The books are consistently uncomfortable, and the characters are unrelatable. Motivations of characters make absolutely no sense, very frequently. The stories are simplistic, and follow the usual route of “foolhardy youngster doesn’t know how to ask for help.”
The world building might have had potential, but was fleshed out to the absolute minimum. “Lives” are referenced multiple times but never explained; government structure makes little sense. People in positions of power are almost exclusively portrayed negatively.
Unhealthy relationships and abusers are forgiven or have their actions “justified” away by cultural differences. Just a note: The word “Consent” is more or less never used in the books, though it applies to many situations throughout (and the vocab choice really would have simplified things).
And the ending... the ending is bad.
Overall: it was readable enough for me to finish, but only barely
I enjoyed this series. Dropped into a different world and discovering how they lived and did things was interesting. I liked the story line, and the characters were developed nicely. It could use a really good edit, and the story wasn’t as tight as it could have been. Overall, I very much enjoyed reading this.
*****Dragon Mage Academy Series by Cordella Castel: imaginative and entertaining series
****Princess of Dragons #1: This story was fun and adventurous with a side of danger and secrets. Good character development and a nice pace kept me reading.
****Poacher of Dragons #2: There’s another crisis in this book that Alba, with the help of her many friends, has to solve.
*****Plague of Dragons #3: The pace of this story was faster, with an urgency and a re-alignment of loyalties. More disclosure of Alba’s secret, and a rescue with consequences.
*****Protector of Dragons #4: A loyalty elixer, misplaced loyalty, magical mayhem, and an unwanted betrothal. Very imaginative with a good pace and lots of action.
*****Prisoner of Dragons #5: In this book, old threats are countered, and new threats evolve. New alliances are forged towards a common goal.
*****Pariah of Dragons #6: Multiple threats evolve again, with a powerful crook captured, and a powerful wild dragon joining the fight to defeat the Spriggans. A bargain, and a promise both involving Alba.
*****Patron of Dragons #7: Alba manages to draw on great power, and with the help of her friends, win epic battles. Along the way, she earns respect and gets her HEA. I enjoyed this series tremendously, but the ending felt a little bit rushed.
A fun, easy to read YA Fantasy about dragons, witches, mages, ogres, trolls, giants, and more. There is humor, drama, some teenage angst, temper tantrums, great action, battles, and more.
A surprising favorite for me. I was expecting it to be cute and fun, but what I didn’t expect was to completely fall in love with all of the characters. The characters are so well developed and you feel like you really know them. Between Stafford and Eveolyn, Niger, Fyrian, and the Troll there is just so much heartwarming and heart-pumping content. Eyepatch and flying cat - all the feels! The friendships are precious and the bond between Fyrian and Alba is so special.
I love that the other wasn’t afraid to write about going through some hard lessons in order for the characters to learn, grow, and shape who they are, learning that there are consequences to their actions. I feel the last battle went a bit quick, but it was done well and was “realistic”. It had my heart beating and had me glued to the page and couldn’t put it down.
I really enjoyed this series and am considering reading more from this author. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is for the tedious parts I literally had to skip over. I also found myself taking a week break in the last few chapters. Binge reading may have been the culprit but it is what I ended u doing. If you binge read the series, it could happen to you too. I do recommend the series.
I really enjoyed this series, but I do have one complaint. It ended way too early. The pace of the series was great, characters are enthralling, great storyline, up until the last book. The ending was rushed and there was no epilogue, it just was over. I feel like there could have easily been one or two more books, especially as fast paced as it is. I am looking forward to the next series in this world, and I do highly recommend checking this series out!
Honestly enjoyed the first book but somewhere along the way the writing loses structure, characters flip flop on decisions from one sentence to the next and lose who they are. They no longer perpetuate and drive the story, the story is happening without them. There was a part where the dragon she's paired with is telling the lead not to do something and the next sentence, without any explanation or thought, the dragon says to do it and for me that was so jarring I stopped reading any further.
I found this set very confusing because of the way it was written. The description of the characters was confusing and vague. The description at the start of this set of books of Princess Alba is described a quarter Ogre, a quarter faerie and a half human, how can you visualise a person like that. Then you get descriptions of other cadets being half Ogres, Masters being Dragon shifters, one master looking like a 12year old!! The Cadets in the academy are always eating huge amounts of food since they are an Ogre mix of full Ogres, and because of their description I cannot picture them, so I think of them as human teenagers with a huge appetite. So, you have Ogre mix, you have witches and mages and Dragons. Later on in the set you get a Troll, he is called " Master Jesper ". Now. What annoys me Master Jesper is always polite, truthful, and honest, yet he is not called a " he ", they call him an " it " all the cadets and masters are called a " he ". Call me old fashioned, but, if he is Master, then he is a Male, a " he ", not an it, insulting and degrading, I had to re read the sentence and replace it for he. The underlying plot throughout the set was good, with a good ending, but it was a slog to get through story, as I said....confusing.
This series is very slow paced. Every character execept the Main character behaves like an absolute moron until the End of Book 3, where the Maincharacter also became an idiot, which made stop reading this series.
Additionally the sexism in thia book is very strong. not only are there many professions that are limited for no good reason to specific genders, but also the interaction between the characters is often sexist.
If that wasn't enough queue racism. Every race despises at least on other race for no good reason. Even t!he Maincharacter has racism issues with several goodwilling races.
So my recommendation: Only read this if you are a big fan of the american lifestyle in the first half of 2020.
(Not joking here, the hatred against life in this series [redacted by Moderator])
I have to say that eventually the interactions between the heroine and the main male character got so toxic that I had to stop at book 5. The heroine is a classic example of an enabler who keeps forgiving and making excuses for the unexcusable. At first, I put up with it because I thought it was going to be one of those hate to love situations, but it turned into abuse by book 4 and I just couldn't take it anymore. I gave it three stars because the first couple of books were OK. I didn't look at the end of the last novel, but if Alba ends up with the King, I will lose all respect for Ms Castel's authorial choices.
Why must women be portrayed in such a weak light. Alba must have a very weak stomach. It,a either clenching or plummeting, nausea every other line, legs always trembling. My grandmother had more gumption. This unfortunately is the profile for women in every story I've read so far with women as the protagonist. As a strong woman I find this unacceptable. I had to skip through most of the stories in order to finish the books. Let's write about women who can get the job done without looking like air heads.
I usually really like this sort of book. This one just wasn't good it has plot holes or editing issues from book to book continuity. Other than the main heroine the characters are very undeveloped and very inconsistent emotionally. The plot is interesting but I kept reading hoping the next book would develop the other characters more or make things feel better but it never did. I could have let some of the issues go and been entertained and done 3 stars but it was just too many little issues.
I would recommend the author do a complete overhaul of this series. This is an idiots series. The youngs adults IN the series are appropriately stupid , the adults, many of whom are supposed to be 100+ are just as stupid if not more so. It feels like a ten year old wrote the books and had someone proofread it with no concept of real politics or anything really. Dont read.
I enjoyed the story but it needs a good proofreading to fix the problems I saw.
The whole series felt like someone wrote a single book and then broke it up in peices to try and make extra books. Each book ends abruptly and the next begins with the sentence that would have followed the end of the last book.
Riddled with typographical and grammatical errors and nonstop action to the point of ridicule this is the worst kind of fantasy that appears for free on Amazon prime....sorry but this was a terrible read as each “book” is a few chapters of which editing would distill to a few pages
Overall this was a fast paced series that I enjoyed reading. However, this is one of those stories where all adults are incompetent and a teenager saves the world.
I absolutely loved this series!! I loved each book, individually and yet always craved more; even now at its end. So, if you’re looking for nonstop adventures, action, battles and characters of alll sorts: ogres, witches, trolls, fairies, dragons, humans & many more then get the “Dragon Mage Academy” box set. You won’t be able to put it down. ‼️To the author, I only have one criticism and that’s to the very last book. There are a multitude of errors. If possible, I would suggest the author get one trusted beta reader, one who’s good at spotting the most simplistic and trickiest, imbedded errors & correcting them. Actually, two would be better than one; what one doesn’t find, hopefully the other will. I’m guessing the author hurried through this last book to make deadline. But I can tell you as a reader that dislikes dumb errors, I think it’s a real shame to end the series with faulty writing. Idk anything about publishing but I think it’s worth the fix. 😉
I felt that the whole book overall I had a very rushed tone. I realize that these are books of a lighter level for younger readers. At least that's how they felt to me. But the entire series takes place over only a few weeks. And it just felt too condensed, too rushed. I think it could have been expanded just a little with some more character development. I especially felt that King Magnar and some of the other classmates could have been a little more detailed. Some of the characters came across as quite stereotypical. I think the most irritating thing was the princess herself was full of herself and way too impulsive. However, overall it was a fun series to read. A lot of the little adventures were Entertaining. And even though I found myself getting irritated by some of the things I mentioned above, I enjoyed the series enough to put the prequels on my book list. So I guess that speaks for itself, right?
A Really Good Story That Could Have Been Edited Better
I read this complete series over the course of a week and I really enjoyed it. My only complaint is that there are so many grammatical errors that kept taking me out of the story. The word chaperon was consistently used instead of the word apron, for example. I kept wondering why the head chef was wearing a chaperon. There were mentors occasions where words were missing or used incorrectly. A couple of times over the course of seven books I was confused by illogical sentence or paragraph construction. It was tough to read sometimes, but otherwise, the story line and conceptual ideas behind how magic works in this world are really fascinating and I thought it was worth reading past all the mistakes. It was a very enjoyable story to read from book one to book seven. If the author is reading this, well done. Try hiring an editor next time if you're looking to improve:-)
I like the fact that the heroine if the story is not perfect. She is young, inexperienced, opinionated and occasionally annoying. She is a royal brat. She is not, however a spoiled brat. She is determined to make her own way. She accepts the fact that people are not perfect. She learns fast and refuses to ignore bad behavior, even her own. All in all she is an awesome character. The stories are well done and each arc builds on the previous one, allowing for the next story. A very well done heroic journey, only for girls, with the added sideline of addressing things that boys do not normally face. Very well done there! And the world itself is rich with layered history, mythology and culture of its own. I really wish this had been around when my daughter was a child.
Author Cordelia Castel has got me hooked on this series right from the beginning as her characters come alive all of a sudden. First off, we meet an angry, fearful Princess Alba stomping into the castle where her step-mother is queen of the seven realms. Alba has just flunked out of witch school, seemingly completely unable to conjure anything. Her unusual family situation is fleshed out, and we suddenly understand why Alba writes to the headmaster of the Dragon Mage Academy, a school for all boys, and asks for admission under a boy's name. She manages to get there, and walks right in to a recently-committed murder. Then she finds herself bonded to a beautiful green dragon who has been accused of said murder. If the dragon is executed for a murder she insists she never committed, then Princess Alba dies too. Sound convoluted enough for you? Get involved. You'll have a great time!
I enjoyed this series a lot. I agree that it felt rushed though because there were a lot of great ideas that could have been fleshed out more, especially since there were multiple books. Some ideas seemed straight out of Harry Potter such as the game that was a lot like Quidditch. Also, in real life you do not always fall in love in just a week or two. Bonds between a dragon and a rider take time also. If the writer had said they had been at the school for multiple years I would have believed the relationships better. I actually really liked the iridescent dragon and wanted to learn more about all the dragons and their abilities which is why I picked up the book in the first place. I am considering reading more by this author because I like her world-building. A book like this would probably be found in the young adult section of Barnes and Noble.
I wanted to like this. I did trudge through as there were threads of plot I wanted to see to the end. But I had the series on Kindle with text-to-speech on speed level 3. It almost sounded like the chipmunks were reading it, but I could follow the storyline and stay with it. I had pushed it aside, but I ran out of stuff to read for a moment, and there it was, so I tried again.
The characters were unrelatable. And I don't know about you, but as much as I loved seeing books of girls defeating the male-dominated societies by pretending to be boys, I prefer stories of females making it in equalitarian societies. All things being equal, I love the dragons in this story. They are intelligent and bond with humans to get things done.
Go read the reviews. They are quite mixed. You may love this book. You may hate it. At least you'll have a decent read for a few nights.
Exciting Epic Fantasy with Dragons, Witches and Battles
Extremely entertaining box set with well written characters in an intriguing world. Non-stop action makes this a page turner long past your bedtime. So many incredible things happen with the pages of this box set. Murder, betrayal, strong bonds, friendships, courage, bravery, horrific events, triumph, to name a few. Can one princess masquerading as a boy make it successfully through Dragon Mage Academy? With the help of loyal friends she just might! Many friends with strong leadership qualities help her be successful in adventures, but will they be able to protect the Dragon sanctuary and all those who reside there from the evil dark magic high fairies and The Forgotten King, the strongest of them all?
I luv dragons and stories about them! These 7 books are all about a girl escaping an arranged marriage to a warlord who is old enough to be her father. To do so she must pretend to be a boy. The witch who helps her with her disguise makes her look like her cousins, the princes in another kingdom. She uses the disguise to enter the safest place she knows , the Dragon Mage Academy. Her father will never look for her there! It just gets more dangerous from there! Don't miss this box set and you can read it for free on Kindle Unlimited!! Highly recommended.
I’m thankful that I was able to get the full 7 books for I hate reading one book then waiting for the next as they come out! This book is excellent for its world building. The characters are well fleshed out. There are some minor errors but it’s good YA and young at heart fantasy. The young heroine, Princess Alba, is looked down on for being illegitimate. She tries out for the witches Magical Militia but her magic doesn’t suit. Nobody seems to understand that, they just see her failure. This young woman is determined to prove herself so she disguises herself as a young man and becomes a cadet in the Dragon’s forces. A classic good fighting evil story.
Totally enjoyed the escapism of this fantasy. Nothing offensive, portrays good moral values, no questionable relationships or foul language. If you can handle reading through so many pages for one story and can overlook some shortcomings, this story portrays young people (and adults) overcoming difficulties and prejudices together. While the writing is not great in the Kindle version (typos, disjointed sentences, character development is lacking in many cases), it doesn't matter much. The story moves along quickly through the seven books. Which I now find funny that I'm saying this since it encompasses 2500 pages!
From the first chapter I was hooked, I loved the way she began the next book knowing you had read the last one it made it seem like it was one huge book and dispelled the need to keep reminding you what had already happened. The relationship between Alba and her Fyria was natural and felt right from the start. There were a few tense moments of frantically turning pages to get to where I could take another breath but not so many as to make it implausible. All in all a brilliant read well recommended.
