Irish-born Abraham Stoker, known as Bram, of Britain wrote the gothic horror novel Dracula (1897).

The feminist Charlotte Mathilda Blake Thornely Stoker at 15 Marino crescent, then as now called "the crescent," in Fairview, a coastal suburb of Dublin, Ireland, bore this third of seven children. The parents, members of church of Ireland, attended the parish church of Saint John the Baptist, located on Seafield road west in Clontarf with their baptized children.

Stoker, an invalid, started school at the age of seven years in 1854, when he made a complete and astounding recovery. Of this time, Stoker wrote, "I was naturally thoughtful, and the leisure of long illness gave opportunity for many thoughts which were fruitful according to their kind in later years."

After his recovery, he, a normal young man, even excelled as a university athlete at Trinity college, Dublin form 1864 to 1870 and graduated with honors in mathematics. He served as auditor of the college historical society and as president of the university philosophical society with his first paper on "Sensationalism in Fiction and Society."

In 1876, while employed as a civil servant in Dublin, Stoker wrote a non-fiction book (The Duties of Clerks of Petty Sessions in Ireland, published 1879) and theatre reviews for The Dublin Mail, a newspaper partly owned by fellow horror writer J. Sheridan Le Fanu. His interest in theatre led to a lifelong friendship with the English actor Henry Irving. He also wrote stories, and in 1872 "The Crystal Cup" was published by the London Society, followed by "The Chain of Destiny" in four parts in The Shamrock.

In 1878 Stoker married Florence Balcombe, a celebrated beauty whose former suitor was Oscar Wilde. The couple moved to London, where Stoker became business manager (at first as acting-manager) of Irving's Lyceum Theatre, a post he held for 27 years. The collaboration with Irving was very important for Stoker and through him he became involved in London's high society, where he met, among other notables, James McNeil Whistler, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In the course of Irving's tours, Stoker got the chance to travel around the world.

The Stokers had one son, Irving Noel, who was born on December 31, 1879.

People cremated the body of Bram Stoker and placed his ashes placed in a display urn at Golders green crematorium. After death of Irving Noel Stoker in 1961, people added his ashes to that urn. Despite the original plan to keep ashes of his parents together, after death, people scattered ashes of Florence Stoker at the gardens of rest.

This one was a little too slow-moving for me. It didn't have much momentum for me. More of a suspense story, it reminded me a little of "The Most Dangerous Game". Stoker apparently wrote this story as a result of his honeymoon in France, and it's evident that the scenery had a creative effect on him. Although it was a hard read, I did appreciate the sinister aspects. The way the narrator soon comes to realize that he's being set up to be murdered by the vagrants he visits was well-done. The hints that they have malevolent intents dawned on both me and the narrator at about the same time. There was also the suspense of the chase as the narrator runs for life, and the menace of the hungry rats. Sadly, this one didn't win me over. It was a bit too much of a hard read and not much of a satisfactory payoff. Even so, I'm so glad I got the chance to read it. As a whole, I do admire Stoker's writing.

Veoma napeta i efektna.

The karma is thick in this short story.

An Englishman travelling Europe whilst waiting for his year of probation to end, so he can go back to England to claim his love, Alice.

He spends a great deal of time in Paris, and since he processes a curious nature, he spends his time discovering the hidden and isolated parts of Paris.

Sadly for him he picks the wrong neighbourhood and ends up running for this life.

Stoker really have this fascinating with rats. It was a little slow in the beginning, but picked up a bit in the end.

Will I recommend: If you, like myself, am on a journey of reading a bit more classics in your life, then yes. It was not my favourite of Stokers work by any means, but I do find myself compelled to finish it.

I think I prefer “The Sqaw”, at least that one had more action than this… Thing…
I expected this to be some kind of terrifying story about rats and stuff like that, but got an extremley boring story. There were some parts I enjoyed, I really like Bram Stoker’s writing, but I wouldn’t really recommend this to anyone, especially not people who want to get into Bram Stoker. He has far better works, and among the short stories, “The Secret Of The Growing Gold” is muuuch better, I like that short story more and more as the days go by.
What a dissapointment…

I just finished The Burial of the Rats by Bram Stoker, and wow, what a thrilling ride! This short story is an eerie journey through the underbelly of Paris, led by a young Englishman who finds himself ensnared in a deadly game of cat and mouse with a gang of vicious rag-pickers.

Stoker's vivid descriptions paint a grim picture of the city's darker side, making you feel the grime and danger lurking around every corner. The protagonist's struggle for survival against the relentless pursuit of the rat-like antagonists is gripping and terrifying. You can almost hear the scurrying of the rats and feel the protagonist's fear seeping through the pages.

This tale stands out because of its relentless pace and the palpable sense of dread that builds with each paragraph. Stoker masterfully weaves suspense with horror, keeping you on the edge of your seat until the end. It's a stark reminder of the thin line between civilization and savagery.

Perfect for fans of gothic horror and those who love a good, old-fashioned scare, The Burial of the Rats is a must-read.

Entertainig fantasy listening 🎧

I istented to this as part of a nine short story of Bram Stoker stories. Each of the stories was different with interesting well developed characters lots of action and misdirection leading to each conclusion. The nine short stories was a surprise but enjoyable listening which I would highly recommend to readers of fantasy, horror, and mystery stories. 2023 😎👻☠❤✨

Weird Tales reprint of a short story first published in 1914 [in] Dracula's Guest and Other Weird Stories.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dracula...

There's a 1995 movie adaption available on YouTube, but, it's so crap I'm not even going to link it. The only reason I mention it is, well, ... In 19th Century France, a young Bram Stoker is captured by a man-hating, all-female cult of thong bikini wearers. Aided by flesh-eating rats, the warrior women raid the lairs of evil men. ... as well as ... "I was also supposed to be working with 50 trained rats, but there were only 16 and I think eight of them were dead. The rest had only been trained to eat anything that smelled like fish. So every time I'd do a scene where the rats had had to swarm all over me, they took fish eggs and squeezed the juice all over my body."

Unfortunately this did read not as a horror story, but more as a travel guide to Paris. Primarily, which area of the city to avoid due to it not being very tourist friendly. Also deducted some pointe due to the lack of rodent representation

I think this was meant to be a social commentary on some of the ills of society. That, or possibly it was a slight on the French revolution/society. Either which way, it was not to my liking.

It's very evident that this short story was written years and years before Dracula. The premise is promising: a sinister group of very old, creepy, and practically corpse-like soldiers are out to get the handsome, young hero. However, Stoker did not do much to develop upon the plot line. Why are these people out to get the protagonist? Why did their leader, a morbid old woman, tell him stories about herself before "unleashing" her henchmen upon him? Why did she keep looking at a ring he wore? After a chase seen that extends for pages of pages, the abrupt ending of this story leaves such questions unanswered. It is definitely good for Stoker that he was able to extend upon his plot lines by the time he got to writing masterpieces such as Dracula and Jewel of the Seven Stars. Good thing he "dug himself out" in the early years of his career.

Although this is not one of Stoker's best tales and it is a bit slower to get started than some of his other work, it is worth persevering with as once the tension and anticipation start building they don't let up until the final page. The slow dawning realisation of our narrator's situation builds both within him and within the reader and the sense of dread is palatable until he endeavours to make his escape across the rat infested heaps, swamps and wasteland. A vivid and dramatic story that leads you slowly at first but builds in pace as the chase begins. Paris certainly has a darker side...

Victorian horror stories are the funniest things. They're very good stories, no doubt about it, and thoroughly creepy too. They'll ensnare you and leave you hanging on every word, but they're honestly kind of funny too.
They're just so.. random at times. I mean the way this story ends? It seems a bit rushed and just... odd. But I like it. What can I say, I'm a fan.

This story in particular scored high on the creepy-scale. Ugh. Rats, cannibalism, warm human bones, running for your life. It's definitely not boring. It's very short, probably originally part of a bigger collection, I don't know, but I enjoyed it.

A quick, uncanny read. Lovely for a Sunday morning.

Having read a couple other of Stoker's book I started this book expecting to find myself reading about something misterious and paranormal. The beginning of the book is kinda slow and does not gives many clues about where's the story heading to, but as I continued reading, and to my surprise, found out, that my expectations about this had been completely wrong, I could only feel thrilled about it. And from that point and so on, it's a very exciting reading experience.
