Hamja Ahsan is a writer, curator, artist, activist based in London. He co-founded DIY Cultures Festival - the UK largest festival of zines and activism - that has run annually 2013. This is a sublime work of cultural criticism. As soon as I saw the hashtag #Aspergistan, I wanted to know where to apply for a passport. At the same time, I didn’t necessarily feel like leaving the house, or talking to anyone in order to make that happen. So I found the quiet corner near my bookshelf, with the comfortable, if second-hand chair, and began to read.

I quickly realized that #Aspergistan is not just a dream, it is real, and I had, in fact, already established an embassy.

Oggetto letterario non classificabile, Introfada è un manifesto fantapolitico semiserio in cui l'autore immagina che, in un mondo da sempre dominato dagli estroversi, e plasmato per avvantaggiarli a discapito degli introversi, si costituisca una federazione di stati, la Repubblica di Aspergistan, che possa fungere da rifugio per tutti i soggetti timidi, emotivi, sensibili, appartenenti allo spettro autistico, e che possa supportare una vera e propria lotta al sistema estroverso, denominata appunto introfada.
La Repubblica di Aspergistan ha una propria costituzione, supporta ed è a sua volta appoggiata da gruppi di militanti timidi sparsi per il mondo, organizza eventi culturali e rassegne di cinema introvversivo per promuovere la sua missione e per sensibilizzare la popolazione mondiale al tema della radicata introversofobia della società estroversa. E soprattutto, adotta una politica rivoluzionaria, che non vuole tollerare ulteriormente alcun tipo di oppressione, di sopruso o di discriminazione operato dal sistema estroverso-capitalista, intendendo porre fine l'egemonia di quest'ultimo.
Con un linguaggio ricco, denso ed evocativo, grazie ai geniali neologismi (la cui forza è stata mantenuta nella traduzione italiana) e ai numerosi riferimenti storico-culturali, Introfada è un'opera che spiazza il lettore, che facendolo sorridere contemporaneamente lo provoca, arrivando anche a farlo arrabbiare, a farlo gridare allo scandalo. Questo è dovuto non solo all'utilizzo di un registro linguistico diretto, crudo, che rievoca immagini proprie del pensiero estremista ed intollerante, ma anche allo stile letterario, che oscilla tra la satira sociale e il pamphlet politico, tra la parodia e l'analisi critica dei costumi, tra sogno utopico e realismo pragmatico.
Ho apprezzato moltissimo l'idea che sta alla base di quest'opera, la sua costruzione, nonché il fatto che essa possa offrire al lettore un punto di vista alternativo sulla società odierna, diametralmente opposto a quello mainstream. Tuttavia, durante la lettura ho ravvisato qua e là alcune difficoltà nel capire quanto ironico fosse in quel momento l'autore: in altre parole, nelle righe di questo libro non sono sempre riuscito a capire quanto il mondo degli introversi sia stato, al pari di quello degli estroversi, compreso e condiviso dall'autore, quanto sia invece scimmiotato.
Queste perplessità non intaccano in alcun modo i numerosi meriti dell'autore, che ha saputo creare un testo di valore, impegnato ma scorrevole, che restituisce un'esperienza di lettura molto godibile. Certo, la provocazione è talvolta gratuita ed esagerata, arrivando ad accostarsi a potenziali derive estremiste ed intolleranti, a mio avviso pericolosamente fuorvianti perché presentate molto seriamente, quasi come verità. Inoltre, la contrapposizione tra introversi ed estroversi è netta, senza alcuna sfumatura, quasi stereotipata. Sembra quasi che l'autore pensi che il mondo sia descrivibile soltanto in termini di questa contrapposizione, pensiero che non posso condividere. Nonostante questi limiti, Introfada è sicuramente un'opera particolare ed interessante, curata molto bene, che vale assolutamente la pena di leggere.

I have a great deal to write about Shy Radicals by Hamja Ahsan, but for now I want to just give some brief thoughts. I have seen Hamja post for a long while on the idea of Aspergistan, always leaving me with a great deal of intrigue. It is great to see his philosophy out in book form.

I started the book, with somewhat of a bemused look on my face, and then restarted changing the emphasis on my interaction with it. To take what Hamja is saying seriously, I needed to be serious about engaging with his writing. Surely that is the whole point of his book, a form of proselytising to those who have not given these issues enough thought.

Bringing about change, without being loudly obsequious to what is considered to the norm, is something I want to think about in my own life and activism. As someone who struggled with bullying in school, and as someone who used to well up in tears in class if ever having to speak out loud or answer a question, I only found a voice in my 20s, when I began my activism and found myself trying to give a voice to others. Still...I find that if I have to speak about anything outside of my work with 'normal' people, I'm lost for words and things to say (work is the only social interaction I have outside of my immediate family). Reading 'Shy Radicals' has allowed me to start a conversation with myself about perpetuating privileges that have come with the position I have been given or find myself in. The questions Hamja asks at the end about the roles that we play, are ones that we should all reflect on, even if to just know who we are.

I would have liked to have seen from Hamja's book, something more detailed about social media, and the way that it perpetuates or subverts reality. He says, "The death of social media is the birth of asocial media..." and yet I don't necessarily recognise that. Interacting with Hamja both virtually on social media and (to a lesser extent) in the 'real' world, I see there is a difference in the two dynamics. It would have been interesting to read more about how this dynamic in particular changes, but perhaps that will be in the follow up book.

This book is as remarkable as it is necessary, as it is something I have never thought about in the way Hamja presents it. He tackles all of the big issues in the contemporary world, and yet presents an alternative way to deal with him. I thank him for sharing this with us. Do read this book - but more importantly - reflect on it.

Read for my Unpopular Culture class.

I enjoyed the language and the premise. The story behind the elaboration of this book is astounding, and Ahsan creates a manifesto worthy of the name. I was amazed at the relationships between Shy Radical’s philosophy and that of romanticism: an elevation of nature, introspection, contemplation, etc. The duality between the “shyness” and the “radicalism” of this fictional nation contains so many themes, questions, and possibilities that allowed me to reflect not only on modern culture, but my role in it.

At times, I felt distanced from Ahsan’s narrative. I’m still trying to figure out why. But it is still a very interesting read that helps the reader to better understand the relationship between capitalism, consumer culture, and the demands of modernity, with our necessities and personalities, to the extent of this culture’s effect on mental illness, creative pursuits, and more.

Porta una prospettiva inedita, politicizzando l'introversione e la timidezza, ne diventa manifesto. Come a dire "Hey, questo mondo è tagliato su misura di estroversi, ma ci siamo anche noi, i non estroversi". Provocatorio, senza dubbio, nell'ipotesi di un mondo basato sul silenzio e in cui è abolita ogni forma di rumore, esibizionismo, eccetera. Tuttavia alcuni passaggi li ho trovati ambigui. Perché prendersela banalmente con "le ragazze popolari" - ci ho trovato dei punti pericolosamente in comune con la filosofia di vita degli incel - oppure con attiviste come Angela Davis? Non mi è del tutto chiaro: le rivoluzioni si fanno insieme e non stabilendo confini e recinti tra introversi ed estroversi. Specialmente in una logica intersezionale.

Tre stelline perché resta comunque un libello dal contenuto interessante.

As a kebab-loving,ex-librarian,Japanese-obsessed, tea-drinking, cloud-painter, urban garden lover and zine-maker, I loved this book. There was utter solemnity mixed in with belly laughs of recognition. Highlights were the hikikomori delegation, propositions for voiding bodies like ofsted, the line 'ask yourself, would ISIS ever make a zine with scissors, staples and felt-tips?' Who wouldn't want to live in a state where "24hr access was granted to all public libraries, museums, laboratories, bookshops, tea and coffee houses, archives and cathedrals?" Sign me up.

Sono un'introversa in feroce disappunto, non sono neanche riuscita a terminarlo.
L'idea di base è splendida e non mancano frammenti calzanti ma lo svolgimento è pesante, ridondante e troppo superficiale. Manca tutto ciò che dà vero spessore all'introversione e il contenuto è totalmente riassunto già nel primo capitolo.
Davvero fastidiosa inoltre l'inclusione dell'autismo all'interno dell'introversione, due mondi diversi addossati forzatamente nel paradosso del "non additate i timidi come se fossero malati"...

Mollato a metà. Non capivo più dove stesse andando a parare e quello che mi sembrava interessante come testo militante per rivendicare la sensibilità delle persone timide (o autistiche, che non sono la stessa cosa ma il libro le unisce) mi è sembrato andarsi trasformando in un'estremizzazione molto caricaturale, e mi sono infastidita.

A...political art intervention and act of cultural criticism, I guess? The author – a writer, artist, curator, and activist in the UK – has produced a manifesto and collection of documents from an imagined Shy Radical movement. This movement brings together people who are shy, introverted, socially anxious, on the autism spectrum, or otherwise oppressed by "extrovert supremacy" under a unifying Shy Radical political identity committed to nothing less than the revolutionary overthrow of the current system and the founding of a geographically distributed shy people's republic called Aspergistan. It is clearly tongue-in-cheek, but in a way that emerges from real experiences, real issues, and real things out in the world, and it is not always clear where exactly its genuine seriousness fades into the seriously ridiculous. It's over-the-top, but it also names in a new way experiences that the introverted and the anxious among us will recognize and that, in that naming, may feel oddly affirmed by. Certainly it offers a critique of the real world, even if that is done via the vehicle of a an unreal movement. Clearly written by someone intimately familiar with both radical politics – it really does read like a collection of artifacts from a '70s radical movement – and with that range of experiences that lead one to mostly prefer one's own company, and probably will only be fully appreciated by readers who are both as well. If that's you, read this. Very cleverly done, overall.

Too relatable. Where do I sign up for the non-stop town libraries? (Frankly, sounds more like Finland than Iran - sorry, Iran!) I am sold alone for an idea like that, not to mention all the fine critique that manages the impeccable feat of surpassing binaries such as religious versus secular or feminism versus ”meninism”, without going back to regressive Marxism. Extrovert supremacy is a pretty real thing and I am saying this from a country where loud music radios in public spaces and clubs with far-reaching bass are considered acceptable...

(This is just a half-assed review, should rewrite it at some point.)

Un libro scritto (il titolo inglese massacrato dalla traduzione marchettara Italiana era: Shy Radicals) con verve fortemente satirica e che favoleggia l’esistenza di un movimento di ribellione al dominio mondiale degli estroversi, si immagina persino la costituzione, o la lotta per la costituzione, di uno stato dei timidi e dello spettro autistico denominato: Aspergistan. Ho riso per quasi tutta la lettura ma non sono mancati di certo gli spunti per una riflessione positiva (io per positivo intendo sempre “decostruttivo”, si impara sempre rompendo i giocattoli), viene ripetuto in modo ossessivo il concetto di mondo “ estroversonormato”, e in effetti è palesemente vero: il mondo è strutturato sulle regole relazionali degli estroversi, i timidi, gli introversi possono essere contemplati solo con il consolidato schema dell’integrazione e dell’accoglienza che significa “cura” nei casi più estremi o “imitazione” nelle situazioni più soft. L’autore critica, accusandolo giustamente di tradimento, il libro “Quiet-il potere agli introversi” di Susan Cain che avevo letto qualche anno fa. Per chi come me potrebbe scrivere un canone di sacre scritture su: malintesi, fraintendimenti, accuse di spocchia o di freddezza, inviti a maggiore “comunicazione” (sinistra parola)e milioni di altre sfumature letteralmente impossibili da far capire agli estroversi anche più vicini, tali per cui c’è sempre una mancanza o un miglioramento da compiere nell’adeguarsi al mainstream estroverso ed essere alla stregua della gente “normale” , quella capace di dire “le cose come stanno in modo diretto”, questo pamphlet rappresenta davvero un divertente e intelligente “libro rosso”. Unica controindicazione “sociale”: è un libretto nero con una scritta in arabo, preparatevi a sguardi turbati in metropolitana, mi è successo.

I’m not wholly certain that this quite succeeds because some perfectly valid points are framed in the sort of linguistic trickery and playfulness of ‘real’ social justice campaigns and veer that bit too close to mockery. Shyria law, for example, is such a bad pun, likewise Introfada. I was reminded of a feminist critique of Twin Peaks that asserted as evidence of phallocentrism how female silence is encoded in such names as Mike, as in Mikerophone. The author was deadly serious.

On balance I’m persuaded that this is a worthwhile piece of art that uses pastiche for serious reasons but the ironic tone, the body language drawings, fake interviews and over reliance on student humour make it uncomfortably similar to one of those celebrity comedy books that appears shortly before Christmas one year and shortly after Easter in the Shelter shop the next. File next to Stuff White People Like?

No sé muy bien que pensar. No es para nada lo que esperaba. Pensaba que iba a encontrarme ante un ensayo/reflexión sobre el malestar de los introvertidos y como funcionan las dinámicas sociales extrovertidas.
Sin embargo, es un libro de política, el estado imaginario de aspergistan y su constitución, sus presos políticos... muy interesante como metáfora de la lucha racial y anticolonial, pero no he entendido muy bien la reflexión introvertida.
Interesante desde luego, pero un poco decepcionada a la vez por mis expectativas.

Shy Radicals had me questioning the order of society as well as giving answers to grievances I have around little to no quiet and safe public spaces. The flow and content is varied and keeps your engaged. I would definitely recommend for anyone looking for quiet answers to the injustices in our loud world.

El problema con estos planteos antisistema es que colaboran con el sistema. El neoliberalismo es una teología del mal que crea enemigos para fortalecerse. Porque los crea según sus reglas para que sean vencibles. El problema está entonces en la configuración del antagonismo. Si se configura con las reglas del sistema, entonces el antagonismo es funcional al sistema. Su oposición al mal fortalece al mal. El movimiento de los tímidos radicales tiene ese problema, colabora con la supremacía extrovertida que critica. La apelación a la compasión en una era de crueldad resulta ineficiente y torpe. Quizás el problema sea el diagnóstico, la comprensión de la genealogía del mal. No se trata de sabotear una poderosa máquina en operación, ni de intentar fabricar una máquina opuesta. Se trata quizás de entender primero la configuración de la máquina, su historia, su fuerza política ciega. Quizás desde ese lugar o momento tremendo de percatación la propuesta sería diferente. No se parecería en nada a Aspergistán como objeto político-literario. Si el Gedankenexperiment se concretara como se ensayó en esas granjas tipo Walden de México, colapsaría en alguna forma de autoritarismo tipo Animal Farm. Este libro que intenta defender a los débiles del sistema termina atacándolos sin darse cuenta. Los transforma en insumo del sistema. Radicaliza su debilidad en un giro de falsa fortaleza que fortalecer al poder. Es una dialéctica de la hegemonía. Entonces el problema quizás esté en que todavía no se entiende la naturaleza de esa supremacía extrovertida. Como no se entiende todavía al neoliberalismo. La new left en la que se inscribe Ahsan ha fallado. Demasiado confirmacionista. Le falta diagnóstico, le falta imaginación, le falta escepticismo. Falta entender el problema para que el camino a una solución se vuelva factible. En lugar de tener apsergistaníes fantaseando con disponer de horarios silenciosos en un trendy club como dice Ahsan, habría que entender primero el dispositivo de esa fantasía. El fondo oscuro desde donde emerge ese deseo. Ese deseo ya nace malvado. Hace falta más pensamiento estético-político para que las nuevas utopías tengan consistencia.

Ho sorriso di gusto fino a quando non è arrivata l'apologia del maschio bianco sensibile che spero con tutto il cuore fosse sarcastica. Comunque, è la mia prima lettura che mette in risalto (anzi, assolutizza in modo esasperato) l'introversione - e sue declinazioni - come fronte di oppressione, l'ennesimo in una pletora di altri fronti che, io spero volutamente a fini ludici, di turbamento e dunque incisività della lettura, sono stati ignorati in quello che emerge come modo di leggere la società globale in cui siamo immersə. Il testo è così grottesco che appunto risulta divertente e giocoso nel separatismo (e purismo) che auspica venga prodotto dalla rivolta delle persone introverse, ed è fondamentale che chi legge abbia ben presente che di questo si tratta: un libercolo provocatorio che può far riflettere e che riporta uno squarcio di realtà che effettivamente fa soffrire (e cose ben peggiori, se si pensa alla salute mentale e alla patologizzazione e medicalizzazione di individui non conformi alle esigenze immediate del capitalismo pro socialità e consumi estroversi)... E mi annovero tra le oppresse che devono rifugiarsi in bagno ogni tre per due in casa propria e bere obbligatoriamente come forma di soggiogazione del proprio essere (anche nel-mondo sì) agli eventi sociali mandatori - per dire le due robe meno invalidanti.
In ultimo avrei voluto che fosse dato più spazio all'argomentazione per cui "le persone solitarie sono sempre i migliori rappresentanti della solidarietà" che si trova in fondo in fondo, e me lo rivendicherei per rifarmi con un po' di persone che mi hanno accusata delle peggio cose a proposito, in modo del tutto ingiust(ificat)o :')

Cuestiona parcialmente y de modo superficial el régimen extrovertido, luego procede a hacer una calca de este con "actitudes introvertidas." Ejemplo, reemplaza la cultura del pub con una del café 24/7. No cuestiona la explotación que está sugieriendo para la clase trabajadora. Su propuesta es caricaturesca. Se atreve a asignarle al introvertido categorías de luchas con trazado histórico, lo ve como víctima anulando ahí sus propias potencias. El introvertido es la siempre víctima, el desfavorecido socialmente, a la palabra nerd le asigna la misma carga que la n-word. Risible y preocupante. Asocia la introversión con la falta de agencia ¿estás en la fiesta y te quieres ir? Irish exit, pero el autor no considera estas posibilidades. Pienso que el ejercicio imaginativo del futuro es necesario, pero este libro no explora nada nuevo. Su visión es literal, maniqueista, los extrovertidos son malos per se y sólo pueden redimirse absteniéndose de desplegar su naturaleza y actuando como introvertido. Constituye así un régimen ideal donde se condena la libertad si se expresa de formas no admitidas por lo que Hamja entiende por introversión. Ideal de miedo so pretexto de la exclusión que experimentaron los introvertidos en el régimen extrovertido. Las referencias musicales y cinematográficas fue lo único que valoré del libro.

A very odd book. It's hard sometimes to know exactly when it's being comedic and when it's being dead serious. For sure there are things in it that are designed to get a laugh: "Shyria Law"; "Aspergistan". But this kind of humor is mixed with very sober, militant-sounding pronouncements, as well as poignant, touching language describing the real challenges of being an introvert, a shy person, oppressed by the loud, brash, "exrovert-supremacist" norms of the mainstream society we live in.

In a way the book can be seen as just a lark. A satire. But on the other hand, it's a satisfying catharsis, for someone who has themselves lived with these challenges. It's a reassurance that many others have these problems, and it makes you think, what other world is possible?

A book for the people too often told when young that "you'll be less shy as you get older."

This was a fun(ny) satirical read. Maybe some of the jokes I would have held back on, as some real life comparisons made too much light of things, but all in all a good read that makes introverts feel justified but also (dare I say) pokes fun of people who will victimise themselves over anything.

Problem is, now I want a serious book that examines how introvert qualities can actually be a good things for political activists and leaders. This is probably wishful thinking to vindicate my past self as a shy cospokes, and to stick a middle finger up at people who tried to undermine what I called "gentle leadership". Taking recs in other words.

Ahsan nos presenta una sociedad exclusivamente diseñada para introvertidos, una sociedad idílica. Sin lujos, sin ruidos, sin conversaciones superficiales, sin famosos, etc. Esta sociedad se encuentra en un país aparte y como tal, posee una Constitución, que es con la que se inicia "Tímidos Radicales".

El autor, a lo largo del libro, nos relata cómo es la existencia en un mundo que no está diseñado para la introversión, y como sería un mundo en el que hubiera espacios reales para nosotros (específicamente, un país aparte) y en el que también hubiera conciencia suficiente como para combatir la tiranía del "Extrovertido Supremacista".

Una propuesta muy original.

As an extrovert, I bought this book to expand my understanding of how it feels to be an introvert. Hamja writes with humor and irony while being 100% earnest about the extrovert supremacy. I loved this book and will never think of the extrovert/introvert relationship the same again. Highly recommend!!
