The Adventures of Ace Carroway #5

Ace Carroway and the Midnight Scream

Rate this book
Crack detective, inventor, and woman of mystery Ace Carroway's next case turns personal when one of her associates goes missing.

It's summer solstice at Stonehenge, 1922. Archaeologist Sam Biming keeps a midnight vigil to make sure none of the tourists trip into his dig site. A horrible scream rips through the air: the sound of sudden, excruciating death. The crimson splashes on the heel stone tell of grisly bloodletting. But no slashed body lies among the rays of bloodspatter, only a mysterious, solid gold ankh.

The ankh comes from ancient Egypt, but crafted recently. Sam chases the paradox, to his undoing. By the time Ace arrives, Sam has vanished.

Clues point to a secretive order of jester-assassins. But these assassins served the pharaohs of ancient Egypt and should have disappeared three thousand years ago.

Should have.

To rescue Sam, Ace must unravel the most bizarre set of clues she's ever encountered, across three thousand miles of travel and three thousand years of time. It's a puzzle to stymie even Ace's formidable intellect.

Solve it she must, but if she does, one thing is clear. Assassins lie in wait at the end.

This book contains: Stonehenge. The British Museum. The mighty Nile. Hippopotamus. A knife of solid gold. The secret guardians of darkness. A diamond necklace tossed contemptuously into the dust. Sweet Egyptian coffee. The ability to walk silently. Sunburn. A deposed pharaoh rotting in prison. Tweed.

Ace Carroway and the Midnight Scream is fifth in the Adventures of Ace Carroway series. Content rating: teen.

Wyoming native Guy Worthey traded spurs and lassos for telescopes and computers when he decided to pursue astrophysics. Whenever he temporarily escapes the gravitational pull of stars and galaxies, he writes fiction, now in the slightly less rectangular state of Washington.

He plays jazz bass and happily stretches genre boundaries to find common musical ground with his classical violinist wife Diane.

A beacon of inclusivity in a fractured world, he likes both cats and dogs. Creamed eggs on toast is the earthy name of his favorite food, but once in a while he samples the celestial delights of chocolate.

A Well-told Tale You Won’t Want to Miss…

This is the first book I’ve read by Guy Worthey. Although Book 5 in a series, ACE CARROWAY AND THE MIDNIGHT SCREAM stood tall as an intriguing and entertaining stand-alone. Follow Detective Ace (Cecelia) Carroway from England as Ace and her two companions, Tombstone and Gooper, arrive in Egypt via Ace’s very own airship. After meeting her former commander (Ace has a background that involves aviation in WWII), the pilot/doctor/detective sets out to find Sam and uncover the mystery behind screams in the night and blood trails. Action, adventure, Egyptian mythology and so much more in a well-told tale you won’t want to miss! ~ Bette A. Stevens, author of award-winning children’s book AMAZING MATILDA and other books for children and adults.

Ace Carroway - An Unusual Story

Ace Carroway is on a mission to find out who is doing the killings. Blood curdling screams and splashes of blood alone with a golden ankh are all the clues left behind. Ace must travel through thousands of miles of time to get to the bottom of it. Airships were a mode of transportation that got my attention.

I normally don't read these kinds of fictions so I wasn't getting a whole lot out of it at the beginning. The story was slow-paced and dragged on. Halfway through, it started to get interesting and a little more fast paced. Getting through the dialect of some of the characters was a test of the author's skills as a writer. Getting through the characters were a hurdle for me. I didn't feel like I knew Ace or her sidekicks very well.

In the end, the mystery gets solved and lives are saved. But what surprised me was the historical angle to this fictitious story. Apparently airships were in existence in Europe between 1928 through 1937. I'm an American and I never got that in my history lessons. And then an American, Charles Lindberg, made his first 1927 flight. That's the history I am aware of and the author gets points for weaving this information at the end of the story. Another point was the author's interest in making a woman the heroine. That didn't go unnoticed.

I was just as surprised by the author's personal story. He was an astrophysicists in his day job and wrote fiction on the side. That was an interesting side to him.

To be honest, I gave him three stars because I ended up just barely liking his style of writing. It just didn’t appeal to me. And it may be way over a teen’s head.

This book took me on a journey that I won't soon forget.
An archeologist, Sam Biming, uncovers more than he bargained for at his dig. A shrill scream at the site leaves a radiating pattern, resembling blood splatter, but without a body or actual blood. In London, gems are stolen and replaced by gold artifacts. Sam finds an artifact in an alley and a godlike creature before Sam disappears.
Ace Carroway and associates are called to help locate the archeologist. They arrive from America in a strange aircraft. This is when I began to realize most things in this book are strange. Witches and druids live near the dig site. Ancient gods and assassins appear and disappear during the story.
Ace and friends travel to the ancient city of Thebes. They cruise the Nile, face assassins, and are taken to a secret valley. I believe I've said enough to show the creative imagination of the author.
The plot is a wild ride into the supernatural.

Ace Carroway and the Midnight Scream, by Guy Worthey, is a fun mystery set in 1922 England and Egypt. Ace Carroway, a “Jill” of all trades, joins archaeologists and travels down the Nile in hopes of finding her missing friend who may or may not have been kidnapped. This book is part of a series, but it works fine as a stand alone novel.

I enjoyed the characters and plan to read the four earlier books just so I can get to know them better. This series is made for lovers of historical mystery featuring a cast of quirky characters.

I greatly enjoyed this book and thank the author and publisher for the Kindle copy I received from Goodreads Giveaways.

If ya like Indiana Jones...

I received this book as a Good Reads giveaway. Hence, I have not read books 1 through 4. However I don't think I was at a horrible disadvantage. This did have the same feel as the Indiana Jones movies, if you replace Indy with Ace Carroway, a woman, and moved the action a bit closer to the Great War instead of just before WW II.

The first chapter was really interesting – then from then on the book just dwindled down to nothing I really didn’t care for the writing, the style and/or the characters. I found it boring and was truly disappointed as it started off so good.
