Hayley (h) is running away from a cheating boyfriend when she's held up at a gas station by snowy weather and a pair of slashed tires. Rogue (H) acts as a good Samaritan and gives her a lift, but they find that the small town hotel is already full. With no choice but to let her stay at his cabin, he finds himself and his bear both increasingly distracted by her scent and starts wondering if she might be something he's only dreamed of - his fated mate.
I liked it - a very solid short story. Insta-love, as fated mates stories often are, but not super OTT, which fated mate stories also often are (well, can be). The first hookup in the restroom was a bit much, personally, but it might the setting that put me off rather than the pacing. Otherwise, it's fairly well-paced for an insta-love, actually giving you a little personality to the leads before they hop into bed and start professing undying love. Some good steamy scenes, some suspense and action too. Solid short read.
Biggest downside? Super short story - only about 60 pages. Makes for a good lunchtime read or quick afternoon escape, but typically tends to leave things underdeveloped and (if you like the characters) leave you really wanting more. That's the case here. Yes, it's a really good short story, but it's hard to really get that 5 star level (for me at least) when it feels like things are rushed or left underdeveloped due to page count. Still, for what it is, it's a really good read.
Overall, the editing was well done and it was very readable. Usually free romance shorts on Kindle are a lot more... problematic... when it comes to editing and proofreading, so this was refreshing.
Alternating 1st person POV. No cheating, no OW/OM drama, no love triangles. Kinda a 'snowy cabin' story as a pair of fated mates comes together. Solid short read with a bit of suspense and shifter action when Hayley learns about the shifter world, some good steamy scenes, and a sweet HEA with epilogue. No cliffhangers.
Would I read more? Yes. This looks like a fun start to a series of short SPN romances. Next up is Ash, the alpha, and the h is a recent LIS grad! Always a sucker for a bookish h, so definitely will be giving at least the next one a try.
