The daughter of a Navy Corpsman and a librarian, Jessica Pierce has traveled the entire span of the United States – from the lush, tropical volcanos of Hawai’i to the eerie romance of the Smoky Mountains. She is an alumna of Middle Tennessee State University where she studied English Literature with a focus in Adolescent Fiction. Currently, she can be found in Arizona with her Air Force husband, murderous devil cat, and three not-so-murderous goldfish. Atlas Fallen is her YA debut.
Stars must have collided somewhere in the universe to make this sensational odyssey take shape. It’s an absolutely delicious blend of science fiction and human emotion that will keep you flipping pages long after bedtime.
Jessica Pierce joins the ranks of sci-fi and fantasy heavyweights like Amie Kaufman and Amy Bartol with Atlas Fallen. I dare you not to fall in love with her enchanting prose, wonderful cast of character, and pulse-pounding plot.
Recommend for: fans of the Lunar Chronicles, stubborn and fierce heroines, and sci-fi.
I received a digital arc of this book from the author, and have decided to review it.
Atlas Fallen tells the story of the daughter of a traitor to the Crown, fallen from her goals and dreams to live out her days in the poverty level of the Atlas space station. She owes a debt to a crime lord, and takes her best chance to escape it through hunting down a terrorist about the station.
So there were some things I totally loved about this book. And there were others that I really wasn't a fan of. Overall, I was delighted with my read.
What I loved:
Sci-fi aspects: They were super easy to follow. I love sci-fi, but sometimes I do have trouble with the jargon and delivery of explanations. In this one though, it was easy to understand and I loved it. I love love love science fiction world building and this book pulled it off well. Character diversity: This book has it all. The tough-as-nails heroine, the crazy fix-it tech dude, the guy with all the savoir faire, a prince, and a bad ass weapons expert. The characters were a part that I enjoyed immensely. Even some of the side characters that only appeared a little bit were interesting, and made me want to know more about them.
What I disliked:
Tropes: There are some tropes in books that I'm just not a fan of that occurred in this novel. Now some are loved by many; they just aren't my thing, such as insta-love, damsel in distress, and girl vs girl fights/enemies. Granted, the insta-love wasn't insta-love, but to me it happened too quickly for it to sit happily with me. I adore development of romance, and especially slow burns, so perhaps I'm biased in this respect. But still, not my cup of tea. But, that's nothing against the book really. Just something I personally dislike so overall, I was quite satisfied with the novel. But at the end of the day, this was a fantastic read. It was superbly fleshed out in temrs of characters and sci-fi elements. Would I read a sequel? Absolutely. I'm utterly intrigued for where the story will lead next, and I love the world that Pierce has set up.
Interesting book, some great characters, but felt like I'd read it before: the daughter of a traitor who is poor, the Prince with secrets and who doesn't much the duties of being prince, the conniving rich woman after the throne, the plot of revolution. An author I will keep my eye on though, because I liked the writing style
I put off writing this review because I really wanted to think and do it justice. I realized if I kept waiting, though, it would never get done, so here I go!
I loved the world-building. I'd never read any science fiction before, so this was definitely a good, easy-to-read introduction. The characters were what I loved most about the book. I would have liked more development of Jasmeen, Sav, and Blitz, but I already love them and can't wait to learn more. The only thing that really bothered me was the instant-love trope, however, I would actually describe it as instant attraction that the characters themselves mistook for love. I know the next book will develop their relationship more, so I'm not too upset about it. I hope they have time to explore their feelings and learn more about each other, as opposed to kissing every chance they get; although I would't complain if there was a little of that. The other thing I noticed, although I'm 100% sure it was intentional, was the lack of attention given to Cerise during the last couple chapters. I am dying to know what happened to her! I also really want to know what makes her such a terrible person, or if she's just the cruelest person in the galaxy for the sake of us having someone to hate. Also, can we talk about the fact that Tesla's family turned out to be pretty terrible parents?!? Just saying. It makes me mad.
All in all, I give Atlas Fallen 4.5 stars, and am anxiously awaiting the next installment. Happy reading!!
This one gets a 4.5 from me! I really enjoyed it. The characters were engaging and had a lot of depth. The plot was fast-paced and kept me guessing the whole way through. My only real criticism is that at times things seemed to fit together a little too nicely, and I felt pulled out of the story at those times. That only happened once or twice, and it wasn't distracting enough to dock a full star. One other thing I struggled with once or twice were the action sequences. I had trouble keeping track of who was doing what where, but there was only 1 major moment that happened (the opera scheme).
So a few of the things I LOVED about this book: 1. The political intrigue! This can be a really hit or miss plot line for me, especially in sci-fi, but Pierce absolutely nailed it in this book. I was interested, I wasn't confused, and I didn't feel the need to re-read those section as I often do in other books. 2. People were smart! Every time I found myself thinking, "gee if I were in this situation, I would obviously do/say this..." the characters did it! I usually feel so frustrated, especially in YA with characters just behaving in an odd way because it suits the plot or some really outlandish character choice. These characters felt more real because of their ability to behave logically, and I loved it. 3. The tech. The robot battles were amazing, and the techie of the group was so cute! Absolutely loved scenes dealing with the future tech. It seemed attainable for this near future world, but different enough that I wasn't distracted by thinking about its plausibility in the world today. Really excited to see what new tech pops up throughout the series. 4. Not a ton of romance, but the romance was great. I was invested in the relationships and I was thrilled when things happened. XD
I could go on, but I hope this is enough to convince you that this book needs to be added to your TBR pile!
This was a fun sci-fi retelling of Cinderella. Since Cinderella is one of my favorite fairy tales, I was pretty excited to read this book. The beginning was pretty slow for me because of the world-building and description. If you read any of my reviews, that shouldn't come as a surprise because I hate getting bogged down by intricate world-building and heavy description. As always, this is completely matter of personal preference. I know lots of people love that kind of stuff and if you do, you'll probably love the details.
Even with the slow beginning, I still enjoyed reading this. The story was lots of fun and the ending was beyond epic. It did a nice job of wrapping up this book while still setting up the next one.
My favorite part of the book is Tesla's interaction with the "fairy godmother." I loved their whole exchange and how it changed things. Plus, her ball gown sounded stunning and now I want one just like it. :)
I really enjoyed Atlas Fallen and would recommend it to a lot of people-- sci fi lovers, YA fans, people who enjoy retellings of fairy tales, and... well, a lot of people. I'm not a massive fan of sci fi to begin with (much more of a fantasy lover) but Atlas Fallen managed to walk the line between "accessible futuristic fairytale" and "intense sci fi geekery" with ease, never leaving me feeling too left out.
Tesla was a joy of a main character. She was bold and enthusiastic and loyal, so whenever events conspired against her or she made a mistake, I really felt like I was alongside her for those moments. Daxton was funny and compelling and I loved the two of them together, and while it was clear from the description that it was a Cinderella retelling (and thus gave me a hint as to who Daxton was), I felt like the reveal of his identity was handled nicely. The plot was face-paced and kept me guessing at what would happen next. Even though I was manage to guess at some of the more major plot points, there were so many hidden storylines all coinciding that I was genuinely pleasantly surprised about some of the reveals (which doesn't happen often).
There was a little bit of instalove, but to be honest, I felt like it worked: these were two people who had never met anyone like the person they became immediately interested in, and to me, that made it a lot more believable.
I will say that the storyline with Kiyo is something that *could* have been fantastic for me, but was only decent. I like the message that was conveyed with his character and his relationship with Tesla and its clear relevance to a lot of contemporary issues with dating or turning friendships into relationships, BUT... I didn't see "enough" of their friendship to truly believe in it to the extent that Tesla seemed to. This was one part where we were definitely "told" rather than shown, and I think even a few memories or a few scenes that showed them as friends the friends they were purported to be rather than dissolving into enemies almost instantly would have gone a long way.
I also have a strange affection for Ceirise. Why? I have no idea-- she was senselessly cruel and absolutely ruthless at times. BUTTTTTT. Her sass after the opera was literally one of the funniest things I've read in the last dozen books, so I'm gonna put her in my "weirdly likable horrible people villains" category.
2.5 stars. This book has potential. Really it does. The world building wasn’t half bad and the characters are pretty cool at times (bit generic, which was basically my problem with the entire book). My friend raved about it and all I saw were great reviews, but then I read the first 90 pages and was bored out of my mind. I know it takes awhile for some books to get started, obviously since you’re introducing us to new characters and a completely different world, but it never really seemed to take off? I skimmed until the end and didn’t see anything worth continuing with, I can’t say I’ll be reading the next one.
It was a bit of a YA trope story that we’re so used to seeing in fantasy, complete with insta love between a scrappy heroine and a sarcastic and handsome prince. Alr Times it felt like it was trying to be Cinder (which wow the Cinderella elements... even though there’s no step sisters are we sure this isn’t a retelling?), but didn’t have the writing or characters to back it up. I really wanted to love this book but I just can’t.
Overall it seems like a pretty meh read? I also know this is the author’s debut novel so maybe her next ones will be better. Overall the concept gets an A+ from me but the execution is more of a D.
I bought this because it had a high rating, but was disappointed. I didn't finish it.
There was nothing terribly original here: a scrappy poor girl trying to save a family member (in this case, her dad's posthumous reputation), and the obligatory stratified society with extreme wealth disparity. The writing was fine, but not standout.
I stopped reading when the prince asked the heroine to the ball. Nothing wrong with romance, but do we really need to drag these fantasy tropes into science fiction? Too many YA sci fi books have royalty, it's ridiculous. Humanity finally has a single unified government, and it's... a monarchy? I don't think so.
4/5 What a wonderful story! I loved it so much. Characters are super nice, there are action, humour, feelings. And all of this takes place in space. Yup guys, in space. I love stories like that. Well, sure, there is no real dinstinctivness: a crew who have to save the world, a love story and all. But still, it is well written and I personally love this kind of story so I won't complain. So yeah, READ IT
First off, let me give a thank you to the author who sent me an early copy of Atlas Fallen!
Atlas Fallen is a story that takes a lot of classic and beloved stories and tropes and presents it with a sci-fi twist. As such, it makes it hard to even describe this book, but there were a few particular popular stories that I could make connections to. Bare with me while I name a few: a gender-bent Aladdin (where there is a prince and the female is the "street rat"), season 5 of Agents of Shield (specifically season 5, because if you've watched it ), Rey on Jakku in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (), Bruce Willis's character's apartment in the Fifth Element (okay, this is kind of a weird comparison, but this is all I could think of when I read about Tesla's home on the space station!), and finally, Cinderella (because really the whole plot of the book seems to be a Cinderella retelling set in space with threats to the crown and robot fights added in). Let me note before hand that I don't believe this is a retelling, but it definitely felt that way to me.
With all those listed and out of the way, in truth this book wasn't the most original book I've ever read. However, I still enjoy the concept, especially as someone who does not read much sci-fi. The writing was great, which was refreshing and made the reading experience easy and enjoyable. I loved the characters in the story. Although they did fall into some cliche incidents (girl with hidden past, past comes out, people get mad), I thought the interactions were realistic and relatable. I really liked Tesla and Daxton and was rooting for them the entire book. I also liked the side characters, though I wished they were a bit more fleshed out (including the mob bosses, they didn't really seem to have a reason to be in the book other than to make things more complicated for Tesla).
Although the book was enjoyable, there were a few things worth mentioning that contributed to a lower rating. First, I'm not really sure what time period we are in. The book mentions that this is the future and there were 100 years of peace on Earth, but doesn't actually give us a year. This is not bad, per say, but when there are references made to "30 decades ago" and "a time before the Great War" I'd just like to have some year of reference. Another thing that irked me was that we were given a decent amount of information about why there was the "Great War" on Earth and how the world is now under one monarchy, but I have no idea why this giant space station called Atlas was made! The entire book takes place on this space station but I never found out why the government made it in the first place. Were they trying to explore space? Using it as an experiment? Made it because they could? There was a vague reference to Earth's overpopulation, but to my knowledge that was before the war and did not have anything to do with the construction of the space station. Furthermore, there are also people living on the moon and no explanation for that. This plot hole really doesn't affect the overall story, but I am a reader who likes to know why things are the way they are and if we're talking about a futuristic Earth, then I need just a bit more backstory for everything to be believable. (I find this is my own personal belief, so other readers might not care so much). Another thing I noticed while reading were a few inconsistencies that threw me off while reading. For example, there is a character named Commander Grey, but a few times he was called "Commander Frey" which confused me at first because I wasn't sure if there were two commanders or if it was a misprint. There were small grammatical issues (such as using "they" instead of "the") and there was a bit of confusion about the temperature on the space station because in one paragraph the main character, Tesla, is leaning on a wall which is cold because the lower decks are cold, and then a few paragraphs later she is breaking out into a sweat because the lower decks were by furnaces. Little inconsistencies such as these made the reading jarring to where I had to stop and go back a few pages to reread the text to make sure I read things correctly.
Other than these issues, I did enjoy the book. It's a super quick read and helped me break out of a reading slump. I will likely continue on to book two and am looking forward to Tesla's adventures. If you like the Lunar Chronicles or any Disney Princess movie (set in space) you will probably enjoy Atlas Fallen!
I was fortunate enough to get my hands on an e-ARC of this book and I'm glad I did. I've been wanting to read this book since it was first introduced to me a few months back as I have an ever-growing love for sci-fi, particularly of the YA persuasion, and this book hit all the right notes. If you're a fan of series like The Lunar Chronicles or the Starbound Trilogy, you'll enjoy this book.
Atlas Fallen is a gritty sci-fi set on a space station where the upper class live in luxury on the uppermost levels and the lower classes, Tesla included, scrape by in the Gulch. The world-building was probably one of my favorite parts of the novel. I could easily imagine the stacks of apartments in the Gulch or the markets in the mid-levels. I could feel the heat and humidity of the ag labs and picture the opulence of the ballroom. I enjoyed the balance between the darker and mostly-lighter sides of the world.
The characters themselves are well thought out. Tesla is a kick-ass and flawed heroine (my favorite kind) who shows a human scope of character and emotion that sometimes doesn't always come across in fiction. She goes from despair to hope and everything in between as her character arc progresses throughout the book. Daxton is every thing a prince should be even though he doesn't want it. Willing to do anything to protect his people, unshakable in his faith in his friends, and generally a decent guy despite having some dreadful things thrown at him. Don't get me wrong he has his flaws too, which makes me like him even more.
As for the secondary characters, Daxton's friends Sav, Blitz, and Jasmeen are just as developed and complex as the primary characters and I fell in love with all of them. Particularly Sav, being a fellow medic. I needed more Theopoenne fairy godmother in this. The other characters though felt a little two dimensional. I would have liked some more expansion on Kyratine and Cerise and some of the the Gulch characters as to what drives them or what their purpose exactly was. Some of them felt as if they were just there to fill a role and then disappeared.
The story is fast-paced and engaging. The mystery is a whodunit that leaves you guessing up until the big reveal at the end, which I did not see coming. Plot Twist much? Good job Ms. Pierce as usually I can guess what's coming long before it happens. As with some of the characters I would have liked a little more expansion on certain elements like the original theory and how it feels like it was kind of left hanging with the ending. Perhaps that will get addressed in book 2. I wanted to know a bit more about the Restoration and see it worked more into the story as their role felt a little disjointed. I suspect we'll be seeing more of them book 2.
The book is written in 3rd person, which I loved. It's so rare to find YA books written in 3rd person for some reason. I don't mind 1st person, but it's not my favorite. I like to see what all the characters are thinking. The two main POVs are Tesla and Daxton, but every now and then it felt a little 3rd person omniscient, and the thoughts of other characters seemed to pop through from time to time. At least that's what it seemed like to me and I enjoyed seeing everyone's actions and thoughts. There are a few scene changes and POV changes that feel a little disjointed to me, but other than that the writing is lovely and well-done. This is my first time ever reading an e-book so maybe it had something to do with formatting as there were also ridiculous spacing between words and sentences occasionally.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait for the second book. With just a little bit more development this book would have definitely been a five-star read for me without a doubt.
This must be the year for sci-fi, fantasy, and romance to bunk up together and become the best roommates the book world has seen to date. Pierce did her homework before jumping into this action-packed tale full of political maneuverings, high-tech gadgetry, and a healthy dose of Gryffindor bravery.
Tesla Petrov. Let's just take a beat right here. Her name is ridiculously perfect. All the names in this story pulled me in even further as I met each character. Sometimes I'll read a story and the names feel so wrong to the timeline and setting that it pulls me out and it's hard to get back into the thick of it. That was not the case here at all. Tesla has gone through a serious amount of ish, (yes, I said ISH, just roll with it) and is used to roughing it not only on her own, but keeping a watchful eye on those around her and everything that's happening in the station. She knows things. She's quietly biding her time with a personal mission to clear her father's name of a wrongful death sentence. She is the epitome of fierce and brave while remaining humble.
Did I mention this story is set on a space station? Well it is, and Pierce establishes every nook and cranny in my mind perfectly from the very bottom trash hole (where Tesla resides), to the tip-top elaborately ornate where the wealthy live and mingle. All of it was relatively easy for me to keep track of which is great, because I wanted to focus on the tech. And boy was I delivered a delicious amount of that on a silver platter. I LOVE descriptions and we can gorge our brains on sci-fi weaponry, advanced robotics, and how all of that applied to their everyday living situations, including the medical field. I was engrossed in the robot battle and seriously could have had another whole chapter full of that, but I'm weird and get super psyched about fight-details.
One thing I really enjoyed about this whole story is that yes, there is a huge arc that we're gobbling up, but each character sort of has their own very well thought out arc and we get to see all of that unfolding together at the same time. Stories can sometimes drag on when the author attacks just one thing at a time instead of juggling 7 different arcs under the main umbrella of the story while still somehow managing to make it all work in the end. Pleasantly surprised I was. (#yoda #dealwithit)
I also love a good political intrigue. I want to be guessing. I want to be constantly at attention wondering who, what, when, why, and where. I like puzzles and I really enjoy piecing things together. I wasn't smacked in the face with a shovel of a plot twist in this story, but that didn't end of mattering. I still felt each betrayal and it only garnered more interest.
I would also say that romance too a backseat to everything else that was going on, and that was refreshing. I kinda tired of romance being number 1 and everything else was just a flitting thought to fill the rest of the story. I'm a slow-burn type of girl and I think over the next couple of books, we'll truly get to see this love-flower blossom. OH! And people die in this story! YES! I'm just so over books where no one dies. That's not realistic at all.
I didn't really explain the story to you, but I gave you all of the points that meant something to me. Why read reviews if not for opinions. Go get the story and fill in the blanks! You'll thank me later!
You can trust me when I say I know what good science fiction books look like. Atlas Fallen was not one of them: it shoots to the top of any list and fits comfortably in what I would consider GREAT science fiction. Beyond amazing: it's destined to become a classic.
A hundred years after the nations of the world were united under one crown, that crown is in jeopardy. A mysterious plot threatens to destroy the monarchy, and it all seems to be going down on the ATLAS, a space station in orbit around Earth, strictly divided between the elite and the working class. Tesla, once an up-and-coming flight cadet before she was stripped of her rank, is trying to prove her father's innocence from treason, an act which has cost him in life. When she meets Daxon, he offers her a way off the station, at a cost - helping him save the ATLAS from whatever plot is about to go down.
Tesla is one of the best YA heroines I've ever read. And I'm not even sure why exactly! Maybe it was how much I could relate to her, as she was a character with depth and complexity that a reader can really get to know. Maybe it was her brilliance, as she's a savvy engineer with a good head on her shoulders. Maybe it was her courage and her drive, the kind of strength that drives her to design and fight in robot matches, or, say, sign up for a terrifying mission which would throw her life out the airlock. There was something about Tesla that just seemed so real that I'm still dying to know more about her.
Daxon is equally fascinating. Though we spend less time in his POV, it's hard to miss the complexity of his own life. I loved how the author took the trope surrounding his character (trying to avoid spoilers here) and flipped it on its head. His friends, the supporting cast of the book, are fascinating and I really can't wait to learn more about them in the future books. That, and explore the growing relationship between Tesla and Daxon... Daxla? Texon? Do we have a ship name yet?
None of the plot felt predictable: when you saw it go one way, it would quickly throw you a curveball. I loved the dichotomy of Tesla's life, able to infiltrate a gala and fight in robot death matches one after the other. The ending was exciting and left me breathless for more. I think we have a new hit on our hands!
All in all, it is an out of this world debut. Skillfully crafted, with brilliant heroes and thrilling adventure, Atlas Fallen is un-putdownable. A masterpiece of Young Adult Space fiction!
Let me start by saying I hate e-books. It feels so impersonal to me when I read a book on a device. I can’t feel the physical weight of the book, feel the pages flip through my fingers, or smell that “new book” smell that somehow transports me to the world in which I’m reading. That being said I had no issues flying through this amazing E-ARC of Atlas Fallen by Jessica Pierce. This book is by far one of the best books I have read in 2018 so far. The characters, setting, and plot are beautifully spun together in the author’s detailed voice, making you literally feel as if you’re on The Atlas. This book is about secretes, surviving, revolution, economical class and trying to do what is right…. On top of all that, It’s set in SPACE!!!!!! And let me say the world building is amazing. I am always inspired by the way authors are able to make living in space so obtainable. While reading this book, I truly felt as if I were in the Gulch, and sneaking into the upper levels past the deimark…… This book has a writing style that will pull you in and not let you go. I devoured this book in less than and 8 hour period….. The writing flows very well, and the world is so amazing that you will NOT want to leave it. From the beginning I was pulled in. I was learning flaws as well as amazing skills that Tesla possess. The way Jessica Pierce can make you really feel the emotional ups and downs of the characters is an amazing feat. I laughed, I yelled, I cussed (I did, some things really teed me off- like that effing deimark!!) Anyway, I cried and I cheered. (All out loud, by the way, and receiving disturbing looks from family and co-workers…… just saying) This book took me on a space adventure I will take several more times. I loved this book!!!! I’m telling you now, if you love space, secretes, revolutions, class bending, royalty, and ass kicking, you will love this book!!!!! Oh did I mention robot fighting???? HAHAHAHAH!!!! I know you will fall in love with Tesla, Daxton, and the rest of the team! So what are you waiting for?? Get out there and pre-order this book! NOW!! Below you will find some of my actual reactions (in word form of course) while I was reading this Amazing book!!! *******warning********potential spoilers ahead************
“I want to wear a bot suite and fight!!! Like UFC with bots!!! HAHAHA!!!” “Oh you mother-f-er Kiyo……… of course she said mean things….. You are doing mean things!” “I despise arranged marriages…. “ “Oh, This Bitch!! No way is this going to work out. She’s pretty much a sociopath and possibly a full-fledged psychopath!” “Oh you’re wrong Daxton- But I’ll let you run with it.” “WOW!! Not how you show someone you care about them!” “ I DO NOT LIKE THIS Beotch!! Scheming lil tramp!!! “OOOOOH….. I did not see that coming…..I thought, then I was like, no……but it’s TRUE!!” Final thoughts…..
Revenge or Justice- Traitor or Vigilante- Sometimes the lines get blurry……
I got a copy of the Atlas Fallen ebook in my FairyLoot's November box, and this made me really happy! ^^ The book turned out to be a great read, actually. It is an awesome way for YA fans who are not really fond of sci-fi to explore the combined genre.
The story was fast-paced, action-packed, and intriguing with all of its political machinations, threats, and terrorism. I really like Daxton and Tesla's characters, they felt real, flawed, close to my heart. The romance was too quick for my taste, as I prefer the slow-burn, but it was heart-warming nonetheless.
The rest of the characters were also quite interesting. We could've seen more of them before they exited the scene, but I won't hold grudges. All in all, Atlas Fallen was a very pleasant read, with enough twists, enough mystique, and tension. I will definitely be returning to the series, and actually can't wait to read the next part. ^^
Of course, it wasn't without flaws, that's why my rating is so shaky - it had its predictable moments, and like I said - the quick romance rubbed me the wrong way. But the overall journey was totally worth it!
Amazing, she’s written characters so well and created an amazing futuristic political world that I’m happy to be thrust into. First off the Atlas, for someone like me who grew up watching Zenon (and all the sequels) and wanted to live on a space station even just for a minute, this book was perfect. It was equal parts thrilling, detailed and normalized, I knew the dynamics of the Atlas and could easily picture each area in my mind. Now Tesla, the great line about the history of her name is perfect. Also a badass girl who had her life rebuilt with just the right amount of action, and a smidge of love and even love triangle; well I’m on board. This book is sooo good and I can’t wait to read more from Ms. Pierce. Her military background shines through in keeping the medical jargon minimal but still keeping it interesting, and you could tell she took quite a bit of influence from her husband’s Air Force background. My only objection was the ending to book one, it set up book two well but in spots it seemed totally rushed to tie up. The overall book kept me enthralled enough to look past that though. Can’t wait to read more.
Five stars. This book has everything. I am extremely picky with sci-fi fantasy and I have to admit I loved everything about this book. I instantly fell for Daxton and Tesla. Telsa is a take charge type of girl and just plain awesome... I mean come on competing in illegal robot fights for a crime lord to survive? Like I said awesome. Oh and Daxton falls into my favorite troupe! The heir to the throne who wants more out of life than to be royalty and can fall for a "cinderella" type of girl. Pierce does a good job running with this trope and owning it. Daxton is smart, kind and good hearted.
Another thing I enjoyed was that this story was full of action, intrigue, political symbolism and romance. Pierce has easily created a complex world that can easily be expanded into other stories. I can't wait to read the rest of the Cyber Crown series. And I am extremely excited to already dive back into this world.
I was gifted an advanced copy of this book and would like to review.
Atlas Fallen is basically my new favourite sci-fi series having finished the Lunar Chronicles and Illuminae. This book has everything I could want, action, romance, a heroine that kicks butt, friendships and a super epic scheme that has you guessing who's behind it at every turn. The politics of this universe are amazing as well! This book put me into the story so deeply that I could picture the difference in scenery and feel the change within the characters as they developed. The romance in this book was a little quick but honestly, I loved it! Sometimes you need that instant attraction in a book and it just made me happy to read! It may not be everyone's idea of a good romance but I needed it and I AM DYING TO READ THE SEQUEL!! So if you're looking for a new sci-fi romance, this is the book for you! (I will literally force this book on everyone from now on.)
Oh my goodness!!! This was the most amazing book EVER! So I recieved an arc from the author and volunteered to give an honest review.
So let me start out by saying that I am not usually a fan of science fiction in general. That is my fiancés forte. That being said, I did not have super high expectations but boy was I blown away!
Tesla is the main character who ends up being indebted to a nasty group of people in a space ship. Life is just complete crap for her, but THEN lovely daxton meanders into the picture and my oh my do things heat up....and blow up lol.
This reminds me of an Aladdin gender bend retelling, but in space..... with a crap load of awesome technology. IT WAS SO FREAKING GOOD OMG YOU GUYS NEED TO READ IT!
I love YA and it's one of my favorite genres. This is another book I found through Fae Crate and it immediately interested me. The book was really good overall and there wasn't any moments where I was sitting there thinking why would they do that? All the characters acted like REAL people and their decisions totally made sense. I'm more into Fantasy than Sci-fi, but this book was amazing!! I loved Tesla's personality and she's extremely likable. I feel like that's super important for main characters in books and I find myself enjoying books more when I can relate to them. Also, Daxton was charming and hilarious. The two of them together to me was perfection. I would ABSOLUTELY love to read the sequel. This is a unique, refreshing story that I believe YA lovers would enjoy :)
My book concludes after a few chapters with 'end of sample' so I can't give a full review. I didn't much take to the writing style, which is hard-nosed and bossy, following a young woman called Tesla who got indebted to some gangsters in an off-world environment. They are now salivating at the prospect of auctioning her off for adult purposes if she can't keep up payments. But she has no intention of letting that happen, and indeed I didn't see any indication that it would.
The unified government of the story is for some reason a monarchy, hard to figure, but maybe this was deemed better than politicking and rapid policy changes. If you liked Luna - New Moon this would be a more simplified version. This is an unbiased review.
I would describe this book as a crossover between star wars and passengers. Books taking place in space never seem to fail to amaze us. Most people have not gone into space. One thing we like to imagine is life in space. Maybe we picture it in beauty, peace, or awesomeness. But whatever way, Jessica took it to the next level. She made a pace we had never dreamed us. And showed us the thorny side of the rose. Maybe life is better on earth. With her writing, which was impecable, she gave us some insight to our dystopian universe. Her characters, we connected with, were relatable in every way. Despite being quite different from us, their human side connected with us. And we hoped for them to win and overcome the problem. I cannot wait to see what she comes up with in the second book. Which I believe will only surpass the first. This seems like a dystopian trilogy if I've ever heard one. Only now with a little space spin to it.
