Dawn #2
The Dawn Princess
A derelict castle. A sleeping Princess. A deadly vendetta. The fate of the world. Great destinies shouldn't be like this.
Mercenary Captain and magician, Phillipe, of the Marauding Sea Wolves Company doesn’t know whether to praise his luck or curse when he and his retreating people stumble across a derelict castle surrounded by thorns. With magic involved, there is no such thing as coincidence.
Running from an evil magician only known as the Emperor, Phillipe and his people need a place to hide. What he doesn’t need is a Princess, pampered, spoiled, and useless. If he wants the castle to hide and protect his people, he’s going to have to wake the Princess inside.
Once awake, Princess Roxana isn’t what he expected, stubborn, proud, and hard working. Knowing nothing of the current world, Roxana is seeking answers to what has happened while she’s been asleep. The people she knows have disappeared. New creatures called centaurs and minotaurs walk the lands. The answer appears to be this Emperor.
Taking on evil magicians is her life's calling. She can't fall in love with a man who is avoiding her. Come spring, even if no one wants her to, she’s going to take on this Emperor herself. That's a life she understands. Suicide mission. Maybe?
The fate of the world and its magic is on the line. If she and Phillipe can let go of their pride and love, for once it is a good thing that Roxana was born a Princess.

About the author
Ginny O.
8 books5 followersI’m an Adult Sci Fi/Fantasy writer without any fancy degrees, just an abiding passion and a lot of experience pounding away at the keyboard. I love reading and I love writing. Reading is an addiction and writing is a disease. (If you don’t believe me, ask Robert Heinlein. Go on. I’ll wait.) My third grade teacher read us The Hobbit and Mossflower with voices and started my addiction to the written word. He is awesome. Redwall, Star Wars, Dragon Riders of Pern and about anything Mercedes Lackey were my comfort reads of choice in high school.
I love back rubs, cuddles and action movies. Yes, Action Movies. What is not to love? Man eye candy, gratuitous explosions and no need to think too much. I think too much already, sometimes I just want to turn my brain off, thank you very much. I review action movies on my blog, ginny0.wordpress.com.

The Dawn Princess by Ginny O. is a story which will appeal to readers who enjoy tales of magic, romance and adventure.
The story weaves through the developing relationship of a princess from another time with a tough war-hardened captain who is forced to make some hard choices in order to be with her.
The author attentively builds a world of magic and magical creatures around the central plot in which the princess and her captain must conquer a sweeping and dark evil that is draining their world of magic for his own selfish needs. The author describes the devastation and the struggles of those that come to be allies of the pair. As the groundswell of support for their campaign against the emperor grows, it becomes apparent the old tyrant’s reckoning is upon him.
What I liked:
The world-building is just lovely. It is clear the author has done a lot of work and research on the fairy and magical realms she incorporates into her story. Her dragons are exquisitely imagined and it is possible to see how they will develop in later stories in the same series. I enjoyed some of the light-hearted banter and the complexities of relationship between the main characters.
What I didn’t like:
I found some of the scene transitions vague and it took a few moments on occasion to realize the story had moved to another scene. The cues are not always obvious. I also found that same light-hearted banter enjoyed in previous scenes where the characters are enjoying meals together a little jarring in the final battle scene where I expected an intensity of emotion and purpose that was in contrast to the glib back-and-forth between main characters. As a reader who enjoys stories with plenty of action, I was a little disappointed that the main action sequence (big battle) occurs in the last 10% of the story and almost feels secondary to the time the group spend preparing for their ultimate battle. I prefer a story with more balance in this department.
Overall, I found the Dawn Princess to be an entertaining read even though I’m not a big fan of fantasy books. I loved the dragons, loved the large cast of characters and the setting was imaginable and well-described. There are more books in this series and I’m sure they expand further on the stories of the captain, the dragons and many of the additional characters who appear in this one book. I look forward to more great story telling from this author.
