J. (Jill) Bengtsson is the bestselling author of the Cake Series. She writes contemporary novels focused on love, humor, passion, and family. Her heroines are strong, nurturing, and quirky while her heroes are what dreams are made of - gorgeous, committed, and in need of a little saving. A native Californian, Jill’s novels are set under the glittering lights of the West Coast entertainment industry. They are for the dreamer in all of us.
Jill resides in Ventura County, California. She’s married to the Swedish boy she met as an exchange student her junior year in college and they have three children, a golden retriever, and two ragdoll cats.
I liked the first book Cake but I could not get into the second. Where Cake had humor the second started with a backward telling of a story. And I am not a big fan of stories which start at the end or near to the end and then we see the story develop backward. I also thought that the second story was not needed, because the first one already had a HEA and it was pretty clear where it would go form there. So today I decided to dnf the story instead of leaving the copy on my kindle and feel bad about it.
This was such a gut-wrenching novel to read - - so much anguish, pain and sorrow, but love, oh so much love blanketed the characters in its enduring warmth. Familial support of the characters is the backbone by which all faced their life challenges.
2.. Cake: The Newlyweds
Well, if I thought book one was a highly emotional read, book two of the set (and book four of the series) was an uber emotional read that cut right to the quick. As with the first novel in this series, book four also included so much anguish, pain and lay-you-out sorrow. Again though, the enduring, strength and compassion of unwavering familial love and support, was the abiding backbone that saw the characters through exceedingly troubled times.
I voluntarily received an advance review copy of this two-book box setl from Booksprout and I am leaving an honest and unbiased review. I have no affiliation to this author.
The Cake Series is so enjoyable! The dialogue is second to none. I actually laughed out loud so many times and I don’t usually laugh at too many books. In addition to the plot, the pacing, the dialogue, and the humor, I was so impressed with the uniqueness of each character. I do want to mention that despite the honor this was not a rom-com. There are some very serious situations that occur. I fell in love with them all (almost). I’ll let another reviewer delve more into the details.
I highly recommend this series, in fact, when I finished I downloaded the next book in the series which was also terrific and I’m about to read the third.
It felt like the second book was written by a completely different author from the first. Where was the witty banter? The comedy? The romance? It was dark and depressing and sad, and Jake turned into a real jerk, being borderline verbally abusive to Casey at times. I almost wish I hadn't read the sequel, and their story had ended with the first book, because their story was so beautiful and full of promise then. I laughed out loud at the first book, couldn't put it down. During the second, it just kept getting more and more depressing until In the end I guess they finally got their HEA, but after they both spent most of the book being miserable, it didn't feel like a win.
Wow what an amazing story!!! So full of emotions, love angst and everything in between!! Absolutely loved Jake and Casey and their journey. I have never read a book that made me laugh out loud as much as this one.
