Good Start

Very promising start to a new prison series. The last chapter left me a bit confused. It was done in a POV but you don’t know who one of the characters is.

All in all however the book was great. The characters are good. I’m excited to see how the different relationships form and play out.

Carnage.. Nice concept, but needs work

"I cried for the woman who’d only wanted to be loved and build a family. I cried for the woman who lived carefree, never worrying about whether her bills were paid, or if I’d be able to afford my next meal. That woman was gone from me now, replaced with a shell of the woman standing in the mirror, shedding tears." - Lani

Lani: a fire and metal mage abused and tortured, until she ended the life of her abuser. Now she's in prison for ten years... But can it be any worse than the prison of her former abuser? Lani soon finds herself being confronted by the other inmates. Desperate to stay safe, Lani builds even more walls around herself... Yet somehow, Jess breaks through those walls, and finds her way into Lani's heart. Bring a water and ice witch, Jess is vulnerable in a way that Lani isn't. And Jess has the backing of the Collective, four of the most deadly and dangerous of beings....

"It wasn’t just about sex with him (Alex). No. It was about that connection. That electricity that sparked between us, that primal need for him to know I wanted everything he had to offer." - Lani

Braxton, Lenny, Alex and Jason: a powerful vampire, a warlock, a shifter, and a werewolf; nearly immortal beings that controlled the prison as the prison controlled them. Four handsome, sexy beings that have Lani in their sights... Was it just for her magical abilities, or was it for something more? But when Jess comes under attack in a totally unexpected manner, it'll take the Collective and Lani to stop the attacks... And to win their freedom...

Interesting storyline, but needs some additional edits. Misspelled or missing/incorrect words (for example peaked for peeked, conscious for conscience, etc.), incorrect tenses, incorrect punctuation all disrupt the flow of the story. Another issue I struggled with while reading this story is the choppy storyline with missing or confusing segues from one scene to another. A valiant effort, but it misses its mark.

This was a very good start to the series. Lani is in prison for killing her abusing husband. She has to keep secret part of her powers or she might end up in solitary confinement. Lani makes friends with one of the other mages who is friends with the prisoners who help police the prison. They want her help to escape but she’s not sure if she should help them or if she even wants to. I enjoyed Lani as a character and the other guys. We only really got to see two of them in this book but I am very curious about all four and what’s is going on. There is a lot of flipping between her past and the present which a few times threw me off cause I wasn’t expecting it but it added a nice touch to the story and explained certain things that are important for the plot. There is some steam in this one and Lani has to figure out who she can trust and what she’s willing to do for those she cares about.

This story starts out as expected with Lani going to prison and meeting her fellow inmates while making friends and enemies. I have to say quite a few scenes made me laugh out loud. I thought the story was fun to read and I read it in one sitting just to see how it would end. Plus there was a mystery to this story that kept me guessing and questioning. But to know more you must read the book. I thought it was a great start to a series that has good and bad guys and evil creatures and some really interesting characters that I expect great things from in the future books. I cannot wait to see what happens next especially with how it ends.

Carnage is Book 1 in the Supernatural Inmates series by Imani L Hawkins. This is a well crafted story with superbly developed characters. This first book in the series sets up the storyline expertly with Lani going to supernatural prison for her husband's murder. As Lani is a mage and has power over fire and metal, she is sought after by some of the good and evil inmates (everyone wants to break out). There is humor (laugh out loud), mystery to keep you engage and turning pages, and action. I loved this totally enjoyable and entertaining story, looking forward with anticipation for the next in series, and highly recommend it. Received an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest review.
