, although difficult has been therapeutic for me"... and I I fully understand him, because it was the same for me when I wrote my own memoir, Kellcey. And for the reader, it's a fantastic and heartbreaking experience! I Really love this book and I strongly recommend it and give it a five star!
Wow. This was a hard read due to the material about a woman who had bipolar disorder as my own mother had the same. The ups and downs are crazy, same with mine. As a kid, we didn't know my mother was mentally ill. We thought she was like all mothers. Once older, we then knew. I so understand this book intently. Putting the words down is therapeutic. There are punctuation issues but they don't detract from the story.
Thaddeus Arizona has thrown open the doors of his life with Something Is Wrong With Janet. He takes a hard an unbiased look at his life and the difficulty that mental illness brought to it. I found this to be a book that had meaning for many of us struggling in this stressful time.
