The battle for Rislandia begins.
After a the voyage in the second book to find the secret antidote to the Wyrath Empire’s terrifying soldiery, Zaira von Monocle and the crew of the Lilliana return to find the maddened empire at war with their homeland and an invasion commencing. What follows is a running battle from the border to the capital itself, with the heroes using every trick their steampunk airship can pull off to put their desperate plan into play and blunt the Wyreth attack, but the enemy may have more-than-human aid at their disposal.
While seeing our favorite characters is a treat, I’m still left wondering what exactly Emperor Ivan has got in mind and how he’s been making his advancements. Only the next book will tell.

A rousing conclusion, but hopefully not the end.
The author is excellent at walking the line between the terrors of war and actual angst. As a result, you feel the heroine's doubts and fears without feeling helpless. She always has a plan that keeps you turning the pages. I found the romantic subplot a bit awkward, which is strange considering how stunningly well the author does young romance in his comic books; however, the bulk of the book is high-flying steampunk action and adventure, not romance, and that is very well executed here. Highly recommended!

The Horrors of War
I think what I liked best about this book was that there was no attempt to glorify war in any way. I saddens me to think on how much we all could accomplish if we worked together instead of constantly fighting. I guess I'll never understand. Fortunately, in THIS story, the good guys won. At least for now.

Good swashbuckling fun. The daughter of a famous airship captain continues riding to the rescue to save her home from the dastardly invaders hopped up on berserker juice. I enjoyed it, but I would love to see a blueprint of the airship. If we can have maps, we should be able to at least get a picture of this fantastic flying machine.
