" The story of this land is that of our families of our common past of our present and our future.
We krow of no other land. This are is all that we have."

Nanda

This is the first page of “ Ti zistwar nou pays” - Tales of simpler times by Mr. Nanda Pavaday.
In my opinion the book is not a story, a life of every Mauritian and also each and every one who had a life in a non metro cities of India.

The author who is from a humble background, son of uneducated but cultured and kind parents shares his experiences of his life till his fathers death.

The starts his first chapter with a new beginning of everyone’s life - New Year’s Eve . On completion the first chapter I immediately fell in love with the book because I understood that this book is my childhood, my college days.
Exactly the same way we used to go for shopping, stitching new clothes (no ready made dresses), I used to wash the brass vessels with tamarind pulp etc.
I am connected with every chapter,
Harvesting time: ( sugarcane but for me paddy fields) exactly the same manner the labourers walk early in the morning to their field.
Street food : ( gato Pima - for us vada pav) it’s still on the go food for office goers who are in a hurry and also poor daily wagers. Certainly we can’t get the same taste when we try at home. 😊

Grinding stone: the girls were trained by their mothers in all household chores before they get married which includes the usage of grinding stone And wash rock. That system is completely vanished. Not only the masalas are tasty it was a great exercise for women.
Household chores: every line brought back my childhood/ teenage memories. As kids we used to share work. I used to do utensils and broom, my sister washing clothes and my brother pressing clothes. Post dinner, each one will take a turn to wash the kitchen completely for next day’s new start.

I can keep on writing for every chapter, the school system, the barber shop , football , Hindi movie telecast on every Thursday and so on.
Every chapter ends with authors note which explains the meaning or history of local words .
The book end with the tragedy of his life, loosing his father on the day of his departure for his higher studies.
His quote:
“l experienced the moments that followed like a passenger on a train: I watched the
scene unfold in front of me without being able to do anything.”
We are helpless in many situations.

If you are an Indian, you will immediately get connected with his book. If you are a non Indian, you will fall in love with the rich culture, traditions, family attachments and genuine affection and simplicity of Mauritians.

Highly recommended.

Tales of simpler times by Nanda Pavaday
Genre - Memoir, Short story collection
Rating - 5/5

Memories, be they happy or sorrowful we all want to cherish whenever we feel alone or we received any success in our life, or if we meet with someone we want to share memories, it's kind of rarest treasure that we all want to keep and share at the same time, but not to hide. Memories are meant to be shared and cherished, it's a little invisible time-traveling portal that we all possess in our gray cells and use from time to time.

I can call this book, not just a book it's a museum of memories. Stories from a Mauritian author. Every story in this book is filled with the epiphany of lost time, every word bringing fun and sorrow, and every short story is written with love. Every page envelopes lots of emotions that are waiting to be unfurled by us.

With his quirky, crispy, yet so simple words the author takes us to the soil of Mauritius. Accompanied by beautiful illustrations, every page unraveling the fresh fragrance of green grass, essence of memories, and salty Mauritian winds touched me. Author Nanda shared here his childhood and growing-up days memories. I felt every drop of the author's ink pouring nostalgia into my heart.

Not only just stories, but this book is also a conveyor of Mauritian culture and life. With every story, the author gave us some words of Mauritius and explained their meanings which added more fun and exciting ambiance to the book.

Every character, in every single story, is real, and this added to the book more value to this short story.

With love, fun, and affliction when the book reached its ending, I couldn't grasp it properly. I didn't want it to end so soon. The author Nanda, with his book re-established the great joy of affliction.

🌟I loved this book. It took me back to those beautiful days. The author Nanda Pavaday in his memoir mentioned 24 tizistwars from his childhood to adulthood. Some of the incidents were so relatable that they brought that nostalgic feeling.

🌟I enjoyed reading this book, reading about his time growing up, I remembered my childhood, the memories attached to it, the past and those awesome days.

🌟The author describes the events that took place in Mauritius but I being an Indian kid of 90's felt so connected to many of them. This shows how similar our cultures are.

🌟The cover is so beautifully designed that one falls for it at first look itself. I found it eye-catchy. The illustrations used at the beginning of each chapter are so good and relevant to the title of that chapter.

🌟The writing style is so magnificent that literally, I could imagine the scenario while reading the story. This book is simple yet so soothing.

🌟It was totally worth the time. I loved reading it. This is a beautiful book recommended to all

What a beautiful beginning!!
This book made my 2023,
Tizistwar nou pays is an English translation of the french book of Nanda pavaday.

This book is crammed with beautiful pictures & graphics which portray the author's childhood in Mauritius & the time he lived there among those people, that Rush, street foods, doing household chores, and memories with siblings, friends, and elders.

I found this book very much related to my own life.

I'm a lit bit nostalgic while writing this review going back in time which was very sweet.

I don't know fortunately or Unfortunately but time is the only constant.
We can't go back to those happy days but definitely it will always stay in our heart as the sweetest memory of the good time!!

I highly recommend this book to all book lovers, give it a try!!
