A desperate family. Ruthless criminals. Bloodthirsty cannibals. And a glimmer of hope in a Land Darkened.Despite all odds Wyatt and his family survived nuclear winter. But with food supplies exhausted and vicious attacks on their home they’re left with no choice. It’s time to leave Maine and seek out a life with a future.
Sticking together was supposed to keep them safe, but cannibal country earned its name for a reason and the reality of life on the road is worse than they ever imagined.
Join Wyatt, Seth,Trooper, and Barbara on their journey through a dying and dangerous world. This heart-stopping post-apocalyptic thriller is the first book in best-selling author Tony Urban and Drew Strickland’s series Cannibal Country.
A professional photographer, writer and fan of general weirdness (both real and imagined), Tony has traveled tens of thousands of miles seeking out everything from haunted locations, UFO crash sites and monsters like Bigfoot and the Mothman. In a previous life, he worked in the independent movie industry but he finds his current career much more exciting.
Tony's first writing memory involves penning a short story about taking a road trip with his best friend and his dog (two different creatures) to watch KoKo B Ware in a professional wrestling event in Pittsburgh. He wrote that epic saga while in the 3rd grade and it was all downhill from there. His first books were a series of o)eat travelogues but recently his zombie apocalypse series, "Life of the Dead" has been a bestseller online and grossed out readers all over the world. His ultimate goal in life is to be killed by a monster thought by most to be imaginary. Sasquatch, werewolves, chupacabras, he’s not picky. If that fails, he’d enjoy making a living as a full time writer. Which of those two scenarios is more likely is up to the readers to decide.
I love the apoc genre. The bug out bags, the viruses emps,, I really like to see how people react & survive. This one is different. No virus , no zombies, it's people dealing with the aftermath of nuclear devastation. No trees no grass very few animals. People are starving. And there's always someone else who want little they have. So, a mother & her two sons along with their neighbor & protector are traveling from Maine to the southern equator for the food & Sun they've heard about. Is there anyway possible? So many problems, so many cannibals! Enjoyed this book...must find the next installment...😊
What can I say, two of my favourite authors of this genre plus Matthew Crow's brilliant narration. He just adds something to this genre and I just got addicted.
The boy's journey over the three books showed amazing growth. It was good to have all the books in one audio book as you could just carry on and go with the flow.
This was an outstanding contribution to the genre. I was just addicted to find out what happened next. Not for the faint hearted.
Apocalypse more like Sexolypse. The story did not keep my attention. I couldn’t wait to finish it so I could read a different book. I do not plan to read the rest of the series.
The Land Darkened is a fantastic start to the Cannibal Country Series, a well-written and entirely engaging, post-apocalyptic thriller. The premise follows a family traversing the nuclear-devastated land, searching for a safe sanctuary. At the start, a terrible event sets a dark tone to the story, and it continues through the end. The storyline is action-packed, gory, intense, exciting, and even heart-wrenching. The threat of cannibals was by far the most chilling part. You are aware of their presence. You do your best to brace for the anticipated encounter. Even so, no matter how well you braced, it's not enough.
The characters were well-developed, diverse, definitely authentic with distinct roles and personalities. My personal favorites were Supper, the three-legged mutt, Trooper, the family's protector, and Wyatt. Wyatt is ordinary and not the traditional hero; in the beginning, he was uncertain and lacked survival instincts. However, he learns from mistakes, growing brave, overcoming fears, and stepped up to the plate. The ending was great, especially the twist, and I can't wait for the second book.
Matthew Crow's performance was spot-on, modifying his voice to fit the various characters' personalities, ages, and gender, making them distinguishable. Both authors and narrator did a brilliant job, and I highly recommend this audiobook.
A fast paced post apocalyptic thriller.I was into it from start to finish. After a brutal attack in which their mother Barbara barely escapes with her life the brothers Wyatt and Seth along with their neighbor trooper (a former policeman) decide to set out in search of a safer place to call home .Journeying through a dark barren wasteland (the product of a nuclear war) the group encounters all sorts of friends and foes.As they venture further into cannibal country the boys are forced to grow up very fast and make incredibly tough decisions. What follows is love and loss and everything in between that makes up the human condition.
I really like Tony Urban. His books are usually tense and action packed. This one was all of that. But missing on some character development. As the book opens, the apocalypse has been going on for about 5 years. After a late night attack, Wyatt's mom Barbara decides to leave their home. She was attacked and injured. It's the push she needs. There's nothing there for them anymore (their dad hasn't been seen or heard from since taking a business trip the day it all started). They set out (with their ex police officer friend and neighbor Trooper into the world heading to Mexico. They meet all sorts of people including cannibals, of course. A solid 3.5 read.
Hey , So you're tired of the Zombie apocalypse, well screw that! This book has cannibals! How awesome is that? And think about it , if there's A breakdown of Civilization which is more likely to happen? Zombies or Cannibals? Anyway this book has great characters with a believable story line. I highly recommend you read this book. Five stars for sure and I would give it ten if it was possible....
The Land Darkened takes place five years after massive apocalyptic event. It centers around one small group which is primarily family. The characters are realistic and determined. I enjoyed the storyline and love that it ended without a major cliffhanger. I would like to read book 2 but, I won’t due to the use of vulgar language.
It was a good book. It was different that it had the cannibals at the end of the book. I loved the characters as they were a different lot and how they traveled across states. I would say to read this book and see how it stands up to you and I'm looking forward to seeing what the second book will be holding in store for us.
Love the characters, especially Wyatt, though Trooper was a close second. I’d like to think I would have the decent and kind heart of Wyatt, the knowledge of Trooper, and the spirit of Seth if I found myself alive in the apocalypse. Can’t wait for the next installment , Urban never disappoints!
I was on the edge of my seat for the whole book, and finished it in one sitting. The characters were believable, and the plot flowed from one shocking turn of events to the next, Matthews narration was wonderful, and I can't wait for the next book. I received this book in exchange for my honest review.
This is probably one of the best dystopian series I've started in long while. I found that I became really invested in the characters. While glossing over minute details , they focused on the meat of the story leaving the reader to imagine all the in between action. This is my first read from these authors and I certainly intend to finish this series!
Took a bit to get into but after living his zombie series I kept on reading and so glad I did. His characters are always well formed and not one dimensional so you know you’re in for a roller coaster. Can’t believe his books aren’t on TV but sure that will change. Off to read his next book!
I didn’t expect much, but I loved this book. It was a little slow in the beginning but after chapter ten it really started off. I’m still sad that one character died, but they went out like a boss....kinda. Defiantly recommend.
What's worse than zombies? Cannibals! Where zombies don't need an explanation, what drives humans to eat other humans? That's not discussed in thus book but you get to see the other side - being hunted!
Quite a descriptive read! If this would ever happen, I think Bean me up Scotty is in order Unfortunately , human beings are capable of many things & having no food can make one an animal. Great story!
After a nuclear event destroys the world, Wyatt and his family survive in Maine. With resources running low, they set out to find somewhere better, if it exists. There journey proves difficult and hostile, especially when entering cannibal territory.
“The Land Darkened" is a book that's as dark and dreary as the post-apocalyptic world it's set in. On the one hand, Tony Urban does a great job of creating a vivid world, filled with danger, suspense, and survival. On the other hand, it's not exactly a feel-good read... it's super dark.
The characters aren’t well-developed and I didn't find myself attached to any of them. Though I’m glad Seth managed to crack a few jokes... I mean, if you're going to live in a world where everything is totally f'd up, you might as well try to have a little fun, right?
