My grandparents had a beach house tucked in a cove on the shore, and I spent every summer until college there. Some of my best childhood memories were from my time at Heathrow Beach. Mostly because I was head over heels in love with my neighbor Lee Thompson. He was adventurous. He was brave. He was twelve. But my eleven-year-old heart knew he’d be the one I’d end up marrying. Lee was my first kiss, my first love, my first everything. But the summer before my senior year in high school, Lee never showed up. In fact, I didn’t hear from him again. Almost twenty years later, I found myself back at Heathrow Beach looking for answers. And finding more than I bargained for.
** Annabelle and Lee is a contemporary romance inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's poem Annabel Lee **
I love Poe's writing, so I was so excited to read a book by Danielle Allen that was inspired by Annabel Lee. What I didn't know, though, was that a good chunk of the beginning was going to be when the characters fell in love as teenagers and they didn't reconnect as adults until over 40% into the book.
For the first 40% of this book, I was just reading along and waiting for them to meet as adults. When they finally did meet as adults, the romance was just...fine. There was nothing in this story that had me dying for the romance or really invested in the characters. There was this strange mystery that was added in to make conflict at the end and it wasn't really woven together seamlessly into the story. Instead, it felt random and not very fleshed out. There were also dramatic revelations at the end about the past that didn't really feel genuine either but instead just added for shock value.
I did feel the desperation between the characters to be together, but as a reader I didn't have that same desperation. Belle and Lee were cute together, but that angst from the poem just wasn't there for me.
I have a gut feeling that Danielle Allen plans her writing schedule and sometime along the way says, "Let me go ahead and write something, release it in January, and leave the readers with something they will remember for the entire year!" I truly believe this because Broken Clocks which was released in January 2018 is still on my mind. Annabelle and Lee is one of Poe's most beloved poems and Allen's spin on it is quite the journey.
I tried to look away, but I couldn't. And he saw it. He saw my heart. He saw my soul. He saw my truth. I was completely exposed.
I mean, COME ON! If that isn't love then I don't want it.
Sometimes folks take a classic, put their spin on it and it becomes a hot mess. I can't say that about Annabelle and Lee. It is such a fresh and modern take on something that was written in 1849.
There was so much to unpack in this one. Are we truly able to experience life altering love as kids? What kind of self sabotage do we cause when we refuse to face childhood trauma? Are we going through the motions/settling in the love department because we want to play it safe?
Allen has proven that she can write with the best of them in the romantic comedy genre with titles such as Sweatpants Season and Disasters in Dating. Allen has proven that she can hold her own in the mystery/suspense genre with her The Women of V series. But, romance is her sweet spot. It is what she does best. If you haven't read anything by Danielle Allen, then I highly suggest that you do!
A childhood summer crush compounded daily with an unattainable future drives Annabelle and Lee apart. Years later, will this love still hold up? Inspired by the poem by Edgar Allan Poe, this was a beautifully written story of forbidden love.
I followed the Author's instructions and read the Edgar Allen Poe poem first which set up the story perfectly. The story was well thought out and the writing was superb! I laughed, cried, I was angry, had to stop reading (but couldn't really stop) I went through every emotion and I enjoyed every minute of it. It's a must-read!
This book gave us all the feels with the 90s nostalgia. The way Annabelle and Bradley’s love story was built around their childhood brought back those feel good moments from earlier upbringings. Truly, their story was one that stood the test of time and was built for the ages. We loved how the story showcased that one traumatizing incident can change your life’s trajectory. It also showcased that when it comes to matters of the heart no one on the outside truly knows what’s best. And we love that Amara was that friend who pushed her bestie to greatness otherwise Belle and Lee’s story might not have seen its destined ending. Go best friend! We would’ve love to see some type of closure to Angel and Belle’s strained and strange relationship, also a rekindling of Gemma and Belle, and lastly Kenny making peace with the divorce. Nevertheless, we are completely enamored with Lee and Belle...and Kiyan. We can not forget Kiyan! 4.5 stars!

Upon meeting each other in their preteens, Belle and Lee knew that the other was special. Watching their love grow, as they did, was magical! They were old souls, that knew exactly what they wanted, and planned it to a "t". Lee, although successful in his professional life, was miserable due to his missing piece. I was so angry with Lee, until the truth came to light. Belle, also excelled in her career, but was cold in relationships, due to her missing Lee. Going back to Heathrow, was not only therapeutic for the both of them, but also necessary for healing. A love that strong, could never die. Was glad we got partial closure to the mystery. However, I would have loved to know who A was. Enjoyed this very much! 👍👍👍
Loved all the mystery this book gave when getting down to who the missing people were. It was crazy that the parents had more secrets than the kids thought they were hiding all along. So glad belle and Lee got their life back on track and moving in a positive direction for the future. Loved everything about this book and I've always loved Edgar Allen Poe poem's i also have a book of poems by him from my mother very good stuff to get into.
Just like the other two books and Allen has written based on Poe poems this one was not short of brilliance. The characters are so thoughtfully put together from beginning to the end. The set up, to the future, and everything in between. This book has so many themes from the poem so if you haven’t read it please read it. The images she paints through words is like watching this book on a projector in my mind. The underlying mystery while we’re loving the love story is nothing short of amazing. The way I got caught up in the story I didn’t want it to end. I found myself trying to find ways to distract myself so it wouldn’t be over. The tribute to Poe here was so good. Read the poem as many times as you can and analyze it before reading this story. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.
Just wow 😳... Danielle this was definitely a work of Art! I’m just in awe and I didn’t want this book to end! I loved Lee, then I Hated Lee, and then finally I really loved Lee! Oh how I can relate! Thank you for an amazing journey!
The book started slow, but picked up. Belle was getting on my nerves so bad. Lee was everything!!! I kind of figured out the twist in the story, but loved how it developed. I wished the epilogue had more. A lot of questions that it left.
*Complimentary copy received from author for review purposes.
First off, I have to say, this is probably one of my most favorite times of the year. Every January I am blessed with the task of reading a Poe inspired novel. A tradition three years strong and I hope like hell it keeps going.
When I hear that Danielle is writing a Poe inspired novel, I always wonder how she will twist Poe's words into something that will have a different, yet still deep meaning. Even though I know she's done it before, I'm always thinking can she do it again?
Well, people. THE ANSWER IS YES! Yes, she definitely can.
You guys, this book... this book is just so, I don't even know what it is. It just is.
This book had me all over the place. I was smiling, I was crying. I was mad, ooh, I was soooo mad. I was ready to cut a bitch. I was ready to jump in this damn book and start calling folks out and do some damage. I had theories, ya'll... the theories I came up with. Theories on top of theories on top of theories and still I was coming up with some of the most ridiculous things trying to piece it all together.
I know the rules with Danielle. I follow the rules with Danielle.
If she says "read Annabel Lee first". You read it first. Because you know she is going to weave it all up in there and all those easter eggs will be so much fun to find.
Umm... I could not even think about those fun little gems because I was so distracted with this story and caught up in my own feelings about it.
By the end I was done. D.O.N.E. Done with Poe. Done with Annabelle and Lee. Done with Heathrow Beach. Done with using "summer" as a verb. Done with Danielle Allen and all her brain scrambling. Done for all of 15 minutes.
As usual, great read. I loved them as kids, and how they found each other again. While their meeting was short, it was really good to see the adult conversation with Belle and Denise. I still had questions at the end, i can make assumptions about how things were at the end. It ended kind of bluntly, i need clousure! Still great read.
Danielle Allen is truly gifted ! I' had such an amazing ride reading this book. I just loved Annabelle and Lee's chemistry. I fought for their love harder than they did LOL! I hated this story had to end. I loved the life lessons.
I love when Danielle Allen does Poe inspired books because they are always good. Their story made me love love. I can admit that I was definitely on the I hate Lee train for a while but he's forgiven. This was a cute love story and a great play on Poe.
3.5 rounded up bc that twist on her Ava Michelle was well done.
This started off as a really cute story. When the got older I thought there were times that belle was over reacting. But I get it, she was really hurt by Lee. I think it was real messed up what their parents did. Angel was a big time bitch and hater even after 25 years. Amara was a good friend. And I liked the added mystery that started when belle and lee were preteens and was finally solved when they found love again
The similarity in the Poe poem and this story is the young couple fell in love and never had a fair chance. In this story, the author paid a perfect tribute to Mr. Poe with this young couple and the strife and struggle they had to endure to inevitably make it back to one another. I especially enjoyed the way the author showed how black families also have vacation spots. Then there was the history behind the close enclave and the eventual tragedy which effected both families. The plot twist with Ava Martin was just plain amazing. The perfect part was Annabelle and Lee connecting again. Superb writing and storytelling.
The feeling you get whenever you read a Danielle Allen novel. Your soul is satisfied, your senses heightened by the brilliant words. This is another great story that have you on the edge of your seat. Annabelle and Bradley's young love was as real as it gets but it was hindered, covered up and plotted against by those who thought they knew best. But true love never dies. That lil plot twist concerning the mystery they worked their whole lives to solve, had my jaw dropping! Another great story
Annabelle Lee is one of my favorite poems by Edgar Allen Poe. Growing up, I dreamed of a love that defied all logic & reason, that was just as passionate as it was sweet & romantic. This book was an amazing adaptation of that poem and I have no words for how happy it made the dreamy little girl inside of me feel. The love between Annabelle and Lee didn’t make sense to anyone but the two of them & that’s ok. It didn’t have to. I loved it. Definitely recommend.
Danielle knocks it out of the park with this unique spin on another Poe poem.
These two fell in love at a young age and were torn apart. Twenty years later their paths cross in the place where they first met and they find themselves having to work their way through all of the hurt and pain of the past.
This story is a roller coaster of emotions and some of the secrets that are revealed are jaw dropping.
Annabelle and Lee’s chemistry is palpable and undeniable!
- The timeline of the relationship: I specifically loved the part exploring their childhood and first love. This would play beautifully as a movie.
- The mystery of Ava Michelle: That was a nice touch, bringing them together and then reuniting them years later, however I did not like the resolution or the related twist (see below).
- The date: Lee promised this date as a kid and fulfilled it as an adult and it was so precious.
- Caring for one another: especially Lee… The small gestures of taking care of Annabelle, being there for her even when she is mad at him, bringing her dinner, taking her to her appointment, etc... I love reading these little moments.
What I Disliked:
- This is meant to be an epic love story and we witness the intense pull the two main characters still feel towards one another; however, although I was very invested with them as kids and looking forward for their second chance romance, I just didn’t feel the same attachment to their story once they became adult and I wasn’t emotionally moved by them ending up together.
- The twist with the mystery: I wished the story of Ava Michelle remained just a little mystery that brought them together as children and once again when they reconnected. However, bringing the father into it felt unnecessary especially since we really don’t see anything playing out in the book. We just get small snippets of conversation between Annabelle and her grandma and then just an update that her parents are working on resolving everything. So in some way, this didn’t have much of an impact on the story, it feels it was just some sort of distraction to take away from the confrontation between Annabelle and her parents regarding their previous meddling with her relationship with Lee.

It’s been a while since I’ve written a post. As a matter of fact, I haven’t read anything this whole month to even write about. So, this past week I decided I needed to take a vacation from reality and decided to pick up a book from one of my favorite authors Danielle Allen. The release of Annabelle and Lee was right on time. This month has been stressful and busy, so reading was placed on the back burner because when I did have the time to read, I was just too tired. But picking up Danielle Allen’s latest release was the best thing ever.
I read Annabelle and Lee in one day even when I tried to slow my pace down; I couldn’t put my kindle down, I fell deeply in love with this book. Then I thought to myself how I could possibly review this book. It is just so good that I can’t do it justice with my thoughts. In a book by Jane Austen called Emma, the hero tells the heroine, “If I love you less, I might be able to talk about it more.” And this quote sums up how I feel about this book.
The story itself felt so heartbreaking while still being so romantic and hopeful. Danielle Allen had me tearing up, feeling giddy, laughing, raging, and experiencing every possible emotion while reading this book. Do I really need to keep raving? Have I said enough to convince you to read it? It’s a book that I could reread, and I’m sure it would be just as fantastic the second time around. I highly recommend Annabelle and Lee by Danielle Allen!
DA has done another masterful job - even if she wasn’t adapting this to an EAP poem, this was beautifully done and it really resonated with me as someone who had a childhood first love, very concerned parents, a f$&* up break-up and then a “closure conversation” a decade plus later. I can attest to how “puppy love” can actually leave scars that you carry well into adulthood so I found Belle and Lee’s baggage realistic. The teenager in me completely got Belle’s outrage but the adult also understood where the parents were coming from. All in all this tale triggered some things for me but the story was really well done with one beef. I felt like the wrap-up on the Ava Michelle storyline was a little rushed at the end and it could’ve used a little bit more at the end.
This book blew me away!! It's sweet, romantic, funny, sexy, endearing and full of love. Annabelle and Lee have an amazing, but at times, heartbreaking journey. Young lovers that fell off course for twenty years and now they have to determine if they're ready and able to admit that the love is still there. I loved this book from beginning to end. It's written amazingly and it held my attention from the start. Also, let me say...I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the character Amara. It was so refreshing to see a friend who was supportive without being pushy or a pushover. Her advice was on point and she wasn’t afraid to tell Belle the truth about herself. I found my self “Yasssss-ing” through much of her advice. Great character!!!!
I'm in awe! The interpretation of Annabel Lee was so precise that it took me two weeks to write this review. Ms. Allen never disappoints, a romance story that holds high standards to Poe's work is one of the most brilliant ideas I've ever experienced. YES! Danielle Allen's reads are experiences that all emotions are pulled from your body at once. Annabelle and Lee will take you through it, and make your heart beat and break. A love like theirs lasts forever, right? R-... Nah, y'all are not gonna get me to spoil this epic romance for ya.
All I can say is, I'm sure I'm in love with Bradley. (Mmmmhmmmm) I'm sure I'm stalking Danielle Allen for her next experience.
The power of love is eternal. No matter the outside forces and tha pain that attempt to tear it down. Love is an energy that cannot be destroyed. We can deny it to our own detriment sometimes it to our strength. Annabelle and Lee's lives took different paths thanks to interference but they found their way back to the same road. Would they have accomplished more together or struggled? Others in their lives suffered for not being the right person for them so who knows. This is an amazing book about the journey of self discovery, letting go of the pain and bitterness of the past and opening your heart to what really matters. A must read.
I really, really loved this story! Annabelle & Lee meet in the summer when their families vacation at the beach. They are around 12 and they almost instantly fall in love. Their parents think it's cute for a few summers until they realize that they might just really be serious. Finally, they are kept apart and it breaks Annabelle's heart. But we only know her story. Later we learn that Lee's heart has been broken as well. It's much more to the story than expected and I could hardly put it down. I was upset right along with the leading characters at different times. Definitely check this story out, you won't be disappointed.
I am writing this at 3am instead of doing what everyone says to do, sleep while the baby is sleeping. That is how good this book is. Annabelle and Lee is not only beautiful written, sucking you in before you know it, but it is also the ultimate love story. The saying, let them go and if it’s meant to be they will come back, was written about this story. I fell in love with young Annabelle and Lee and grieve with Annabelle at the sight of her first heartbreak. I don’t want to give to many spoilers so I will just say, this is a must read!
