Twenty-five years of the best mystery short fiction from Crippen & Landru. In 1994, publisher Douglas Greene opened the doors of Crippen & Landru Publishers with the release of a John Dickson Carr radio play, Speak of the Devil. In the subsequent two-and-one-half decades, Crippen & Landru has produced more than 100 single-author mystery short story collections by some of the most recognized current practitioners as well as some of the most beloved writers in the history of the mystery genre. Crippen & Landru has new books by the best of the best in short mystery fiction coming up later this year. Next up will be new collections by Edward D. Hoch and many more. We hope that all of our readers will follow into the next-quarter century of mystery, suspense and detection.
This is a very good collection of crime stories, punctuated by several marvelous pieces, and dragged down by some serious duds— as one can expect from any anthology. Out of the fourteen tales my favourites were~ 1. Brendan Dubois's poignant 'A Battle Field Reunion'; 2. Joe Breen's comical 'A Run Through the Calendar'; 3. Edward D. Hoch's dependable 'The Flying Fiend'; 4. Peter Lovesey's sublime 'Reader, I Buried Them'; 5. Jeremiah Healy's predictable but immensely readable 'A Matter of Honor'; 6. Michael Z. Lewin's darkly witty 'Death Row'. I would request lovers of short mystery/crime fiction to get hold of the single-author collections penned by these authors, although most of them are difficult to find now. Since most of the rest were also good to OK tales, overall grading would be done overlooking those duds, making it a very good collction. Recommended.
