After college, Tina worked as a NJ Deputy Attorney General, a patent attorney, and a mechanical engineer. Her love of reading fiction for pleasure helped her get through years of academia. Her law cases inspired an inquiring mind of crime, and since then, Tina has been hooked on mysteries. Every December, Ocean Crest, New Jersey, hosts a polar bear plunge as a fund raiser, and this year it is raising money for a much-needed renovation for the senior center. Most of the businesses in the town are participating, and Lucy Berberian is representing her family’s Kebab Kitchen restaurant. As expected, the water is chilly, but all that is soon forgotten when the dead body of one of the participants washes ashore. At first everyone assumes that the shock of the cold water killed Deacon Spooner, but the medical examiners determines that it was murder. Lucy had recently met Deacon, and he wasn’t a nice man. When the police look at Lucy’s friend as their prime suspect, she can’t help but nose around. She uncovers plenty of motives and opportunity, but who actually killed the man?
The book starts out strong, but it loses its way, with very little forward movement and a sub-plot taking over as we near the climax. Fortunately, we do get a logical and suspenseful ending. The sub-plot, about Lucy dragging her feet planning her wedding, would have made sense if it had been weeks between books instead of months. Still, it did allow us to see some growth in Lucy and in her relationships, which I appreciated. The book isn’t overwhelming with Christmas, but it is there, and I enjoyed that aspect as well. We get four recipes at the end of the book to enjoy later. While the book could have been stronger, as a fan of the series, I’m glad I read it.
I am continuing to enjoy the Kebab Kitchen Mystery series and this is a great addition with a murder mystery for Lucy and her best friend, Katie to solve. Lucy manages her family's restaurant, Kebab Kitchen, in Ocean Crest on the Jersey shore after working for several years as an attorney in Philadelphia. She has also reunited with her former boyfriend, Azad, who is the head chef for the restaurant. They are now engaged and Katie is pushing Lucy to get into wedding plans. It is just before Christmas and a Polar Bear Plunge in the ocean is scheduled to raise money for the Senior Center and most businesses are represented with swimmers/plungers. When an very unpopular man is found drowned during the event, Lucy and Katie's friend, Susan Cutie, owner of a bakery is charged with his murder but she is one of many who had problems with the man. Of course, Lucy and Katie have to find the real killer and they have many suspects to sift through. Lots of sleuthing takes place while some wedding talks go on. We read about yummy foods sprinkled throughout as well. This is a great mystery that kept me guessing. I did have an idea of the killer but was still not sure and enjoyed the read. I received a complimentary ARC from Kensington Books through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.
Bundle up for this one. Lucy Berberian and her BFF Katie are taking part in the Polar Bear Plunge to raise money for the renovation of the Senior Center. They plunged into the frigid ocean waves along with about 40 other Ocean Crest residents and business owners and it did not go swimmingly. One plunger didn’t make it out alive. Reception hall co-owner Deacon Spooner’s dead body washed up on the beach from an apparent drowning. It wasn’t the chill in the air and water that took the man down, no, it was MURDER and one of Lucy’s friends is the prime suspect. Wedding cake baker Susie Cutie had a beef with the man but would she murder him? Lucy doesn’t think so. She met the man once and while not wishing him dead, she couldn’t stand him. He must have pushed someone else over the edge. She just needs to find out who . . .
Mistletoe, Moussaka, and Murder is the 5th book in the series and the characters feel like old friends. Lucy and Asad are now engaged to be married and Kate is trying her best to get Lucy’s wedding planning on track like any good Matron of Honor would do. Her parents, Angela and Raffi, now retired still help out at the restaurant when needed and Lucy’s cooking lessons with her mom continue. It’s the holiday season so all of them are making plans for the Christmas party at the Kebab Kitchen for all the Ocean Crest merchants. These characters are so genuine and engaging, people I would like to meet and spend more time with. I grew up in a family-run restaurant business and everything sans the murders rings true to life. I am also loving the relationship between Lucy and her landlord Eloisa, her infatuation with Azad, and the way he handles it is so funny.
Ms. Kashian has a great descriptive writing style. She takes us to the Jersey Shore with its snow-covered sand, the frigid temperatures of the ocean, the sound of a band playing under the boardwalk, the food at the Kabab Kitchen, a lovely Victorian B&B, and more. The food, moussaka to cupcakes and pies, the party attire, and a certain wedding dress are so easy to visualize.
The murder mystery was very well-plotted. Deacon Spooner was not a nice man so there were several viable suspects. I had pared down my guesses to two when the tension really picks up. The big reveal was very exciting and Yes! one of my guesses turned out to be right!
I look forward to each and every visit to Ocean Crest, New Jersey. Lucy and her family never fail to keep me totally entertained. Mistletoe, Moussaka, and Murder sure didn’t disappoint. I enjoyed every bit of this story. Will the next book include a wedding? I can’t wait to find out!
Why yes, I did read book 5 of this cozy mystery series before I read any of the previous books! Did it stop me from understanding what was going on? No! Did I still enjoy book 5 without having read 1-4? Why yes I did.
I am not much of a cozy mystery reader these days. Yes, I did go through a big Agatha Christie phase in junior high and early high school. But, I can probably count the cozy mysteries I've read on 2 hands. So, what made me pick up this one? Um, I like Moussaka!
So, this book is set in the town of Ocean Crest on the Jersey Shore. Lucy Berberian is the manager of her family's restaurant Kebab Kitchen. She and her best friend Katie sign up for the town's Polar Bear Plunge. The thing is, a local venue owner, is found drowned after the Plunge. The police determine that it was a murder but no one saw who did it. Lucy dusts off her amateur sleuthing skills and starts poking around town to figure out who the culprit is. It turns out a lot of people had an axe to grind with the dead man.
This was a fun read set just before Christmas so it checks a few boxes: holiday read, beach setting, food (!!!), and stress-free read. The scenes set at Kebab Kitchen made me want to go out and get some Mediterranean food. Lucy was a likable character and the town seemed like a sweet place. I may try to get my hands on some other books in this series.
Thank you to the publisher for a review copy of this book!
When a disagreeable venue owner is killed during the annual Polar Plunge, Lucy adds investigating to her already busy schedule of managing her family's middle eastern restaurant while planning her wedding. All the best cozy series have a distinct sense of place and an engaging cast of characters and this series has accomplished this from the first book through this one. Lucy's resolute and inquisitive without being foolhardy. A totally enjoyable visit to the Jersey shore. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
For me, each new book in the Kebab Kitchen Mysteries is better than the one before. MISTLETOE, MOUSSAKA, AND MURDER is no different. Author Tina Kashian writes these characters so well, I feel like I'm with family while I read. WIth a great mystery that had me stumped until the reveal, this Christmas cozy checked off everything on my list!

Review:
The characters are well rounded and well rounded. Lucy and Katie agree to doing a Polar Bear Plunge to benefit the renovations for the senior center. It will be easy, in and out of the frigid water, all for a good cause. What’s not so easy is the dead body that is found floating in the water. Now Lucy and Katie have to find who killed Deacon, the reception hall owner. Between the two of them, along with Lucy’s landlord, Eloisa, they will have their work cut out for them. Eloisa is a fiesty senior citizen and brings a lot of humor to the story.
The author is very talented in her descriptive writing, and through most of the book,I felt like I was right there, watching all the action taking place, whether it was plunging into the ocean or checking out wedding venues. The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read. The mystery was well plotted and not that easy to solve. I thought I had it figured out but I was wrong!!!!
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. Maybe the next book will have the wedding.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.
Mistletoe, Moussaka, and Murder by Tina Kashian has Lucy Berberian gearing up for the holiday season at Kebab Kitchen. Lucy is participating in the Polar Bear Plunge with her best friend, Katie Watson because the proceeds are benefiting the local senior center. It is a madhouse when everyone hits the water which is a balmy 46 degrees and one man does not make it out alive. Deacon Spooner, co-owner of Sea View, was drowned. When Susan Cutie of Cutie’s Cupcakes is accused of the crime, Lucy sets out to prove the woman’s innocence. Mistletoe, Moussaka, and Murder can be read as a standalone if you are new to A Kebab Kitchen Mystery series. The book contains good writing and it is well plotted. I did find the pacing a little slow in places. There are lovely descriptions of the town decked out in all its holiday finery. Lucy has become engaged to Azad Zakarian, the head chef at Kebab Kitchen. It has not been announced publicly nor has Lucy set a date for the wedding. Her best friend, Katie is pushing Lucy to pick a venue, theme, dress, or perhaps a date. Lucy loves Azad, but there is something holding her back (they are meant for each other). Of course, Deacon Spooner’s pompous attitude and high prices did not help matters. When Susan Cutie becomes the prime suspect in Deacon Spooner’s death, Lucy with her trusty sidekick, Katie begins asking questions. There are a few suspects since Spooner was not a nice man. I picked out who I thought was the guilty party early in the book and then waited to see if I was right. There are good clues to help readers solve the whodunit. There is, of course, plenty of food talk in Mistletoe, Moussaka, and Murder. There are four recipes at the end for lemon meringue pie, Perfect Pilaf, holiday pretzel treats, and Azad’s moussaka. Mistletoe, Moussaka, and Murder is a cheery cozy mystery with holiday house hop, matrimonial machinations, Christmas cheer, a polar plunge, seashells, seagulls, and snow.
This is an entertaining holiday addition to this series. At the heart, this series is about family and being 1/2 Italian and 1/4 Irish/Scottish I can certainly relate to a loud, passionate family whose gatherings center around food. Lucy and her family remind me a lot of my own and that always adds to the entertainment. There is also a strong friendship between Lucy and Katie that is the type of friendship we all hope to have in our lives. That best friend that is always there for you. Lucy is such a warm, caring character and she is very relatable. Her relationship with Azad is coming along nicely, and I wouldn't be surprised if we see a book in the near future centered around Lucy solving a mystery before she can walk down the aisle.
The mystery really kept me guessing in this installment. The victim was the type of person who had enemies and people were not sorry to see him go. There are plenty of suspects, with motives, but it was hard for me to pin down who I thought had the strongest motive and could commit the murder. In the end, I was surprised at the identity of the killer and how Lucy stumbled across this person's identity.
I will definitely be back for more. This is such an entertaining series and I always finish a book having enjoyed the journey and looking forward to the next visit.
I voluntarily read a digital advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher, Kensington, through Netgalley. The opinions are my own.
This was a cute cozy. I flew threw this book and finished within a day. I liked the various relationships in this book, especially Lucy and Katie. They are a good sleuthing team, giving each other information 😊 I loved the relationship of Angela and Raffi, even though they fought, they loved each other no matter what. Coming to the mystery part, there was really a lot going on. Lucy was a good and kind friend to go the length to clear Susan’s name. There were so many red herrings but the final reveal was a shock. The only thing that made me cringe was when Eloise (Lucy's elderly landlady) was hitting on Azad (Lucy's fiance), for comedic effect. If the gender was reversed it would have been unacceptable. Apart from that, it was quite an enjoyable read 😊
My thanks to Netgalley and Kensington for an opportunity to read this book.
Lucy's parents own the Kebab Kitchen, a restaurant in a seaside town. The town of Ocean Crest is sponsoring a Polar Bear Plunge to raise money for the Senior Center. Lucy and her friends join in, but are shocked when a local man dies, and it turns out to be murder. Lucy and Katie decide to investigate when their friend and owner of the local bake shop becomes a person of interest. A fun and relaxing read with a holiday theme, this cozy series is one of my favorites--and recipes are included!
I love taking trips to the Jersey Shore and imagining this cozy touristy town with a boardwalk situated next to the beach. And of course, I imagine the food at Kebab Kitchen and can picture all of the deserts at Cutie's Cupcakes. I think I might have gained a few pounds just reading this book, the recipes at the end sound divine.
Lucy is back on the case after a fellow polar bear plunge swimmer washes up dead. Who killed him? Why? Lucy is determined to discover the truth especially when her friend Susan of Cutie's Cupcakes is arrested for the murder. There is no way Susan could have done it, but the evidence is stacked against her. Lucy tries to stay out of the situation but her instincts take over and she investigates with her best friend Katie.
From reading all of the other books in this series, the killer has been someone you would never expect. Perhaps they had a small role, or it just doesn't seem like they have the motive. Well, in this case, my spidey sense went off and while I may not have known the why, I did figure out who the killer was but not until near the end. I was quite surprised to discover they why and that this character was willing to throw Susan or anyone else under the bus. But that is why this person is a criminal, they have no morals. There are several potential suspects, all with good reason to kill Deacon, but which one will it be?
Along with the mystery, there is also the relationship between Lucy and Azad. They dated when they were in college but events led them to break up. After some time, and her mother's interference, these two have reconnected and are now engaged. Lucy has her concerns and has stalled on setting a date, but I think they cleared that hurdle in this book. I enjoy watching their relationship continue to blossom.
I enjoy this series and recommend it to everyone looking for a cozy with some good greek food. I want that hummus bar here in my town!
This is the 5th installment in the Kebab Kitchen series. Lucy Berberian is back home in Ocean Crest New Jersey managing her family restaurant with her fiancé Azad being the chef. The Jersey Shore is getting ready for the holidays and they are having a polar plunge in the ocean with the proceeds from the event going to help the senior center. Most businesses participate and Lucy is going to take the plunge with her best friend Katie. Katie and Lucy the day before went to look at a possible reception hall for Lucy and possible place for the city’s Christmas party that Katie has to pull together and one of the owners Deacon Spooner is not so nice and provides outrageous pricing to both of them. They leave but the Deacon’s business partner stops him and says he will try and work with him. At the plunge the next day they see people from all local businesses as well as Deacon and his partner along with her baker friend Susan and her boyfriend. They crowd takes the plunge and afterwards Deacon’s dead body is found on the beach. As Susan was seen close to Deacon in the water, she becomes a prime suspect as she supposedly threatened him. As Lucy and Katie soon find out Deacon was not a nice guy and there are several suspects. Of course there is a limited number of people who were actually in the water and with the scene being chaotic any of them could have done it. I love this series and the friendship of Lucy and Katie but also how Azad and Lucy are handling their engagement and he is giving her the space she needs and supports her (within reason) with her investigating to help her friend Susan. The reveal of the killer comes as a surprise although it was always a possibility. Looking forward to the next in the series.
A Kebab Kitchen Mystery Series is one of my favorite series. I love the characters in it. The wonderful food that I can practically smell while reading about it, the family, the friends. *sigh* It all comes together so beautifully. When I read the books in this series it feels like I am there. Tina Kashian never fails to transport me away from my troubles. This series is like comfort food except in book form. Mistletoe, Moussaka and Murder was just what I needed to read. This year has been a rocky one for everyone. I had been having a struggle with concentration. I switched to darker reading to match my feelings. Then I was gifted an ecopy of this book for review consideration. I didn’t even know how much I needed old friends, wedding talk, a Christmas party and a murder. Reading this book, being transported far away, truly lifted my soul. I was so happy to see Lucy examine her feelings and accept them. It was delightful when she spoke to her mom about her plans. I laughed out loud picturing it. I swear, that was my favorite scene in the book! The dead body? Yes, there is one. Wait until you read about that! I won’t talk much about it as you really need to figure it out yourself. There are a number of potential murderers. The reveal was a heart pounder for sure. I am already anticipating the next book. Will there be a wedding soon? If Katie and Lucy’s Mom have anything to say about it the answer is most definitely! Give yourself a gift and get a copy of this book. We can all use some Christmas spirit now.
Edited to add: *I received an ecopy of this book for review consideration. Thank you to Kensington Publishers, NetGalley and the Author for this opportunity. I voluntarily reviewed this book and all opinions are based on my enjoyment of the book.*
Lucy and her friend, Katie are partaking in the Polar Plunge as are most local businesses. What she doesn't expect is for a death to occur during the event. The owner of the reception hall that Lucy and Katie looked at , Deacon Spooner, drowns. At first it looks like an accident, but it is soon discovered that he was murdered. The evidence points to bakery owner and Lucy's friend, Susan. Lucy and Katie don't believe Susan is guilty. They start investigating hoping to prove Susan's innocence.
I have always liked this series. The characters are so full of life and are so charming. I love that it is set in a town on the Jersey shore. The author gives you so much detail about the shore and the community of the people who live there. Lucy's parents and landlady are wonderfully colorful secondary characters. I love the lightness that they bring to the book. The mystery was good. I did figure out who the killer was about 70% through the book, but it didn't take away anything from the quality of the book. This is definitely a series I will continue. Thank you to netgalley and Kensington Publishing for this ARC copy.
Lucy has a lot on her plate besides running her family's restaurant. She's getting ready for Christmas, trying to plan a wedding, and trying to find out who killed a man at the Polar Bear Plunge.
This is the first I'd read in this series and I found I really liked Lucy and Katie. The food at the Kebab Kitchen made my mouth water and there are recipes in the back of the book. The mystery was well-crafted. There were a good number of suspects with interesting motives and I guessed who had done it, but not the motive until Lucy figured it out.
It didn't have the Christmas feel that I tend to like in a Christmas mystery. There were a handful of Christmas related activities, but there were so many other things happening that it was not a real focus. It may also have been that I find even a snowy beach doesn't really put me in a holiday frame of mind.
While I didn't find it a very Christmas-y book, I did very much enjoy the characters and the mystery so it's a series I will definitely continue to follow.
I enjoy reading cozy mysteries, and I like to sample various series & authors to make sure I’m not missing out on a new fave. But there are some current faves that I follow most closely and am always thrilled when a new book comes out. Tina Kashian’s Kebab Kitchen Mysteries is one such series, and I also love that I’ve been with it from book one (even the cover reveal haha!). I enjoy all of the characters, the setting, the plots, the romance, the humor, the writing style, and of course the delicious food served up at the Kebab Kitchen! It makes my mouth water for some good hummus – which I recently discovered I can have delivered to me from a fave local restaurant, courtesy of Uber Eats. #winning
But I digress.
Mistletoe, Moussaka, and Murder is a delightful addition to the series. Lucy is such a great protagonist, and her relationships with the various supporting characters are layered and engaging. I especially enjoy her interactions with her fiance Azad, her best friend Katie, and her landlady Eloise (who is a hoot!). Beyond the mystery that gives the book its framework, the heart of this series is family – the one you’re born into and the one you assemble around you as you go through life. Kashian does a marvelous job of blending both dimensions to this story so that the relationships don’t take away from the cozy mystery feel, and vice versa. It makes for an engrossing read from start to finish.
Another thing that makes this series a fave for me is that the culprit isn’t as obvious as it can sometimes be in the cozy genre. More often than not, when reading a Kebab Kitchen Mystery, I’m stumped as to whodunit. Yet after the reveal it all makes sense & I feel like I should have seen it all along. Mistletoe, Moussaka, and Murder does it again, and I think this time I was more clueless than usual. Very well-plotted & perfectly executed (if such a word is permitted when discussing a murder mystery lol)
Bottom Line: Mistletoe, Moussaka, and Murder is a feast for the senses – yummy food to make your mouth water, sea breezes to appease the beach lovers among us, the sights & sounds & aromas of a bustling boardwalk, family, friends, humor, heart, and a puzzling mystery to unravel. Kashian creates dynamic characters and layered plots, and readers will find her writing voice delightful and appealing. Another great adventure with Lucy & crew!
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
What a fun addition to this already great series. Lucy is such a fun character and her friendship with Katie really adds a little twist to the story. The cover of this book had me smiling so much, I love snowmen and books that take place at the holidays are my favorite. Lucy has her work cut out for her when a murder investigation has her friend at the top of the suspect list. All evidence points to Susan, but Lucy knows deep down she’s innocent. Is Lucy wrong this time or is someone setting her friend up to take the fall?
A Cosy mystery story is a must for Christmas! Maybe it’s because I went into the series in the 5th book but I don’t feel any connection to the MC - Lucy and the rest of the characters.
The mystery was fun as an annoying character died at the annual Polar Bear plunge (jumping into icy water is pretty courageous) while raising funds and there were plenty of suspects as everyone seems to have a beef with him. It was a little slow in the middle as there were talks about relationships and weddings but I love the yummy Armenian/ Greek food scattered throughout the story. I love hummus!
The culprit was quite a surprise and overall it was nice and cozy.
4 stelle e mezza Altra serie terminata anche se il finale è abbastanza aperto in modo da rendere possibile altri libri. In questo libro il colpevole è risultato una sorpresa per me, una volta tanto.
Mistletoe, Moussaka & Murder is the fifth title in the Kebab Kitchen Mystery series. Although I have not read the previous stories in this series (I will be going back for them in the near future) I wasn’t lost in this story and anything that I really needed to know from the previous events could be found in the narrative or the dialogue. I wasn’t lost but I do wish I’d found the time to get caught up first… time, never enough of it.
Lucy and her best friend, Katie are deep in wedding plans (at least, Katie is) and getting ready for the annual Polar Bear Plunge, the proceeds of which will benefit the work needed at the local senior center. It’s all in fun, freezing, and a good cause… until a very nasty, disliked, and rude man apparently drowns during the event. But it’s soon obvious that this was no accident and another of Lucy’s friends is the prime suspect. There is no way that Lucy believes for one minute that her friend did this, so it’s time to dust off the investigative skills and track down a killer.
I had fun with Mistletoe, Moussaka & Murder even though I was catching up on some background that should have been familiar. Still, I got to experience Lucy’s family who originally ran the restaurant and still works there, her adorable soon-to-be husband, and even a flirtatious landlady who has her eye on Lucy’s man… in a totally flirty, not home-wrecking way. And food. I swear I gained 5 pounds just reading this book because, of course, I got the munchies for some moussaka myself. I had a couple of strong suspects, but I rarely read a Cozy Mystery to be the first to point out the killer, I enjoy the lead up to the reveal and the background story perhaps even more than solving the murder. This story kept me on my toes while enjoying an adorable cast of characters (for the most part). I will definitely be going back to the beginning in 2021. If you love a good Cozy Mystery with food, friends, and an enjoyable experience, then you’ll want to check this one out soon.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher, Kensington Books via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
This is my third book from what is proving to be a wonderfully entertaining series. Although I hadn't read books #1 and #2, Hummus and Homicide, and Stabbed in the Baklava, I jumped in at book#3, One Feta in the Grave. This one, Mistletoe, Moussaka, and Murder is book #5 in the 'A Kebab Kitchen Mystery' series. Though I am, in part, familiar with the characters' histories, I think anyone who hasn't read any of the books in this series should have no trouble reading this as a standalone.
Mistletoe, Moussaka, and Murder started out great and just kept getting better and better! Lucy Berberian is thriving as manager of Kebab Kitchen, her family's Mediterranean restaurant on the Jersey Shore. The mystery was really intriguing and it kept me guessing. I enjoyed meeting up with the recurrent characters again and I liked their interaction. Tina Kashian's engaging writing style and detailed descriptions of the charming seaside town of Ocean Crest continued to delight, drawing me into the story straight away so I didn't want to stop turning the pages. With the Kebab Kitchen being a central setting, there were plenty of mentions of mouthwatering and delicious ethnic food dotted throughout. Lucy's family dynamic and the restaurant atmosphere were wonderfully articulated and the locale was fun. She is now engaged to Azad Zakarian, the head chef at Kebab Kitchen. I also really liked that Tina Kashian widened the storyline to include a scrumptious bakery, Cutie's Cupcakes, owned by Lucy's friend, Susan Cutie.
This was a quick, light and joyous read, with plenty of action, worthy suspects and red herrings that ticked all the boxes for me as far as cozies are concerned. Definitely an all-round winner, I highly recommend Mistletoe, Moussaka, and Murder and I hope this series continues so I can carry on following Lucy in her exploits!
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request Tina Kashian, Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours and Kensington Books via NetGalley and this review is my own unbiased opinion.
Mistletoe, Moussaka, and Murder is the fifth book in the Kebab Kitchen Mystery series by Tina Kashian. As a Christmas cozy mystery, this book hits all the right marks for a delightful read, starting with the adorable cover depicting a sandy snowman on the iconic Jersey shoreline. One of the draws in this series is the special familial bond the protagonist, Lucy Berberian, has with her parents, sister, and friends. Despite the bickering her parents exhibit from time to time, there’s still love between them that flows over to how Lucy interacts with those around her. I also have enjoyed watching Lucy grow over the course of the series, especially with her relationship with Azad, the chef at their restaurant and am excited to see what happens in future books as they plan their nuptials. Other core characters are Kate, Lucy’s long-time best friend and her landlady, elderly Eloisa. Kate, married to a detective, brings humor to situations as Lucy’s sidekick and sleuthing partner, while larger-than-life Eloisa brings outright hilarity.
The murder mystery of who killed a local reception hall owner in sight of scores of people during the annual Polar Bear Plunge was cleverly done. Ms. Kashian writes a tightly plotted tale with clues sprinkled throughout to keep a sharp reader on their toes. With the interjection of holiday cheer, descriptions of the quintessential boardwalk and the businesses that thrive on tourism, and adorable Gaddoo (which is cat in Armenian), this book is a cozy, lighthearted read. The reveal caught me unawares as I was caught up in the holiday celebration, which added to my enjoyment in this well-crafted story.
With the family’s Mediterranean restaurant, the Kebab Kitchen, being a central setting, there are plenty of mentions of delicious ethnic foods throughout the book. I really liked that Ms. Kashian expanded the plot to also include a delectable bakery in the mix and includes recipes from both venues at the back of the book.
I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Not my first go-round with this author and series, and while it would function just fine as a standalone, I started remembering Lucy the protagonist and her great support characters. My favorite is always Katie, her BFF, and in this entry to the series pushing Lucy to proceed with her engagement and wedding plans. Lucy has obstinately dug in and refused to budge.
Visiting a possible venue, the owner is seriously rude and she crosses that venue off immediately. However, she’s embroiled in the Polar Bear Plunge and as she and Katie brave their way in and out of the water discover said nasty venue owner on the sand and not moving. She’s not been the only person he was rude to and universally disliked.
One of his universally abused is her friend Susan, owner of the bakery Susie’s Cuties. Having had a run-in or two with the deceased and also in the same frigid water at the same time, the local detective has decided she’s numero uno suspect.
While the quest to clear her friend becomes a driving force, Katie is still busy pushing the wedding bell agenda, although I must hand it to Katie, she is up front with helping Lucy in her pursuit of the real killer.
It is a well-plotted book but a slow, cozy pace, and I had a difficult time getting into the mystery under the wedding plans. She’s dragging her feet wrestling with her qualms of marriage to Azad. Personally, I think that’s a done deal.
There is naturally a lot of foodie talk but I was sorry to see it revealed in the conclusion the one I suspected but hoped it wasn’t. Also chagrined to see the reason behind the mayhem. Really? FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. These are my honest thoughts.
Lucy is one of those characters that you either like or you don't like her at all. When I first started reading this series, she wasn't my favorite. However, in Mistletoe, Moussaka, and Murder it would be difficult for readers not to like and enjoy getting to know Lucy. With this Christmas addition to the culinary based series, readers will cement their friendship with Lucy and the other cast members.
Christmas in Ocean Crest is cold, snowy, and fun. Between cooking delicious meals, participating in local holiday events, and planning her upcoming nuptials, Lucy has her hands full. But when she takes part in the holiday polar bear plunge and finds a body floating in the surf, she adds a murder investigation to her list of things to do. Food brings people together, and Lucy's culinary skills are improving tremendously, so it doesn't take long to hear on the grapevine that a few too many people disliked the victim.
Suspects come out of the corners, and some seem to have great motives for wanting the victim dead, including a disgruntled former bride, a business partner, and several business people. Twists have more than one meaning in this sometimes bazaar Christmas story, but they all move the story towards its ultimate end. The killer could be a surprise to many but not everyone. I enjoyed the way the author mixed in all of the action, wedding planning Lucy wasn't really into, and family issues such as her parent's constant bickering and the cooking. All of this combined to make Mistletoe, Moussaka, and Murder, a fun, easy read, with new recipes to delight culinary fans for the Christmas holidays.
Lucy Berberian, manager of her family's Kebab Kitchen, is preparing to get married. Even though she's busy she still decides to take part in the Jersey Shore's annual Polar Bear Plunge. But the dive turns deadly when she finds a dead swimmer.
The deceased plunger is Deacon Spooner, the reception hall owner who turned up his nose--and his price--at her wedding plans, and Lucy wonders who would want to kill the man. There are lots of suspects, and Lucy has a wedding to plan, and a Christmas fete at the Kebab Kitchen to deal with as well as a murder investigation.
This is the first book I've read in this series, and I have to admit after I'd read the first few pages I wondered if I'd made a mistake picking up a book in an ongoing series. But after that I found myself drawn into the story and wondering why it had taken me so long to try this writer.
I love the setting, I love the characters, and the storyline was intriguing. Lucy is a strong character, and that is always a plus for me. Her relationship with her fiancée, Azad, is great, and her best friend, Katie, adds a lot to the story.
The only thing that kept this from being a five star review for me is I figured out whodunit before the end. But the journey to the last page was fun. But now I have the four previous books in the series to read, and that makes me smile.
If you like culinary cozies and you haven't tried this series you should. It is a fun trip to the Jersey Shore.
I read a digital copy of this book provided by the publisher through NetGalley.
This is the fifth book in the Kebab Kitchen mystery series by Tina Kashian.
After a local man is found dead after the Polar Plunge, Lucy decides to investigate since her good friend is labeled suspect number one.
Lots of secondary plot lines that really made this story so rich. Lucy is being pressured to set the date for her upcoming nuptials. And her mother wants to announce her wedding at a town shindig. She is uncertain about talking about her personal life in public. Lucy waffles between wondering if she is ready for such a big step in her life or turning tail and running away again like she did in the past. Her fiancee and head cook seems pretty chill about the whole thing and is waiting for Lucy to make up her mind. This is a great plot that is sandwiched between all the sleuthing she does.
I had no idea who the bad guy was. Great whodunit. Quite intricate and misleading at times. And the characters... Wow! I wanted to go and live there. Who knew the Jersey Shore would be so appealing. I wish there had been more interactions between the friends, but otherwise, this was a wonderful read!
If you love a good cozy mystery, definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.
I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.
The Kebab Kitchen, in the form of Lucy, is taking part in the Polar Bear Plunge for charity (this year it is the Senior Centre) and she has roped her best friend Katie in to do it as well. Before all that takes place Katie drags Lucy off to look at a potential wedding venue (okay Katie is also trying to find somewhere in a hurry for the Township employee's Christmas party as the previous venue closed without notice!), the Sea View seems fantastic, until they meet one of the owners, who is pompous, money grasping and just down right unpleasant! Even so everyone is shocked when Deacon Spooner ends up dead after the Polar Bear plunge and when it transpires he was killed and a local baker is arrested, Lucy and Katie put their virtual deerstalkers on and start to track down a killer.
A man is killed during a polar plunge, turns out he is the man that turned his nose up at her wedding plans. The person blamed is a wedding cake baker who Lucy is sure didn’t do it. Lucy’s friend Katie is planning Lucy’s wedding without much help from Lucy. They are both planning a big part at the restaurant that Lucy and her fiancé are in charge of. Lucy has a lot on her mind and wants to find out the real killer. One thing that isn’t made really clear is why Lucy who is in love, is stalling on planning the wedding.
